Hi, Dr. Cinder Campoff here.
Myself and my team just conducted this national research study on confidence that you have to check out.
The report which you can download at Confidencestudy.com shows research-backed ways you can grow your confidence.
What leaders do to both kill and grow confidence and how confidence is not just a personal issue, but an organizational issue.
I'm telling you, you've got to check this out.
It's a game changer.
You can find our full report at Confidencestudy.com.
It's time to check in with Cinder Campoff, and today we talk about how high performers take a little bit of a rest.
Cinder, start us off with a quote.
I like this quote, that best don't just train harder, they recover smarter.
Uh-huh.
And what exactly are we talking about today?
Well, Lisa, I want to start with the question.
So I want people to think about have you ever noticed what elite athletes do after a competition?
And most people focus on the game, maybe the race or the performance itself.
but we know that what separates the best athletes in the world is what they do afterwards.
And so, you know, Olympic athletes, schedule recovery, professional football players, spend hours on sleep,
bring you tricton, you know, cold pubs, massage.
But, you know, because they know the simple truth that if they don't grow during their performance,
right, they need to grow in their recovery.
And so yet when it comes to work in life, many of us just do the opposite.
We celebrate being busy.
We fill our open calendars.
just, you know, with lots of different things.
And then we wonder why we're exhausted and the stack is and burned out.
It is so true.
We know we often think of rest as something that we earn after we've finished everything.
Exactly.
But hyper-forward see rest differently.
They see it really as a little word.
They see it as a strategy.
In fact, one of the most important lessons I've worried as coaching executives and athletes
and leaders is that recovery isn't the opposite of performance.
It's, you know, part of the performance.
And without recovery, you know, eventually,
our focus dropped and our creativity declines and our patients disappears and really our confidence
takes a hit. So when you say recovery, what exactly do you mean? Well, most people think rest means
just taking a nap or getting more sleep, but sleep is important. But also a researcher,
her name is Dr. Sandra Dalton Smith. He teaches that there are even seven different types of
rest. And many people are trying to solve kind of the wrong problem because they don't know what type
of rest they actually need. Okay, so I'm going to have you walk me through the types of rest.
Okay, perfect. So Dr. Sandra Dalton Smith teaches that there are seven types of rest. So the first one is
physical rest, which is giving your body a chance to recover. The second is mental rest, which is quieting
the constant bots in your mind. The third is what's called sensory rest, which is taking breaks from
screens or noise or stimulation. The fourth is creative rest, which comes to, you know,
experiencing beauty and nature and inspiration. Then there's emotional rest, which is being honest
is how you really feel. Social rest, which is spending time with people who energize you instead of
drain you. And the seventh is called spiritual rest, which is connecting to something bigger than
yourself, like your purpose or your values or your faith. Oh, that's really powerful. I think a lot of
people do this where they're sleeping, but they still feel exhausted. Exactly. And they might not just
be sleep deprived, right? They might be emotionally depleted or creatively depleted or socially
depleted. And I think what I like about these seven types of rest is it helps you take a step back
to say, like, what do I really need, right? And the key is to identify what type of rest you need the most
right now. So what do elite performers do differently when it comes to that kind of recovery?
You know, because I work with some of them, I would say that they schedule it. And most people
schedule meetings or workouts or maybe dead lines, but elite performer schedule renewal. And they black out
time for recovery, just like they black out time for work. And so, for example, one executive
coach that, one executive that I coach actually scheduled what she calls like is white space
in her calendar. So there's no meetings or no agenda, just like thinking time. And so many of the
best athletes, you know, that I worked with really intentionally set recovery, you know,
routines and use techniques after competition because they know recovery doesn't just happen by accident.
All right. What is one thing that listeners can do this week? And kind of my question with
There's like, how much do we need?
How much, like, is it an hour?
Is it two hours?
How much do we need to fit into the schedule?
Great question.
So I would ask people just to think about this simple question.
What type of rest do I need most right now?
And then, you know, even if it's just scheduling 15 minutes this week to give yourself
that type of recovery, you're not because you've earned it, because your future performance
really depends on it.
All right.
How do you summarize today for us?
The highest performers aren't the people who push the hardest every day.
They're the people who understand the rhythm of performance and recovery.
And we just need to remember, rest isn't a weakness.
It's preparation.
All right.
Give us a power phrase this week.
I honor my performance by prioritizing my recovery.
I like that one.
It really hit home for me as well here at work.
