We check in with Cinder Kampoff today, and today we're going to talk about what you want in 2023.
Starting point is 00:00:32 And Cinder, everybody's talking goals, everybody's talking resolutions. What do you got for us today as a quote? I love this quote by Les Brown. He said, your goals are the roadmaps that guide you and show you what is possible for your life. Well, it's a really good time to consider new beginnings. Can you tell us why? It's a great time to start really thinking about new beginnings, like New Year's Day or sometimes even your birthday. Even Mondays can feel like a great time to restart. And that's why a lot of people set goals at the beginning of the year, because we're extra motivated to turn the page and to really consider what's next. And so in general, we want to set goals over resolutions because resolutions can feel really short-lived. And this new year really provides a great time to think big picture.
Starting point is 00:01:14 What do you really want for the year? Lean in, go for it. So when we're considering our goals, what's the first thing that we should think about? Well, the first thing we should think about is to write about three goals down for the year. Too many more than that's going to make us feel overwhelmed. So between one and three goals, and we want to ink it, not just think it. What that means is that the most successful people write their goals down because they help direct our focus and keep us going in the face of adversity. And so we know actually from the research that successful people really write their goals down and keep that vision for themselves in mind for the year. You also have three other strategies for us to consider that are science-based. What's the first
Starting point is 00:01:53 one? Well, the first strategy is that the best goals are specific and they also stretch you to push harder than usual. We call these stretch goals. And so as you're writing down your goals, write them down in a way that pushes you. And so as you're writing down your goals, write them down in a way that pushes you. And the next thing is to really think about how can you break that goal down into bite-sized pieces. So for example, if you said, I want to volunteer for 100 hours this year, or I want to read for 100 hours, something like that, you want to think about how can you do two hours every week to break it down. Okay, so what's your second strategy? My second strategy is to plan for exactly what you want to do.
Starting point is 00:02:29 After you break down those kind of bite-sized pieces, think about how do you want to accomplish that. And that helps us really think about obstacles and keep us on track. And you might even consider, you know, writing, putting something in your phone kind of as a reminder. Maybe it's a calendar invite or an alarm. Let's say, for example, if you wanted to do something, you know, over lunch every day, put it into your calendar so you can decline a lunch meeting. All right. And you have one more strategy for us? Yes. There's actually some research that if you want to quit something, you should try what's called a penalty clause. This means that you kind of, for example, fine yourself if you fail. So if you put money on the line for yourself, there'll be consequences if you don't follow through. So think about if it's something you
Starting point is 00:03:13 want to quit, like quit eating something specific or quit smoking, how could you try that strategy? And Cinder, what's your final point? The final point is you're thinking about your goals this year is to be flexible. It takes time to create new habits and to build routines. And even writing into some flexibility into that goal. We know, for example, you're going to be more successful if you say, well, I want to exercise five to seven days instead of the full seven days. So give yourself some flexibility.
Starting point is 00:03:42 And finally, I'm just going to encourage everyone to think about what is it they want to accomplish this year. It's a great time to reflect on last year and to think about and write down those three goals to keep you motivated and focused for the year to come. Cinder, can you summarize today for us? Yes. High performers set goals because that gives them focus and direction. They write their goals down, and this helps you follow through and keep them in mind for the year. So I'm going to encourage you to write down those steps and be flexible along the way.
Starting point is 00:04:09 And what is our power phrase for this week? I am focused on my goals in 2023.
