Season 7, Episode 10.
What more, Viajeroz?
Welcome back to immersive Spanish.
I'm already in the Aeropuerto International, Jose Maria Cordova.
I'm already at Jose Maria Cordova International Airport, just outside Medellin.
After one last drive up and out of the valley, I'm sitting at the gate with my backpack, my boarding pass, and a very overpriced bottle of water.
My Vuelo to Santa Marta sale in a few minutes.

I'm about to eat. Estoy a
point to abortar. I'm about to board.
It means I'm at the point of. I'm at the point of eating.
I'm at point of saying. I'm at the point of leaving. I'm about to leave.
Anyway, Santa Marta is the first step. From there, I'll make my way up towards Minka.
So even though my boarding pass says Santa Marta,
this is the beginning of my journey into the Colombian jungle.
I must say it does feel strange to be leaving Medellin.
This city has given me aripas, salsa, waterfalls, a terrifying number of hills,
and some unforgettable conversations.
And if I'm being completely honest,
there is one conversation in particular that keeps replaying in my head.
Guys, I'm thinking in Lola.
I'm thinking about Lola.
She'll be a minka in two days, and she gave me her number just in case I wanted to meet up.
Of course, I haven't messaged her yet.
I'm being calm, relaxed, and mysterious.
Or at least, that's what I'm calling opening WhatsApp for the fourth time in 10 minutes and then doing absolutely nothing.
The truth is,
I want to
I want to see her
I want to see her again
now
Volver a verb
means to do something again
Volver A
means to see again
Volver to see again
and because I'm talking about Lola
Volveraverla means to see her again
Right, we should have a few minutes before boarding,
so let's kill some time with a quickfire Spanish challenge.
I'll give you the English, you say the Spanish before I do.
Ready?
Number one, how would you say I need to book a flight?
Necessito reservar a wholo.
Necessito.
Reservar a, wuelo.
Number two, how would you say a window seat?

Well, not quite.
I'm group four, but naturally, almost everyone has stood up anyway.
How did you do in the quickfire round?
If you got three or more, very nice.
And if you got all five, well, you are officially more prepared for this flight than I am.
Let's grab a couple of phrases from that announcement while we wait for the queue to move.

And I must say, I'm genuinely delighted about that,
because the views as we leave these mountains, they should be spectacular.
Invitamos to aborting to the passengers of the group 3 and 4.
That's me. Group 4.
We're going to abortar.

me. Honestly, every airport, every time. Although, to be fair, that was quick.
The agent was friendly enough and to be fair, we've just been handed some excellent travel Spanish.
Well, I'm walking towards a plane now, so let's break that exchange down before I reach my seat.
First, the agent told me,
has been selected for a revision alliatoria.
You've been selected for a random search.
A.
Cido.
Seleccionado.
Para.
Una.
Revision.
Aliaatoria.
One revision is a check or inspection.
And aleatoria means random.
Fun fact.
I first learned the word alliaatoria on Spotify.
When you have a random shuffle.
Alliaoria.
So, another.
reason to change your phone settings to Spanish. Anyway, the guy then said,
Vassia los bolcillos. Bacier los bolzillos. Empty your pockets.
Los bolzios are pockets. Next, sace el portatil. Take out the laptop. Sake
el portatil. The useful verb here being sacar to take out.
out.
Saker.
I did ask the gentleman if I had to remove my enormous collection of cables, and he replied,
No, it'sa faulta.
No.
Ase, faulta means there's no need.
And that is a brilliant phrase to recognize.
No has a faulta.
There's no need.
And finally,
Puede guard their things and continue.
You can
guardar
sus
things
and
continue
you can put your things
away and continue
Oh
and the phrase
I muttered
under my breath
was
Why
I'm always
me
because
I
always
me
to come
a me
Why is it always me?
Literally
why is it always
my turn. Why does it always touch me?
This is a useful phrase for airports, delayed trains.
Whenever you want to have a little whinge.
Why always me?
Right, I'm at the plane door.
Well-as tardes.
Bienvenito.
Well,as.
Pardon.
Where is the 129A?
At the front.
To the left.
It's the ultimate file.
perfecto
thanks
al fondo
all the way at the back
of course it is
this is the awkward part of boarding a plane
when you are tall and carrying a backpack
turn sideways
avoid everyone's elbows
apologize to row 18
nearly knock out row 21
with your water bottle
26
27
28
we are. 29A.
Ventinevea.
No.
No, no, no.
How can this be? There is no window.
I'm standing beside seat 29A,
my beautiful, carefully selected window seat.
And where's the window?
Just a completely solid white wall for goodness sake.
No, there is ventana.
Solo I only a pane blanca.
I said, no ventana.
Only there is no window.
There is only a white wall.
Maybe I've made a mistake.
Maybe this is Road 28 and the real Road 29 is hidden behind the toilet.
Let's ask.
Pardona, this is the fil a 29.
Yes, sir, 29a.
But is that I reserve a
a seat of
a
window.
In this
field
no
have
ventania
for the
structure
of the
plane.
So
is a
as a
seat?
It's
could
say.
I can
change
to
be a
asient?
The
world
is a
full of
the
flight.
No
no
doesn't
nothing.
Thank
a
seat.
A
wool seat.
Not an
official
category
apparently
but I think it should be.
The crew member said,
In this fila no
ventanilla.
In this
fila,
no,
I,
ventania.
There is no window in this row.
You may hear
both ventana
and ventania
for a plain window.
Ventana and ventania.
I asked,
I asked,
seats. But I was told,
El Vuelo va geno.
The flight is for.
El Vuelo
va geno.
So, this wall and I are going to be spending some quality time together.
Right. Let's take the seat.
Okay. I'm in.
Just about.
Now, not to be that guy, but the next problem is my legs.
my knees are already touching the seat in front of me
and that seat is still completely upright so
no Tengue Espacio for Las Pjernas
I don't have any leg room
No
Tengo
Spacio
Para
Las Piernas
Literally I don't have space for my legs
So I don't have space for my legs
I'm tall and no
I don't have any leg room.
I'm tall and I don't have any leg room.
A sentence
every tool traveler should learn
before getting onto a budget flight.
So I'm alto and no
I don't have space for the piernas.
Seniors,
for favor,
abroachensse the centurons of security.
Guarden the messes
and maintain the respaldos
in position vertical
for the despeg.
That announcement said,
Abroachensé los
Sintorones de
Seguride
Fasten your seatbelts
Next time you bought a plane
in Spain or anywhere
throughout the Spanish
speaking world
Listen for that
Abroachensse
Los Sintorones
de Seguride
Fasten your seat belts
Maintengen
those respaldos
in position
Vertical
Keep your seat back
in the upright
position
Maintengen
those respalos
of spaldos in position vertical
for takeoff.
I'd like to emphasize that last part, actually.
We have not taken off.
We haven't even moved.
Ah!
My rodia!
Oh, pardon.
Le peggy?
Yes.
Just in the roadia.
Is that I'm out and no
I don't have nothing of space for the piernas.
Oh,
I'm sorry.
I'm going to put the sienta recta.
Yes, he, he, he,
for favor.
At least,
until that we're dispegues.
Claro,
Desculpe.
Oh, my goodness.
I apologize for screaming
directly into your ears,
but that seat went straight into my kneecap.
So we're still parked at the gate
and my left leg has already
experienced an emergency landing.
The passenger asked,
Le Peggay.
Le Pegue.
Did I hit you?
And I explained,
No Tengo nada de
space for las pyrnas.
No,
Tengo
nada
de
space for
las piernas.
I have no legroom at all.
Everything is fine.
I'm not angry.
My knee cap,
is considering making a formal complaint.
Okay, we're finally moving.
Usually, this is the moment when I would look through the window
and watch Medellín and the mountains disappear below me.
I can confirm that the wall remains extremely white.
Still, Medellin deserves a proper goodbye.
Thanks for todo, Medellin.
Thank you for everything, Medellin.
Thanks for all, Medellin.
and we're in the air
I can tell from the pressure in my ears
and the angle of my stomach
because I have absolutely no visual evidence whatsoever
