Hi friends, my name is Dr. Sindra Kampoff, a national leader in the field of sport and
performance psychology.
Every week I'm on the local radio sharing my top tips on exactly how to develop the
mindset of the world's best, so you can accomplish all your dreams.
Get ready for a jammed, packed episode focused on practical tips to help you get after your
goals and step out of your comfort zone.
Let's go.
Hey, we check in with Cinder Kampoff today to talk a little bit about some positivity
on this day. Cinder, you start us off with a quote before we chat. What's your quote today?
Dale Carnegie said this, do the thing you fear to do and keep on doing it.
That is the quickest and surest way ever yet discovered to conquer your fear.
I like that one. What inspired the topic?
Well, today we're talking about the number one barrier to our potential.
And I see that number one barrier as fear.
You know, I work with a lot of coaching clients, both executives and athletes,
and they experience fear as they're pushing towards their goals.
And they need some one-on-one coaching to address their fear
because it really does apply to all of us.
And the thing is, we can't really grow
to the person we're meant to become without fear.
And so, you know, fear might show up for you
as wanting to speak your mind at work,
but fearing no one will listen
or you won't be taken seriously.
Or maybe fear might show up for you
as like you're trying to push towards a really big goal,
but you're scared to kind of go for it.
Or maybe you just fear what other people think.
You know, there's a new term in psychology,
they're called FOPO.
Oh, no.
Fear of other people's opinions.
Oh, really?
There we go.
I don't need another one of those things, right?
What's the most important thing
for us to understand about fear?
I think the most important thing for us to understand about fear?
I think the most important thing is that it applies to all of us. In a lot of ways,
it keeps us safe, but it also holds us back. And we can fear pain or embarrassment or rejection.
Sometimes we fear the unknown or the outcome or loneliness. And the key is that we all experience it. And but it's also personal,
meaning what I fear might be different than what you fear. But it does hold us back from really stepping into our potential more often. I know sometimes we've talked about fear being
future based. Can you tell us a little bit more about that? Yeah, absolutely. So fear lives in
the future. And when we feel fear, absolutely. So fear lives in the future.
And when we feel fear, we're focused on something about the future, not on the past or in the present.
And we can't experience fear without reflecting, right?
Well, what I'm saying is fear is future-based.
It's a future-based emotion.
So you're likely imagining the worst-case scenario when you feel the fear.
And you're at your best, your highest potential, high performance when you're in the present moment. And so that's really where we
want to get instead of in the future. Okay. And so why is it important for us to embrace fear
kind of to reach our goals? Well, everything that we fear is self-created and meaning when we're
trying something new or taking on a new project,
you know, going after a big goal, we're stretching ourselves.
We're going to experience fear.
And I love this acronym for fear called false evidence appearing real.
And, you know, again, it's self-created.
It is false evidence and we think that it's real.
And so the very thing that you fear can actually provide the biggest growth experience.
So doing what is scary will allow you to address that fear. And so your goal is to completely
eliminate the fear, but notice when it's holding you back and make a courageous decision to fight
the fear. Well, what's the fine line or the difference, I guess I should say, between fear
and courage then? Yeah, great question. I would say courage is feeling the fear and moving towards it anyway.
You know, we can't really be courageous if we don't feel fear. So in fact, you know, it's
impossible. You need to feel the fear in order to act in a courageous way. So again, the goal isn't
to kind of be fearless, you know, completely lacking fear, but the goal is to fear less.
And so, you know, fears might be that, you know,
you want to take more action to grow in your business
and you have to take courageous action towards that.
So I'm just going to encourage people,
the next time you notice yourself holding yourself back,
maybe because you're nervous about what other people might think
or you're nervous about failure,
you know, move towards that regardless
because that's courage and you're choosing courage over fear.
How would you summarize today for us?
I would summarize that the world's best, they choose courage instead of fear. And they feel
the fear, but they don't let it hold them back from what they're, you know, what they're doing,
what they have to do, or ultimately what they're designed to do, their purpose. And so high
performers know that when they feel the fear, it means that they're doing something important
and meaningful.
Well, a power phrase is something that we can say to ourselves in our heads or even out loud in front of a mirror.
You give one of those to us every week. What is this week's power phrase?
I embrace my fear and choose courage instead.
All right.
