Welcome back to immersive Spanish.
Last time, I was chatting to some locals who told me to go and visit Montserrat, to go for a hike.
The word for hiking is...
Senderismo.
Senderismo.
To say I go hiking in Spanish, you would say...
I'm going to senderismo.
You can say,
Igo senderismo.
Ago is the first person's singular form of the verb
Aser.
Acer means to do or to make.
So,
I go means I do or I make.
Cenderismo, as we know,
refers to the activity of hiking.
So,
Ago senderismo means
I do hiking.
The day is still young, so I'm going to take the train over to Montserrat and go for a hike.
But firstly, I need to pack.
Luckily, this Airbnb has a giant cupboard full of general activity equipment that I can borrow.
There is a note from the host saying,
Toma lo quechieras.
Toma, lo que cares.
Can you guess what that means?
Toma is the imperative.
or bossy conjugation of the word to-mar.
Tomar means to take.
By taking away the final letter of R from Tomar,
we create a command.
Toma.
Toma means take.
For example,
Toma el cafe.
Take the coffee.
Lo is a pronoun that means it.
Que means what.
Finally,
Chieras is a form of the word
Kered, which means to want or to desire.
Specifically,
Kieras is used when you're talking to somebody informally,
and it means you want or you desire.
So let's bring that all together.
Take what you want.
Take it
what you want.
Or take whatever you want.
Right.
So I'm going to help myself and pack
some hiking essentials. Firstly I need a backpack to pack everything into. The word
for backpack is la mochila. Next I need a water bottle. To say a water bottle we say
a bottle of
water
one
a bottle
of
water
now
some food
which is
la
comida
la
I need food
I need food
I need food
I need
I need
I need
more specifically
nuts
Fruitos
Secos
Fruitos
Secos
This is a general term for nuts
And it translates to
Dried fruits
Fruitos
Secos
Think of those mixed packets
that we have
Which include dried raisins,
almonds,
cashews and so on
They are very high in energy
And perfect for a hike
Next, we need
bananas
bananas are
Platanos
Platanos
You can also just say
bananas
bananas
Of course we also need a map
El Mapa
So that we can
gain our bearings
We will need a compass
One Bruchola
One
Bruchula
The first aid kit is
El Botequin
di Primeras Auxilios.
The Botequin
de
Primeros
Auxilios.
I will also need bandages.
The bandages are
Los
Bendages.
Los
Bendahes.
A waterproof, just in case,
is
Unimpermeable.
Un impermeable.
Just remember the word impermeable in English.
It's spelled exactly the same.
It's quite sunny though, so I guess I'll more likely need a cap for my head.
A hat is a hat.
I need a hat.
Necessito a garra.
Necessi to a gorra.
One, gore.
Gloves too, just in case.
Remember the word for gloves?
Los guantes.
Los guantes.
My gloves are very comfortable.
My guantes are very comodos.
Hiking boots, these are essential.
And in Spanish, they are called
Botas de senderismo.
Botas.
De.
Cenderism.
Botas.
This means boots.
Descenderism means of hiking.
So, botas, descenderismo means boots of hiking or hiking boots.
The socks in Spanish are Los calcettines.
Los calcettines.
It's good to pack a spare pair.
sunglasses are
Gaffas de sol
Gaffas
de sol
To remember glasses
I think of the phrase
Gaffas wear glasses
referring to an old gaffer
which in English is an old-fashioned
way of saying an old man
so an old gaffer
wears gaffas
in this case he's wearing
Gaffas de sol
Some protection next
Protector Solar
Protector Solar
That's also an easy one
as it's basically saying
solar protector
But the other way round
Protector Solar
A torch or flashlight in case we get lost
would be
One Lintner
One
Linterna
This sounds
just like a lantern
lantern
lantern
what else do we need
yes a lighter
a lighter in case we need to make a fire
a lighter is
an encenderor
to remember this I think of the word
incinerator
incinerator is something that's used
to burn waste
incinerator
encendador
which is like a handheld incinerator if you will
a knife is important too
we need that
to say that in Spanish we say
an cochillo
an
coccillo
I like to remember this by thinking it almost has a
cut sound in it
a knife that cuts
coccillo
but this one is actually spelt very differently to
how it sounds. If you haven't already, why not head over to our Patreon and download the transcript
to this and every other episode to see how the words are spelt as you listen along to speed up your
Spanish learning. I'll also pack a portable charger in case my phone dies. The word for
portable charger is... Cargador portatil. Cargador portatil. One more time.
The last thing I'll pack is a whistle, which is...
One Silvato.
Un...
Silvato.
These can be very useful in case you get lost and need rescuing.
Right, now, I'm all packed.
Time to head to the station.
Oh, Maria?
Hello?
How istas?
Maria, do you go the senderism?
the senderism?
Now
I'm
to Montserrat
to
do a
come in
a
can't
come to
you're
well
I'm
can't
wait
to get to
a
house
and pack
some
and
we're
we're
we're
in this bar in
20
minutes
I'll
take
a
beer
and
I
okay
after
long
after
probably
I just
pumped into
Maria
I asked
if she
likes hiking
you
do you like the senderism?
She said yes
so I invited her
to come hiking with me
I'm going to wait for her
here while she goes home
and pack some things
I told her to go home
and pack some things
and that we will see each other
here in 20 minutes
in this bar next to the road
hola, how is ta
a mesa for one?
Si, afura,
for favor.
Grazi.
I just asked,
for a table for one.
One mesa for one.
I asked to sit outside.
Afwera.
Afwera means outside.
I'll just get a small drink while I wait.
Hello, caballero.
One cup of vino tinto, for favor.
Si, Rioja is perfect.
Grazias.
I like to use the word Cavalliero when ordering food and drinks in Spain.
drinks in Spain. It translates as gentlemen. It's just a very polite way of saying sir or
signor. Of course, if I'm being served by a woman, then I would say signora or
seorita. And that depends on her age. It can be a delicate one that.
Signorita translates to miss and signora translates to misses.
It's
Grazie.
Oh,
What is this?
I forgot.
Another reason why I love Spain.
They have served me a tapper with my drink,
free of charge.
This time they've given me a small plate of pan with tomato
to go with my drink.
This is a traditional Spanish dish
made by grating fresh Spanish tomatoes
onto pieces of baguette,
with some of that delicious Spanish olive oil.
Or, as we've learned,
Cete de oliva.
This stuff is good.
It's really good.
Ooh, that was delicious.
Ah, caballero, la Quenta, for favor.
Muchisima grazias.
Very amabler.
Oh my goodness.
It's only four euros for a glass of wine
and a delicious tapper.
Guys, I'm never going home.
And good timing because look,
here's Maria. There she is.
She was pretty quick.
I'll leave the money here.
Hello, signorita.
How is Maria?
We're going to the station of train?
We're going.
A billiette of the way and return to Montserrat.
For favor.
Right.
We've got our return tickets.
We cover ticket buying in great detail on our paid course which can be found on our Patreon.
Why not head over there and have a listen to that?
Right then folks, let's get on that train.
We made it.
The train takes about an hour and five minutes apparently.
Maria says she needs to send some emails for work on her phone, so she won't be very chatty for a while.
But hey, I can use this time to test you on all the hiking things I can.
