Checking in on a 2025. What do you want in 2025? Cyndra, start us off with a quote.
Starting point is 00:00:33 I love this quote by Mel Robbins. She's a speaker and an author. She said, when you set a goal, your brain opens up a task list. I do love Mel Robbins, too. She's got a great podcast. It's a good time to consider new beginnings. Tell us why. Well, like New Year's Day or even your birthday or even Monday, it's like today we're talking on a Monday. It's a great time just to restart. And this is why people
Starting point is 00:00:55 like to set resolutions and goals at the beginning of the year because you're extra motivated to turn a page and reset. But in general, Lisa, we want to set goals at the beginning of the year, not resolutions, because resolutions generally are short-lived. And generally what I'd recommend people to do is write three or four goals for the year. These could be related to anything that you want to grow in this year. And this new year really provides a great time just to think the big picture and lean in and go for it. So when we're considering our goals, personally, what's the first thing that we should think about? The first thing you should think about is this quote in my field called, ink it, don't just think it. And kind of what that means is people are more successful if
Starting point is 00:01:35 they write their goals down. There's some research by legendary researchers, Black and Latham, that suggests that successful people are goal-oriented, so they have a vision for themselves and their future. And what goals do is they direct our focus, and so we can persist despite adversity. And the idea is, you know, out of sight, out of mind. If you don't have them written down, you know, goals can just be forgotten, or you can forget about them and not keep them front and center. So you also have some other strategies for us to consider that are really science-based. What's the first one? The first one is that the best goals are specific,
Starting point is 00:02:10 but they also stretch you to push harder than usual. And so if you write your goals down, just write it down in a way that really pushes you. Something outside your comfort zone that's going to help you grow into who you can become this year. And then when you write your goals down, it's useful to break it up into who you become this year. And then when you write your goals down, it's useful to break it up into really specific goals or bite-sized pieces. So let's say, for example, if you want to lose 20 pounds this year, you know, write down that maybe you'd like to lose a half a pound a week. Or if you want to spend more quality time with your family,
Starting point is 00:02:40 you know, maybe that's like two more hours each week. Or if you want to exercise regularly, commit to the 30 minutes, four days a week. But the idea is that sometimes our big goals for the year can be really overwhelming. And so we want to really step down and think about what's my process, what's going to be the small steps that I can accomplish. And what is the second strategy that you want to talk about? Well, the second strategy is consider what you need to believe about yourself to reach those goals after you write them. You know, your identity is the most consistent thing about you because it drives everything that you do. And so when you
Starting point is 00:03:12 think about, you know, your three or four goals this year, you know, ask yourself, what do I need to believe about myself to reach those goals? And I think it's really helpful to write down, you know, five or so I am statements that support your goals and that you could say to yourself, you know, perhaps each day. For example, maybe something like I'm consistent or I'm confident or I do hard things or I'm focused on my health. Those are all about things about who you are and your identity. All right. Give me one more strategy. One more strategy is to post your goal somewhere. You know, maybe put it in your wallet, put them inside your planner, write them on your bathroom mirror. Some people do it on a dry erase marker, you know, have them framed by your bed.
Starting point is 00:03:52 But just remind yourself of what you're aiming for each day and write those power statements, you know, your identity statements next to your goals. And this will increase your chances of success and keep you motivated and focused. What's the final point you have for us today, Cendra? The final point around goals in 2025 is just to be flexible. You know, it takes time to build new habits and build routines. And so give yourself a slack. For example, some research shows that if you achieve more, if you set a goal, you know, of a range, like five days of exercise or five to seven days of meditation instead of like, you know, seven days a week. So be flexible. Just remember that, you know, you're doing the
Starting point is 00:04:31 best that you possibly can. And we should be spending some time thinking about what we want to accomplish today. Absolutely. And so I would just say, you know, keep those goals in mind and write down those three or four goals to help you stay motivated and focused for the year to come. Do you have a power phrase for us this week? I do. It is I'm focused on my goals and I'm ready to crush it this year. All right. Well, we'll go into 2025 with a positive outlook.
