Episode Date: October 9, 2026

The 1981 teen slasher Happy Birthday to Me has a wild twist ending that you could never predict, but Paul, Jason, and June try nonetheless to make sense out of all the bonkers plot turns leading up to... the reveal of the killer. Along the way they discuss how everyone in The Top 10 looked too similar, Ginny's inappropriate relationship with her therapist, if shish kebab is a romantic midnight snack, how Ginny has a bidet but not a toilet, and so much more. Plus, the gang debates if it's acceptable to pee in the shower. Starting point is 00:00:00 For all those daddies who like big pieces or little pieces, we saw happy birthday to me, so you know what that means. Now it's time for how did this get made. We're going to have a good time, celebrate some failure, not just be a hater, because you know you wonder, how did this campaign? Let's follow in the mediocrity of subpar art. Perhaps we'll find the answer to the question, how did this get made? Hello, people of Earth and welcome to how did this get made. Today we are talking about the 1981 Canadian slasher film. Oh, happy birthday to me.
Starting point is 00:00:37 Oh, okay. That answers a lot of question. I heard Calgary very late in the game and I was like, oh, they're all in Canada. They're in Canada. Helped a lot. That makes so much more sense now. For sure. I am Paul Shear.
Starting point is 00:00:54 That's Jason Manzukas and June Dian Rayfield. and we are going to break down a movie that even me trying to explain it offers a bigger question, which is this. I was going to say, what do you need to know about happy birthday to me? Well, it revolves around a high school senior. Is that surprising to you? I mean, okay. I didn't think that that was high school. I had a lot of questions.
Starting point is 00:01:18 I only thought it because it said Academy. They also were at a bar. Yeah, it seems like it's a boarding school, Except they all go to homes. Yeah. And the school appears to be the size of, like, University of Michigan. Like, it's jike. It looks like 20,000 people go to this school.
Starting point is 00:01:39 That is what was kind of hard to wrap my head around. And also, some of the 17-year-old boys look like they're 48. Oh, I mean, the landscaping budget alone for this academy is massive, you know. I mean, this is just a quaint little school. Well, now that I know. No, it's a Canadian school. It all makes sense. It's so much.
Starting point is 00:01:59 It's really helpful. For landscaping up there. If you want to know more about it, Virginia, that's A.K.A. Ginny recently returned to her prep school after recovering from a mysterious accident that left her with gaps in her memory. Now, Ginny is also a part of an elite click of privileged students called the top 10. I love the top 10. I love this. I can talk about the top. She, the top 10 is my first note. I was like, I love when a click has a.
Starting point is 00:02:26 name. Oh, the top 10. Well, I actually want to ask about the top 10 because is the top 10 just based on the father's wealth or are they the top 10 of their class? It seems like they are the top 10. They call themselves the top 10. It's like the top 10 coolest people. But that also falls apart when one of the coolest people looks like someone doing radar from MASH cosplay and And he is, like, working in, like, a mortuary. A group of people who would never hang out together. Never. They are like, it is like Scooby-Doo in the gang.
Starting point is 00:03:04 It's like one from each archetypal gang, you know? There's one nerd. There's one jock. There's one smarty. There's, you know, I'm like, this is strange. It's a bizarre group. Anyway, each one of the top ten begin to be murdered one by one by an unknown killer. And Virginia starts to piece together the details of our.
Starting point is 00:03:24 accident and suspects that she might be connected to the killings. That is the premise. Well, but we got so much to break in. I'm so sorry. I just interspersed throughout. Yes, you're right, Paul. That is what the movie is about. Interspersed throughout, though. This is a story about a young woman's relationship with her therapist. Oh, my goodness. David. Her therapist, David, who is the most significant relationship in this movie and is just wandering around the high school campus? Just not seeing patients outside, just walking around, checking out stuff. Everybody calls him Doc or David, as if he's like, again, the movie treats this like small town rules.
Starting point is 00:04:07 But I'm telling you, there's got to be 13,000 kids at least going to this school. Like, when they are watching the soccer game, by the way, the other thing about this movie that really got me was things play out in real time in this movie more than I am accustomed to. Yes. soccer games. I'm watching like three to four minutes of a like not a montage of soccer game. That should have been the clue that this was Canadian is that they didn't play American football
Starting point is 00:04:31 and everybody's there cheering. You know what I was also like astounded by was because it felt at first I thought we were in a New England boarding school. Yeah. And I was like oh well why are they a why are the bullies in the bar elderly people? And by the way the town bullies are old
Starting point is 00:04:51 are like the Elks Club. They are wearing outfits. They're in a prank war. Why are you fighting them? They're in a prank war with the Elks Club. It's so strange. And the Elks Club's bad behavior is singing 100 bottles of beer on the wall. I mean, I did think those men were insane, but I was like, this is really different.
Starting point is 00:05:11 Like, you don't see this in high school movies where the town bullies are the elders. Yeah. But I also, like, I found it so confusing. now Canada makes sense. Like, why in this boarding school, where I imagine them rowing? I imagine them, you know,
Starting point is 00:05:31 why are they at mountain biking competitions? The mountain biking competition doesn't make sense for Canada at all. It doesn't make sense for anywhere. Anything. It feels like they were like, we have to put, like, RAD and BMX is coming out. We need to put a
Starting point is 00:05:47 mountain biking sequence in this movie. It's just not a school sanctioned, as far as I know, Well, it's also like, did the school have to, like, recruit the French guy just to ride the bike? It seems like it. Or is he French Canadian? Is Etienne? Is Etienne? Is that why?
Starting point is 00:06:03 He did come from France. When the news report at the end, it said he was visiting from France. But is he's the son of like an ambassador or something? Yeah, that's right. That's right. So, like, it's also like these seem like important people. And I want to just be clear. The top 10, let's just, I just.
Starting point is 00:06:21 I really just don't want us to move off of it. The top 10 is like, think of it like an old-fashioned geek squad. Yes. And it's one of the first things established is that Virginia's part of the top, Burn and Dead, they're all part of the top 10. Now, does it seem like there's 10 of them? I think there's only about seven. Oh, God, that's such a good question.
Starting point is 00:06:42 One of them gets killed immediately. We have Burned Dead. And then you never see all 10 fully together. Bernardet, ATN. I have their name. The nerd with the rat. Is the rat part of the top ten? There's Hal, Estelle, Anne, Alfred, Steve, Rudy, and Aetian.
Starting point is 00:07:05 And Greg, Maggie, Amelia, these are other names. I'm looking at the cast list. Well, this is, and I don't want to be racist toward white people. I really, really don't. I'm always hyper aware of that, but they all looked the same. Oh, yes. Oh. Well, which made the ending.
Starting point is 00:07:20 couldn't pull out laggy from hands and the ending. I mean, we're just going to like, let's just talk about it. At the very end of the movie, as we've been conditioned to believe that Virginia is the killer because she has this, she's undergone this like open brain surgery that maybe, you know, has left her with, you know, like a fragmented memory, et cetera. By the way, they're doing a lot of skull surgery. They're doing a lot of them. We're not in the brain in this movie.
Starting point is 00:07:49 They're doing a lot of OBS, open brain surgery. Okay, wait. I want to get to the end, but Jason, yes. Why is she doing OBS? Why? Because I think it was a, okay, I believe that this is a psychiatric treatment. This is kind of like they were trying to help her because she went through this traumatic event to rewire her brain.
Starting point is 00:08:13 Like on some level. So it's like an electroshock treatment type of thing. Yes, but more gory. Yes. And I think they were trying to set up the fact, like, I thought, well, I have a lot of theories of what I thought. I shouldn't reveal that yet. But I feel like that was the whole thing. It was like, okay, you went through trauma.
Starting point is 00:08:28 This is the way we're going to get you out of trauma because she, at one point, the father says she hasn't moved in months. She's just sitting here writhing in this bed. He's like, don't worry. That's the brain tissue repairing itself. And then at the end of the movie, you see that really the only thing that happened was the car took a tumble off a bridge. Not that that's no great feat, but they're able to be, they're a, awake in the car. The mom said, why don't you swim away from me? And then she swims out and she's out. Like, she didn't seem to get brain injuries from that. And I think what she was maybe suppressing was,
Starting point is 00:09:02 well, I don't know. I really don't know. Because what I get, I, my other question is, did David co-sign on this open brain surgery? This seems like this is all David all the time. I was, well, that's, and the movie is really like, this is one of those movies that we do that seems as though it's giving you the the information to kind of try and piece it together, but you couldn't have any of the, like, it really takes an exposition dump at the very end of the movie. Basically, the very final scene is a series of reveals that basically explain what's been going on in the whole movie in a way that I was like, why?
Starting point is 00:09:39 But also, it's three reveals after each other that each, like, well, just do one. It would be satisfying. And space them out a little bit. Like, like, I couldn't crack. Can I ask a question? And this is going to be really, I'm going to really, like, expose myself here. But I want to be brave. Who was that woman at the end?
Starting point is 00:10:05 By the way, I'm so happy that you asked this. I am as well because I also wrote, who is this? Yes. Okay, so this is what I started. I thought it was Burgundy. This is the main killer that we're talking about. At the very end of the movie, we are seeing like we keep on eliminating suspects. Almost all the 10 is dead.
Starting point is 00:10:23 And now we reveal this thing. And when the face mask, and yes, I did say face mask comes off. And we'll get into all that. The reveal was confusing. And I had a theory. My first theory was it was the mom. Same. And I thought that too.
Starting point is 00:10:37 I thought that. Okay. So I thought it was the mom. I thought it was like a psycho situation where she is taking on the mother's point of view. She's like she's losing herself to the mother's like she's possessed by her mother's spirit almost like Norman Bates, you know, in that sense.
Starting point is 00:10:55 But that wasn't it. And then when so then when she comes in and it's double, so there's a fake out where the killer comes in. So the setup of the movie, which you find out at the very end is, the characters in the 10 were supposed to be at Virginia's birthday party some six years ago.
Starting point is 00:11:17 Right? She had a birthday party and no one has attended the birthday party. Nobody went. Like six years ago, no one went and her mother is freaking out. Well, where are they, your little friends from the Crawford Academy?
Starting point is 00:11:28 They're not coming. What? There's a party in Ann Thomerson's house. I heard them talking. Why didn't they invite you? Mom, they don't even know. Dang, little snotts. we'll show them.
Starting point is 00:11:49 If they won't come to our party, we'll go to dance. Her mother is freaking out, which leads to the chaotic and crazy driving in the rain scenes that we've been seeing, you know, chopped up throughout, and then the death scene of her mother and all of the rest. And so then we realize that, oh, all of the kids from the 10 who've been going missing all the movie are in the cottage on Virginia's property where her birthday party, from six years ago was set up to happen that never happened. The cottages still set up. The bodies are all in there. Virginia finds all the bodies. And then Virginia herself walks in a second time. So you're being told there's twin sisters here. Right, which was a giant shock. And I was like, well, this is not set up at all, but I'm willing to go with it. Same. I was like, okay, cool. Wait a second. You're saying Virginia brought those bodies in? No. No. We thought that. We thought that because this is before the face. mask reveal when she rips off the mask.
Starting point is 00:12:54 Yes. Okay. Right. When we think it's just a twin, a endymical twin. And we're like, well, yes. So then you're like, well, first you think it's Virginia. And you're like, got it. Okay, she kills her dad because this is her revenge for her dad not showing up to her birthday party. And you're like, okay, that's fulfilling. I get this. I kind of saw it. I actually did think it was the dad. But you get that. And then the Virginia walks over and picks up the head of. of who? Virginia. And you're like, wait a second. She has a twin sister. And she says, calling her sister. She says, sister. And you're like, well, okay. Well, now we know that.
Starting point is 00:13:34 And by the way, these are the very final moments of the movie. The movie, like, almost two hours have elapsed. And so they're introducing. By the way, this movie is long. It's an hour and 50 minutes. They're introducing so much stuff in these last moments that is, that then like, so then you have twin sisters. Okay. Whoa. Okay, I'm buying this. So now I'm like, okay, so the twin sister's been doing all the murder and the Virginia that I've been following has just been like going crazy from all these consequences or the perception that she feels like maybe she's doing all this murder. Then she immediately rips the mask off of the young girl. A perfect mask.
Starting point is 00:14:09 To reveal who is this. Well, this is Anne. I was like, this is Anne. And when I see it, when I see Anne, I don't remember Anne from. I remember her looking that way. To June's point, all these people look the same. I'm actually looking at a cast picture right now. I don't even know which one's Ann, and I'm looking at a picture as a fan.
Starting point is 00:14:30 And there are a couple of girls who have, like, different haircuts and could conceivably be, like, a differentiated girl that we've been following. Not Anne. No, Anne looks like Bernadette. And Virginia. You know, like. Virginia. I think Anne, it was the girl. Was Anne the girl that was swimming in the pool?
Starting point is 00:14:50 No. That was Maggie. Okay. I think. Anne was the only moment I thought, let's keep an eye on Anne. Anne might be one to watch, is when after that crazy, like, initial game they played on the bridge, when Virginia runs into the woods toward her house, the camera kind of lingers on Anne's reaction. And I thought, hmm, Anne's, something's going on with Anne. Okay.
Starting point is 00:15:17 Well, then I forgot all about her, really. Yeah, because then they take it at a real-time walk home. And again, the movie does kind of lull you into a sense of security because it is taking you. The first murder is way too long. And nobody is finding any bodies. Nobody's finding any blood. That's like, they show you.
Starting point is 00:15:36 So that gets really weird too because you're like, oh, wait, is she imagining these murders and all this blood? Because she would be covered in blood or the bedroom would be covered in blood. The guy in the bell tower who is like, let's go cut down the bed. Well, Rudy, like you're, oh, she, Rudy is dead. But then Rudy isn't dead. And they're like, oh, is she imagining all these killings? Because, but Rudy then.
Starting point is 00:16:00 Well, Rudy dies later. Later. How? Not the shish kebab. He's the, that's the other thing. That's Wayne or Steve? I think that's Steve. You know what? I have a question about that.
Starting point is 00:16:11 And I'm so sorry, and I'm sure we'll get to how did Rudy die. But when you say to someone, hey, I make a great midnight snack, Do you think that that is shish kebab? Never expecting shish kebobab. Never expecting shishababab. I have never. In high school? Never expecting shishabababab.
Starting point is 00:16:28 I never have ever seen the more disgusting thing than two kids by a fireplace eating shishababab. And the way. It's so hard to eat. Like you're in a high school makeout scenario? And she's like, let me make it spicier for you. She's like putting some sort of seasoning on it. Like she's like putting a cayenne peasant. If a girl invited me back for a midnight snack that she's saying she makes a great midnight snack in a sultry way, I'm like, oh, great, this is sexy.
Starting point is 00:16:59 We're going to hook up. And she's like, just hold on. I'm going to go make souvovokie. By the way. I'll be right back. Just got to warm up some gyros. By the way, shish kebab, not an easy thing to make. You got to cook some of the vegetables.
Starting point is 00:17:14 You got to get that meat going. I got to chop up these peppers and onions. meat and you want that meat to like marinate in its own juices and stuff in a Ziploc bag for a while. Like it is, it is a process. Hi, I'm Paul F. Tompkins. My name's Lauren Lapkis. And I'm Scott Ackerman and we're from the show, Freedom. It's a show where three friends get together.
Starting point is 00:17:38 We laugh, we talk about our lives and we have fun playing games. It's really just that simple. There's not a lot to it. Tell you everything we've ever done in our whole entire lives. you'll hear every story that we have. Twice, at least. The New season's out now, and you can get it wherever you get your podcast. We don't care where you get your podcast.
Starting point is 00:17:56 Get him up your butt. Newsie's out now. Sweet out. Now, here's my question. When he says, my butt's on fire. Does he mean, like, my ass is on fire? Like, that food was too spicy? No, the fireplace was on his backside.
Starting point is 00:18:18 His backside was facing. fireplace. That's all. Yeah. Oh, okay. Because that was like, how spicy is this food? No, no. I have a feeling that that was kind of like a fun ad lib of the movie. Like, you know, or the kids having fun, you know, it's like, you know. Did Virginia have a bidet in her bathroom?
Starting point is 00:18:33 Oh, Jason, I wrote this down. Okay, Virginia seemingly only has a bidet. I didn't see it. Paul just got so lit up because I didn't see it. I agree, Paul. I agree. She only has a bidet. I agree. I did forensic research.
Starting point is 00:18:49 Looking for a bowl. I rewound it three times because I was like, I'm going to bring this up and no one's going to agree with me. No one's going to know what the fuck I'm talking about. I'm going to feel insane. She only has a bidet. Yes, it's so funny. Can you only have a bidet?
Starting point is 00:19:05 No, it's not. You can't do poops in a bidet. June. So she's running from the main bathroom. It doesn't know. Wait, wait a bit. I don't like either the phrase or the hand gesture that went along with that.
Starting point is 00:19:20 Flush you clean. Flush you clean. I mean, you could probably get away with some pee because it's going to go down the same way. Definitely. That's what it's used for normally, right? No. No. What is what is happening? A bidet is not a urinal.
Starting point is 00:19:34 What is a bidet? It's just for cleaning. It's like a wash is your asshole. Oh, I thought you were supposed to, but, but I thought you can sit on it. So I thought you're supposed to pee in it. You're supposed to let it clean to dry. A to-to-to-to-to-to-to-the-vance technology. Okay, I also don't like the way you're stepping out all those teas.
Starting point is 00:19:54 To-to-to-to-toil. The To-to-to-toil. Both of you are freaking me out right now. I don't feel safe. There's a mail with the shish-kabob with my face on it. There is, but the to-to-to toilet is meant for you to sit. It's a convenient bidet, but those bidet from the past, it was kind of next to a toilet. And then you would kind of finish your business and, like, run over in a cron-a-a-a-old.
Starting point is 00:20:18 crouched position and let like a water fountain full of water just kind of clean at your butthole. I think that's crazy, though, to have to use a different toilet bowl and then to have to, like, shuffle over with your pants down to a bidet. Well, if you're an Italian older man, I'm not saying I do this, but there, I feel like people in my family took off all their clothes to poop. Like, I feel like they'd get too sweaty, right? All the Italian older men in your family?
Starting point is 00:20:45 Look, I feel like that was like a thing. I'm Italian and I have a lot of like bigger men in my family. And I feel like there was a joke that they always would take off all their clothes to take a shit. I have a friend who does that. Yeah. It's like I don't want to get my clothes sweaty. Yeah. I don't know that some people I think do that to just concentrate on what needs to happen.
Starting point is 00:21:06 I'm taking off all my clothes. No. I mean, like if that's the case, if you need to take all your clothes off in order to take a shit, then you might as well just go straight to the shower. That's what you're saying. By the way, go home. Like, don't see out. Like, it's just getting the car and go, oh, you're done.
Starting point is 00:21:22 Your day is over at that point. Well, I am shocked that that's what a bidet is. I, and I honestly think I might have been using it wrong because I thought you were supposed to pee in it and then sit on it. Wait, how many times are you using a bidet? Maybe I'm wrong. There's actually a couple of scars in L.A. that have bidets, and I thought you could sit on it and then let it.
Starting point is 00:21:38 Are they bidet spots? Wash you. I mean, I'm looking at it. I mean, you can certainly key in a bidet, but I don't think it's like the equivalent of a urinal. You know what I mean? Like, like we're, oh, pee and here and poop in there. I mean, that's why they're next to each other.
Starting point is 00:21:57 I mean, by the way, I remember. I mean, we are, aren't we too old to be trying to crack the coat on bidetes? I guess it's, I think we are. Like, shame on us. Whatever it was, it was. I will say this much, I once went over to a friend's house. and he was showing me around. It was very interesting house.
Starting point is 00:22:16 And he goes, check this out. And he had a urinal in the shower. And I said, oh, what's that? And he said, well, I don't want to pee in the shower, but I do want to pee in the shower. So I installed this urinal, so I don't have to, like, pee in the shower. And I was like, uh-huh. Wait, what?
Starting point is 00:22:36 So, like, the idea being like, he doesn't want to pee. Was it, like, built into the wall? It built into the wall in the shower. So it was sort of like, all right, I can pee. Like, it was on the opposite side. So where the water comes down. I have a question for both. Sure.
Starting point is 00:22:50 Are you peeing in the shower? No. Okay. So do you have the overwhelming desire to pee in the shower? Sometimes I have had that desire. And sometimes I have peed in the shower. Sure. I've done that. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:23:01 But I think it's very different for women. Yeah. Because it's like, that's a whole situation to have to pee in a shower. We don't, I'm not peeing. Yeah, I'm not peeing in a bathtub. I mean, it's very easy to. It does require some cognitive dissonance room because we all use the same shower here. And I know how many men and young boys are peeing in the shower.
Starting point is 00:23:22 And every time I go in there, I got to forget about it. Here's an update. I don't pee in the shower ever. I don't think I've ever peed in a shower. You know what I do before a shower? I go to the bathroom. Well, here's the thing. I agree with you.
Starting point is 00:23:34 Somebody told me. Sometimes it'll catch you on a wares. No, I can see where that might happen. But I was made fun of because I was like, oh, I never would pee in a shower. That's disgusting. And someone's like, what are you talking about? That's like one of the best things you could do. What do you mean?
Starting point is 00:23:49 Who said that? Who said that's one of the best things you? I have a list, sir. Do you want to know? I have a list. I would love to compare. Cababs at midnight, number one. President Barack Hussein Obama is the person who told me that.
Starting point is 00:24:04 So there you go. Holy shit. All right, so she has a bidet. So she's probably pissing in that. So she exclusively has a bidet? It only has a bidet. I couldn't find a bowl in any shot. I also then, for a moment, like, froze the frame and go, all right, if that's the door and there's the sink and we know where the tub is, there is simply no room for a twit because there's a wall here.
Starting point is 00:24:31 Yes. I thought for sure the bidet is, I was like, the bowl must be a cross from that bidet. And then there is a shot that gives you that and it's not there. Not there. It's just not there. Oh, but you know, this might just be, again, chalk this up to, it's Canadian. Yep. They may use a bidet in a totally different way than us. These fucking backwards-ass idiots are busy shitting in bidet.
Starting point is 00:24:55 It won't go down. It won't go down. My poop won't go down. That's not a Canadian. Yeah, it is a little bit, right? I'm sorry. I'm sorry. My turd won't go down. Oh, I'm so sorry. I'm sorry. Do you see Fago? I don't even know why they're saying Parker.
Starting point is 00:25:15 All right. So can I just like, I knew that we were in for a trip when this movie opens up with this young girl, Aetian, is that Ateen, walking out of her dorm. No, that's Bernadette O'Hara. Antian is the French boy. What is how? Oh, sorry. I have the names I'm not going to really invest in much time. That's Bernadette O'Hara.
Starting point is 00:25:35 So who I thought was the killer until a moment. ago. And I thought it was going to be the lead. I also, I also was confused by, because they never finds her body. But it's very much so like both the killer and our lead. Yeah. Like, I mean, the hairstyles of the time. She's our Drew Baramore. For all intents of purposes, she's our Drew Baramor. She's getting killed right out of the gate. That's why we never see the top 10 together. The top 10's always coming and going. Like even when we meet the top 10 in the bar, well, Bernadette's not there, so they're nine. And Radar, Jr. isn't there. So that's eight. And then, and then the other one enters in two. So we're starting off the top 10, we're only seeing seven.
Starting point is 00:26:11 So there's a lot of coming and going of the top 10. So that opening moment where she's walking and you're like, okay, what's happening? Then you hear like almost a whip like and she flips down, eats it face first and her like, oh, she's been tripped by the murderer. But no, she was tripped by this old woman walking a dog, which for her to have tripped over that dog, the amount of spatial awareness that she would like. That's wrapped up, like, around and around and around her legs. Like Indiana Jones is like whipped her.
Starting point is 00:26:46 She would have had to have spun in place in order to get that wrapped up. And the leash would have to be conservatively like 40 feet long. And the dog is like a pug. Like the dog is not a dog that is taking along. That's an English full dog. Yeah, very cute dog. Very cute dog. And one of her teachers or the school headmaster or something?
Starting point is 00:27:04 Headmistress, rather, yeah. Who is also set up to be, I mean, I guess everybody, is a red herring and a thing like this. But, I mean, she's definitely setting herself up to be like, you better not go to that damn bar, you know, and she lays it all on thick. And I'm like, okay, well, she's going to come back. And she does come back. And then she disappears.
Starting point is 00:27:22 She comes back to, like, introduce the class at one point. Well, I found it very strange that Bernadette, after she walks away from the headmistress and is, like, very polite to her and says, like, oh, absolutely headmistress. And I, you got it, headmistress. And then headmistress says, come along, Winston and then Bernadette says come along Winston give mommy head yeah that was weird super weird well that's a Canadian third yeah that's dogs giving grown women yeah I mean the 80s
Starting point is 00:27:53 80s a lot of Canadian women were married to their dogs it's a practice that's only recently fallen out of favor in the great in the great north of Canada um the the scene then immediately devolves into Bernadette being choked in real time for like six minutes. For like six minutes, she seems to die. The killer releases their hold on her and she bounces up, runs away, and she doesn't ever run away. She only runs like two cars over. She's in the parking lot. And the killer seems to be like, well, I'm going to start to be slow in this.
Starting point is 00:28:39 Like, everyone's being too slow. Yeah, the killer decides, like, I'm going to just start stalking her by sneaking into other unlocked cars. I couldn't think that out. By the way, here's what I really needed an explanation for, because once we get to the end and do our triple reveal, and then we do know, I guess, that it's Ann. It's been Ann the whole time. I'm looking back and I'm like, there's a moment with Bernadette where she, everybody recognizes the killer. And Bernadette is like, oh, my gosh, thank God. It's, thank God, you're here and sort of collapses in.
Starting point is 00:29:11 into the killer's arms. And that killer is roughly like two feet taller than her. Well, there's a lot. They do this a bunch where sometimes it's not the young actress playing the murderer. And sometimes it is. There's a lot of focus on the black gloves that seem like big burly hands are inside. But I just needed some explanation about the height disparity at the end. Like that was crazy.
Starting point is 00:29:36 Oh, no. Yeah, there's a bunch of crazy stuff. And how is Anne successfully getting? Is she doing all of this wearing her Virginia mask? Well, no, no. She gets the Virginia mask later. I think that she gets the Virginia mask. Wait, now, when they go and break into the taxidermist, Radar Jr.'s layer, he's got a mask.
Starting point is 00:29:59 Now, is that of Anne? No, it's Bernadette. We think it's dead body, but it turns out it's just a mask. And so basically... Well, it's a bloody mask, though. I mean, why did he make it that way? Well, they say later on, like, I guess he was just experimenting with what her head would look like cut off. But they say later on.
Starting point is 00:30:18 And that's the thing about Alfred. Like, he, that's Alfred. And he isn't the killer, but there's something very wrong with him nonetheless. And how, so you tell me then, how the hell is he getting in the top 10? This is a guy who carries a lab rat around in his pocket. That's why I think it's because of his dad. Yeah, it must be. It must just be wealth.
Starting point is 00:30:37 And so because it does seem like a very, the scene with her mother in the birthday party scene is very obsessed with class and wealth and the rich people being important and blah, blah, blah. Okay. But again, it seems like at one point, I guess, it seems like he's in on it on some level because he would have had to have made a mask for her, right, for Anne.
Starting point is 00:31:00 Seemingly, yes. He seemed like he was making death masks based on his work at the funeral. That's what I got. Like he was like, you know what? If I'm here, I'll make a death mask and then I'll be able to make my own fun things. That's interesting. Because they did show a bunch of face masks. Did they ever, they never found any of the bodies, though?
Starting point is 00:31:19 Because the top 10 are all in the cottage behind Virginia's house. With their little birthday hats on, which I really appreciate it. Really great. Do you think that they put the birthday hats on both like after the killing or just for that night? You think that they're just sitting? Just in time for her birthday. Yes. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:31:36 Yeah. Yeah, I think they've just been hanging out there until the birthday. Otherwise, it would be bad luck. I would have loved to have seen Anne go shopping for birthday hats. Like, oh, it's, you know, it's Ginny's birthday. And then you're like, you didn't understand. Oh, she was doing it for the reveal. One of the things that would have helped me very much is if we saw, like, we got to see Virginia and her mother in those flashback scenes.
Starting point is 00:31:59 And we get a sense of like, oh, her mother is the towny trash that was having an affair with the rich, you know, But was she trash? She looked like a rich woman. She looked like somebody. Because she married rich then, is what kind of is then said. So that Anne and Virginia are half-sisters because of this affair, you know, and that that is, and I would have been tracking this so much more if I'd seen more of the parents, more of everyone's parents. If I had a sense of both, not just the 10 as the 10, but also the 10's parents as important figures.
Starting point is 00:32:35 figures in town? All we really have is her Virginia's dad, who's kind of absent and Virginia's therapist David, who is very present. All right, so Virginia's dad, I wrote down, I wrote down, mark my words, he's the killer
Starting point is 00:32:51 because that relationship was... You wrote down, mark my words? Mark my words. You wrote down. I want to see that. What I would like to see? Mark my words. Wow. I can't read it. You did. Zoom background. I did. I wrote 16 minutes and called it.
Starting point is 00:33:08 Amazing. Because because I didn't like what was going on there. And then I started to think, oh, you know what he did? He implanted his own brain into her brain. And it was basically killing anyone that was like flirting with her or like helping her. So it was almost like the dad was like because he's like, my father wouldn't like that very much. She says at one point. I'm like, oh, she is her father or her father is dead.
Starting point is 00:33:30 I also thought that something happened in that experiment and like some sort of killer's brain was put in hers during the open brain surgery. But I, but here's the thing, though. I still am not quite clear on why, well, first of all, why didn't those kids go to Ginny's birthday party? Because they were going to have their party. They were at a separate party with. I know they were, but I guess my question is, would they also obsessed with class and did
Starting point is 00:33:58 they also frown upon her family? Yeah, because you saw that thing. Is it just because you go to the school doesn't mean you get in with the cool. It's like that was like that guy who was guarding the gate of the house where the birthday party was like. I also think at that point because remember is it Rudy that she's talking to who doesn't even remember that she went to their school? That's what I found to be very distressing. She's not even on the 10s radar. But Jason, if if someone you knew just in your class, okay, even if this school is like, you know, a giant high school, if someone you knew was in a whole.
Starting point is 00:34:35 horrible accident off the bridge and his mother died and they were like, wouldn't you remember them? I agree. It seems, this is again where it feels like the movie is both kind of like twin peaks in that it is small town murder in a small town kind of thing. Oh, the ugliness of like wholesome small town Canada or whatever. But it's just the scale is so big. Like there's too many, theoretically there's too many people to play by such small rules. Well, but it's like it makes no sense because because everybody would know. Like my gut was this.
Starting point is 00:35:10 She falls off that bridge and like, oh, we got to get her into our click because we want to have the almost dead girl in our click. That's like a cool, like that's a cool thing for them. And then she's like, you know what? I remember when you guys didn't even want to come to my birthday party. So I'm now going to kill you off one by one. Like I felt like that was a great, like that's the great thing, which is like, oh, yeah. I agree. That's great.
Starting point is 00:35:29 I love that. I love the idea that she didn't, they didn't come to my party, so I'm killing them. What I couldn't then figure out is, they didn't come to my birthday party, so my half-sister is killing them. Yeah, what? Because I represented the infidelity of her father that her, that Anne's mother. That was the thing. Anne was like, my mother never let me forget.
Starting point is 00:35:51 I'm like, who is your mother? And who is your father? Who are you? We don't have the history to understand that there's landing. No. And again, why did you need to kill all your own friends? Yeah. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:36:04 Just to have revenge on Virginia, who doesn't even remember? By the way, have her getting into an accident, get her changed face, then she comes back to the school and they don't realize. There's a million reasons here, but she's just killing her friends. Well, I guess she's not, Anne is killing her friends. Yes. And is killing her friends. She's just trying to remember stuff. Yes.
Starting point is 00:36:24 So Anne is killing her friends, but do we know why? She wants to frame her, I think, right? That's what she wants to do. Well, no, she doesn't want to frame her because she was always going to kill her. Murder suicide, she says. Yes. Okay. But I do think there is a world in which Anne was jealous the whole time that all of the top 10 were interested in Virginia.
Starting point is 00:36:48 And I don't really like couldn't really follow because it seemed like sometimes the guys were with Maggie and fighting over Maggie. Those same guys seem to be also making out over kebabs with Virginia. I couldn't follow all of that. And I was like, oh, is there? Because I remember at the dance, Anne was sort of looking over. Oh, yes. So, okay, she's, I bet you she's mad with Steve. She is mad because, you like Steve?
Starting point is 00:37:14 Yeah. Because everyone likes Ginny now, right? That's it. And she's like, everyone likes Jenny. And basically, I think that Anne is keeping it real. Anne's like, guys, we didn't go to her birthday party. And now you like her. I'm going to fucking kill you.
Starting point is 00:37:29 Was it also? Anne's birthday that day? It was Anne's party. It was definitely Anne's party. Yes. So basically, Anne's little speech at the end is, I don't know, she only says party. They're at Anne's party. It's what she says. I mean, I feel like the, but at the end when Anne is confronting Virginia, she basically says that, you know, that her mother, again, who we have never met, never let her forget that her father cheated on her with the town, townie tracks.
Starting point is 00:38:01 He'd just like her. A fucking her. Father's mistress. And you're his daughter. My sister. Something she never left my father. That's why my mother left us. She could never forgive him for having you.
Starting point is 00:38:26 It's all your fault. You've ruined our lives. You should have died that night at it now. You never should have been born. You know, like that, Anne seemed to want revenge on Virginia because of Virginia was her father's love child. Right. You know, essentially. But again, why take out all of her friends?
Starting point is 00:38:51 I don't understand what the, yes, why does that mean Anne has to kill the 10? And I guess, I guess, yes. Because I think the 10 has switched their tune too much. Like, I think if it was given, if Anne had her way, Anne would be like, What? This girl's trash. She should never be in our group. But yet she gets in the group and then all the guys are like, Ginny, Ginny, Jenny. And she's like, guys, you're fucking losing your mind.
Starting point is 00:39:16 Like, she is in that. That would be great. I definitely didn't see that. I didn't see it either. And it's a bummer because it's like, you know how you know that they don't connect Ginny to the town, what would be, like you said earlier, the town famous story of the car that plunged off the bridge? they do the bridge game, the game of chicken on the bridge with Virginia in the car. Wouldn't they be like, no, she almost died on this bridge.
Starting point is 00:39:45 Of course not. By the way, that was a terrible thing. And by the way, she doesn't remember any of that that she fell off the bridge. I would imagine that would be a part of the story. Oh, yeah. Why would you, like, move her out of this town? Well, I think they did. Yeah, I know.
Starting point is 00:40:01 I think you're right. Because they moved back. Yeah, they moved back. But if they moved, then why was the cottage set up? Yeah. Right. I know, but like, why was the cottage? Like, that cottage had a touch.
Starting point is 00:40:15 It was a soft market. Okay. And they couldn't sell it. So they came back. It just sat there. It was hard to move the house because the cottage was still set up for a birthday party six years ago. By the way, also, why was her mom still wet at the birthday table?
Starting point is 00:40:33 I'm just realizing this now. The mom fell in the water and was in the car. I would argue that some divers went down and got the mom out of the car to bury her. Yes. Right. Like how come it does it? It seems like the mom was just recently taken out of the water. The mom is still sopping wet.
Starting point is 00:40:48 She's still wearing the outfit from that night? Every bit of it. I was confused as to why when they got out, when Virginia gets out of the water, there's a pool of blood in it. Yes. From what? From what? From who has the bloody? Who is that down there?
Starting point is 00:41:03 Who, yes. And so then I had to think, wait a minute, does nobody know that the mother died? I thought about that as well. Did Anne go down and get the mom out of the water and put her in the cottage? Put her somewhere. But then, but then, wait, but Ginny would know, like, the mom just disappeared from existence? This is what I'm asking. You know what I mean? Like, this is where the movie is like so weirdly, like, no exposition than all the exposition except certain elements that I would love. love to know. Well, the other thing that I couldn't quite parse was the dad, when he comes in and sees that birthday party.
Starting point is 00:41:46 Now, I'm just in the dad's point of view right now. He comes in and sees it. He's connecting the dots. I think he knows this was the party that she didn't, that she never had on the night of her mother's death. She enters the room with a birthday. a cake with candles on it, but this is Anne, not her.
Starting point is 00:42:07 Well, but from his point of view, he does think it's her. And he says that he shouldn't have done that. He shouldn't have kept her away. And I was like,
Starting point is 00:42:23 from where? Was he lying to her the whole time? But I can't tell if it's for what? For the, I can't tell if it's the science experiments that he did. If it's for bringing her back here. I can't tell if it's for David. Or if it's because he was absent so much that all of these bad things happened to.
Starting point is 00:42:42 What does the dad even do? Because he's like, at one point, he's like, okay, how many? Okay, great. And it looks like he's like going to the sight of a crash. He's like a FEMA officer or something. I don't know. I mean, and, and, oh, yeah, yeah. I mean, he seemed like I also was, I was also predicting that the dad was going to kill, that
Starting point is 00:42:59 killed the mother, right? That would be a reveal, too, because he also said, look, I don't want to, I don't want to, I don't want to get too weird about it, but I didn't like the way he kissed her on the lips like that. I didn't hate it. I didn't like it. I didn't love that, but I'll be honest, guys.
Starting point is 00:43:11 I'm shocked. To me, the real problematic relationship in this is with the therapist. David. Tenderly caressing her face. They kiss multiple times. They have intimacy beyond anybody else in this movie. Well,
Starting point is 00:43:26 she invites him to her birthday party. Well, the other thing about, the other thing that's so weird, though, is like her dad. Dad has to leave to go to some sort of like disaster at sea or whatever that was. Okay. But then he says on Sunday, I'm going to come back. I'm going to be back and I'm going to take you out.
Starting point is 00:43:47 And we're going to dine together just me and you. And we're going to dance. And I'm like, what the fuck is this? Yes. What 17-year-old girl wants to do this on her birthday? Yeah, daddy-daughter date. Oh, it was romance. It was.
Starting point is 00:44:05 Well, I think that she's got problematic relationships with all the men in her life, obviously. Yeah. Now, when the guy gets stabbed in the throat, he's making out with Anne in the mask, right? But then in the morning, when Ginny gets up, she's like, what did I do last night? So is that Ginny, like, I guess I'm trying to figure out, you'll see why. You see the moment, you see that Anne keeps chloroforming her? Okay, okay. You do.
Starting point is 00:44:33 I mean, this is just... You do, you see it. It's this one scene at the end of the movie where Anne explains the whole movie. And yet not all of it. Not all of it. But you get these moments where she explains that she's been chloroforming every... Her chloroforming Virginia, which is allowing... I let me ask a question about chloroform.
Starting point is 00:44:55 Yeah. Do you... I understand that once that... once that cloth goes over your nose and mouth that you pass out, but do you not remember the moment of like someone's putting a cloth over my face? Right. It is a thing that in movies, we have been led to believe that you put that on and someone immediately passes out.
Starting point is 00:45:20 There's a really funny movie, Mike and Nick and Alice, where the whole fight scene is based around trying to chloroform someone. And it does not work. It does not work the way that movies have told you. It works. And, but yes, like, you're out. So I guess she would just be like, I was in the kitchen and then I guess I fell asleep. Like, I mean, that, like, I think that, like, because I don't think, yeah.
Starting point is 00:45:37 Well, this is where, this is where the movie is trying to use her open brain surgery past as a way to, like, kind of obfuscate her, her, her, basically give you holes in her memory. So she's not remembering that she was chloroformed. She's just, she's just. Yeah. Yeah. No, well, that's the thing is you realize at the very, very end that Anne has been dry. driving Virginia crazy. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:46:02 You know. So you guys are under the impression because I think I am too that Anne never once is like moonlighting as the daughter with like the dad or the therapist. I guess that was the question. I was like, do we know that for certain
Starting point is 00:46:17 that Ann has had never done that? Because she goes, I walked like you, I talked like you. I did all that stuff. But she never talks when she's murdering people. I don't know. I don't know. It's a good question.
Starting point is 00:46:28 And for all I know, there might be scenes that are in fact what we call undercover Anne. But I don't, I don't care. And I'm not tracking it. Me neither. Here's where undercover Anne wasn't at the chapel.
Starting point is 00:46:44 At the chapel? With Rudy. Yes, she is. No, that's not undercover. No, that's not. That's Ginny. Because Rudy didn't actually kill himself. He cut his own hand. But she ran off because she, and this is
Starting point is 00:46:59 where the movie also is tricky. She also is having brain issues. She is also blacking out. So she's blacking out and she's getting chloroformed because she doesn't remember. It's a tricky double-edged sword to have. And you mentioned this too because there's a lot of confusion. The movie's not helping us ever because there's so much confusion like you mentioned in the couplings of the 10.
Starting point is 00:47:23 Oh, I couldn't follow any of that. Rudy seemed big mad at one point and I was like, over what? constantly swapping partners in a way that I'm like, well, no, just decide that Steve is with Maggie and this one. And because the fact that everybody is so now they're now David's pursuing or not, Steve is pursuing Virginia and this and that. And I'm certain that's supposed to help me understand maybe why Ann is feeling a way that Anne is feeling, but I'm not tracking it at all because everybody seems to be bouncing between
Starting point is 00:47:57 partner. Can I also say this, and this is a big note I wrote down, really disturbed by the lack of grief. Now wait, I can see your pad. It says, mark my words. Mark my words. Very distra. But, like, I was very distra. It seems like you wanted your own self to mark your words.
Starting point is 00:48:14 Mark my words, Paul. And I see later on your pad, it just says MMW? I write down all my notes just in case I'm ever chloroformed. So I'll know. I'll know the real truth. But there is the lack of mourning for all of these best friends. And they are like literally, and there's sometimes like, oh, I bet you there's missing. Like, there's no search party.
Starting point is 00:48:40 Okay. So now here's what I'm starting to think. Because I think Rudy implies this at one point. When he says we're all falling apart, that statement is not really about how like almost the majority of them is missing. and haven't been heard from in like, I think, weeks or days now. It's more about our interpersonal dynamics, are fraud. And this is new for us as the top ten.
Starting point is 00:49:09 And I couldn't tell. In retrospect, I'm like, wait, was Anne the whole time undercover Anne also creating friction, like a little mischief maker? Sure. Amongst the couples and so forth, you mean? Yes. Like was, okay, so for example, was Virginia, who is undercover Anne, taking Steve home to then skewer him in the head? Was that an effort to take him because he belongs to someone else?
Starting point is 00:49:43 I don't think undercover Anne was at that dance because I think that was Virginia, because Anne watches her leave. That's right. Okay. So then Virginia and Steve go to the house. Make skewers. Undercover Anne comes. Chloriforms Virginia in the house. Then brings the skewers and the hummus plate and the charcutory platter that she's made. Half to, by the way, it's great. And she comes out at Fireside.
Starting point is 00:50:14 They do some light petting. Next thing, you know, skewer to the head, Steve is dead. That's all the Anne of that moment. And so then, then they do all these. work to show you blood everywhere. Then undercover Anne cleans everything up so that when Virginia wakes up
Starting point is 00:50:34 the next morning and is like, what did happen last night? Right. So she's not walking down to this. I guess that was an easier kill because it was just kind of like a skewer through the neck. By the way, that would not kill you. A skewer through the neck would not kill you at all. Wouldn't? No. Well, okay. Interesting, Jason.
Starting point is 00:50:52 Well, by the way, though. It would pierce your windpipe. It would do a lot of stuff, but it would not like. Oh, it seems pretty bad to me. Oh, it would be bad, but you would not die instantly. Okay. Okay. Well, here's my other question. Where did Ann get the chloroform?
Starting point is 00:51:09 Yeah. I mean. And all the reusable masks. How many Virginia masks did she go through? I think it's just one. But I think my question, too, is like, well, they spent a lot of time. Sure did. We spent a lot of time with that science class and the science.
Starting point is 00:51:27 experiment and the frog and the sort of electric current. I thought for sure, okay, this is coming back somehow. Big time. We're going to either we are going, her mom's going to come back to life via this control. This is going, it's never
Starting point is 00:51:43 none of it. I thought for sure that teacher, we have such investment in this nerdy teacher. Right. We're doing jokes at his expense. I was like, oh, when are we going to get this guy? We need another beat of this guy. He can help somebody or get killed or something. Nope. There's no
Starting point is 00:51:59 there's no no adults are targeted no like it's only the top 10 are targeted and only to be abducted and like you were saying everybody is like huh it's so weird it's like the top 10's falling apart and like on the front page of
Starting point is 00:52:15 the newspaper is like six missing like school would be shut down and yet not a single funeral not a not a no car no car refuse not nothing nothing. There's not a single law enforcement. There's nobody looking into this.
Starting point is 00:52:31 There's no journalists. Well, there are, I really couldn't understand this. It seems like Rudy's scarf is buried, Rudy buries a scarf in the flower bed outside. And the skull. Yeah, what was that about? And the skull. So this is so one of the things the movie
Starting point is 00:52:47 does is misdirect you into thinking almost every member of the 10 is the killer. So Rudy has, what we learned, is he's done a prank, which is he buried a scarf and a skull from the science lab in the flower beds
Starting point is 00:53:03 at school for people to find. And it's a prank. We also think, we are also led to believe that the Albert, the nerdy kid, that he's the killer because he's making the death masks and he's got the Bernadette. They're all fucking creepy. The ten is the creepiest group of people. Every member of the
Starting point is 00:53:19 10 seems like they could be the killer. Oh, we've got, we haven't even talked about the kid who gets killed by having weights dropped on his I think is that the same kid who went in and stole her underwear? No, that's ATN. ATN. ATN is killed by the scarf.
Starting point is 00:53:36 Never wear a scarf while fixing a motorcycle. The scarf gets pulled in as a garot. Is that how you say it? Garot. But the guy with the weights, the weight dropped on his dick just to make him drop. Maybe the only person that I would believe would be in the 10 is this guy the handsome job. who's doing the weightlifting. Yeah, I guess.
Starting point is 00:54:00 I mean, it's also Canada. He belieably to me, I'm thinking, now maybe this is Canada. So a Canada 10, you know what I mean? Like, you know, to me, like the athletic, handsome guy would be in the popular click. But, yeah, again, if that's what it means to be in the top 10. Well, in Canada, apparently Albert's in the top 10 as well. What the fuck? Well, that's, yeah.
Starting point is 00:54:22 What makes a member of the top 10? I believe it. I believe it, honestly, the only way you can. get in there is because of what your father does. I'm going to regret this, but I suspect there are still people in Canada who listen to this show. Right in. Tell us, what the fuck is up with your 10? Tell us, how does the
Starting point is 00:54:39 10 work in Canada? Because it seems like it's a bunch of cool kids and a couple of fucking dorks. I don't get it. The other thing about this, too, is I felt like, oh, is this going to be some sort of, like, play on 10 little Indians? The Agatha Christie story, right? And I was like, oh, that might be interesting. But they're all killed without any cleverness. Like they're all killed just like stab, stab, choke, choke. Like it's, there's no like funny tip of the hat.
Starting point is 00:55:06 And there doesn't seem to be anything to the order. Each kill doesn't reveal a new clue or a new element or it doesn't give us more of the story. It's just, oh, I guess that person's dead now. That woman, the other girl who was blonde, short hair blonde, don't know her name, when the dad is running to the cottage and finds her and she's holding. holding that gift. Yeah, the birthday present. But she's dead via what I actually had no idea.
Starting point is 00:55:33 Was she dead, though? Well, I don't know, but is she in the top ten? Because if so, why wasn't she at the table? I felt like she was alive out there. And that's what I could be here. She's still alive. She's number 11? Or, or I guess maybe Anne didn't get to all 10?
Starting point is 00:55:50 I think that that's what happened. I think that the birthday came a little bit too soon. And she counted the dad as part of the top. tent. I mean, but also... And is David alive at the end? But also, you know, shows up at the door at the end. The cop who had come to the other day.
Starting point is 00:56:04 The very polite cop is like, hey, I'd like to talk to the girl. And he's like, actually, she's sleeping right now. It's like, all right, I'll come back a little bit later. It's like, yeah, they have like a little moment. All the guys, all of the grown men looked the same as well. Can I tell you who I thought he was? Who? I thought that that guy was the guy who worked the gate at flashback of Anne's party.
Starting point is 00:56:26 Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. And he was still making sure. I had no idea who he was. Well, I mean, yeah, yeah, because I'm also realizing that the top 10, Ginny is at the top 10, too. Sure. So when, like, because she just, her head is down. That's the reveal.
Starting point is 00:56:39 There's a lot of people at that table. Like, the 10 numbers. I'm telling you, there's only like seven or so people at the table. We've never seen all 10 in the same room. We do. We haven't. We can agree that. And that's why I think that girl, but the girl who's holding the gift in the rain at the end,
Starting point is 00:56:53 she appears to be drugged up. She doesn't seem like. she's normal, but she doesn't seem dead either. She looks frozen in shock. I thought maybe her wrists were, I didn't know. Maybe she's dying. I couldn't figure her out at all. And maybe she's not quite 10 yet.
Starting point is 00:57:11 Maybe she's like, maybe she's 10 adjacent. I don't know. By the way, we haven't talked about the one thing that truly blew my mind. This is, this is my crush of all crushes. This is Mary Ingalls from Little House in the Prairie as the lead. and that was a huge show. No, no one. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:57:29 No, I remember. Oh, no, that was such a big show. Oh, my God. I was so excited. And I guess I knew about this movie on some level because, you know, I was a little perv as a kid and people were like, she's in her bra in a movie. And I was like, so I feel like I didn't know what this movie was until I saw this. And I was like, yeah, I finally got to see Mary Engels.
Starting point is 00:57:49 Oh, that's so funny. It was so funny to me that she, like, takes her shirt off. but leaves her bottoms on but puts her robe on over her bra I was like This is movie logic And she puts on like She puts on the jazz soundtrack
Starting point is 00:58:05 Like she puts on like Pina pana pa pa I don't think No sense Now why was that That guy was only sneaking in To steal her underwear To put it in his shirt
Starting point is 00:58:14 Pocket That's what it would That's what the movie Would have you believe Yes This is a case for Benoit Blanc I mean really
Starting point is 00:58:22 I would love to see We now know how it happened, but I would love to see him get in here and piece this all together. We need that. Yeah, because she's going to jail. She, like, Ginny is going to jail, right? At the end? He's going to jail for the rest of her life. Well, that's what it.
Starting point is 00:58:36 Yes, it appears as though. Yeah. She's successfully. Wait, here's a question. Was David murdered at the end? David. David is. He's murdered in the house.
Starting point is 00:58:46 You know, out in the woods. The dad finds him out in the woods on his way to the cottage, like his face covered in blood. whose blood is all over the wall when that's David that's David but I don't know why he must have been over he must have stumbled over
Starting point is 00:59:03 to the cottage and David is the psychiatrist yes right who's but like remember that the final that's David's blood yeah because the dad walks in and goes oh my God is it like David's blood though I thought it was David because he's the last kill okay it must be okay man oh man this movie this is
Starting point is 00:59:19 it just keeps on given now it takes the dad It takes the dad, like, so long to walk from the house to the cottage. And every time he seems to, like, come through the trees and then it reverses onto the cottage and he's still so far away from it. He has, like, three different, like, ah, I'm finally, I'm here now. And then he's still, like, so far away from the cottage. It's awesome.
Starting point is 00:59:46 I, again, this movie takes such a long time. Nothing supernatural. I thought for sure there might be a supernatural, a switcheroo. a body switch, something. Obviously, we have opinions about this movie. It might be the best movie we've ever done, but there are people out there with a different opinion. It is now time for second opinions.
Starting point is 01:00:12 This person recommends it. What is the message? Subjective. I need a second opinion. Thank you. All right. There are 906 total reviews. 70% are five-star reviews.
Starting point is 01:00:36 Now, I didn't want to read anyone. but this one because I thought it was so absolutely insane. This one was written in 2004 and the author is a person. This is the author's name, Dinosaur Events, Florida. That is the author's name. Dinosaur events, Florida. This is written in 2004 and all in caps. Okay. So today was the big day for happy birthday to me to come out on DVD. I ran to get it today and rushed home to see the great high-definition transfer into my horror. The freaking classic orchestrated musical score that made this movie creepy is freaking gone. How can they take away the original music score and add in that silly, stupid,
Starting point is 01:01:25 Keystone Caper, moonlighting chip's silly music? Please, anyone out there, please contact me. We must get this movie to its original self. looking for retro S-A-T-X dude. Can you make me a copy from your laser disc? I will pay you, bud, please, contact me. Did any other fans out there even realize how they messed up this music in the new release?
Starting point is 01:01:47 I mean, this is one of my all-time favorite horror movies. I've seen this in the theater in 1980, a year before it came out, and I have the VHS at home. I watch this movie all the time. I love it. The original music in this movie is classic. How can they get rid of it? I mean, I just wrote a letter to Columbia TriStar asking them to tell me what the hell were they thinking.
Starting point is 01:02:06 Clearly, it is very well-written and professionally done, ha, ha, ha. But I am just so bummed that I can't watch this movie now on DVD do the silly new music score they added. It makes no sense whatsoever now. I know the original movie scored by heart. And for every scene to watch it in crystal clarity and hear them new music, it just sucks. I am an avid horror fan. And if anyone wants to chat me up about this movie or any others in the past, past, present or future.
Starting point is 01:02:32 You can email me at, I won't say the email address. And I'm just wondering if any of you realize that the new music score of Happy Birthday to Me is not there. I need to chat with you. Okay, please. Thank you all. Glenn, South Florida, Chow. Five stars. Happy Birthday to Me,
Starting point is 01:02:49 music score gone. You know what? I hope that this impassioned plea yielded somebody sending this guy the copy that he wants. I will say this. I did write. Mark my word. the score is bad. The score did see a little TV.
Starting point is 01:03:05 I was like, they did have a little element to it. Scott chimes in to say that Maggie and Rudy were both alive at the end. So they made it out. The top ten is now only a top two. Okay. Sequel? Has there been a sequel? I don't think there is.
Starting point is 01:03:20 I don't think there is a sequel. There's a lot of... It's the kind of movie that you might be like, oh, there's eight more of them. Yeah, no. This is... Canadian really explains every one of the problems I had with this. It's so wild. I wanted to read this one story to you because I thought this was really funny.
Starting point is 01:03:33 Glenn Ford, that is the doc. That's the psychiatrist, right? Famous actor basically took this movie because he needed a paycheck. And apparently Glenn Ford and assistant director Charles Brave were involved in a dispute on set in which Glenn Ford hit the AD. The producer said he hit R.A.D. who had called a lunch break in the middle of one of Glenn's scene. I had to stop the police from arresting him. It was a mess.
Starting point is 01:03:59 Glenn wouldn't come out of his dressing room until the first. first AD apologized, and he said he would never apologize to Glenn. But I told him that this might be the end of his career as an AD if he didn't. So he went up and he said he was sorry, and Glenn said he was sorry. They kissed and made up. As far as I know, Glenn never hit anyone else again. What? Oh my God.
Starting point is 01:04:20 Crazy. Crazy story from this film. What a, what a nut. Can you imagine making this movie and getting so worked up about any of these scenes that you were willing to get physical with someone. It's truly wild. I think it was because he was heavily drinking on the set. One thing that I thought was interesting, and I think you guys will like this,
Starting point is 01:04:43 that Anne was shocked to be told that she was the killer halfway through filming. Because she already had shot her death scene. And apparently, they decided to change it midway through. So basically, they shot three endings to keep everybody guessing, but those claims were likely bogus to hide the fact that the script was being rewritten so late in the day. So it seems like they didn't like the ending and they changed it and none of it really makes sense.
Starting point is 01:05:11 Okay. So that helps out quite a bit. If that's the case, then that makes much more sense of it. Then because it is needlessly confusing and it sounds like that's a result of changes that were made. Yeah, the original ending of the script was this. Virginia was a killer and she was possessed by the spirit of her dead mother while committing the murders.
Starting point is 01:05:34 That's basically what I wrote in my notes. I said, early on, I said, mark my words. Okay, good. Virginia is, especially when she was like in the graveyard to see her mom
Starting point is 01:05:45 and all this talking to her mom and all this stuff. I was like, oh, okay. They zapped a side of her that she, it's Norman Bates, you know. And I think they changed it primarily because that's the ending of Friday the 13th. I think that they were like, oh, the original one.
Starting point is 01:06:00 I think that that's where they felt like, oh, oh, it's too much. Like, oh, it wasn't Jason. It was Jason's mom. So I feel like that's why they switch it up. Anyway, would you recommend this film? I have to say, I was so, yeah, I would. I do think it's very watchable. And it does, like, the birthday hats made me laugh.
Starting point is 01:06:20 There's stuff that's just interesting and so weird. But it's, you know, it doesn't. It's not a satisfying movie to watch. But it went by a lot quicker than I thought it. It's not very satisfying for a movie that's almost two hours long. I would say this is one for me that I don't think you should feel bad if you want to watch as much as you want and then bail or watch. But do watch the end. The end is pretty great.
Starting point is 01:06:46 Because I think the end is where it really starts getting interesting and weird. And the death scenes are pretty great too because they're so slow and they're so deliberate and it does feel like everyone is moving. Like if anyone just moved quickly, they would not have been killed. It's the kind of movie that we would be over the moon probably if it made a little bit more sense. We would have had a blast watching it. But it's confusing enough, and it sounds like they made late in the game decisions that make it confusing, that it's just not a, it doesn't pay off enough to make it like dynamite. Yeah. But fun as hell.
Starting point is 01:07:22 And definitely in this kind of, we're on a good run of like 80s. 80s vibes. I love it. Starting point is 01:08:41 Yeah. I'm in the room with Ben right now. Oh, so funny. That movie, I have been really, it's come up a bunch since we covered it just in conversations.
