High Performance Mindset | Learn from World-Class Leaders, Consultants, Athletes & Coaches about Mindset - 478: How to Lead Yourself

Episode Date: January 13, 2022

Leading yourself can be very difficult because our brain is hardwired to see what is missing. Instead, you can lead yourself to your own personal vision by remembering these three principles: 1) What ...you think about yourself, you become, 2) Thoughts only have power if you believe them, and 3) You can act independent of how you feel. Chance thinking doesn’t lead to success – instead, make time each day to master your thoughts and lead yourself.  This Week’s Power Phrase:  “I level up my thinking to level up my life!”    Quote of the Week: ““Work harder on yourself than you do your job.”—Jim Rohn, American businessman and self-made millionaire

Starting point is 00:00:33 Cinder, start us off with a quote. I like this quote by Jim Rohn. He said, work harder on yourself than you do your job. Work harder on yourself than you do your job. What inspired that specific topic today? Well, I've been thinking a lot about how we lead ourselves, but we also lead other people. And even if you're not in a leadership role, you lead your family or you lead the people around you. And sometimes the hardest person is actually to lead ourselves because our brain's hard wiring is actually more to see what's wrong. And it's sometimes really difficult to have command over ourselves, like our emotions and our attention. And so sometimes it can feel easier to lead other
Starting point is 00:01:10 people, like to help them reach their deadlines and be on time and follow through their commitments. And it can feel like harder to lead ourselves, which really means to me, you know, practicing good self-care or managing the negativity that we each have in our own minds. Well, let's talk about our thoughts and why are those thoughts so important when we want to lead ourselves? Well, our brain is really hardwired to see what's missing and to look at a negative situation and a negative perspective and situation. So when we lead ourselves first, that really means that we're activating kind of our own self-command muscle and being intentional with that. And at the heart of it is really being aware of what we're thinking about.
Starting point is 00:01:50 And our mind is really our engine. It powers who we become, what our future is. It powers our emotions and our actions. And today we're going to talk about three ways or three principles to lead ourselves. So as we think about leading oneself, what's the first principle that you want to share with us? The first principle is what we think about ourselves we become. And this is a really powerful principle because whatever we attach I am to becomes more of our identity and who we are. And so I am really shapes who we become and our reality.
Starting point is 00:02:23 So, for example, if I believe I'm a procrastinator, I'm going to become more of that. So we really have to train our mind to level up our thinking about ourselves and remember who we actually are, not instead of like, because our brain can tell us a lot of lies. So we really have to look inside and remind ourselves who we are. So the question I'm just going to encourage people to think about is, what do you need to believe more about yourself to really step into your best and to lead yourself the best that you can? This is like a self-fulfilling prophecy. If you say it, it's going to happen kind of, right? Absolutely. Yes. Especially that I am part. I love it. What is another principle that we can use to lead ourselves?
Starting point is 00:03:01 Well, another principle is that thoughts only have power if you believe them. And I like this concept from Daniel Amen, and he talks about automatic negative thoughts or ants. And, you know, my negative thoughts, just like everyone else's are automatic. I don't always choose them, but I can decide how I'm going to respond to them. And a lot of our thoughts are lies. We don't need to believe them. And so I think the key really is to decide if you want to believe those thoughts or not. What's the third principle that we can use to lead ourselves? The third principle is that you can act independent of how you feel. And what that means is just because you feel frustrated or angry doesn't mean that you
Starting point is 00:03:40 need to act that way, like frustrated or angry. And so the key is just to, when we're thinking about leading ourselves and being the best that we can is when we're feeling frustrated or angry or disempowering emotions like that is just to see through a lens of compassion and that just asking ourselves, what led me to feel this way?
Starting point is 00:04:01 And just because I'm feeling this way doesn't mean I need to act this way. So just kind of thinking about what triggers your negativity and frustration to help you lead yourself even more effectively. Final point for us today? Sure. I would say that each day we can make time to be really intentional with leading ourselves. And that really means noticing the thoughts and beliefs that hold you back and choosing really powerful thoughts that continue to believe, to build these powerful beliefs about yourself and your goals. Cinder, how do you summarize today for us then? So leading yourself can be really difficult because of our brain is hardwired to see what's
Starting point is 00:04:36 wrong. So we want to remember what we think about ourselves we become and thoughts only have power if we believe them and we can act independent of how we feel. So we want to just remember that chance thinking doesn't lead to success. Instead, we want to really take the time to master our thoughts and ourselves. So I'm assuming that we have a pretty significant power phrase coming up here. Yes, I like this one. I level up my thinking to level up my life, and that's what you can remember this week. That's a good one.
