Episode Date: June 29, 2022

High performers know who they are. They grow in their awareness of themselves and one way to do that is to identify your core values in a conscious way. Meaning, you decide what values, or core belief...s, you want guiding you in this phase of life. Then, you can use these values to guide your behavior and actions.  Power Phrase this Week: “I know myself and use my values to guide my actions each day.”  Quote of the Week: Elvis Presley said, “Values are like fingerprints. Nobody’s are the same, but you leave them all over everything you do.”

Starting point is 00:00:00 We check in with Cindra Kampoff this morning and today we talk about how to know who you really are. Cindra, why don't you start us off with a quote? I love this quote by Elvis Presley. He said, values are like fingerprints. Nobodies are the same, but you leave them all over everything you do. I like that one, especially with the Elvis movie out. What are we talking about today? Well, today we're talking about just growing in our own awareness of ourselves. And one way we can do that is by identifying our values. And our values make up really the way of our being and what we believe. They're not necessarily goals, but instead they
Starting point is 00:00:35 guide you into your actions. And the values allow us to get closer to just showing up the way that we each want to live. It's one of my practices or part of my practices in Beyond Grit. And why is it important that we understand our values? Well, living your values is about letting them really guide your intentions and your actions. And the thing is that only you can choose your values. They don't shift by situations. But really, we want one set of values to guide us. And we want to consciously choose these values. They don't shift by situations, but really we want one set of values to guide us. And we want to consciously choose these values. And when we consciously choose them, they can help us inform our decisions, sometimes prevent burnout and assist us just in making good
Starting point is 00:01:17 decisions that we really want to make. And when we work from really our core values, we're more likely to experience us consistently being at our best and peak performance in general, because we're making decisions based on how we want to live. So how do we go about understanding our values? Well, the first thing you'd want to do is ask yourself, you know, what is important to you in this stage of your life right now? And our values are like a compass. They provide direction, and they can keep us moving towards that direction. And they can also inform our actions. So especially as leaders, you know, we lead ourselves, but we lead other people.
Starting point is 00:01:53 We want to really practice our values. And so we want to consciously choose them. And one way to do that is to ask ourselves, you know, what is important to you at this stage of your life right now? And so how do we actually identify what our values are? Well, it takes a lot of reflection. And I think you're worth it, though, to really spend some time thinking about it. And I have a list of values that you can get over at beyondgrit.com slash bonus. So my book is called Beyond Grit, so beyondgrit.com slash bonus. And my book is called Beyond Grit, so beyondgrit.com slash bonus. And there's this list of values. And what I would encourage people to do is choose, you know, of this list, maybe 10 or 15 values. And you can add more to this list. And then you'll
Starting point is 00:02:39 from that 10 or 15, you'll pick out three that are most important to you in this space of your life right now. And then you'll want to define them. So, for example, Lisa, one of my values is courage. I believe in my own value as a person, or any time that I say something that's honest, or any time that I am really moving forward with, you know, being a thought leader in my space. That's how I define courage. And then that helps me really show up in the way that I want to show up, because I've identified what that value is to me. So what happens to us if we don't actually identify what our values are? Well, we can experience what's called cognitive dissonance, where our actions are just incongruent with what
Starting point is 00:03:30 we believe. And so the cool thing is there's no right or wrong values. This is really what's important to you. And we make over 100 decisions every day. And so when we can make those decisions based on our values, it helps us really show up in the way that we want to show up. And so when we can make those decisions based on our values, it helps us really show up in the way that we want to show up. And clarifying them can really help us lead in the way that we want to show up and help us overcome setbacks and adversity and show up more purposeful. Cassandra, can you summarize today for us? Sure. I would say, you know, high performers, they know who they are. They grow in their awareness of themselves by identifying their values in a really conscious and deliberate way.
Starting point is 00:04:11 And, you know, you can decide what your values are, which are really your core beliefs, and you want them guiding you right now in this phase of life. And so you can use these values to guide your behaviors and your actions. And what is our power phrase this week? I know myself and I use my values to guide my actions each day.
