Starting point is 00:00:00 Time to check in with Cinder Kampoff today. And Cinder, you're in Nashville. I'm in Nashville. I'm here for the National Speakers Association Conference. And what a fun and amazing city. So much incredible music. And I got my cowboy hat on today. Perfect, perfect.
Starting point is 00:00:14 We are talking today about five ways to develop your grit. And you start us off with a quote. I like this quote by Seth Godin. And he said, everyone has their own Mount Everest. And we are put on this earth to climb. So what are we talking about today? Well, we're talking about this idea of grit, and I'm going to use a definition by Angela Duckworth. And really, grit means having passion and sustained persistence towards your very long-term goals. as the number one predictor of our success because it's connected to our GPA in school
Starting point is 00:00:45 and sport performance and even higher levels of leadership, more income we make. So it's really important for us to develop. And what grit really means is that we stay the course despite obstacles or rejection or failure, and we persevere despite adversity. We have this unwavering commitment to continuous improvement. And when we stick with our grit, we are committed to our own vision. We don't give up hope. So how do we develop our grit? Well, I'm going to start with two ways. The first two ways to develop our grit as I answer that question. And really, grit starts with understanding what
Starting point is 00:01:20 do you really, really want, both short termterm and long-term, for your life and for your career. And the second way we can develop it is grit is manifested by really working towards those long-term goals, the ones that take a really long time to achieve, maybe years to achieve. And that's one of the most rewarding things that we can actually do is work really hard towards our goals. So I'm just going to encourage people to think about what big goals are they really working towards, the ones that really take, you know, years and years of dedication and sacrifice to build towards. Cassandra, what are a few other ways we can develop grit? Well, the third and fourth way we can develop our grit is grit first is really powered by our
Starting point is 00:01:59 purpose and really owning it every day. So not just knowing our purpose, but living it. So I'm going to encourage people to think about, you know, why do they do what they do and how can they live their purpose through their life and through their career? And how do you serve people through your purpose? And the fourth way we can develop our grit is really by choosing empowering emotions that we need in our life and our career and as a leader. You know, emotions like optimism and hope and
Starting point is 00:02:25 confidence and especially gratitude. So I'm just going to encourage people to think about how are they priming their emotions every day and how are they choosing to feel good even when things are hard and how are they really managing their focus so they can feel good throughout the day. And what's the last way we can help develop our grit? Well, this one maybe is something people wouldn't expect, but grit is really powered by our compassion for ourselves and for our forgiveness of ourselves and other people. And so I'm just going to encourage people to think about, you know, can you move on and bounce back really quickly when things don't go perfect? And are you kind
Starting point is 00:02:59 and compassionate to yourself when failure happens? Because when we cultivate our grit every day, we really know where we're going and we get there quicker when we're kinder to ourselves and more compassionate. Is there a final point for today? Sure. You know, grit is really essential for us to keep on growing and be open to change and growth. And it is really the determining factor between giving up and staying committed to our goals, regardless of obstacles. So it's really a game changer because it does predict all of these things like education and our work performance and our sport performance. So consider the importance of really getting clear on what you
Starting point is 00:03:34 want if you're not really sure and then figuring out how to get there because the desire really comes first and the how follows. And give us a summary for today. High performers are gritty. They know what they really, really want and they're clear on why they do what they do. They choose to feel good every day, and they give themselves some grace and compassion along the way. And, Cinder, what's our power phrase to end this week? I am gritty. I am passionate and have a clear vision of a life I am building. I like it.
