High Performance Mindset | Learn from World-Class Leaders, Consultants, Athletes & Coaches about Mindset - 697: No Grit, No Pearl

Episode Date: August 13, 2025

In this inspiring episode of the High Performance Mindset, Dr. Cindra Kamphoff explores how grit is the foundation for achieving your biggest goals and dreams.   She shares the powerful metaphor of ...the pearl—how something rare and valuable begins with irritation. Just like a pearl forms when an oyster transforms a piece of grit over time, our greatest achievements come from leaning into challenges and staying committed through discomfort.   You’ll also learn practical ways to strengthen your grit muscle, such as committing to one challenging action every day, surrounding yourself with people who push you, and focusing on deliberate—not just repetitive—practice.   This Week’s Power Phrase: “I am gritty. I do the things others won’t to achieve the things others can’t. I put in the hours necessary for success.”   Quote of the Week: “Grit is not just having resilience in the face of failure, but also having deep commitments that you remain loyal to over many years.” — Angela Duckworth   Tune in to discover how to develop the grit you need to create your own “pearl”—the legacy, dream, or goal you’re deeply committed to achieving.   REQUEST A FREE MENTAL BREAKTHROUGH CALL WITH DR. Starting point is 00:00:00 Hi, friends. My name is Dr. Cindera Campoff, a national leader in the field of sport and performance psychology. Every week, I'm on the local radio sharing my top tips on exactly how to develop the mindset of the world's best so you can accomplish all your dreams. Get ready for a jammed, packed episode, focus on practical tips to help you get after your goals and step out of your comfort zone. Let's go. Time to check in with Cinder Campoff today, and we talk about one of the things that she is just an expert on grit. It's called No Grit, No Pearl. Sandra, start us off with a quote today. I like this quote by Angela Duckworth, and she said grit is not just having resilience in the space of failure, but also having deep commitments that you remain loyal to for over many years.
Starting point is 00:00:44 So what exactly are we talking about today? Today we're talking about Britt and how it's not just about bouncing back from failure but staying committed to your vision over years of discipline and discomfort. So I'm going to start with this. A pearl begins with an irritation, like literally, you know, a piece of. of grit or sand gets alongside the oyster, and it's really uncomfortable. But rather than rejecting the irritable, the oyster actually transforms it. And layer by layer, it becomes something valuable. Something rare, a pearl. And I want us to think about how you're the oyster. Like, the pearl is the masterpiece you're developing your goal, your dream, your legacy. But there's
Starting point is 00:01:20 no pearl without the grit and the irritant. Uh-huh. So what is the key lesson in this story about no grit, no pearl? Well, I say the key lesson is that every grade. achievement, you know, whether it's a gold medal or a thriving business or just a meaningful relationship actually requires challenge and sacrifice. And if it's worth it, you know, it will come easy. For example, research by a psychologist named Anders Erickson actually shows that mastery takes about 10,000 hours of deliberate practice. So what that means is just not repetition, but it's really intentional, focused work on growing your skills. And what gets in the way of us developing grit? I think Lisa, that's a great question. I think most people resist
Starting point is 00:02:02 the struggle and resist the challenge, but that resistance is what actually stops progress. So we know high performers, whether, you know, that's athletes, your musicians, or entrepreneurs, they really lean into the discomfort. They honor the struggle, and they know that, you know, mastery really takes time and feedback and a willingness to fail. Now, I know people are wondering, like, can anybody develop grit, or is this something that people, certain people are born with? Yeah, that's a great question. I would say grit is absolutely a skill that can be developed.
Starting point is 00:02:34 Just like the skill of confidence or focus, it's really a mindset that you can train. And it starts with clarity on your purpose, clarity on your goals, and then showing up consistently, you know, even when your motivation fades. So grit grows through experience, through reflection, and surrounding yourself with people who challenge you and support you.
Starting point is 00:02:53 How can we start building grit, like today after we're listening to you? I would say one way that you can start is just by choosing one hard thing that you're going to do every day on purpose. And, you know, it could be like waking up early to train or having a difficult conversation or committing to 30 minutes to focused work, you know, with no distractions. And the more you lean into discomfort intentionally, the more you build that internal grit muscle. So then, Sandra, what's the difference between just putting in your time and putting in deliberate practice there? yeah absolutely well deliberate practice isn't just about kind of going through the motions it's really like focused structured kind of goal oriented work and it you know it's working on specific skills that stress you know getting feedback making adjustments um and it's not it's not comfortable but that's
Starting point is 00:03:45 actually where growth happens and if you're not stretching yourself or reflecting like how to improve you know it's not deliberate what is the takeaway for us here today the takeaways are if you want to develop your plural. I'm going to encourage you to ask yourself a few questions. First, what is, you know, one goal that you're deeply committed to? And what distractions are stealing your time or energy? And you know, what deliberate actions can you take this week to move forward? And who can you ask to support you in that progress? All right. We're going to remember all those things this week. And what is the power phrase that you give us? I am gritty. I do the things others won't do to achieve this others, the things others can't. And I put in the hours necessary for success.
