Hi friends, my name is Dr. Sindra Kampoff, a national leader in the field of sport and
performance psychology.
Every week I'm on the local radio sharing my top tips on exactly how to develop the
mindset of the world's best, so you can accomplish all your dreams.
Get ready for a jammed packed episode focused on practical tips to help you get after your
goals and step out of your comfort zone.
Let's go.
Time to check in with Cindra Kampoff to find out three ways to multiply your confidence. That's
what we're talking about today. Cindra, start us with your quote. I love this quote by Pat
Summitt. And she said, you have to believe that you're good enough to excel at the highest levels
if you ever expect yourself to get there. So you have to believe you're good enough. Tell us
exactly what we're talking about today.
Well, today we're talking about confidence
and how confidence is this belief and trust in your ability.
And it's your certainty that you're going to be successful.
So having the skills and talent really isn't enough.
You have to believe in those skills.
And I think to cultivate our grit,
to think like the world's best,
we need the confidence to do so.
So we actually know confidence
is one of the strongest predictors of our daily performance and really is essential for our own career and
development. Well, Cinder, what do confident people do? So I'd say confident people and
athletes and leaders and entrepreneurs, they have the trust that they have what it takes to be
successful. And they don't let, you know, mistakes or bad games or less than stellar performances
impact their confidence. They know they're not perfect. And know, mistakes or bad games or less than stellar performances impact their confidence.
They know they're not perfect and they see mistakes as a way that they can continue to
learn.
They also don't believe if they have like a bad performance that they're in a slump,
right?
So they're able to not accept negative labels on themselves and turn things around.
So tell us what confidence isn't because I know a lot of people think, are you confident or
are you arrogant? Yeah, that's a great question, Lisa. And I think that's really important because
that's one thing I want to make clear that confidence isn't about acting cocky or arrogant.
And so when I work with, you know, athletes and entrepreneurs and leaders, I'm really clear that
being mentally strong is not about outer arrogance. It's more about inner arrogance and confident
people actually don't brag. They don't feel like they need to shout, you know, their greatness from
the rooftops. I think that mentally strong people are really confidently humble. And I love this
quote by Norman Vincent Peale. And he said, people with humility don't think less of themselves.
They just think about themselves less. I love that. Yeah. What's the first step
then to building confidence if we need it? So I would say in my book, Beyond Grit, I talk about
10 decisions to be confident. And the first decision is really that we have to make a
decision that it does take constant nurturing. And even the best athletes and leaders will say
that their confidence can be fragile.
There's this great quote by Joe Montana, who was the quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers,
and I think four-time Super Bowl champion. And he talked about how confidence is a very fragile
thing. So we can make a decision to let mistakes and failures and negative people impact our
confidence, or we can choose confidence on
a daily basis.
And what's the second decision that we can make in order to be confident?
I think the second decision is really to remind ourselves of our accomplishments.
And this is actually one of the most powerful sources of confidence, is just being able
to remember your past performances and your past experiences and achievements.
And so when we think about the good
things that have happened in the past, we're more likely to believe that we can do it in the future
because it's really like tangible evidence that we've done it, right? So I think one thing we can
do is just remind ourselves of how we've improved our skills over time. What is another decision
that we can make to help us? This is one of my favorite and most impactful. And this one is about putting on your confidence
armor. And what I mean by confidence armor is this mindset of, you know, not taking things
personally. And when we have our confidence armor on, think about it as like an armor,
like Iron Man, you know, around you. And, you know, when you have your confidence armor,
you can process feedback, kind of like a text message, applying the technical things, but not taking it personally. And so, you know, I'd say really confident people don't allow
other people to kind of sear their confidence.
Cinder, what's your final point for today?
My final point is confidence is a choice that we can make every day. And it's your belief
and trust in your ability. And we can intentionally decide today to even take more control of our
confidence. And even if we feel like we're confident today, it does take constant nurturing.
So what is the power phrase that we go forward with this week?
I like this one. I choose confidence. I choose to believe and trust in my ability.
We should all do that and strive to do that every day. Cindra, if people are interested
in following along with your work or learning more about this particular topic, what's the best strive to do that every day. Cindra, if people are interested in following along with your work or learning more about
