Today we're talking about how blame can keep you stuck in the past,
but responsibility gives you the power to choose what happens next.
Excellent. I know you like to give some inspirational quotes during these messages.
So what's your quote for today?
My quote is exactly that. Blame keeps you stuck in the past,
but responsibility gives you the power to choose what's next.
And how can listeners take this quote and take this message?
How can they use that today and going forward?
Well, Seth, I was working with an executive last week,
and he had a powerful aha moment about what keeps him stuck.
And he is incredibly driven and successful.
And as we were talking, I could hear the weight really just on his shoulders.
He was blaming himself for the lack of progress on this important project.
He was blaming himself actually because his daughter was struggling in college.
And there was just several other things in his life that wasn't going the way he wanted.
And as we kept talking, we realized this problem that he was taking blame for almost like everything.
And Seth, you know, you could almost see kind of the shift happened when he realized it.
He said something like, you know, I think I've been blaming myself because I thought that that was the responsible thing to do.
And that's what we're going to be talking about today, the difference between blame and responsibility.
and I'm excited to share it with everyone.
Excellent.
So what is the difference between blame and responsibility?
Well, blame is about the past, where responsibility is about the future.
And blame asks you, you know, whose fault is this?
Where responsibility asks, what can I choose to do next?
Blame really keeps us stuck, but responsibility moves us forward.
And blame can actually go in two directions.
We can blame other people like our boss or our coworkers or our spouse or
in sports like the referee, right? But we can also blame inwards where, you know, we think
to ourselves like, I should have done this or I should have seen this coming or this is all my
fault. Yeah. And this is this is one that I'm sure is really prevalent. You know, as you mentioned,
during jobs or or promotions, there is a lot of potential opportunities where we are really
trying hard for something. And if we if we don't get it, I think the standard response is just,
to kind of look inward and blame ourselves.
Exactly.
Whereas responsibility is really asking, like, what is mine to own?
And I think that's a really completely different question.
For the executive I was coaching, you know,
he couldn't control every decision being made on the project.
But he could get clear on his expectations,
you know, how to have a difficult conversation with the people that he leads.
He could decide on the next action he needed to take.
And he couldn't control everything with this daughter, right,
that she was experiencing.
He couldn't solve everything for her,
but he could listen.
And that's responsibility.
It's not taking ownership of everything,
but it's taking ownership of your part.
I love that.
Taking ownership of your part of a situation.
It's so crucial because then you don't end up,
you know,
then you don't end up trying to shoulder all of that yourself.
Exactly.
And it's really kind of freeing,
Seth, I would say,
because blame gives away our power,
even when we're blaming ourselves.
but responsibility helps us reclaim it.
And so when you blame, you tend to ask yourself, like, why did this happen to me?
Or why didn't I, you know, why didn't I do what they said they were going to do?
But responsibility asks us questions like, what can I learn?
What's in my control?
What conversation do I need to have?
Or my favorite is like, what's my next best step?
And those questions direct our attention.
And wherever our attention goes, that's where energy flows.
I know you like to finish these every week, Syndrome, with a power phrase.
So taking this information and just this general theme of responsibility versus blame,
what is a power phrase for today?
I release blame.
I own my part and I choose my next best step because your mind is always listening, Seth,
and so you've got to speak to yourself with confidence.
Yeah, that inner dialogue and steering that inner dialogue in positive directions is
such a crucial piece of the puzzle.
Absolutely.
