Hi, friends. My name is Dr. Sindra Kampoff, a national leader in the field of sport and
performance psychology. Every week, I'm on the local radio sharing my top tips on exactly
how to develop the mindset of the world's best so you can accomplish all your dreams.
Get ready for a jammed, packed episode focused on practical tips to help you get after your
goals and step out of your comfort zone. Let's go.
We're checking in with Cinder Kampoff today, and today's topic is fear facts. She's got four of
them. Cinder, start us off with one of your quotes. I like this quote by Howard Schultz. He's
the former CEO of Starbucks, and he said, risk more than others think is safe. Dream more than
others think is practical. So how did you come up with this topic today?
Well, I think at the beginning of the year, it's so easy to let fear get in the way of your goals.
You know, but the thing we're going to talk about today is that fear applies to all of us.
And if you're really pushing yourself into who you tend to come this year, you will experience
fear. And we can't really grow towards the person that we're meant to become without fear. We can't really reach our goals and our dreams without fear. And I think,
you know, as people are listening, just reminding them that everything that they want
really involves getting over their fear, because it means trying something new or
trying a different approach to get really what you want.
Can you tell us what the most important thing for us to understand is about fear?
I would say that fear applies to all of us. That's the most important thing for us to understand is about fear. Sure. I would say that fear applies to all of us. That's the most important thing for us to
understand. And we can fear a lot of different things, difficulty, embarrassment, rejection,
maybe the outcome or lack of control. You know, for example, if I try something new, will I fail?
And if I don't get the position that I applied for this year, you know, what will happen? So notice there's a lot of what ifs when we think about fear.
But I think the most important thing is that we all experience it.
However, what I fear might be different than what you fear.
So it's universal, but it's also very personal.
So when we're fearing something, where is our mind at?
Well, that's a really good question, Lisa.
I think the thing to remember about fear is that
fear lives in the future. And when we feel fear, our focus is on the future. So we can't really
experience fear when we're reflecting on the past or when our mind is in the present. So it's a
future-based emotion, and likely you're imagining the worst case scenario. Again, lots of what ifs.
And so if we're at our best and experience, you know,
our highest performance in the present, fear takes us out of that.
So if we are moving towards our goals, we're going to have this fear,
but why is moving towards our fear important for that?
Yeah, again, great question. Because everything you fear is self-created. And so whatever,
you know, you're trying something new, maybe taking on a new project,
going after a new goal or stressing yourself like emotionally or physically in some way,
you're going to experience fear and anxiety. And the first thing you can, you know, the first thing,
you know, that fear is really important to see is that it provides a growth experience. And the
very thing that you fear is the thing that will help you reach your goals. And so your goal should
not be to eliminate fear, because, you know, we want to take action towards it instead.
It sounds pretty obvious, but what's the difference between fear and courage?
Well, courage is feeling the fear and really walking towards it and walking into it. And so
courage is not the absence of fear. In fact, you really can't feel courage without fear.
And so you need to feel fear in order to't feel courage without fear. And so you need
to feel fear in order to ask in a courageous way. And so I don't think the goal should be that
you're fearless, you know, completely lack fear, because fear can sometimes serve a purpose,
but the goal is to fear less. So fears will be there as you continue to try something new and
take courageous action. So being courageous means that you have the bravery to move forward towards the fear
and step into it. Will you give us a little example?
Sure. The thing that we fear is what we need to really pick action towards. So for example,
when I wrote my first book, Beyond Grit, I was so scared at first. You know, when I was writing,
I thought no one was going to read it. But if I also knew that this is what I was meant to do,
right, I needed to move towards it, even though it was scary.
And so maybe for you, that might be that you want a position that pays more money or you need to apply for a new position, right?
That's scary.
And, you know, there's lots of what ifs.
What if I'm rejected?
What if I don't like it as much?
Maybe you want to ask a different person out or you want to take some kind of courageous action this year. And I think the key that I want you to remember is that we have to move towards what scares us,
because that's what allows us to become the person we're meant to become.
Sandra, how would you summarize today for us?
I would say the world's best choose courage instead of fear. And they feel the fear,
but they don't let it keep them from doing what they have to do or want to do or were designed
to do. So we want to be, or want to do or were designed to do.
So we want to be, we want to fear less, not be fearless.
Fear less. And what is this week's power phrase?
I embrace my fear and choose courage instead.
