Episode Date: September 23, 2016

High performers focus on their improvement and reaching their standard of excellence instead of comparing themselves to others. They stay focused on their race. High performers know that people who f...ocus on others struggle to reach greatness. Comparison is the quickest way to let your team’s and your individual performance suffer. Instead, high performers celebrate others and their accomplishments and ask themselves, “What can I learn from this person?”   Affirmation this Week: I pursue my standard of excellence. I stay focused on my lane and my progress. I work to be my best one step at a time.

Sindra in studio with us on a Monday morning. Good morning. Thanks for having me. Monday. Happy Monday. Yeah, you're awfully chipper on a Monday for being up really late last night at U.S. Bank Stadium, but what a great time, huh? Man, it was so amazing. Just everything. The atmosphere was just so... I can't believe you have your hearing. No, it is a little like my... You're ringing a little bit. Like you just came from
Starting point is 00:00:58 a rock concert or something? Exactly. So today we're talking about a topic with you that is the do you topic. And I have to be careful when I do this because I've heard this before where it's like you do you and I'll do me. Yeah. But I always screw it up. I'll do you, you do me. No, that's not what I meant. You do you. And that is the topic today.
Starting point is 00:01:18 I love this. So let's talk a little bit about doing you. All right. I'm going to start with a quote by Margaret Young. And she said, often people attempt to start with a quote by Margaret Young. And she said, That's a good quote. Nice. So give us a good example of that. I'm going to choose Simone Biles.
Starting point is 00:01:46 So most of you will probably know who Simone is. She dominated this year in the Olympics and gymnastics, and her elevation and execution was just unmatched. In the floor routine, she performed the Biles, which is her signature move, which includes like a double layout with a half twist. We have never seen anything like this, right? She was unlike anything we've ever seen. And what I love about Simone is she owns her story. So what I mean by
Starting point is 00:02:10 that is, you know, when she was three, her mother actually couldn't care for her because of drug and alcohol addiction. And her grandparents adopted her, became her mom and her dad. And I even saw this week that she tweeted that she had ADHD. So what I love about her is she like is herself, right? And she embraces who she is. And this year during the all around, she won by a 2.1 margin of victory. So this is larger than any gymnast from 1980 to 2012 combined. It's crazy. I mean, that's how much she dominated, right?
Starting point is 00:02:42 Because she was herself. She owned her strengths. And, you know, afterwards she set the record straight. And she said, you know, there was no reason to compare herself to any top male athlete or former, you know, gold medalist in the gymnastics. But she said instead, she embraced her own uniqueness, her stories and gifts. And she said, I'm not the next Usain Bolt or Michael Phelps. I'm the first Simone Files. Nice.
Starting point is 00:03:06 That's awesome. That's great. There was another quote like that recently, too. I can't remember if it was like Lindsey Vonn, and they were talking to her about her legacy as being one of the best women's downhill skiers in the history of the world. And she said, why just women's? And she's like, why not one of the best downhill skiers ever and i'm like you could make the case with her for sure so uh doing you so to speak as
Starting point is 00:03:29 we're talking about today's an example of authenticity what do you mean by that yeah so what i mean by that and what simone i think is a great example of like blazing her own trail and she's doing her so what i mean by authenticity it's really a practice it's not something we have or that we don't have it's really the choice to be us. And that's what today is all about, like doing you. And when we practice authenticity, we choose to make a decision to be us, to be real and trying to be instead of trying to be someone we're not or somebody else. And, you know, Simone is an example of doing her. She's doing her own moves. She's her own person. And you can tell she doesn't compare herself to anyone else by the way she performs and
Starting point is 00:04:05 by her confidence, by what she looks like, what she's paying attention to. Why is that important for us to do? Yeah, you know, I think in athletics, it's a foundation of performance when you're really just showing up as yourself and you're doing you. But in life, it's a foundation, too, because when we're purposely ourselves, we have more happiness and gratitude and joy and we let go of any barriers that get in our way. We're less likely to experience like anxiety or blame or depression, things that don't allow us to be successful in business. And you think about like
Starting point is 00:04:36 even in business, people connect with you when you're real, right? And when you're not real, they can't. There's like this barrier. And I think about people like Oprah Winfrey and Jimmy Fallon. They are people who I think really embrace authenticity or truly themselves. Maybe you can think of other people like that or just the listeners can. But I think what we do is celebrate those people who are authentic and themselves. But it's really hard for us to be that sometimes. I feel like people are drawn to people like that as well. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:05:07 It's just something for, but it's so tough for many people to do, to show up as yourself. I don't, it doesn't matter what you think. Yeah. I have one of my children is very much like, I don't care what anybody thinks. This is who I am. Yeah, that's awesome. And it's just really cool to watch. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:05:20 But why is it so tough for us grownups to do? It is. I think it's tough because sometimes we're worried too much about what other people will think. And I like this quote by E.E. Cummings who said, you know, to be nobody but yourself in a world which is doing its best night and day to make you everybody but yourself means to fight the hardest battle which any human can fight and never stop fighting. And what that quote is really suggesting is like, it is a battle to show up as ourselves in this world that is trying to conform us to other people. And, you know, I think it is a fight to be ourselves. And it can sometimes be scary to like celebrate our own uniqueness. And those that don't get it, like, do you have a strategy, something we can work on?
Starting point is 00:06:02 Yeah. So what I would suggest is just right now, as you're listening, think about what it means to show up a hundred percent as yourself or like a hundred percent authenticity guaranteed, right? Like a guaranteed, like a stamp, you know, just think about what that means for you. And today, just today, notice yourself when you're not yourself and bring yourself back to noticing what's kind of getting in your way. What are the barriers and work to remove those barriers so you can really be yourself. Because, you know, we all have unique gifts and strengths.
Starting point is 00:06:33 And when we aren't ourselves, we hide those strengths. That's frustrating for other people, too, because I know that for myself, I really appreciate people where, you know, other people might go, boy, they're really outspoken or whatever. But you always know how that person feels. Yeah, absolutely. And I appreciate that. Yeah. And I am drawn, like you said, I'm drawn to people who just show up as themselves and really authentic. They just bring a different kind of energy.
Starting point is 00:06:56 100% grade A, USDA choice, authentic you. Nice. I like it. I like it. How do we summarize all of this today then in a nutshell? High performers choose to make a decision to show up as themselves and be real instead of trying to be someone else or someone they're not. They consciously practice authenticity and we do this you're going to be happier more grateful and have a higher performance and when you do you
Starting point is 00:07:20 you don't worry what other people think. That's awesome. So we always wrap up with an affirmation today and something to kind of help us focus on as we get through the week together. What's the affirmation? So this is what you should say to yourself today when you notice you're not showing up as yourself. The world needs me and my gifts. I will show up as myself and let my true self be seen. I will do me. That's awesome. You do you. And I'll do me. I'll do me. Perfect. In the meantime, if we want to get in touch with you or follow along with the affirmations, what's the best way for us to do that? Best ways, you can go to my website, DrCindra, so D-R-C-I-N-D-R-A.com, and I send out a video

Starting point is 00:08:10 Good to have you in. Bright-eyed, bushy-tailed, all of that good stuff, even after a late night at U.S. Bank Stadium in a big Minnesota Vikings game. Doing her. I got the energy just going through my bones. I was going to say, if I was there, I'd probably still be just driving off the adrenaline from that night. It was an important win for the
Starting point is 00:08:25 Vikings for several reasons. And let's all just cross our fingers and hope AP's not out for too long. And we'll see what happens there.
