Hi friends. My name is Dr. Cindera Campoff, a national leader in the field of sport and performance psychology.
Every week, I'm on the local radio sharing my top tips on exactly how to develop the mindset of the world's best so you can accomplish all your dreams.
Get ready for a jammed, packed episode, focus on practical tips to help you get after your goals and step out of your comfort zone. Let's go.
It's time to check in with Cinder Campoff. Today we're talking about finding a purpose that powers.
you, Sarah, start us off with a quote.
I like this quote by Simon Sinek. He said,
Working hard for something we don't
care about, it's called stress.
But working hard for something we love is called
passion. I like that. What
are we talking about exactly today?
Well, we are digging into
a massive driver behind motivation,
grit, instinct, committed when things get
tough. And that's our why
and your purpose. And that's
really the deeper reason you wake up and
why you go after hard things.
You know, at least everyone knows
what we do and what they do, that's your job title or your position or the bullets on your
resume, but your why is something else. It's the spark. It's the fire in your belly. It's the thing
that makes you push through adversity when quitting feels easier. And when we lose connection to our
Y, that's when we burn out, we drift off course, and honestly we forget what really matters. And so
when we own our Y, which we're going to talk about today, is we feel inspired, energized, and just more
aligned to go after our own mission. So why is it, do you think so many of us struggle to stay connected
to our why? That's a great question. I think it's because so many people get obsessed with results,
you know, in sports that might be like winning games or in our career, it might be making money
or, you know, hitting performance targets. And those outcomes obviously are very exciting,
but that's not a why. You know, achievements actually can feel really empty if the purpose isn't
fueling them. And Simon Sinek, who I quoted at the beginning today, wrote a book called
Start With Why, and he teaches that most people communicate from the outside in where they think
about their what and then their how and then their why. But high performers split that script and they
think the why first and then the how and then the what because they know really what drives
them and they communicate it and they live it. And they know this from, you know, I know this
from the decades of coaching, you know, executives, elite athletes, and business owners,
that the world's best really always have a deeper sense of purpose than a paycheck or scoreboards or trophies.
So what happens to us when we truly know what our why is?
I think what truly happens to us is we attract the right people and we get support that really matters to us.
And you have more energy on the tough days.
You push through fear and setbacks because, you know, your purpose really fuels you.
And your purpose creates grit.
Purpose creates joy in the pursuit, and you know who you're serving and what matters,
you know, beyond the scoreboard, really everything changes.
So how do we go about discovering what our why is if we don't know?
Yeah, that's a great question.
I would say you can start with an exercise that I wrote in Beyond Grit called the So That Exercise.
And it really helps you, you know, dive deeper into find what truly drives you.
And so the first thing you do is you just write what you do at the top of your page.
And then you write so that on the left-hand side six times.
And each so-that takes you to one level deeper into your purpose.
So, for example, some of my so-thats are, you know, well, what I do first is, like, I speak
and I coach leaders and athletes and entrepreneurs so they can really master their mindset
and play bigger.
And one of my so-that's is to help people live more intentionally and pursue these really
huge dreams that they have.
one of my so-that's is to limit, you know, really so that there's, like, no limits
and to model, like, minimalist possibilities for my two boys, Carter and Blake.
Another one of my so-that's is to provide real practical strategies that people can use to be their best more often.
Another so-that is to elevate other women in performance psychology.
So, you know, these are a few of my so-that's, and that's my fuel.
That's my fire.
That's my why.
And you could do the same.
And honestly, post that somewhere you can see.
every day. Okay, so what does it mean to own your why?
Absolutely. The first thing you have to do is start with knowing what it is, right? But then
owning it is one step further. And owning it means to me, like communicating it, sharing with
others, letting it guide your decisions. And I would say put it somewhere that you can see
every day. Maybe your locker or a friend or your office wall or maybe even your, you know,
your phone wallpaper or in your email signature.
on your email or maybe even your grid board.
But it means telling people, you know, your teammates, your family, your friends, your clients
about your why.
And owning your why really increases your trust and strength and helps you build more
connections.
And it reminds you why the hard days are worth it.
And to add to that, I think that really when you have it and you understand it,
that if that's your job, if you're lucky enough to have that be your job, then you really
never work a day in your life.
Absolutely. Amen.
Yeah. What is our power phrase this week?
I own my why. My purpose fuels me every single day.
