Welcome back to immersive Spanish.
Starting point is 00:00:42 I'm currently walking the busy streets of Barcelona, through La Rambla to Maria's house. She lives right next to Plaza Real. It's this way! You know what? I just adore the narrow enchanting streets of the Gothic Quarter. It has its roots from a Roman village dating back to the 14th century.
Starting point is 00:01:05 It's like a labyrinth, loaded with secret plasas and stone fountains. But I tell you, it's a good job my phone's map has me covered, because otherwise, I'd be perdido. I reckon now's as good a time as ever to go over some meeting and greeting essentials. I better brush up, as I've got to introduce myself. Not just to Maria, but her friends too.
Starting point is 00:01:31 Remember, a good first impression can do wonders. In English, when meeting somebody for the first time, we typically say, pleased to meet you. In Spanish, they would say, Encanado de Conacertre. Or just Encanado. Encanado literally translates to Enchanted. It's not a word we typically use in English. but think of it as being delighted or frilled. Remember to be soft on the D.
Starting point is 00:02:10 The letter D, if placed at the end of a word, is pronounced very softly. Some accents barely pronounce it at all. Let's say it together. Encanado. Encanado. Oh, and if you're a female, then you would say Encanada. In most cases in Spanish, masculine words will end in an O and feminine words will end in an A.
Starting point is 00:02:40 Think about it. Have you not heard feminine and masculine versions of the same name? Well, how about Alejandro and Alejandra? Or how about Antonio and Antonia? Here are some more common, informal ways that you would greet somebody, like a friend or family member. Como estas? Como estes. That means how are you?
Starting point is 00:03:21 Que tal? Que tal? Translates to what's up. This is a very common way of greeting in Spain. Como te va? How does it go for you? A formal greeting in Spanish would be Como esth
Starting point is 00:03:55 We simply remove the S from estas That takes it from informal to formal Right here it is Number 16, floor 2 I hope this is the right place Ah, oh la Maria, Ketal! Let'sa Arriba?
Starting point is 00:04:27 What do you think Vamos-Ariba means? Vamos means let's go. And Arriba means upstairs. To help remember this, think of the cartoon mouse
Starting point is 00:04:44 Speedy Gonzales who would often say Arriva, just imagine him going up some stairs. So how would you say? Let's go upstairs. Vamos Arriba. Wow, okay, these are a lot of stairs.
Starting point is 00:05:10 Wow, what incredible! We've arrived on the rooftop of her apartment building, and there is a table laid out ready. Wow, I can see a view of the whole city, just as the sun is setting as well. Look, La Sagrada Familia, right there, right there. And the sea, ah! I have the things that you want.
Starting point is 00:05:40 Tengue Rho. Tengue also I'm chasso pocadillos. Ah, look, Maria's friends,

Starting point is 00:07:20 So in my case I would say Me Yamo Kav Responding to Eres de Aki Are you from here, I would say, no, I'm from London.
Starting point is 00:07:41 Responding to, what are you doing in Barcelona, I would say, I'm here, the vacations. Estoy here, de vacations. Answering to where do you live, or where are you staying,
