High Performance Mindset | Learn from World-Class Leaders, Consultants, Athletes & Coaches about Mindset - 778: Your Performance Is Not Your Identity with Quinn Harwood

Episode Date: September 21, 2026

What happens when your performance becomes tied to your identity? Coach Quinn Harwood knows that struggle firsthand. After a professional basketball career marked by injuries, setbacks, and broken goa...ls, Quinn learned that his performance could not be the foundation of his self-worth. Today, he helps leaders and professionals navigate personal growth, limiting beliefs, fear, and the pressure to constantly perform. In this episode, Quinn and Cindra talk about why separating your identity from your performance matters, how to recognize the beliefs that keep you stuck, and what it really means to create a growth mindset. Quinn also shares his Midnight Mirror practice, a simple end-of-day reflection built around four questions: What am I most proud of? What do I need to resolve? What do I need to reframe? What do I need to release? They also explore why "fear hates light," how exposing your fears can take away their power, and how leaders can create environments where people are encouraged to grow. If you've been feeling stuck, questioning your direction, or struggling with fear and self-doubt, this conversation offers practical ways to start moving forward. In this episode: Why your performance shouldn't define your identity How to create identity anchors that remain steady when performance changes The six growth zones Quinn uses in personal growth and leadership The Midnight Mirror practice for reflection and self-management How to identify and expose the fears holding you back Fixed mindset vs. growth mindset Why falling in love with the "voice of growth" can change how you approach personal development How leaders can use coaching to help people grow and perform at their best   Quinn's website: https://coachqharwood.com/ Mentally Strong Institute: https://mentallystronginstitute.com/ Request a Free Mental Breakthrough Call: https://freementalbreakthroughcall.com/ Download the National Confidence Research Study: https://confidencestudy.com/ Order Cindra's new Book: https://www.confidencetools.com/

Starting point is 00:00:00 Welcome to the high performance mindset podcast. I'm so excited today to welcome Coach Quinn Harwood. Coach Harwood is a leader, a mentor, and a coach who is passionate about helping people grow into the best versions of themselves. He's also the author of Growth Time. I got his book right here, which is really exciting. A book focused on the power of consistent development and intentional habits that help individuals and teams improve over time. And his message is a powerful reminder that growth doesn't happen by accident. it happens through daily commitment, reflection, and action.
Starting point is 00:00:33 So Coach Quinn, I'm so excited to have you join today, and we're going to be talking about leadership, mindset, personal growth, and really how to help people maximize their potential. So Coach Quinn, why should people listen to us today and keep on, you know, being inspired by our conversation? Yes, Sandra, I think I'm going to change the world today. So if you're listening, you're in for change, you're in for a transition. And if it doesn't challenge you, it won't change you. And if you're not being changed, you'll never have the power of transformation working in your life. So hold on. We're going to have a good time today.
Starting point is 00:01:05 I'm so thankful to be with you and your audience. And let's make a difference in someone's life today. All right. Let's do it. So Quinn, I have a question for you about coaching. And I'm just kind of curious, like tell us a bit about your journey into coaching and what originally drew you into leadership and performance development in general. Well, it always starts with the individual. So it started with my own kind of personal growth story.
Starting point is 00:01:28 You know, getting out in college, playing professional basketball a few years, went through some painful lessons. I went through some challenges with injuries and broken dreams and broken goals. And in that, I found out that I needed some personal growth in my 20s. And so what I found is growing through my personal growth journey in life and how to navigate myself, my identity, my limiting beliefs. And as I overcome them and got victory, I said, wow, I can. actually sow this thoughts in other people's lives and I can help make a difference in the people
Starting point is 00:02:00 around me and so I started doing that with the people I've worked with people I let I was involved at that point in my life and I got involved in ministry ways that built people up in life and then the transition happened in a corporate world I got very much into falling in love with leadership and so I fell in love with leadership not as it ends but the means to the end and that was going to change and impact people and drive performance so following with love with leadership and as you know syndrome you go through all all these leadership lessons, these leadership stories, and you take some bumps and bruises. Well, out of that was really kind of birth, a natural aptitude to get people to grow. You know, people over profits.
Starting point is 00:02:36 People growth equals profits. And so that was part of my growth story, but was really got me into coaching syndrome as a profession, was COVID. So COVID was a transition. And to be real candid with your audience, because I'm sure someone out there is dealing with pain and struggle, as I went through the COVID crisis. crisis and I was a casualty in my personal life. Unfortunately, I went through the most painful, for me, a horrific challenge and I was going through a breakup of the family and the marriage, and that was horrendous. And it was grief-stricken. And then addition to that, the 17-year corporate
Starting point is 00:03:11 career I went through was basically put on ice. COVID happened. Things slowed down, BK for the group I worked for, and my mid-s senior level position was eliminated with the phone call. And in that crisis in that crisis syndrome um i began to i worked with a coach and i worked with what i call the great growth coach you know for me that's my faith driven fund name for god uh and i work with that growth coach and in that the vision for getting in the life coaching and leadership coaching was birth and it fit everything i was passionate about i kind of viewed this as the mission driven movement that i was going to navigate to help what i call my my zillidial people syndrome uh those people that are in the millennial generation, Gen C, millennials. I'm that Gen X or so. You always want to pour it to
Starting point is 00:03:57 the next generation. So I think it was awakened in that. And I just love it. Been into five years. I love the impact it makes. So coaching is a powerful tool. Yeah, absolutely. That's interesting because, you know, I've been doing performance psychology work for about 20 years, but it was actually, well, mostly kind of starting working with teams and athletes at the beginning. And then COVID was the reason I got certified in IC. because I had all this extra time and I was like, you know, I want to keep growing and learning. So it's interesting that kind of our journeys are similar to that in terms of during COVID. Tell us, you know, about your journey as a professional basketball player.
Starting point is 00:04:36 And I'm curious, like, what did you feel like was the most important mindset skill or tool that you had to use to be successful in that space? Yeah, the professional basketball journey was one. I played at Davis in college. people know that by step curry so i know you got out exactly place yes step curry you uh but play college basketball i thought i could drafted i didn't uh but i had tryouts afterward i played with the lakers had a chance to play with like people like Kobe bright which was a lot of fun and going through those the cycles i didn't make the NBA and so after my first year um i actually had an opportunity signed a contract with the clippers went to the clippers uh i thought it was there thought the future was
Starting point is 00:05:18 could be set and then I blew up my ankle. And then I went through adversity with that. Came back to the minor leagues, blew out my knees. Then came back, went to the Philippines, another injury. So there was a lot of adversity, which even your listeners are facing today. It's a basketball journey, but they're facing adversity on trying to achieve a goal or a dream. At that point in my life, what I really learned was that I could not be driven by my performance. if I was my performance, if I own my performance as me and my self-worth, my life was an absolute crap show. It was a roller coaster. If things went well, I felt good. If they didn't, I didn't. And it was a bad cycle. I could never show up my best each day because I was driven by a performance
Starting point is 00:06:06 mindset, which is kind of counterintuitive because what we coach a lot to is how to have a performance mindset. So having that was a struggle for me. Not that I didn't want to go out perform, but performance couldn't be my identity. So with that, I learned that. I learned that really what the power of you is about. And the power of you is being clear on your beliefs, your values, your mission. And then also, for me, at least, my fake driven perspective, not just how I saw myself, but how my higher power, how God in my terms, saw me. And it led to self-improvement and God improvement. So if you're in that space and it's speaking to you today, it's about getting clear on who you are and your identity outside of how well you're performing. And that's a struggle for athletes, for the business
Starting point is 00:06:52 leaders I coach, it's a definite route that continues to weave through people's lives that just has to be broken and destroyed. It could be fair. Yeah. And I, you know, I think of my own self when I was in high school and college. I did not become a professional athlete, but I over-identified in my sport for sure. And what happened is the same kind of thing when I would do terrible. I felt terrible, you know, and I wasn't able to really separate that. When you're working with people, how do you, you know, how do you help people separate that identity from their performance? Because I think it can be, it can be something people really struggle with. It's an internal body. And so the way you help coach through it is basically get clear that this is a growth gap.
Starting point is 00:07:40 There's a growth gap that exists. And once you can be aware of where that growth gap is and you can be aware of it, then you can make progress and take actions out of it. So the fundamental thing you end up coaching people through as awareness that it exists and the grip it may have on their day-to-day life and how it's actually negatively impacting it. Then they're willing to open to shift their beliefs of their mindset. And that's where the journey starts is awareness and getting clarity on that they exist. breaking through that also gets what I call identity anchors.
Starting point is 00:08:13 So the power of you, which I coached you quite a bit, is getting clear on what these are identity anchors you can hold onto that don't shift with your performance. And that's what you're coached to. Yeah, that's awesome. Identity anchors that don't shift with your performance. What would be some of those for you or the people that you work with? I would say it took me a little further to get to this. But I was a fan of Simon Sinek for years. and probably 20, 22 years ago, I got clear on my why, like what was intrinsically motivating me.
Starting point is 00:08:45 And I went through about a six to eight week process where I really worked on what I call power words to craft a mission-focused statement that was so intrinsic, so true, and so meaningful for the core of my being. It wasn't just scratched out in a day. You don't get results physically training in a day. You don't get clarity in your deady anchors in a day. It just doesn't work like that. process. So I came up with a really mission-driven focus. And mine was to grow and develop leaders' lives through impactful coaching, training, and education. That becomes an identity anchor. When I'm waking up and I'm not feeling it. When I'm struggling with issues, when I've got
Starting point is 00:09:26 all these things pressing in on me, when you feel like you're not measuring up, I can go back to to that as an identity anchor and say, no, my higher calling, my bigger purpose is to be focused on this anchor and it frees you up. It empowers you. Yeah. You tend not to drift in your mind and your emotions because you've got this anchor. So that's one. Yeah. And I highly encourage when I coach people through this, the aha moments, the transformational space, then how they ingrained that thought process that mindset into their life behavior. It really transforms the way the approach each day. And that's just one identity anchor. You should coach through six of them in the power of you, which is a concept in growth time, but it's just one of them, but it's powerful.
Starting point is 00:10:10 Yeah, that's so helpful. I think people can relate to what you, what you're saying is, you know, it can be easy to connect your performance to your identity. So I'm curious about your book growth time. And I'd like you just to start with us, just kind of describing to us like what growth time actually means to you. Well, like I like to say to people, there's a lot of seasons that like we go through, but if we get the mindset, what time is it, it's always growth time, baby. And so what growth time means to me is getting into hearing the voice of growth and how that's going to shift and change our behaviors so that we can live our best life.
Starting point is 00:10:50 Growth time itself as a book is about a clear path, a personal, professional growth. It's called the clear path to unlock your best life and leadership. So getting into the growth type journey is really taking people through. the fundamental growth zones, three in life and three in leadership. And they're really birthed out of challenging periods. I almost call them like life quakes or leadership quakes that we go through, that out of those during a 20-year period, it helped me establish where those growth grabs were in my life and that I was able to communicate them in a clear path. And the greatest joy for me is, if it works for you, Cindra, it's good. If it works for me, it's good. But it's only
Starting point is 00:11:32 irrelevant when it impacts others. And so what I've seen is over the last five years coaching people through this pathway, when I've seen people, career advancement, reduce mental stress, like a vitality or energy for life again, matching their money with their mission. When you see these things come from coaching people through this mountain of personal professional growth, it's a game changer. Yeah, absolutely. Well, I read about them in the book, but I'd like for you to share with us, for those people who haven't read your book, What are the three in life and three in leadership? Sure.
Starting point is 00:12:05 Just from a framework that the three in life that we have to navigate you through. And I would say it's written primarily for zillinials, but I coach people that are in the 40s and 50s who've bypassed these growth zones. And I have to go back to these growth zones to really stabilize them so that they can move forward out of the stuck places of their life. But in life, it really focuses on the power of you as one specific growth zone. and there's growth gaps that need to be addressed than that. The second is the power of your beliefs.
Starting point is 00:12:36 And that really focuses on this enemy, this war, this internal battle between our belief system and limiting beliefs and empowering beliefs and how we operate. The third one, which was born out of a lot of crisis in my late 20s, early 30s, is called the power of personal liberty. And really the crux of that is a freedom that we can gain inside to overcome what I call this hypocrite monster, this desire that we work in war against ourselves,
Starting point is 00:13:04 and how you self-manage yourself to success. And that was burned through going through a failed business and losing everything as an early-season entrepreneur, to going through some challenges and relationships, to corporate challenge. It was all built into, okay, how do I still show up and really show up, even when things just hit the fan in life?
Starting point is 00:13:25 So coaching through those hold a lot of power. And then I look through leadership because our generation that we're trying to raise up, it's really sometimes almost like a broken home father's generation. And to be successful, they have to be strong in life, but then they have to be strong in how they lead. And it's the precept that everyone's called to lead. So those are listening, you've got to get strong in life and leadership. And then the three growth stones of leadership deal with power to the people. Empower to the people is really about the principles and the mindsets that actually help people grow people.
Starting point is 00:14:01 And so you deal with empowerment, you deal with ownership, and you deal with the mindsets behind them. Then you look at the power of performance. And this took me probably 40-something years of my life. I think when we think of performance, and I know people have their models. I love what you mentioned about the 10 to 10 things of grit to be high performers. We have to have a model to know that how to really drive performance. Well, the power of performance is about really taking a wheel. And in the wheel, you have people.
Starting point is 00:14:29 And another spoke of the wheel is process. Another spoke of the wheel is productivity. And the clearer you are in that wheel, the faster it goes, the more you drive performance. So it's really about that under the umbrella of how to be a coach leader. So I'm sure you've got much into that syndrome, right? The idea of leadership and coach leadership as a style of leadership, you know, six styles of leadership. Daniel Goldman, very powerful resource. But getting into that is like, and Google did a phenomenal study.
Starting point is 00:15:00 Maybe you're aware of it, like Project Oxygen. And that was a 10-year exhaustive study of what people want in the workforce and what they wanted a manager. And the number one skill they wanted was they coached as a leader. So the power performance takes, they'll look up, hey, how is a coach leader really interact to drive performance? And then really, you know, the sixth growth zone we coached through is the power of vision. and getting clear 2020 vision when you're bringing groups or teams together.
Starting point is 00:15:28 And so a lot of getting clear vision is about what I call having a phrase that pays or a moniker or a team unity cry and then really getting focused on a clear communication and action items and how you don't do it yourself, but how you bring a team together to align on it. And that's called visionary leadership. So those are kind of the things that they each have their painful growth story challenge that I went through. And I've seen them just powerful process through health, business owners, people looking for career advancements, people kind of wrestling what their mission or vision is at life, all groups in that salineal space have seen just a powerful resource for that. Excellent. Well, thank you for outlining that. I think that's really helpful for people. Hi, my friends, Dr. Sindra here. And I'm so excited to announce that my new book published by Simon Schuster is now available titled The Confidence Habit.
Starting point is 00:16:22 Our national research study on confidence showed there is a confidence crisis in America today. One in two Gen Zers and young millennials feel like they are not enough. Women still scored lower on all markers of confidence compared to men. And this book provides the tangible research-backed strategies to grow your confidence, and I can't wait for you to read it. You can head over to Confidence Tools.com to purchase your copy, where there's over $594 of bonuses over there. Again, check it out at ConfidenceTools.com, and I can't wait to hear what to think about it.
Starting point is 00:16:56 And I caught something that you said that I want to learn more about. When you said, like, we work in a war with ourselves, and it's so important to self-manage our own selves, which is very difficult. So in your own words, what does that mean that we live in war with ourselves? It's an eternal conflict that we have. And if we look at our belief systems, there's a very own words. a predominant belief systems and limiting beliefs that exist. They're common humanity. And I really became clear on this when I was basically knocked out of performance in sports and athletics for about a year and a half. And I went through a very challenging time physically with my back. And it was a period of
Starting point is 00:17:39 time in my life where I was almost like an invalid, unable to do much because of generation and disc issues in my back. And I realized what was that war was my beliefs. And fear, self-doubt, self-reliance were so prevalent that they destroy you. They prevent joy from coming forward. Fear, anxiety, depression, stress. So how you get to choose what you believe and the way you're going to believe is really powerful. So for me, getting clarity on that was a game changer. And it doesn't go away, Sandra. I'm still going to face this choice of limiting beliefs every day. So will you. How do we deal with fear, self-doubt? How do we deal with trying to be self-reliant and do it on our own? And self-managing syndrome, that was an interesting one, because
Starting point is 00:18:33 how do you self-manage yourself to success? I mean, you're going to find out with rhythms and routines and people say, hey, here's this habit. Love James Clear, atomic habits, and here's how you build consistency. Here's the discipline, Janine. I looked at it holistically, which is probably a little you need. But I looked at how do you grow yourself in three areas? So basketball players, you'll love this. We're 3D. We shoot three-pointers. We just score, right? But we're three-dimensional as people. We have a body, soul, and a spirit. And within our soul, we have our mind, will, and emotions. So if there's not a growth plan in each part of those areas, you're going to stay stagnant, you're going to stay stuck. You're not going to be able to self-manage you to be who you are,
Starting point is 00:19:17 who you're intended to be. So having growth plans spiritually, having growth plans for your soul and for your body physically, all are part of helping you show up and overcome this battle that we're wresting with. Yeah. And I think about how we all have this negativity bias, right? We all have this, like, voice inside our head that's telling us we're not enough or, you know, uh, uh, you know, like, uh, we need to do more, right? And I appreciate you just like, um, being open and honest about that because I think everyone can everyone notices the limiting beliefs that they have well let me not everybody but we should right and what what would advice would you give to people who are saying yeah okay I need to recognize my limiting beliefs more often or I need to
Starting point is 00:20:04 get unstuck more often where do you think they should start? Barb is like a habit would go I think what kind of what we can create is I call it the midnight mirror. The midnight mirror is really where the day ends and the next day begins. And that nighttime where you're tired, your fatigue, is easy just to scroll to just check out is the intentional spot of saying, okay, let me look at myself in the mirror. Let me do some reflection. And immediately most people went to, oh crap, I don't want to do that.
Starting point is 00:20:36 It was a rough day. The reflection is start with what you found beautiful about you during that day. what were you most proud of during that day? It's probably the single most hardest question, Cinder, that I asked like professionals. Hey, what are you most proud of this past week that you exemplify and they struggle with it? Being hard to be proud of something they've done,
Starting point is 00:21:01 whether it's their values. So start with that. What I coach through what I've experienced or what I do personally too is then I go through reflection time. When I look at how do I maybe, resolve things that I didn't feel whole with within myself or my work or my effort that day. So I've got to resolve some things and I've got to put some pieces together.
Starting point is 00:21:24 Then I'll work to reframe how I view that day. And the midnight mirror is about reframing our mindset. So it takes intentionality, but there's some bad, like, funky mindsets we just grab onto it, right? And if we don't deal with them on a daily basis, they latch onto us. they almost become these strongholds. So refraining those, some people I've had that I coach, they'll write them out. They'll write them out like how they feel, how they thought, what different framework could they think of how that day went.
Starting point is 00:21:56 Then the hardest part we do as human beings, I think is we got to release. We've got to let go of crap. I know. We've got to let go. We just got to release. We got to let go. We got to forgive. We got to forgive ourselves.
Starting point is 00:22:12 We've got to release our frustrations. We've got to have a release point. We're not meant to carry all the weight and burdens that we tend to hold on to his people. Once that midnight mirror is there, then you can start envisioning the next day. And you can start envisioning what that next day is going to look like. And you don't carry things from one day the next. You may have to resolve stuff the next day. You may look in the mirror and be like, dang, I was a jerk to that person.
Starting point is 00:22:39 And you may have to now go get it right. but at least as a starting point of how you start to self-manage and become successful day to day. I really like that midnight mirror. So what are you most proud of? How do you need to resolve, right? Is that the second question? Number three, what do I need to reframe and like what do I need to release? And I like the idea of reframing because, you know, everything is like the meaning that you give it.
Starting point is 00:23:05 But most people don't intentionally create a meaning based on hard things. they just let their brain go to default, which isn't always what serves us or what, you know, really is what is helping us. It's mostly by our default or what we're used to. So I really like that. I encourage everyone who's listening to write that out or do you suggest us going through it in your mind or what's the best way to move forward with a midnight mirror? Like fitness. Like if you've got, if you don't have a good fitness routine, start writing it out and start getting your butt and working through it. Same thing in our mindset or our person, of growth, start writing it out. And what will happen is once you get repetitions with it,
Starting point is 00:23:44 six months from now, eight months from now, it becomes intuitive and you're just going through it as a checkpoint. You don't need to actually maybe write it out. But most people I start coaching or work through, start with your pen and your paper. Get it out of here, get it out of your heart, and get it out of the paper and move forward. Quinn, I know that people are listening and they're there, you know, they heard you talk about limiting beliefs and they're like, oh yeah, I do experience fear that holds us back or holds me back. So when you're thinking about coaching people through fear or self-doubt, which is one of the inner limits or two of the inner limits I see, really gets in the way of people's potential. How might you go about doing that?
Starting point is 00:24:23 What I've experienced in the moments when I've been most afraid in life, when I've had the most uncertainty when things weren't clear. I went to a process, and I went through this when I went through a failed entrepreneurship that basically went through a business model partnership that just crashed. So if you're an entrepreneur, it's not always the first time that you succeed, right? It's been my second. But the first time it was a failure. But what I have to come to grips with and what people have to do is what's the exact nature of the fear? And it's about a exposure. Fear hates light. Fear hates light. Once it's a exposed, it starts to lose its power. The exposure part, what am I really afraid of? And that could take a
Starting point is 00:25:14 little while to peel back for people. I was coaching a business owner recently and very strong will determined, aggressive, like, man, she was great in operating. And she was having a hard decision about making an employee decision. Someone who basically was like a ship sinker, an energy vampire. They need to be removed, but they brought a lot of revenue. And when it came down to it, she finally had to come to this moniker that, I'm afraid. I'm afraid if I let go, what may happen, what the repercussion would be, how people respond. And for her, she just sat back and she said, oh, my gosh, I never thought I'd ever be afraid of something like this, but I am afraid. So for a strong will determined person to come to that conclusion.
Starting point is 00:26:06 You know, it's like the old, if you're an old school person, you like Rocky trade, Adrian goes, we have everything about the truth. What are you so afraid of Rocky? I've just seen that clip on my threat, so I got to throw it in there. That's awesome. Once you get that fear component and its exposure, then you can deal with it. But if it's a fear of failure, a feel of rejection, I feel of not having enough, I feel of losing all your money, whatever that fear is until it's fully exposed in your
Starting point is 00:26:30 confront and you're confronting and speaking it out, it still has power. Once it's exposed, then you have more the choice to say, okay, what am I going to do with this now? I love that idea of fear hates this light because I think you're right. It's like when we really talk about it. And most of the time we're not even aware of our fear and the way it holds us back. But awareness of how it's holding our back is the first step. Quinn, what have I not asked you today that you want to share because I know that you probably were having some things in your head that it's like, oh, I really want to share this today on the high performance mindset. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:27:08 When it comes to performance, I think what holds people back from growth and a lot of intentional growth because I think it's worth talking about. People tend to view growth and they hear those words and they think work, effort, intentionality. And that's true. But I think what really holds them back is they haven't fallen in love with them. voice of growth. Cool. Love conquers all.
Starting point is 00:27:34 Love cast out all fear. And falling in love with the voice of growth doesn't make it laborsome. It doesn't make it hard. It doesn't make it seem like I'm trying to fix something or get through something or it's always something about me or it's always this self-worth doubt. It's about falling in love with the voice of growth. And what that takes is people though. And if you're listening, it's the hardest part.
Starting point is 00:27:59 It's letting go of your pride. It's letting go of your ego. It's finding a safe spot where all kind of growth, communication, relational, professional, growth. And I'm open to the voice of growth. That's a game changer for people. What do you think that people can do if it's a habit or a practice that they can use just to create more growth in their lives?
Starting point is 00:28:23 Okay, it's kind of interesting. I walked this through a client recently. They've been coaching for a while, but it's kind of interesting how much people fall into a fixed mindset versus a growth mindset. And so Carol DeWeck did some great research on that if you haven't checked it out. But really having them list and having good clarity what a fixed mindset is, what a growth mindset is, and having them do like a nightly or daily review of it, because we can't see growth or we can't see gains unless we put in a visibility or an awareness.
