It's time to check in with Cinder Kampoff. Get a little positivity going for your day. Cinder,
we talk about how to talk more powerfully to yourself and start us off with one of your quotes.
I like this one from Russ Kyle. He said, watch what you tell yourself. You're likely to believe
it. I use that a lot, or a version of what inspired the topic
today? Well I was reading the study in the Journal of Organizational Behavior and the study found
that the authors found that employees who receive mindset training like what we're talking about
today experienced increased mental performance, self-efficacy or belief in self, enthusiasm,
job satisfaction, optimism. And so the point of today
is really that we need strategies in our mental toolbox to really combat stress and overwhelm
that we can all experience every day. So we're talking about our own self-talk, the way we talk
to ourselves, and what's so important to know about the thoughts that we have? Well, we've
developed our thought patterns early in our life. And so think about
our negative inner critic. We're going to talk about it as today, you know, was developed to
protect ourselves from harm. And by the time you're adults, you really don't need these same
thought patterns in the same way. And many times, you know, they instead of protecting us from harm,
they sabotage our success or limit our potential or lead to us playing small. So today what we're
going to talk about is really being intentional about both thought patterns. And even though
they might be habitual or automatic, we can retrain our mind to think more powerfully and
to develop new neural pathways so that our thought patterns really change.
And so what is the first strategy that you would have us use to put in our mental toolbox?
And why is this mental toolbox so important?
Yeah, that's a great question, Lisa.
I would say, you know, we all need strategies in our mental toolbox to really combat this inner critic.
And we want to channel our inner coach instead.
And what a mental toolbox can do is just help us develop multiple tools so that when we're struggling, we have,
you know, different tools that we can use to really help us be our best more often.
And the first one we're going to talk about today is just this idea of reframing.
And reframing means reframing stressful events as learning opportunities. You know, we all know
that negative events and obstacles, we experience them every day, right? But they can really be ways that we
can learn about ourselves and what's important to us, and even our desire to reach our goals.
And so the first tool we can put in our toolkit is reframing, which just means that when we're
experiencing a difficulty or setback, we ask ourselves, what's the opportunity?
Okay, what's the opportunity here? And then what's the second strategy that we can use? A second strategy would just be to be mindful of what are triggering our
negative emotions or thoughts. And, you know, the first step, even before we reframe, is just to
notice our thoughts and feelings more from an observer perspective. And this just allows us to
see what's really going on with us and ask ourselves, you know, really what's activating my negativity or my frustration or my anger.
And awareness is always the first step in really thinking more powerfully about yourself.
So what's the last tool that we will put in our mental toolkit today?
Well, this one's my favorite.
And, you know, we do need awareness of our thoughts and our emotions.
But this one is called
the truth meter and I wrote about it in my new book beyond grit for business and it involves
just asking ourselves three questions when we notice a limiting thought the first question
is this thought true and what it allows us to do is just take a step back and say you know really
is this thought true or not the second thought second thought or the second question we ask ourselves on that thought is, is this thought serving me? And by
serving me just means like, is it really helping me? Is it helping me step into my best? And the
last one is, what's a more empowering thought that I could choose right now? And when I do this
with my clients, usually they say, you know, the answers to question one and two are no,
you know, that's not true, it's not serving me. And this is really allows us to take a step back
and also use reframing and be aware. And just choose it, you know, it's likely that you can
always choose a more empowering thought when you're stuck.
Cinder, how would you summarize today for us?
Well, I'd say these mental strategies allow you to just remain optimistic and see life with more of a clear lens.
And today we've been talking about channeling our inner coach, right?
That coach we have inside of us to allow ourselves to see a different perspective and solution and opportunity instead of just letting our inner critic run the show.
And so I think, you know, the future of your career and your life is directly
tied to seeing an opportunity in the difficulty. And this is a few of the tools that can help you
do so. And what is our power phrase today? I talk to myself powerfully each and every day.
