Let's go.
Time to check in with Cinder Kampoff. Today, we talk about quieting our inner critic. And Cinder,
this is a big one. You're going to start us off with a quote. I like this quote by Robert
Kawasaki. He said, it's not what you say out of your mouth that determines your life. It is what
you whisper to yourself that has the most power. What you whisper to yourself that has the most power. What inspired the topic today?
Well, as an executive and performance coach, I work a lot with people one-on-one, and I hear
all the ways that we get in our own way. And one way today we're going to talk about is through
our own inner critic. So we can create these barriers without even realizing it. And our
inner critic, we all each have one. It's just things like, you know,
I'm such an idiot. I could have done better. We're very hard on ourselves.
And so will you tell us a little bit more about what you mean by that inner critic? I know that
voice that we all hear. Exactly. Yeah. It's that disempowering inner voice that
can be angry or judgmental, maybe even show up as a procrastinator. And when we believe our inner critic, which we
all have, it impacts our self-confidence, our self-worth, which then leads to shame.
And we don't connect with our own purpose when we believe it. And so, you know, as you're listening,
just ask yourself, how does your inner critic show up? And it's likely that your inner critic
shows up through your thoughts, your emotions, and your behaviors. And so it leads to us, you know,
wanting to give up, maybe being afraid to fail, or, you know, not being open to taking chances.
So what's the first step that you would take to silence that?
I think the first step is always awareness. Awareness of, you know, what your inner critic
might say. And I think what's helpful to know is that all of our
inner critic messages are actually just lies. And we want to really uncover those lies just by
listening and paying attention and then asking ourselves really what the truth is.
What's helpful to know is that our inner critic is just a habit. It's just been the way of us
thinking for a while. And sometimes we believe those thoughts, you know, we think that we are
those thoughts. For example, if think that we are those thoughts.
For example, if our inner critic says, like, I'm just an average student, you know, we believe that
thought. And so what's helpful to know is that we can create a new message and we can transform and
quiet that inner critic. So how do we go about transforming that inner critic? Well, think about
it as, you know, our thoughts are just like habits.
Think about it like plants, right? If you stop watering them, they don't grow.
And so we want to stop watering them first and then work to create a more empowering belief
and thought. And so just ask yourself, what do you really want to believe and believe? And what
would be, you know, a new thought that's more realistic? A great place to start there would
be with an I am
phrase and thinking and reminding yourself of all the ways that you are good enough. And so, you
know, the key really is that we want to practice that new belief once we've decided that and that
we take commitment and change, but it is something that we can all do. So what else do you suggest
that we do when we experience that inner critic that pops up?
I would say just be curious with it, you know, and asking yourself, when does your inner critic
really go into overdrive and what triggers it? You know, what happens to your mind and your body
when you feel that inner critic? And just know that you can challenge those messages to really
step into your best and telling yourself what the truth really is. So, Cinder, how would you summarize today for us?
I would say, you know, your inner critic is your disempowering inner voice
that can sound judgmental or scared,
and we just want to be aware of that inner critic to reduce it.
We all have it.
And it tends to tell us lies,
so we want to respond to it and challenge more of those beliefs
with a more truthful statement about ourselves instead. What is the power phrase to it and challenge more of those beliefs with a more
truthful statement about ourselves instead. What is the power phrase that you're going to
send us forward with? I like this one today, Lisa. I talk to myself powerfully instead of
listening to my inner critic. I like that. Let's all practice that this week. If we want to check
