Bienvenidos de new to our podcast of immersive Spanish.
Wow.
Switching from Spanish to English, mid-sentence like that, does sound funny, doesn't it?
Regardless, welcome back.
Sorry if it sounds a bit noisy.
Hang on, let me put in my earphones.
Ah, that's better.
You see, once more, I find myself in the majestic but noisy market of La Bocaria.
Or I should say,
Me Enquenra, one more, in the Mercado de la Bocairia.
You may remember from the last episode that
Me Enquentro means I find myself.
Therefore,
I'm
Enquencro
one
more
in the
grand
Mercado
of the
boccaria
this means
I find
myself
one more
time
in the
great
market
of the
boqueria
why have
I come back
to this
market you
may be
asking
you might
remember
that we
came here
in
episode
six
well
I'm going
to try
and make
a paia
back in
my
accommodation
and of
course
this will be
a
great place
to get the ingredients.
But also, secondly,
this market isn't just a place where you buy produce.
Throughout La Bocqueria,
you will find many stalls and vendors
selling dishes, tapas,
and all kinds of delicacies.
Most of these stalls
and their family recipes
have been inherited over four or five generations.
That means you know that you're guaranteed
a good, delicious time here.
Antes de'empesa,
before beginning,
before beginning,
I'd like
to share
some
data
interesting.
I would like to share
some interesting facts.
Me
would like to
share some
those data
interesting.
First,
fact number one,
the boccaria
is the
market most
great of
the city
of Barcelona.
Did you get that?
The Boccaria is the biggest market in the city of Barcelona
Second, fact number two
The real name of the market as written in Catalan is,
and you have to bear with me because my Catalan is not very good,
Mercat de San Josep de la Bocairia
Thirdo, a third fact
It has been voted as the best market in the world
By the World Congress of Public Market
and also by CNN.
I'm going to tell you this last fact in Spanish, so listen up.
The Mercado de la boccaria receive more
than 40,000 people at the year.
I'll give you a clue.
40,000 means 40,000.
So I'll say that altogether once again.
The Mercado of the boccaria receive
more than 40,000
people
already? I'll say it in English.
The Bokaria market
receives more than 40,000 people
to the day.
So it goes about saying
the market is obviously doing
something right. And no,
it's not just tourists and travelers
that it attracts.
Locals come here for breakfast and lunch,
as well as to shop.
It's
Currently 9 a.m.
Maria, a local of Barcelona,
told me that the best time to go is early.
Well, I thought I was early,
but as you can hear,
I didn't quite beat the traffic.
Maria also gave me a list of the most famous
and highly regarded stalls throughout La Bocaria.
I'm very interested to see what all the hype is about.
So, as we say in England,
let's have a gander.
Let's have a look.
But first,
And before I forget, I need to buy all the ingredients for a paella.
Unbelievable.
As soon as you enter the market, you are flooded with an explosion of colors.
These fruit stalls truly contain all colors of the rainbow.
Mango, sandias, manzanasanasanas,
oranges, frasas, platanos.
Here I de todo.
It's no wonder the Spanish life expectancy is so high.
quality of the
food is
very
high.
The quality
of the food
is very
high.
Well,
for
to cook
a paella
I need
the
next
ingredients.
First,
I need
to buy
arouse.
Also,
I need
a sebolla
black,
the
oil of
pimenton,
a lot of
tomatoes
and what more I need?
Ah, si,
I'd rather
to buy gambas.
How many of those ingredients
did you catch in Spanish?
Let's go over them.
Rice is
The arroz.
El
Arros
Olive oil is
Aceite
of olivea.
Aceite
of olive
The Olive
Fru to the gods
if you ask me.
Paprika is pimenton.
Pimenton.
I also said, I need
Unos tomates.
Some tomatoes.
Unos.
Tomates.
Last, but definitely not least,
I said,
I should buy prawns.
Deveria
Comprar Gambas.
Deverea means I should.
Deverea
to buy gambas.
I am not
want to
cook
a
lot of
complicated.
No
I need
more
ingredients.
No
I'm
need
more
ingredients.
No
I am not
going to
need.
Well,
don't go
anywhere.
There's a
stool full
of veggie
greens.
I'll
quickly grab
what I
need.
Señor,
good
day.
How
is?
Very well, very
Sir,
me pass two tomatoes
great, for
favor?
Ah,
also,
me can
pass that
packet of
arouse?
Yes,
that packet
of arros.
Thank you.
And,
you have
an
oil,
and you?
I can
buy a
bottle
little,
for
favor.
Yes,
a
bottle
small.
No
I want
much,
just a
little,
so,
so,
the
bottle
little.
Much
thanks.
Guys,
what else
do I
need?
What more
I need?
Ah,
ha,
ha,
so I'm
forgot.
Two
sebole
blanks,
for
favor.
Perfect.
And
Pimenton,
Pimenton
also.
Sir,
the last question
you're going to
buy gambas
here
no
oh
oh
for there
well
no
no
no
I'm
to
look to
how
how cost
this
this
cost of
$12
dollars
okay
I
can
pay
with a
deal
thank
thank
so
yes
I need
a
business
I need
fantastic
I got
almost
everything
that I need
I
I even got a little bag,
One A bolzita.
I just need some prawns or gambas.
The friendly man behind the till
recommended me a seafood stall,
just at the corner.
Let's go.
I'll tell you what,
the smells here are almost overwhelming.
It's very fishy,
as you might expect from a market.
That's the main thing.
But I can also smell onion and garlic
being cooked from some of the stalls.
I can't wait.
Well,
Yeah
We already arrived
To the stool
It's intense
I can see a lot of big fish
Like swordfish
But where are
Gambas
I don't see the prawns
Veo ostracres
Veo mehiones
Veo pescado
of all type
But no veo gambas
Wait
There they are
There they are
Hello,
I mean,
Pue
Darno
Can't get me
4,000 grams of gambas.
We got the ingredients
needed for that pie.
That's all sorted.
A ver.
Let's have a read of
where Maria recommended me to check out.
Just so you know, she told me the vast majority of these stalls serve smaller portions.
Something to snack on or pick out.
In Spanish, this is known as piquear to snack.
Picar.
In Spain, la gente come a si.
A la gente le gusta piquear.
The people here like to snack.
So, Maria has to eat.
has recommended me a famous place called bar
excuse my pronunciation here
bar pinoccio
let's have a look
one thing to be aware of is that the food
bars recipes
I think the vast majority of them are all Catalan based
so don't expect to easily find this kind of stuff
in other parts of Spain
like in say Malaga or other Andalusian cities
I can even hear just as much Catalan here as I can Spanish.
Anyway, the bar Pinoccio has, according to what Maria says,
been serving breakfast and lunch here in La Bocaria since the year 1940.
Supposedly, some of the best food can be found there.
Maria has recommended me the hot chickpeas.
Apparently they don't even have menus,
so you either have to point out or explain what you want.
Ah, I think I've already walked past it. It's at the front.
I know. It's shut. Why is it shut?
Let me ask the workers next door.
Eh, pardon.
Why is it closed the bar Pinotcho?
In serious?
When do I pass that?
Oh, no.
That's treiste.
How sad.
I've just been told that this legendary stool
that was serving the Boccaria for over 80 years
has closed down earlier this year
and reopened in another part of the city.
That's a shame.
Oh well, I'd best go and check out the next place Maria recommended.
That place is called Kiosco Universal.
She said that it starts at stall number 691.
Kiosco Universal is specializes in mariscos.
Kiosco Universal.
specializes in seafood.
El bar
is specializes in marisco.
So,
specifically,
according to what Maria is written,
they specialize in
grilled seafood.
This, in Spanish,
is called
mariscoes
al-a-parilla.
Al-A-Parija
means to the grill.
Mariscos
al-A-Padilla
therefore means
seafood to the grill
or
grilled seafood.
Maria swears that the freshness of the food is what makes it so special.
Apparently it's second to none.
The two things she said that this place is known for are calamari and grilled sardines.
Calamari in Spanish are called calamares.
Los calamares.
Do you like calamare?
Do you like calamari?
Grilled sardines.
are sardinas a la paria. Sardinas. A la parilla. Well, I think I see the name. Kiosco Universal. Yes.
Wow, I can see some flames being produced. It smells divine. Kei rico. Okay, I'm going to ask for a portion of grilled sardines.
Hello
My name
Yes, my name is Kav
Yes, for favor
Las Sardinas to La Paria,
for favor
11 euros
Vale, with targeta
for favor
Okay guys, they took my name
and put me in a queue
That's a pretty efficient way of handling orders, I guess
Well, why not use this time
To go over some of the things
You would have heard
Throughout the course of this episode
I am going to test you, but seriously, don't worry if you struggle.
You can always go back and listen again until it sticks in your head.
I know it takes me a few tries.
