Season 4, episode 1.
La Jigada a Madrid.
Ola Viejeroz.
Welcome to a new season of immersive Spanish.
If you didn't know, I'm Cav, and after much deliberation,
I've decided to start a new chapter in,
Madrid. I've always wanted to move here to the Spanish capital and I think now is the
perfect time because after Anna and I found that pre-Columbian gold artifact in
Colombia last season she was offered a position at the University of Madrid. The
Colombian government also gave us a $20,000 reward for turning the artifact over to
their National Museum. Anna's still in Colombia with her family but she'll be
joining me in Madrid in a couple of weeks.
For now, I'm here solo to get our apartment and everything settled.
So, in this season, as I settle in, I'll teach you all the Spanish you need when moving to
a new country and dealing with those scenarios.
But even if you aren't in the process of moving abroad, this will still be of great help.
Ready?
Vamos, my henté.
For fin,
I'm in Madrid.
Although Anna
no
is with me
still,
I'm very
emotional
for this
new adventure.
Well,
first
pass,
to get my
maleta
and
find a taxi.
Let's
break down
those key phrases.
Firstly,
I said,
for
And that means I'm finally in Madrid.
For fin.
I'm finally in Madrid.
Next I said,
And
this means, even though Anna isn't with me,
Even
Anna
No
is
with me
even though
Anna isn't with me
Although
Anna
no
is
conmigo
Then I said
I'm
very
emotional
And this means
I'm very excited
I'm
I am
very
very
Emotionado
Excited
Next we have
Nueva
Adventura
Nueva
Aventura
And this means
New Adventure
Remember
In Spanish
When a word
ending in A
is followed by a word
starting with A
you blend them together smoothly
So it's not
Nueva
Aventura
But
Nueva Ventura
We have one flowing A sound instead of two separate A sounds.
Finally, I said,
Primer Paso, Primer Paso.
And this means first step.
Primar.
Paso.
Here's some essential vocabulary that pertains to travel.
The airport is El Aero puerto.
El.
Aero puerto.
Next we have the flight.
El Vuelo.
El Vuelo.
The arrival would be la gigada.
La Jigada.
The arrival is La Jigada.
Next, to say the suitcase, you would say,
La Maleta.
La Maleta.
To say you're excited, you would say,
I'm
emotionado
I'mo
emotionado
if you are a woman
and you are excited
instead of saying
I'mociano
you would simply change the O at the end
to an A
so it sounds like
I'moceanada
I'mo
emotionada
to remember
emotionado
just think of how
when you
you're excited, you are full of emotion. Emotionado.
Finally, to say alone, you would say, solo, solo. Again, if you're a woman, you would say
solo, solo. To remember the word solo, just think of the various expressions we have in
English, like riding solo or flying solo.
There is my maleta.
Now, I need to find a taxi to go to Airbnb.
Hmm.
Segun the application,
is in the barrio of Malazania.
Anna says that is a barrio very beautiful and centric.
I've got some essential transportation vocabulary.
So, I'm going to need a taxi.
An taxi.
The taxi is
El taxi.
Not too dissimilar from how it's said in English, right?
If I didn't fancy taking a taxi,
I could take El Autobus.
El.
Autobus.
Fortunately, Madrid also has an excellent public transportation system.
so I could take
El Metro
which is of course
the subway
to say the stop
as in
the bus stop
or a stop on a train
we would say
La Parada
La
Parada
La Parada
La Parada
To say the neighborhood
we would say
El Barrio
El Barrio
You've really got to roll that R
El Barrio
Finally, if something is central
it is
centrico
Centricor
So, for example
Es an Barrio
very centrico
Which means it is a very
central neighbourhood
is
a
a
barrio
very
centric
look

street,
La

Remember
when a
word has two consecutive ls. We pronounce it like a ya,
Calle. La Plaza. This is, of course, the square, of which there are many in Madrid.
La Plaza. El Parque. This is, of course, the park.
El Parque. The museum is
The museum
The
Museum
To prepare is

According Anna, there are documents that suggest that some of the treasures that we
have seen in Colombia have origins in the Spain Morisca.
Moriscos?
Yes, the Muslims who have lived in Spain, in particular, Anna, is interested in
Granada.
The city has a story

for Anna's arrival
in a couple of weeks
in our next episode
we'll tackle
getting Spanish SIM cards and setting up our new life here.
Anna's research on Moorish treasures in Granada sounds intriguing.
I have a feeling it might lead us to some exciting places once she joins me.
So you just walked into a bar, ordered drinks, and you're about to talk to someone.
This is where it gets real, right?
Because ordering is one thing, actually connecting with someone in Spanish,
that requires confidence.
And confidence comes from practice, daily practice.
Fluency Builder gives you just that.
It's an app on your phone, download it.
I guide you through social situations and video lessons on your device.
