Our topic is saying hello to fear. Cendra,
Starting point is 00:00:31 start us off with a quote. I like this quote by Dale Carnegie. He said, fear doesn't exist anywhere except in the mind. So what inspired this particular topic? Well, all of the people that I work with one-on-one, and that might be athletes or executives, they tell me about the fear that they experience. And so they all feel fear when they're pushing hard towards their goals and dreams. And because fear applies to all of us, and we can't grow towards the person we're meant to become without actually fear. So, for example, they might fear speaking their mind more often, and they might fear that no one will listen, or they won't be taken seriously. Or they fear going after a big goal, knowing it's something
Starting point is 00:01:10 that they really want to go after, but they are scared to go after it. And I think we can all relate to those two examples. So we're going to talk today about how we need to say hello to fear, and there's a few fear facts in my new book, Beyond Grit for Business, that we'll talk through. Cinder, what's the most important thing for us to understand about fear itself? Well, it applies to all of us. And we might fear, for example, embarrassment or rejection, or we might fear not reaching an outcome. Or sometimes people fear like a lack of control. And we can all experience it, but I might experience it differently
Starting point is 00:01:45 than you might experience it. So the quote today that you used was about how fear exists in the mind. Can you tell us more about that? Sure. So I would say fear lives in the future. And what I mean by that is when we feel fear, we are focused on the future. And we can't experience fear when we're reflecting on like the past or when we're focusing on the present. And so it's a future-based emotion. And likely we feel fear when we're kind of thinking about the worst case scenario. So for example, what if I go for this big goal and I don't reach it? Or what if I speak my mind and no one listens? And so I think what's important to know about that is we do experience it and think about
Starting point is 00:02:22 and feel fear because we're focused on the future. And so we want to be our best in the present moment and release some of that fear. Why is embracing our fear really important to reaching our goals? Well, I think everything we fear is really self-created. And so whenever we're taking on a new project or trying something new or going after a big goal, we're going to experience fear. So just by knowing that we're striking ourselves, we're going to feel the fear. And so I think what's important to know is that the thing that we're really scared about in this way actually creates the greatest growth opportunity for us. And so what's important to keep stepping into our potential is to do the things that are just a
Starting point is 00:02:59 little bit scary. And so our goal shouldn't be to eliminate that fear, but to address the fear holding us back and make some courageous decisions despite being nervous or fearful of what might take place. So what is the difference between fear and courage? Well, I'd say courage is really feeling the fear and moving towards it. It's not the absence of fear. And so we can't actually be courageous without feeling the fear. So we need to feel the fear some way to move towards courage. And so, again, the goal isn't to be fearless and completely lacking fear, but just the goal is to fear less.
Starting point is 00:03:34 That's how I would describe it. And I think what's important is that being courageous will help you move towards the goal that you're really seeking. How would you summarize today for us? Well, I would say the world's best choose courage over fear, and they feel the fear, but they don't let it stop them from doing what they want to or what they were designed to or going after some of their big goals. And so high performers know that when they feel the fear, it just means that they're doing something important and meaningful and that they're moving towards something that really will make a big impact in their lives.
