Starting point is 00:00:00 Episode No. Seis. The Mercado de Barcelona. Welcome back to immersive Spanish. Today, we're heading to the oldest market in Barcelona, El Mercado de la Bocaria. It has a very long history dating back to the 13th century. I'm currently in a taxi driving over Las Ramblas. I love taking taxis in Spanish-speaking countries,
Starting point is 00:00:31 as they give the perfect opportunity to practice your Spanish one and one with a native speaker. Last time you listened as we learned the basics of meeting and greeting while speaking to a beautiful Spanish girl on the beach outside of the bar. It turns out her name was Maria and we got along very well. Oh, we've arrived. Quanto costa? Okay, 8 euros. Tengue effectivo.
Starting point is 00:01:05 Grazie. Wow. There is so much to choose from. I mean, where do I even start? Let's start with some fruit. Now's a good time to learn the names of popular fruits in Spanish. To ask for some bananas, you would say, Unas Bananas, por favor.
Starting point is 00:01:38 Bananas can be referred to as bananas. Or platanos, depending on where you are in the Hispanic world. Never try to overcomplicate things in Spanish. Make sure you always say what's easiest for you to remember. Furthermore, many words in Spanish are the same as English. So just think of them as words you've already learned. The only thing that matters is the fact that you can converse with someone in another language
Starting point is 00:02:05 and that they understand you. Here are some more fruits that have the same name in English. Mango. Melon. Just remember to pronounce them with that Spanish flair. So how would you say pineapple? Pina. A fun way to remember this is to think of a pinacolada.
Starting point is 00:02:37 Apples in Spanish are... Manzanas. Strawberries are. Fresas. Fresas. Oranges are Naranhas Naranhas
Starting point is 00:03:11 Lemons are Limones Grapes are Uvas Ovas To ask for some bananas You would say Unas Bananas
Starting point is 00:03:46 Pananas Porfavor Unas Bananas Porfavor To ask for a kilo of strawberries, you would say, 1 kilo of frezes. 1 kilo de frezes. To ask for 5 oranges, you would say 5 oranges,
Starting point is 00:04:21 4 favor. 5. Naranhas For favor. Fuet is a key. is a cured dry sausage that is popular in Spain. It's similar to a French soccison and it's absolutely delicious. However, it's not the healthiest snack, so we should only get a little bit. To ask for a little bit of foet, you would say,
Starting point is 00:04:53 Un Poco de Fuet, for favor. Un poco de foet for favor. Eggs in Spanish are uevos. Webo's.
Starting point is 00:05:21 When asking for something in Spanish, you can say, Damme. Damme. This translates to Give me. Whilst this is perfectly acceptable,
Starting point is 00:05:35 it can sound a bit bossy as if making a command. Instead of saying da me, we can flip the script and say me da, me da. Don't worry. They both mean the same thing, but the latter is just a bit softer. Right.
Starting point is 00:05:57 Now, I'm going to test you on everything we've gone through. How do you say bananas? Bananas. Bananas. Bananas. Mango? Mango. How about melon?
Starting point is 00:06:28 Melon. Melon. How would you say pineapple? Pinia. And how about strawberries? Fresas. Oranges? Naranhas.
Starting point is 00:07:18 Naranhas. And so how would you say lemons? Limones Limones How about grapes Uvas Uvas How would you ask for a kilo of strawberries
Starting point is 00:07:58 One kilo de frezes One kilo De Fresas How would you ask for Five oranges Cinco
Starting point is 00:08:27 Naranhas Por Favour Cinco Naranhas Por Favour How would you ask for eggs? Evo, for favor. Oh, hang on just one minute.
Starting point is 00:08:50 Let me check my phone. It's Maria from last night. She's written, Hello, Kav. Is Maria. How is you? Quere is comere con me and my friends this night.
Starting point is 00:09:11 Hmm, let me just translate that in case you didn't get it. Maria has messaged me. She asked me how I am. And she asked me if I would like to eat with her and her friends tonight. Hmm. I better wait a few minutes before replying. I don't want to seem too eager. Right.
Starting point is 00:09:42 I'll say, Hello Maria, I'm very very good, thank you. Yes, I'm going to come with you and with your friends
Starting point is 00:09:55 this night. Do you're something of the market? I've just told Maria that I am very well and that, yes, I want to eat
Starting point is 00:10:11 with her and her friends tonight. I have also asked her if she would like something from the market. Excellent, says Maria. She also says, Por favor, you can bring vino rojo, pan and kesao for this night.
Starting point is 00:10:42 She's just asked me if I can bring some wine, red wine, bread, and cheese tonight. Let me just respond. Excellent. Of course I can. Okay.
Starting point is 00:11:02 Wine, bread and cheese. I got this. Look, here's a bakery. Dos bocodillos, por favor. In Spain, my favorite type of bread is called a bocadillo. It's similar to a French baguette, but it's a bit flatter two boccadillos or dos boccadillos should be enough next we need some cheese or kesso my favorite spanish cheese is keseo manchego it's a delicious hard cheese from the mancha
Starting point is 00:11:47 region of central spain oh look here's a cheese shop or tienda de kessos how would i ask ask for half a kilo of Manchego cheese. Por favor. Medio kilo de manchego. Por favor Medio kilo
Starting point is 00:12:18 de Manchego. Okay. The last stop is to get some wine. Spanish wine is much, much cheaper than what we get in the UK. You can pick up a good bottle for as little as five euros. My favourite wine is Rioja, which comes from the Rioja wine region in Spain.
Starting point is 00:12:48 It often has an oaky flavour from being held in oak barrels for an extended period of time. And just here in front is a Tienda of Vino's. To ask for two bottles of Rioja wine, I would say, dos potter, Boutherias de vino de Rioja. For favor. Dos bottles of wine of Rioja. For favor.
Starting point is 00:13:27 Right then, I better get this cheese home before it melts in this heat. I need to get ready for tonight. Taxi!
