Today we're talking about the confidence trap of limiting beliefs. Cinder, start off with one of your quotes. This is a quote by Michael Jordan. He said limits like fears are often just an illusion. All right, so today we're talking about another confidence trap, which is limiting beliefs.
Starting point is 00:01:33 What do you mean by limiting beliefs? I would say limiting belief is the thought you repeat so often that it starts to feel like the truth. And the tricky part is most of the time it is not the truth. You know, I learned this lesson the hard way, Lisa, when I was running cross-country in college. And my freshman sophomore year was just going really well. I was finishing among the top of my team, putting in the work, and my confidence was building. Then the summer before my junior year, I doubled down on my training. I told myself, you know, if this is the year, I wanted to become an All-American,
Starting point is 00:02:03 which is the top eight in the country. It's a huge goal. So what ended up happening? Well, when I got back to college, I started this big race in Minneapolis, right along some of the best All-Americans. And for the first part of the race, I was right in there with them. But then something interesting happened, and the doubts really crept in. And my mind kept saying things like, you don't belong here.
Starting point is 00:02:22 You're not fast enough. You're not good enough to run with them. And the more I listened to that voice, the slower I ran. Eventually, I dropped out of the race, which was really humiliating. That's really incredible. After finishing near the top the week before, just being cognizant of what you're thinking and notice how it affects your performance. Exactly.
Starting point is 00:02:42 And, you know, what's interesting is that nothing about my goodness had changed. Nothing about my preparation had changed. It's the only thing that really changed with the story in my head and my thought. And that's the power of limiting belief. They convince you that you're not enough. maybe not smart enough, not talented enough, that experience enough, or not ready enough. But most of the time, these beliefs are just doubt disguised as truth. Ms. Lindra, do we know how common this is?
Starting point is 00:03:06 It's very common. In our national research study on confidence, we found 61% of people say they struggle with limiting beliefs at least occasionally. And what we know for research on elite athletes is that focusing on pressure, expectations, or outcome can actually decrease confidence in big moments. And when you start thinking about what might go wrong, you know, instead of what's possible. that's when your performance draft. So how do we stop those limiting beliefs from taking over? The first thing you should do is start questioning those beliefs.
Starting point is 00:03:33 You know, ask yourself, is this actually true or is this just a thought that I've repeated so many times? And then shift your focus to the evidence. You know, the work you've put in, the progress you've made, the strengths that you bring, because confidence grows when you focus on what is, not what isn't. And, you know, here's another tool I use as my clients. I tell them to talk back to this inner critic. Don't let it run to show unchecked, you know, it says you're not ready. You respond with something grounded and true, like, I'm prepared for this,
Starting point is 00:03:59 or I can handle this moment, or, you know, that shift alone can really just change your state and change what you're thinking, how you're feeling. I love that you're talking back to the voice instead of just listening to it. Exactly, because, you know, the goal isn't to eliminate doubt completely. You know, that's just unrealistic. The goal is not to, you know, just really is to not believe everything you think. You know, high performer still hear doubt and they just don't listen to it and they don't let it decide their actions. And one more thing, you know, limiting beliefs tend to show up most who are restricting ourselves when we're really growing, when we're stepping into something bigger. And so if you're hearing that voice, you know, it's not a sign to pull back. Instead, it's actually a sign
Starting point is 00:04:37 that you're in the right place. You're really pushing yourself. That's a really great way to reframe it. You know, it is. And instead of asking, you know, what if I fail or what if this doesn't work or what if I'm, you know, we're more ready than I think. And those are the questions that, you know, shifts that into what's possible instead of just setting down. You know, the confidence is really built in those moments when you choose courage over comfort, you know, even if there's a little doubt in the background, that's okay. Well, that's powerful. Can you wrap it up for us today? Sure. I would say limiting beliefs shrink your potential. But when you challenge those beliefs, you know, focus on the truth, trust the work you've done. You give yourself permission to perform at your best. And I just want to say
Starting point is 00:05:16 you are enough. And the key is to believing it, acting like it, and that is important. What is the power phrase for this week. My doubts are not facts.
