Get ready for a jammed packed episode focused on practical tips to help you get after your goals and step out of your comfort zone. Let's go. Time to check in with Cinder Kampoff. We talk about mindset shifts to stay gritty today. And Cinder, you usually start us off with a quote from one of your favorite authors. What do you have today? I like this quote from Angela Duckworth. And it said, grit is sticking with your future day in, day out, and not just for a week, not for a month, but for years.
Starting point is 00:00:46 Why did you choose that particular quote? Well, I think this time of the year, as we think about the beginning of the year, it's great to think about our grit. And grit is really having passion and perseverance for your long-term goals. It comes from your passion and your deep interest in your work and what you do. And your perseverance allows you to be resilient in face of adversity. And when you're gritty, you're committed to continuous improvement. So you're committed to your vision, yourself, and you don't give up hope. You do what it takes to reach your goals.
Starting point is 00:01:16 Why is grit really important then? Well, grit actually has been described as the number one predictor of our own success. And it's really an essential ingredient to be open to change and growth. And it's the determining factor between giving up and staying committed despite obstacles. So it really is a game changer, not only in your life, in school, if you own a business or in your sport, because it does predict our performance every day. So, Cyndra, what is the first mindset shift that we need to implement in order to stay gritty? Well, if we know that grit really is important, I think what's
Starting point is 00:01:50 helpful to know is that, you know, setbacks and adversity is really a given as we go after our goals. And it's really about how we respond to those obstacles that make a difference. And so the next time, you know, you experience some kind of setback reaching your goals, I think what's helpful is to reframe that difficulty. And I find it helpful to ask myself, OK, how is this happening for me? Like, what's the gift here? And it's really easy to think about why it's happening to us, right, where we kind of feel like the victim.
Starting point is 00:02:18 So when we're faced with a setback, we want to just ask ourselves, what can we learn? What can we gain? And try to find an empowering meaning in the difficulty. Yeah, just what you said, what can we learn? That's something that always goes through my mind. Like, what am I supposed to learn here when there's something difficult happening? What's the second mindset shift? The second mindset shift is to think about, you know, that reaching your goals and your dreams isn't going to come easy. And sometimes we underestimate how difficult it can be. And so we feel intimidated and maybe we give up easier. And so one way to
Starting point is 00:02:51 tap into your grit is to anticipate a difficulty in the future, you know, in advance. And so just think, you know, as you think about your goals, maybe this year or long term, what are some difficulties you might experience and how do you want to approach those difficulties and plan for it? So the idea is like we want to have grit, not just quit. All right, grit, not just quit. What's the other mindset shift that we can use to keep going? I think that the last one that we're going to talk about today, just know that you're going to get off track. I have a good friend named Shannon Huffman Polson. She's the first woman to fly an Apache helicopter for the U.S. Army, and she actually wrote a book called The Grit Factor. And she talks about if a pilot gets a little off course,
Starting point is 00:03:31 over time they end up in a very long way from their destination. And so reaching your goals isn't a straight line. And if you get off course at the beginning, you end up in a different direction, a different destination than you intended. So I think what's important is to really get clarity up front. Where do you want to go? And know the obstacles will get in your way and you can plan for those. What's your final point today, Sandra? My final point is that we have more energy to sustain ourselves and our goals
Starting point is 00:04:00 over years and decades when we really cultivate our grit. And so cultivating our grit is important for our success and our sustained performance over time. And so I encourage you to think about how can you stay gritty today, tomorrow, this month, this year. And, Cinder, what is our power phrase this week? I am gritty and I'm passionate and have a clear vision of the life I'm building. And if people want to get in touch with you or follow along, maybe grab one of the two books that you've written, where do we go?
