We check in with Cendra Kampoff today and today's topic with Cendra is grit over gift. Let's start
off with a quote, Cendra. I like this quote by Angela Duckworth and she said, grit is sticking
with your future day in and day out, not just for a week, not just for a month, but for years.
So tell us why you chose that
particular quote. Well, I first started really deeply kind of studying and thinking about grit
actually after watching Angela Duckworth's TED Talk. And it got me thinking a lot about successful
leaders and athletes and entrepreneurs that I work with and how I see them develop their grit over
time. And the leaders that I really see crush it. They know what their goals are. They know why they're pursuing in them. And they keep going despite
setbacks and adversity. So why is grit really important for us? Well, I think without really
understanding what your goals are or why you're going after them, it's really impossible to stay
devoted to any pursuit. And so being gritty really means that you don't give up. You don't switch
gears when it's hard or you're bored or you're tired.
And your drive keeps you going and focused on your goals.
And you can keep going despite setbacks and failures and difficulties.
And I think when you have grit, you really have this inner drive and this inner strength to go the extra mile.
And if you think about the people that you most admire, I could imagine that that person has grit.
Sure. And you've said that grit is the number one predictor for success, but why is that?
Well, the research is pretty profound.
For example, here's some of the findings just in the research in general about the power of grit.
So when we know when we're grittier, we're happier.
We work towards our goals with more satisfaction.
Grittier salespeople are more likely to keep their jobs.
Grittier high school students are more likely to graduate.
Even grittier people are more likely to stay in their marriages, which is surprising.
And we know from the research, grittier athletes are more likely to be successful.
So that's one of the reasons it's been described as the number one predictor of our success.
So we want to be that way, but how do we increase our ability to do that?
I think first, you know, getting some clarity on what your goals really are, what are they short term and long term, and, you know, knowing why you're pursuing them.
So also connecting, you know, a reason with that goal.
And, you know, it's part of the high performance mindset is really to have this grit. And we know when, you know, two people who are equally talented, the grittier person
performs better. And so when you have no more grit, you have more energy to keep going. And
that's why, you know, you can see people continue moving forward for long stretches and not throw
in the towel really because they have this grit. And the cool thing is that it's not innate.
It can be developed.
All right, so you titled this Grit Over Gift.
What is the title all about?
Well, I think the assumption is that grit is something that we're just born with,
but we can develop it, and it just takes practice.
So first getting some clarity on where you're really going, what are your goals,
and then sticking
with them, keeping them front of mind and keeping them somewhere that you can see them is really key.
What's your final point today?
Well, you have more energy to sustain your goals over time when you cultivate your grit,
when you really work to develop it. And I'm going to have everyone just consider how you
might complete the sentence just to kind of get you started thinking about grit.
So I am passionate about blank and I need to blank so I can achieve blank.
All right.
So I am passionate about blank and I need to blank so that I can achieve blank.
That's a good one to remember.
Do you have a power phrase, too, that we are going to use taking us through the week?
Yes, it is this.
I am gritty and I am passionate
and have a clear vision for the life I'm building. And Cinder, how do people get in touch with you
