White men and women can jump the weird way that Gary Busey calls emergency services and Jason and I live streaming in your house.
All this and more on a brand new How Did This Get Made?
Last Looks! Hit the theme!
Last looks
Paul Jason
Hello all my Lucy Bucs
It's me, Paul Shear
Your host and skydiving instructor
And welcome to
How Did This Get Made Last Looks?
I love being back here with you
Because this is your chance
To get your voice heard
On all the issues that you have
With DropZone, a movie
The Discord user hotline
Thinks should have had the tagline
DropZone,
Parachute first. Ask questions later.
Thank you Hotline for that alt tagline.
Now, a big shout out to the Midwest Shakes for today's opening theme song.
I loved it. You guys rule.
Remember, if you want me to thank you, like I just did for Hotline and Midwest Shakes,
it's very easy. You just have to give us something.
And that could be your talent, your time, or a combination of both.
Because if you have an alt movie tagline, you could submit it to us on our Discord.
at Discord.g.g slash HDTGM.
Let's see. That's who you got.
And if you are more inclined to write a song,
well, we would love to hear it as long as they are short.
15 to 20 seconds is best, but it's very easy to submit.
All I have to do is go to our homepage, hdtgm.com,
click the submit a song button, and you're done.
It's there.
And we will pick it.
We will use it.
We want to use it.
Just like I said, keep, um, short.
And I would be thanking you.
I'll be saying your name right here at the top of the episode.
That's prime.
Real estate. All right. Coming up on today's episode, we'll be hearing all of your corrections and
omissions on Drop Zone. And believe me, there are a lot. Plus, Jason will join me for a supersized
just chat where we break down the summer movies that we're really excited about. Plus,
I reveal to Jason the four new Fast and Furious TV shows in development, or what we know of those
four shows, as well as Jason and I talk in music. That's right. We have so much to get off our
chest. I cannot wait for you to listen to us chat. Now, as always, I will reveal the movie for
next week's episode, but there's a couple things I need to tell you about. As you all are aware,
Averyl Halley passed earlier this year, and we have been trying to find a way to properly
memorialize her beyond just talking about how amazing she was to the show. We wanted to create
something to actually give back. So we created this shirt based on a design used at her
Memorial, where 100% of the proceeds from this shirt, sticker, mug, whatever you want to do with
this design, will go to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation in Averill's memory. All I have to do to
purchase this is go to our merch link on hdtgm.com. And like I said, the design is absolutely
beautiful and you can put it on anything at all. It's a beautiful way to remember her, but also to give
back to such an amazing organization.
June is in mating season, which is out now on Netflix.
I believe Jason makes a little bit of a guest appearance in that show as well.
It's a brand new show from our friend, Nick Kroll.
It's hilarious.
And it is, you know, for fans of Big Mouth, you are going to absolutely love this show.
It is a plus plus Zach Woods is in it.
Sabrina Jaliel's is in it.
It's really, really great.
Also, if you're on Netflix, check out Black Monday.
June, myself, so many people in Black Monday. So happy that it's out there and people are finally catching it for the very first time. Don Cheadle, Andrew Reynolds, Regina Hall, me, Casey Wilson, so many great people. Now, our next live show at Largo in L.A. is sold out. But don't worry. We've announced the movie online. And if you want to come out and see Jason and I in Los Angeles, you still can do that on June 26. Dinosaur Improv will be at.
Largo. Now, the big news is this. Del Close Marathon is coming up. Now, what is the Del Close Marathon?
Well, Jason and I started improvising at UCB Theater back in the day. This is where our home base.
And we are doing a slew of shows. And guess what? You may be like, well, Paul, I don't live in New York.
Don't worry about it. These shows are also live streaming. And we are doing a 10-year anniversary of
one man's trash. That's right, the Chris Getherd, Dumbley.
show 10 year anniversary, okay?
We also are going to be performing with dinosaur out there.
Match Game 76, bringing back this classic show that if you don't know about Match
Game 76 is a show that I've been doing forever since the very first Del Close Marathon.
It is a bunch of insane people on stage.
Well, I would say it's a bunch of hilarious people on stage in one of the most insane shows
ever.
And I actually have stopped the live stream for that.
But make sure if you're in New York, you come check out match game as well as the George Lucas talk show, soundtrack, which Jason is in.
There's an ASCAT.
There's so many shows.
They are all listed on my website, Paul Shear.com.
But I cannot wait to see you all out there in New York.
Jason and I are pumped.
All right.
Now, that is all the plugs that I got for you today.
So let's get into it.
Last week, we talked at length about Drop Zone.
Well, we had questions.
and we might have even missed a few things.
Here is your chance to set a straight fact-check us, if you will.
It is now time for corrections and omissions.
Setting back to fiction and a world of contradictions.
Digging up the ugly truth is our state admission.
Sorting through the stinking pile of operas of opposition to the bar,
we like to call corrections and omissions.
Thank you, Casey Campbell, for that theme song.
Let's start with some phone calls.
First up, Sylvia, from home of the drop zone.
That's right.
She's calling from Washington, D.S.
Hi Paul and Jason.
This is Sylvia calling with an omission from Drop Zone.
So I'm not going to talk about the ridiculous idea of skydiving in D.C.
Or that the drop zone that they identify of Potomac Park is actually in Virginia.
Instead, I want to focus on the dead bodies.
The reason that the authorities think that the hijackers didn't make it off the plane
is because they found extra unidentified bodies.
Where did those bodies come from?
Who are they?
Did the hijackers kill random people?
Did they rob a morgue?
When did they have the opportunity to place dead bodies in the plane,
which would then be seen as the bodies of the hijackers?
There's just no explanation or discussion given to this.
And it seems like a large hole.
All right.
Love you guys.
Thanks.
Bye.
Well, Sylvia, good question.
Here's my question back to you.
you. Hmm. Okay. So they found extra bodies. Well, I guess they may have just found the right amount of
bodies, but that also wouldn't account for the fact that they didn't find the body of the
prisoner. They only found his thumb. And then I would go one step further and say that the amount
of time that it would take to actually find and identify all the bodies would be so long. That
wouldn't be just like something that you do very quickly off a manifest like an hour afterwards.
Because it seemed like people were getting sucked out of the plane. Yes, there are issues here.
I think that they just believe that the high, look, you're right. But I believe what they're saying is the hijackers plan was interrupted.
They weren't thinking about the skydiving element. They were like, oh, they're going to hijack a plane and land it.
little did they know they were going to hijack a plane and then skydive out of it.
I mean, clearly, these people have never heard of D.B. Cooper.
So I think that is the rub.
But to your point, I don't know if they put extra bodies in, but because they've lost a lot of bodies too.
And how would they know which one they lost?
Because they were just passengers.
It makes no sense.
Sylvia, thank you for bringing this up.
And I love that Potomac Park is in Virginia.
Next caller, Greg from Montana.
Hey, Paul.
As a firefighter and paramedic,
I thought I'd address a couple of things that came up in the episode of Drop Zone.
You guys were right.
Totally not acceptable that EMS wasn't the first on scene when that guy's shoot failed.
I mean, that's exactly what's going to happen in the real world.
EMS is going to be the first ones on scene.
They're probably going to be the first ones to draw him out of the water.
None of that was realistic.
Second of all, hey, I hate to tell you this,
but you're not writing in the back of my ambulance.
Unless your kid is being transported and your presence will help,
that's about the only reason you're going to be in the back of my ambulance with me.
I don't care if they're family.
I don't care if they're your best friend or whatever.
I got stuff to do and you're in my way.
You need to get out.
That's a movie trope that needs to go away.
And lastly, I'll say that I buy the bell ceremony that they have for their fallen comrade.
You know, people who do dangerous work, there's a kinship.
and you honor the people who pass doing that dangerous work.
Even if you don't know them sometimes, even if you don't like them, you honor their passing.
So, you know, that kind of a ceremony, yeah, I buy that.
That totally makes sense.
So I don't know.
Hope it helps.
Great episode.
Love you guys.
Greg, you sound like a straight fucking shooter.
And I appreciate this call.
And I'm not saying, number one, just wanted to make sure that you know, I'm not saying
that people should ride in the back of an ambulance.
I definitely am not.
do your job.
But the anger at which that man was yelling at these people who were clearly grieving,
I mean, look, I'll go one step further, Greg, and I'll say he shouldn't have let him
that far into the ambulance.
I don't think you would have done that.
I had no problem with them being kicked out, but the level of anger seemed to be too large.
And then, I don't know if we made fun of the bell ringing.
It just felt like, I mean, look, that's very much a traditional thing.
I just felt like it wasn't really a ceremony.
It just kind of felt like, I don't know if people were there mourning.
It kind of felt like, oh, shit, right, bring the bell.
Like, I get that in different scenarios.
It just felt like that was in the middle of a night, a night out.
But thank you, Greg.
I appreciate all that you do.
And thank you for your service.
All right, next up, Jake from Peoria, Illinois.
Hi, this is Jake.
This question is about the character of Sally, the young guy.
that's part of the group.
Why do you think they didn't just have him die?
You know, when he had that awful accident,
I assumed that he was going to die
and they would all feel like the stakes were getting higher.
I was really surprised.
I don't really understand why they had him live
unless it was supposedly for a sequel or something.
Anyway, that's my question.
And then with regards to extreme movies,
you should cover on the show,
Vertical Limit, Chris O'Donnell, Scott Glenn,
Rock County movie from 2000 is just,
it's a classic.
Yeah.
I mean, why are we doing it?
It's not a kid's movie.
We don't need it to like come back in a sequel.
I think that whenever you kill a main character,
it's hard to kind of like laugh at the end.
Like that final moment in the movie is like,
ha ha, yeah.
You know, so I feel like they couldn't really do it.
And it's a cheat.
Absolutely.
All the good guys have to win, you know.
And I think that when you go to like a movie like Speed
and Jeff Daniels eats it in the beginning,
you know, you can have that,
which is like, oh, we barely knew them.
But you can't like live a whole movie and then kill somebody.
And this time in action movies, you know, I mean, maybe Predator is the example that kind of transcends it.
But that's even earlier.
I think you're right.
It's a cheat.
He should have died.
It would have been better.
And I love this recommendation of Vertical Limit.
We're getting a lot of great recommendations.
Scott is going through them right now.
And let's go to Matt from Richmond, Virginia.
Hey, Jason, Paul, and June, this is Matt.
I just finished listening to the Drop Zone episode,
and I wanted to bring something to everyone's attention as a correction.
The reason why Wesley Snitch doesn't have his car midway through
is because he sold it because Yancey Butler's character
says she needs like $15,000 in her own plane.
And so that's why he holds up that lot of cash when she's like,
what happened to your car.
But anyway, great show, great work, keep it up, and thanks.
Okay, it makes sense.
This movie works.
Thank you, Matt, for listening very closely.
Did not understand that.
And I feel like it could have probably used another line in there to just a, well, I guess not.
Who cares?
I just thought he had that money.
I thought like he got that from the government.
But he wasn't working for the government.
So, of course, Matt, you watched the movie the right way.
Thank you, Matt.
And again, it's probably because you are connected to this as a resident of Richmond, Virginia.
All right.
And next up is Ketron.
Hi, Paul.
just wanted to give a call for the first time, even though I've been listening to y'all for however long y'all
have been doing it. I just wanted to give a little context about the movie Drop Zone, which I just listened to.
I actually was sort of tangentially involved in the kind of skydiver subculture, because in high school,
I was best friends with a fourth generation skydiver.
And so I would go to the drop zone with her and her family.
And here's what I'll say.
As someone who spent a lot of time on drop zones, I've never been skydiving.
It's not really something where you want to see how this sausage is made.
You know, it's kind of a lawless culture.
and becomes even more lawless once that beer sign gets flipped on at 5 o'clock,
and those are the same people packing your parachute the next morning.
So yes, there is kind of an entire subculture.
There are teams, there are sports, and everyone has a little bit of a death wish.
All the respect in the world to that entire lifestyle, met a lot of cool people.
But it's not for me.
So, yeah, that's a little bit about the skydiving subculture that I found myself a part of.
Whoa.
Wow.
Whoa.
Yow.
This, you, whoa, you blew my mind.
I have nothing to say, but wow.
I love this.
I love the sons of anarchy nature of this world.
I kind of wanted more of that.
I feel like we got that in the Gary Busey world, but I don't feel like we really got that.
I mean, I guess it was a little bit here and there.
I love it.
I'm in.
You killed it.
I have nothing to say more than like, thank you for sharing.
So cool.
I want to hear more about it, honestly.
And I also just want to say thank you to everybody who is using our brand new voice mailbox.
You all sound great.
This is the new thing that we've been doing.
It's speakpipe.com slash HDTGM.
And it's easy because you don't have to call enough.
anymore you have to do is just go to speakpipe.com slash htgm and you can record on your phone you can
record on a computer whatever you do we just love it and we're getting so many more calls because it's
easier and i'm so mad that it took us so long to do this anyway um look the reason why we can't include
all the calls by the way is because we need to show some love to our discord now too but now that the
calls are taken over who knows you know we'll go back and forth anyway uh we're going to get to the
discord's comments because they are quite intense in just a moment right after
this. All right, it is now time to hear from our Discord. Brownie writes to answer June's question
about whether skydiving has competitions. Yes, they do. We have world championships every two years and
nationals yearly. We have competitions for formation speed, artistic and accuracy to name a few. Also moving
around and free for all is very easy. And yes, you can speed up and slow down to catch up with others
within reason. And for the formation diving, we have a camera flyer that jumps with us to film how the
formation appears from above. Ground to air judging was on its way out in the 80s.
Thank you, Brownie. All right. I believe that that was the one part of the movie that I had no
problem believing. Dr. Guts 1003 writes, at the end of the film, Wesley Snipes knows the building
that Garrett Busey and his team are going to attack. So why not alert the people in the building
ahead of time and have them bring extra security? Well, Dr. Guts, because Wesley was not working for
any government organization. He was just a layperson. And I guess, you know, you can't call in those
calls if you're a layperson. I mean, also, I think he, you know, look, this guy wants the adrenaline
rush. He wants to be able to take down this crime syndicate by himself. He doesn't need backup.
All in AIDS is his backpack with his shoot in it. Anyway, John Steele, what do you got?
John Steele writes when Yancey Butler sneaks on the bad guy's plane, there is a sticker next to her
that reads white men and women can jump.
For people that get the Wesley Snipes reference,
this is pretty great.
For other people like my wife,
who has no idea what it means,
it can be a little strange.
And John Steele did include a image of that.
I did not see that in the movie.
Oh my gosh.
And John Steele continues to point out
that also Selly, the young mechanic,
who gets his shoot sabotage,
was played by Cori Nemek,
who played the titular role in Parker Lewis Can't Lose.
Oh, I love Parker Lewis Can't Lose.
I didn't recognize him.
I'm still just obsessed with that bumper sticker.
Should we make that like a shirt?
White men and women can jump?
I think that that is kind of funny.
Let me know.
Let us know in the Discord.
We haven't been making too many new shirts lately.
Besides our tribute Averal shirt, maybe we need some more.
We've been talking about him, but we just have not executed any of them.
Amani Taylor, 7280, writes,
I think the two female leads were supposed to look alike to show the bad guys were trying to replace Yancey Butler with a similar type.
That also explains why the female villain died in the copy machine to show the battle between copy versus the original.
Oh, damn.
Oh, no, you didn't.
No, you didn't, Amani.
Amani bringing the fucking heat.
Okay, wow.
Yes, love this.
Oh, man.
You know what?
I mean, I want to, I'm going to hold on to it.
We have one more comment.
Sean McBee writes right after Busey flies the guy into the power lines.
He says the following.
Cool move.
You see that 9-11 is not going to work for him.
What you just saw there can happen to any one of you.
Now I thought hearing a hijacker speak the words,
now 9-11 isn't going to work for him about a now-dead hijacker.
It was so jarring that I went back twice to make sure I heard it right.
Then I turned on the subtitles and realize that Gary Busey is trying to say 911,
but he says it as 9-11.
and wow, I can't believe I missed that.
Whoa, oh my God.
Well, you know what?
Sean McBee, you kind of proved me right and wrong here
because I was just about to give this week's winner to Amani.
But then you come in with this clip about 9-11,
and then I'm like, well, wait a second.
Have we forgotten about Ketron?
Or what about Greg from Montana?
It's so many people. Sylvia, who brought up the missing bodies. I mean, this has been an all-star week.
But I have to say, I got to say, I'm going to go with my gut. Amani Taylor, 7282.80, you are our winner.
And since you watch Drop Zone, you know that the characters had cool skydiver nicknames like Swoop and Sully and Deuce and Deputy Dog, just to name a few.
Well, your winner's prize is that I will be giving you your official skydiving nickname.
Okay, so Amani, your skydiving nickname will be Xerox.
Oh, I like it.
Yo, what's up, Xerox?
I like this.
I feel like this is a good look for you, Amani.
All right.
So, welcome to the game.
Xerox, you are this week's winner.
And for all of you listening,
who might be jealous,
I didn't give you a cool skydiving nickname,
you can try your luck next episode
by submitting your corrections and omissions on our Discord
or by leaving us a voicemail at speakpipe.com slash HDTGM.
Now, just before Jason pops on to chat with me, I have to remind you to tune into our classic episodes.
We re-release those every Tuesday.
This week's classic episode was The Wow, Wild West with guest Kevin Smith.
And next week's will be the 2003 film Daredevil with special guest Ed Brewbaker.
So keep on checking out all of our replays of classic episodes every Tuesday.
Now, without any further ado, it is time to welcome Jason for Little Just Chat.
Bears in love! Play us in!
Jason, two friends talk.
Jason, we are gearing up for summer.
Summer plans are on the horizon.
Summer movies are coming out.
Very excited about that.
What are you most excited for summer movie?
Like summer movie Blockbuster,
what do we got this year?
We've got a couple of big ones.
I got to tell you the one that I'm most intrigued by.
I don't even know if you know.
Because, yes, the Odyssey, 100%.
Spider-Man brand-new day.
Absolutely.
you know,
Grogoo,
I'm ready.
Avengers,
Dooms Day.
Oh, that's,
is that Christmas,
I think.
Oh, is that Christmas?
Yeah, yeah, yeah,
that's Christmas.
Yeah, yeah, okay, forget it,
forget it.
Here's the one that I'm excited about.
Have you heard about
the sex purge movie?
No.
So, okay,
so the idea is that you can't have sex
out of marriage
in this society.
I have heard about this.
Okay,
one night a year.
A rom-com.
A rom-com.
Yes, yes, yes.
And I was like,
this is,
there was something about it where I was like, oh, I just love this idea as a rom-com because it kind of feels a little bit like before sunrise or before sunset.
It's going to be like, it's not, there's no horror element to it, but it's a world in which you can only have one night stands and on this one night.
But I think is it only for single people?
Or is that it or something like that?
You can't have sex out of wedlock except for one night.
That's it.
That's what I think it is.
Yeah.
Great setup.
Great setup. That seemed really good to me. I don't know why. I was like...
I'm interested in that because it's a cool setup. I remember liking who was in it.
Is it Callum Turner and... Callum Turner and Monica Barbaro. Yes, great.
Two young actors who I'm super into. I don't know if they're Geek Squad or not, but...
I mean, yeah, we'll see. We'll see. This may make a... It's called One Night Only, One Night Only.
Yeah, I'm very... Like, the trailer is pretty cool, and it's also being...
I don't call it buried, but it's being placed in the August slot.
Because the August slot to me is where you get to do the cooler movies.
Like the more interesting ones.
It's like, okay, we've been through all the blockbusters.
What do we got here?
I'm excited for that.
I'm excited for the new Boots Riley movie.
I love boosters.
I cannot wait.
I'm such a Boots Riley fan.
I think he's absolutely fantastic.
So that's one that I'm like so excited about.
Oh, me too.
And I got to say, I mean, he to me is somebody who his bro,
brain works in a very different way and not in a way like where uh you can say like you know
oh they'll make a great like Christopher Nolan thinks of movies in these great but like I feel like
his version of the world like I am a Virgo the seven foot tall or the giant it's like there's
there's a visual language that he uses that no one else does uh I don't know if you saw a couple
weeks ago but the they gave out free gas for I love boosters no they're like a pico and
Western here like it was part of the promotion and it turned out to be uh uh
A nightmare. You should not be giving out free gas at a time when gas is this expensive.
The gas is out there pumping gas did not work out well.
Do you think we will be doing Masters of the Universe?
Well, this is a question of a lot of people. Having covered the Dolph Longgren one,
yes. I've watched the trailer for this new one. I was not, it made me nervous.
It's a little Barbie, right? It's a little Barbie, yes. Were you a master's a,
of the universe, like as a kid, cartoon fan?
100%.
Okay, okay.
Were you not?
I was not.
I was just a little older, so it didn't hit me right, you know?
I will say this.
People have reached out to me to say, I can't wait till you do this.
Some people have also reached out to me, said, I've seen it.
Can't wait until you do this.
So I, uh, okay.
So either way, I am excited.
Like, I am a big believer of shut your brain off summer.
Let me go.
And let me sit back and enjoy whatever you got.
Like, I'm sure that if I can enjoy that like a Gerard Butler action movie, I'll be very, very happy.
I'll be thrilled.
Oh, I agree 100%.
And that, you know, I love a dumb blockbuster.
Oh, yeah.
I mean, I hope it's good enough to be fun and dumb.
Yeah.
What I worry is that it will try to be too serious and that will be the thing that will.
And it won't work.
Yes, that's my concern as well.
Now, have you heard this thing?
I don't know.
I'm not saying anything more than what I understand it to be.
But that potentially, Stephen Spielberg has made a sequel to Close Encounters with Disclosure Day.
That's what I've heard as well, but I don't know how much that is true or is that just, is this a actual sequel or is this a spiritual sequel?
I'm curious.
Yes.
the way that I understand it is, there are similarities.
So in the sense of that happened, and this is happening in the same world.
So it's not like there's not a new build of aliens.
There's not a new, like, so it's, it's just, it's, it's more in the continuity of the world where that did happen.
Exactly.
So it, so I think, and which I think is the right way to do it, I hope, I think.
I'm curious.
I mean, conceptually, I love that as an idea.
I love the idea of making, telling new stories inside of the world of old stories we know without it being uniquely tethered to.
Like what I wouldn't want is for like Richard Dreyfus to show up.
Well, that's definitely don't need that.
That's not at all what I want.
I don't need Mr. Holland in this at all.
No, and I also feel he's not fun.
He's not fun anymore.
Dreyfus is not fun anymore.
No, we don't need to see.
We don't need it.
The other one that I'm actually,
I'll give you one that I saw and one that I'm excited for.
One that I saw early on,
and I know it's only gotten better and better,
but when I saw it, it was great,
is the new David Wayne movie,
which is the Celebrity Sex-Tep movie,
or Sex Pass.
It's a Hall Pass.
Yes. The Hall Pass movie.
Is it good?
So I saw the very first friends and family screening.
It was in David's Living Room for,
I would say 10 people max.
Oh, wow.
And it worked brilliantly.
Oh, cool.
And I believe they even did some reshoots after it.
But like taking it at just face value, watching it, it is great.
Very much in the vein of wet hot.
Oh, that makes me happy.
Yeah, it's really, really good.
And the other one that I'm excited about or I'm interested in, because I think you and I, we talk about this a lot.
But the Supergirl.
Oh, yeah.
Tom King Supergirl?
Yes.
That's what I'm excited about.
The Tom King.
Supergirl makes me pumped in everything that I've seen so far.
I'm like, this feels right.
Looks great.
I'm like, I'm trying to also be like tamp my excitement down.
Yes, I agree.
And this is coming from like I very much enjoyed the Superman movie.
Yes, sure.
Is it last year or two years ago?
Yeah.
I very much enjoyed James Gunn's Superman movie.
I've rewatched it.
I think it's terrific.
But this looks awesome.
In a way that I was like, fuck, I'm excited about this.
Well, this is the thing that I think it was hard in a way.
Like James Gunn has done a really impossible task, right?
He has the peacemaker, which is just fantastic, right?
Just nailing it.
I think then he, you know, introduces Superman, introduces a world,
gives us enough of it that it's an entertaining movie.
I saw it twice in the theater.
I'm all on board.
Great.
But now it feels like the gates are open.
Gates are wide open, and it's like from what I've seen about Clayface, which looks great.
Also looks great.
And weird.
It's like, I feel like there's going to be.
And that's what I think is great about James Gunn, is that he goes like, m'r, right.
Like his own sensibility is all over the place, which is great.
Which is good.
And I love that his curiosity and his willingness to let other creators come in and interpret some of these characters differently is fantastic.
Like that's what's exciting about the Clayface thing.
I'm still in the bag for Matt Reeves' Batman,
even though I know that's not going to be the Batman of James Gunn's DCU.
But I'm nonetheless, I'm excited for that.
Let me tell you something, Jason.
Again, I can't.
Paul, will you please tell me?
I got to tell you.
I know a little bit about what's going on on that.
Oh, okay, cool.
And all I'm going to say is, like, jaw a gape in just what they're talking about doing.
I was like, wait, what?
It was nothing.
that was specific to the thing, but just an overall tonal idea for how they're continuing that
makes me so excited. And I think that that is the promise of the premise that the Joker was
supposed to be, which is like, oh, we can also live in this world where it's like, it's like one-off,
it's like one-shots. It's like, we can do this thing and it's not connected here, but it also
feels like, oh, but as a fan, I'm going to want both of these things. They're doing it.
Yeah, good, because that's what we want.
Like, it doesn't all have to be the same story.
Let there be elseworld stories.
Let there be one-shots.
Let there, like, if you want it to feel like comics, then do it all the way.
And because not all comics are all part of the same shared multiverse.
There are constantly stories being told all over the place, you know.
That's why I think that Wonder Man clicked over for so many people because it's like, oh, oh, this is just a
show that takes place in a world that we have a shared knowledge of, but it has nothing to do with.
That show can be watched without anything.
Oh, yeah.
You don't have to know anything about Wonder Man or any of the previous MCU properties.
You can just watch Wonder Man on its own and have a blast watching Yehya and Sir Ben Kingsley go back and forth in dialogue that is absolutely hilarious.
fantastic.
Yeah.
And heartbreaking.
Really, really well done.
I'm so excited they're actually going to make a second season of that.
So that is, that's great.
Great news for cool shows.
Have I talked to you about the fact that I am now for the very first time in my life?
I am about to finish season three of my very first watchthrough of the X-Files.
Whoa.
Have we talked about this?
here's the headline, Paul.
And I don't know if you're an X-Files fan.
I am.
X-Files is fantastic.
Yes.
In a very embarrassing way, there are two properties that I somehow that I dismissed and never got into.
And in the last couple of years, I've now devoured.
The first was Star Trek the next generation, which I only had like a cursory understanding of
and now have watched all of and think is phenomenal.
Amazing.
And now the X-Files, which is terrific.
The X-Files to me is there are these shows that you go back and go,
oh, they set the tone for everything that I like, they said that they did.
So much.
They really, really did it.
And I would imagine that watching it now, similarly to Lost,
is a more enjoyable experience because at the time, you know,
the show gets started.
It's really great.
And the episodes are really good.
But then it was like, you get caught up in the main story.
And then there were the Monsters of the Week story.
And people are like, I don't want a monster of the week story.
I want the main story.
And they were like, okay, well, they're taking a longer time.
They're getting famous.
It was like there's a lot of bumpy roads to get to the ending of it, which goes into the movies.
But, man, it never faltered in quality.
It's a blast.
One of the things I'll say is I started it by watching the Monster of the Week episodes.
Oh, yeah.
There's a tab on.
It's very Doctor Who.
Yes.
That's exactly what it is.
It's exactly.
And that's been what has been the, I didn't know it was like Doctor Who.
And I love that about it.
And so like there's a, there's like on, I guess it's Disney or whatever.
You can organize it.
You can, there's a tab that's just Monsters of the Week episodes.
Oh, great.
There's a tab that's the whole.
It's dynamite.
I've been really loving that.
And then I am continuing my endeavor into watching anime.
I love this.
Season 2 is now over and is going to be unequivocally my favorite show of the year.
Jiu-Jitsu Kizen, incredible show, unbelievable action sequences.
And then the new show, Witch Hat Attelier.
This is, wow.
I am 53.
Here's the thing.
These shows are dynamite.
Sentenced to being a hero, demon hunter, hunter times hunter.
These are all incredible shows that are so fun, so funny, and so immersively satisfying to dig into these weird worlds.
Absolutely a blast.
Well, this is the, you know, again, I'm still behind on entering into that world, but I, all my favorite people that I trust their opinions of.
It's a never-ending grouping of shows.
There's so much of it.
There's genuinely too much anime to get into.
but these, I purposefully have been choosing shows that I read about that are meant to be great,
but that are also not like, there's 11 seasons of it.
You know what I mean?
Like I said, freer in season two.
Sentenced to being a hero, just finished season one.
Jiu-Jitsu Kizen, I think, only has three seasons maybe.
These are great series.
Well, now, Jason, I have to tell you one thing, you know, another talk about never-ending or exploding worlds.
You know, a very good friend of mine, I could talk about it now, has been tasked with continuing the Fast and the Furious universe for television.
Wait, who is your friend because I saw it announced.
Who also is behind Rockford Files.
He's done them both.
The Boreannis Rockford Files?
Yes.
So he is, Rockford Files is going to go as a mid-season.
And, and a P.I's are back, baby.
PIs are back in a big way.
Rockford Files, I know that our friends Dan Gore and Luke Deltredici are doing the Jake Johnson.
Yes.
P.I. comedy P.I. Show.
With Scott Speedman.
Yep.
With Keith.
Oh, my God.
Keith David.
So funny.
So good.
The Scott Speedman one is up now.
There's like a ton.
We're back.
We're back with private investigators.
And, and you know, look, you and I love, we have a soft spot for Rockford.
So Rockford, great cast, really fun world.
I'm curious.
I'm so curious about Rockford.
I really, I want to know how Boreannis is going to do this.
I'm very curious.
All right.
Well, then again, let me talk to you outside of school and say, or I could say,
exactly the way you would want him to play it.
Great.
He plays it like James Garner.
Good.
Good.
Like, he's funny.
He's light, but he's also able to do the heavier stuff of the show.
Like that feels like it has weight.
Because I was like, he'll definitely be able to nail all.
of like the heavier, like procedural stuff to the, to it.
But does he have that light touch?
Does he have that twinkle in his eye that I do feel like he had when he was Angel?
Well, that's what I was feeling.
And that when I was watching, I was like, oh, he's hitting this sweet spot, which is
intimidating, but likable.
And when Angel got into the more detective of the week kind of stuff, it was the similar
vibe.
And I think it's, you know, I just think it's a great, it's a great.
It's awesome. I'm excited for that. I think that that will be really fun. Great. But I will say, you know, the Fast and Furious World. So it was announced, it was announced like, you know, so he's been working on both of these things for a very long time.
And then, but Fast and Furious kind of got added to the upfront slate and it was like, here we go. You're going with that one as well. And then it was announced a couple days after that. There are three other ones. There are going to be four. Four Fast and Furiouses? Yes. All within the.
the different worlds.
I know where my friend's show takes place,
and it's a great spot for it to take place,
and it's, and it feels unique,
it doesn't feel like territory
that's being tread in the films at all.
And very much excited about that.
But I'm like, wow, so there's a world in which
in the next year, we're going to have four,
you know, in the universe of,
of Fast and Furious.
That is fascinating.
Yeah.
I love that.
I'm curious.
I hope, I mean, listen, I'm all in.
So, like, sign me up.
Yeah, I'll tell you the one that, the one that he has been doing, again, I can't talk about it, but I can say, wow.
If you were to say, like, pitch in this world, he did a great pitch in this world.
I love it.
And I think what it will feel like, to your point about PIs being back, I think it will feel like, like a show like Night Rider.
Yeah.
The old car type.
shows where it's like
Hardcastle and McCormick.
Yeah, they're not detectives, but
they're driving around in cars. There's a little
bit of illegal stuff, but yeah, you know,
look, and if anything, we
hopefully will maybe get that
movie made. I mean, I know Vin Diesel
threatens it every couple of minutes, but
you know, I'm so
curious. Oh my God, I love this.
I can't wait to hear off-air
more specifics. I will tell you,
yeah, I will tell you, it is
fun.
There's two really great new music-based podcasts that I'm going to shout out.
One of them just started, so there's only a couple of episodes in.
It's called Hit That Perfect Beat, the London Records story.
And it's just a great docu-series about London Records and each of the iterations of London Records
and all of the kind of new wave bands and the stuff that are from that era of music in the 80s and stuff like that.
Really great.
But London Records.
predates that. So it's a lot of history, but it's also just great interviews with musicians that are,
for me, I love, you know. I'm just looking at the history of London records and it's like, wow,
it is really, really, really interesting. It's like, yeah, there's a lot of. Well, it like exists as like a
part of Deca records for a while and it's, they sign the stones and they don't sign the Beatles and it's all
this interesting stuff. And then it kind of dies and then it kind of comes back later as this other
entity that has all this like a lot of super popular new wave and postwave bands and stuff.
That's so cool. I love it.
Really great.
That and Jad Ebumerod, who was the host of Radio Lab for many years, put out a podcast last
year that I never shouted out but have been meaning to, which is all about Nigerian musician
Phala Kuti, which is incredible.
I mean, like, Phela is absolutely one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century.
And it is a deep, deep, deep dive into Fela, both musically, politically, in every way he is so significant and so impactful as a person in Africa, in the world, in music, in politics.
He's, and just as a character, he's super interesting.
And Jad does an incredible job deep diving into Falakuti.
So, it's called Falakuti Fear No Man.
It's a limited series, so you can check it out.
It's absolutely dynamite.
You know, I always have a hard time like, like, yeah, I've been trying very hard to listen to different music, find some stuff because I felt myself getting in my own rut of things. And I got to tell you, I fell in love with this guy, McKinley Dixon.
Okay.
Okay.
Okay.
Okay.
Okay.
And I felt, you know, I just was like very excited because I was like, oh.
And he's a, he's like, and that level of like, he is popular, but I don't know if he is like hit full full mainstream.
Sure.
And he's on tour, but I would say, if you like hip hop, check out this guy.
He's just great sound, a really, really great sound.
And, yeah.
There's a couple of records that I'll shout out just because I feel like they've been really a part of my spring so far.
One of them is called Vila, or VIA, maybe.
It's Fabiano Do Nassimento.
It's a Brazilian record that is so beautiful.
V-I-L-A is what it is.
Okay. And it's been, I've been playing it constantly on repeat this spring. And in fact, there's a song called Spring Theme that is very on brand for the season. Absolutely terrific. There has been, for the first time in I think 13 years maybe or longer, new music from the band Boards of Canada, who are one of my favorite electronic, like hypnotic, weird, unknowable kind of bands of,
that's just two brothers who make incredible music and have for years,
but they have these long,
fallow periods where they don't release anything.
And suddenly a couple of weeks ago,
weird stuff started popping up online,
and people were like,
wait a minute,
is there new boards of Canada?
And it turns out,
yes, a new album called Inferno is coming.
Or by now that you're listening to this,
it very well may be out.
That's been very exciting to me.
New Greg Mendez,
new Beth Orton,
an artist who, again, hasn't made a record in quite some time,
and who I just absolutely adore,
and her new music is fantastic.
I love that.
I've shouted out this guy before.
Again, it's like, so much of what I'm enjoying right now
is stuff that is relaxing, and I've been on the road.
Yeah.
So much of, like, what I want is something that's going to calm me down a little bit.
And I always find Alabaster de Plume music incredibly,
beautiful and calming
and he's got a new record
that's just come out that's absolutely fantastic
really really
beautiful beautiful saxophone
music not jazz necessarily
but not not jazz if that makes sense
I also have been listening to this band called Mama
which is just kind of like more like an
indie rock kind of like I like that
kind of female fronted
like indie rock sound
and yeah this band has been really fun
I'm newer on my journey
into them, but I found them, again, through just a little bit, you know, hit and miss on Spotify,
and Mama has been a big hit for me.
Ooh, I love that.
Great.
So there we go.
Good.
Ooh, a music corner.
I'm trying, you know, I'm trying to keep.
No, there's been some good stuff.
This singer-songwriter, Alice Costello has put out great new music.
This band, the Montvails, I'm really enjoying.
Yeah, there's a bunch of good new stuff that's been really exciting and really fun to put together
for a spring list of being like, hey, it's spring.
Let's get out there.
I like it.
It's bopping.
All right.
Well, Jason, so much here.
Can I plug something that I, that's a me plug?
And wait, did I already plug this?
Forgive me.
Scott will tell me if I did.
I was a guest on the Hank Green show on YouTube.
Ask Hank anything.
And it was fantastic.
A clip of this.
We're about asking if you should wipe your butt.
Is that it?
Asking if you should wipe your pet's butt.
The question was, hey, shouldn't we be wiping our pets butts
after they take a shit before they come and sit on our pillows and sit next to us on the couch?
Like, what are we doing?
There's turds back there.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
And then that's just one of many questions I asked him over a very rambling two-hour conversation
that was delightful and wonderful.
And he made such a concerted effort to answer all my nonsense questions.
It's on YouTube.
I think it's called Ask Hank Anything.
So I truly check it out.
I think you guys will enjoy it.
I love it.
And one of the questions you did ask,
are there ways you can retrieve lost memories?
Yeah.
I was like,
I have such trouble remembering stuff.
I have such a bad memory for my,
in that way that I feel like you are so good
and have such wonderful recall to tell a story.
You know,
not just to tell a story,
oh, this happened,
but to tell the truly like the specifics of a story.
You know, I don't have that Mary Lou Henner disease,
but every now and then it does seem like it's not a burden to her,
and that's what it's so fascinating.
It's like, she can marry Louender,
be like, oh, yeah, you were wearing that red shirt,
and you had on the blue Mets cap,
and it was like, to be able to see.
It's called autobiographical memory.
Oh, wow.
Is what it's called, and it's incredible.
And I have, like, the opposite of that.
I'm like, well, June is like that as well.
Like, June has a great David Fincher story,
and we were talking about David Fincher the other night,
and I was like, well, you should tell their story.
And she was like, I don't remember what do you mean the story?
I was like, you have a great David Fincher story.
And she's like, no, I don't, what are you talking about?
And then I told her story from her telling me her story.
Yeah, because now you keep her stories.
I kept her story.
Yeah.
It is.
It's like one of those things that's always so funny, like when we talk because I'm like,
you, you were the one who told me this.
But at least I'm glad that one of us is remembering it all.
And the best one that was articulated kind of perfectly.
And June had texted me, she said, have you watched Widows Bay?
Now, I had told her I watch it.
I want to watch it with her.
I think she will love it.
It's so good.
And she's like, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
But she wrote me this very impassioned thing about how I have to watch it with her.
She's so excited to introduce it to me.
And I'm like, not only have I talked to you about it.
I've offered us to watch it multiple times.
And you said no.
And then what June was able to do is hire a gospel singer to take our texts and transcribe it into gospel music, which I'll send you.
Oh, that's very funny.
It is.
It's pretty great.
Yes.
All right.
Jason, we will talk soon.
Can't wait.
All right.
Thank you, Jason.
A reminder, you can see Jason and I in New York, June 11th, 12th, and 13th.
We are at the Del Close Marathon.

big shows, but we love when we can live stream so you can watch us.
I think it's going to be a blast at DCM.
All right, so, without any further ado, it is time to announce next week's movie.
Next week, I'll be going from screams in flight to screams of fright.
That's right.
We'll be watching the 1978 Supernatural Horror Movie, The Manitoo, starring Tony Curtis, Susan
Strasbourg, Michael Ansara, and Burgess Meredith.
Here's IMDB's breakdown to the plot, a psychic see.
girlfriend finds out that a lump on her back is a growing reincarnation of a 400-year-old
demonic Native American spirit. Matt Brunson from film frenzy says,
The Manitou is absurd, insane, and yeah, kind of awful, but there's nevertheless a high
watchability factor. Let's take a listen to the trailer.
The Manitou, starring Tony Curtis.
John!
Michael Ansara.
What is a white man want?
with Indian magic, Susan Strasberg.
The innocent people, tormented by terror, threatened by the unknown,
trapped by an ancient horror.
The manor tool, rated Biji.
If you want to watch the Manitou, you can stream it for free on Zumu Play.
Don't know what that is, but you can stream it for free there,
or you can rent it on Prime Video and Apple TV.
