one practice one get gritty the world's best to know what they want and they know why they want
it in the face of adversity and setbacks, they go after their
goals with deep commitment. Chapter one, grit over gift. Quote, if you want to be the best,
you have to do things other people aren't willing to do. End quote. Michael Phelps.
An Under Armour commercial titled Rule Yourself demonstrates the physical sacrifices that Olympian Michael Phelps made in
order to compete in Rio in 2016. Phelps does not speak in the commercial. Instead, you see him
swimming alone, training hardcore in the weight room, carbo-loading and undergoing cupping therapy
and ice baths. You see him swimming repeats with a parachute dragging through the water behind him.
You witness his frustration as he slams his fists in the water after a repeat that doesn't reach his personal standard.
The commercial documents his journey to the Olympics without ever showing the destination.
It shows the process, the sacrifices and struggles, the relentless commitment to sculpting and taking care of his body.
A tagline appears at the end of the commercial, quote,
It is what you do in the dark that puts you in the light.
Rule yourself, end quote.
I love the rule yourself tagline.
To me, it reinforces the importance of taking control and responsibility for your destiny.
Phelps, a 23-time Olympic world champion and the most declarated Olympian of all time,
was not born the world's greatest swimmer. Instead, he developed himself into the world's
greatest swimmer. Legacies like Phelps are built over a lifetime of sacrifices, commitment,
and grit. Your legacy can be built over a lifetime of the same. I first started deeply thinking and studying grit after watching Dr. Angela Duckworth's
TED Talk several years ago.
She defines grit as having passion and perseverance towards your very long-term goals.
It got me thinking about the successful athletes, leaders, and entrepreneurs that I work with
and how I see them develop grit over time.
The leaders I see kill it know their goals,
know why they are pursuing their goals, and they keep going despite setbacks and adversity.
Without understanding why you want to achieve your goals, it is almost impossible to stay devoted in
your pursuit. Being gritty means you do not give up. You don't switch gears when you get bored or
tired. Your drive keeps you focused on your goals.
You keep going despite setbacks, failures, or difficulties. When you are gritty,
you have the inner strength and motivation to keep going when it's difficult. You go the extra
mile because you know it will make a difference. You stay focused on your goals. To me, grit is
knowing your long-term goals, knowing why you are pursuing them, and sticking with your goals. To me, grit is knowing your long-term goals, knowing why you are pursuing
them and sticking with your goals despite adversity and setbacks. If you think about
who you most admire, I guarantee that person had grit. Michael Phelps is a great example of someone
with grit, but there are many other powerful examples too. Steve Jobs had the goal of getting
a computer in the hands of everyday people.
Steph Curry had a goal of being the best player in the NBA.
And Sarah Blakely wanted to help women feel great about themselves and their potential as she developed her company Spanx.
I had the goal of working with my dream team.
It took me over 30 connections before it became reality.
The connections included calls, emails, meetings, and networking.
I stayed gritty.
If you want to play bigger, grow your business, or serve more people,
get clear on your destination and then prepare to fight.
And keep fighting against the tide.
Grit applies to all areas of our lives.
Our careers, our sport performance, our education, our relationships, and our happiness.
When we are gritty, we are happier.
Working towards our goals and dreams provides satisfaction. In a study published in 2014 in
Frontiers in Psychology, Dr. Duckworth and her colleagues worked to predict retention in four
places, the military, workplace sales, high school, and marriage. They found that grittier soldiers
were more likely to finish a grueling army section They found that grittier soldiers were more likely to
finish a grueling army section course. Grittier sales employees were more likely to keep their
jobs. Grittier high school students were more likely to graduate. Grittier men were more likely
to remain in their marriage. Grit has also been connected to sport performance. My colleague Jeff
Martin, along with his research team, found that athletes with the highest level of grit and resilience
have the most engagement in their sport.
More engagement means more heart, passion, energy, and enthusiasm
for what you're doing and those you are around.
Grit, knowing your long-term goals, knowing why you're pursuing them,
and sticking with them, creates success over and beyond talent.
It is a key part of the high
performance mindset. When you have two people with equal talent, the grittier person performs better.
If you have grit, you'll have more energy, an energy that will sustain you for over years and
even decades. Grit is why leaders can work over the long stretches before seeing any results and
not throwing in the towel, or why an athlete can train decades for a single competition and not change directions. Grit isn't just innate, it can
be developed. Although the assumption is that grit is something you are born with, the truth is that
grit can be developed. It takes time. If you know your long-term goals and keep them as your focus,
the easier it will be to continue taking the steps necessary to get you where you want to go.
Success is about sustained performance.
The world's best know this.
To be great, they choose to work hard every day.
They analyze their playbooks on the weekend and they study performances of professionals they want to emulate.
They go the extra mile over and over.
Exercise. Get ready to make a grit board.
To help you get gritty and develop the high performance mindset, develop a grit board. All you need to get started is an 11 by 17 poster board. Keep it handy as you listen as you'll use
this board to record things from each practice in this book. When your grit board is complete, you can frame it and hang
it in your home, office, or locker room. My grit board is posted right above my computer. It was
in my view as I wrote this book. You can find instructions and examples of grit boards at
beyondgrit.com. My high performance game plan grit over gift. Number one, I choose to raise my game to a new level at work, at practice, and with my family.
Consider what this new level looks like.
Number two, I take time to consider my gritty future.
What do I want? Really want.
Number three, in order to achieve my long-term goals, I need to make some sacrifices.
What do I need to change in my life to make it to where I want to be?
Number four, fill in the blank.
I am passionate about blank.
I need to blank so that I can achieve blank.
My high performance power phrase, I rule myself.
I am focused on my goals and I keep going despite obstacles in my way.
I am passionate about my future.
