Today we talk about unlocking our potential with a growth
Starting point is 00:00:35 mindset. And Cinderra, I'd like you to start us off with a quote. I like this quote by Carol Dweck and she said, becoming is better than being. So what inspired the topic today of unlocking our potential with a growth mindset? Well, Lisa, I was giving a keynote recently and I was talking about how growth mindset unlocked your potential. And here's the truth that I shared that your potential is endless, it's unlimited, but it's also up to you. And the way I define a growth mindset is this belief that your abilities like intelligence, talent, and skills aren't fixed, but they can be developed through effort and learning and grit. And this is based on the definition by Carol DeWeck. And so when people really understand that, I think everything changes. And why is that idea so powerful?
Starting point is 00:01:19 Well, I would say because the way you think about your ability determines how you show up. And if you believe you're stuck, you play small, if you believe that you can grow, then you take risks and learn and keep going. You know that research shows that people with the growth mindset are more motivated, more resilient, and ultimately, it's more, because they stay in the game longer. What gets in the way of us having that growth mindset that's so important? Well, we can all kind of slip into this fixed mindset where we don't believe we can grow and we can learn, I think especially under pressure, and we can think of, like, I'm not good enough, or, you know, I'll never figure this out and we forget that we're just not there yet.
Starting point is 00:01:57 Okay, so what's one simple way that we can shift into more of a growth mindset? Well, according to Carol Dweck, who really coined this term growth mindset, she suggests that one thing we can do is use the word yet. Instead of, for example, I can't do this. You can say, I can't do this yet. This really small shift builds your brain to be more open to learning instead of shutting down. Okay. And another way to build that growth mindset?
Starting point is 00:02:21 Another way would be to focus on your effort and your progress, not just like the outcomes. You could ask yourself, you know, how did I learn today or what did I learn today? Or how did I get better today? Because gross mindset people, they'll just taste revolve. They really taste improvement. Oh, I like that one, chasing improvement. Now, you did mention being, like having our potential be unlimited. How do we actually tap into that?
Starting point is 00:02:45 That's a great question. I would say despite taking action and even especially when it's uncomfortable, because we know that gross happens outside your comfort zone. And it happens when you stretch, when you fail, when you try and you try again. And so instead of asking you, how can I do this? You could even just ask yourself, like, how can I grow through this? And how do we catch ourselves when we, like, slip into that fixed mindset that's not helping us? I would say when you catch yourself, it's a great question because we all do that. And the key is really awareness. And you're noticing your first reaction to a challenge. And if you feel frustrated or defensive or want to avoid it, that's usually the same.
Starting point is 00:03:21 you know, a fixed mindset showing up. And you can just pause and ask yourself, you know, am I focusing on improving myself or proving myself? And that question alone just can shift you back into this gross mindset mode because improving is gross mindset, you know, proving is more of like your ego taking over. Well, Sandra, how would you summarize today for us? I would say your mindset shapes your potential. And if you believe you can grow, you'll keep learning and adapting and improving.
Starting point is 00:03:49 and just remember you're not stuck, you're just in progress. Dr. Cinder Campoff always gives us a power phrase to end our time together. What's the power phrase this time? I am not there yet, but I'm always growing and learning. All right.
