Season 4, Episode 12, El Picnic.
What more, Villegeros?
Today, Anna and I are celebrating finally being settled into our new apartment in Madrid.
And what better way to celebrate than with a picnic in El Retiro,
the most famous park here in Madrid.
We've packed all the essentials for a typical Spanish picnic.
We're talking tortilla de potatoes,
Crisps, tomatoes freshes, and, for
so, of course, a bottle of wine
Blanco. Let's see how Anna is doing with the preparations.
Anna, you know, you're all ready for the picnic?
Yes, I've got toadier,
the potatoes,
the potatoes, and the wine blanco.
Perfect, my amor.
We're going to retire.
Look, Cap,
How beautiful
is the park
Oh,
Yes,
It's all
And there's
Many people
Paseando
Where do you
Scentartee?
Debato
The tree
In the
Sombra
Good idea
How rich
Woele the
tortilla
Yeah
I'm
This morning
In the
Panadier
of the
Quina
And the
Tomat
Oh, oh, oh, they're deliciousos.
Sure.
They're of the fruteria.
And not you'll forget
of the wine.
Salute, Anna.
Salute, Cav.
Ah, and you know what, Anna?
I like this life, Madrid.
A me, too.
We're also.
We know a piece of a beautiful.
The Retiro Serca and good
food.
Yes,
it's perfect.
What a lovely day.
Que die a mas soliado.
Sitting in the Retiro Park, eating tortilla, and drinking white wine.
Can you imagine it?
Feels like we're finally home here in Madrid.
So then, why don't we go through some of the Spanish from today's picnic?
Earlier, I asked Anna, do you have everything ready?
Tienes todo list?
Tienes.
Toto.
Lista.
Do you have everything ready?
And we also mentioned La Tortilla, the famous Spanish omelet.
Do you know what Las Batatas Frittas are?
Or I suppose if you are outside of Spain and in Mexico or any other Spanish-speaking country,
you might hear it as Las Pappas Frittas.
Well, they are, of course, crisps.
Or for your Americans, they are chips.
Las patatas frittas.
And how would you say tomatoes?
Los Tomates.
Los Tomates.
Moving on, we have white wine, something we are nursing right now.
How would you say the white wine?
That's it.
The white wine is El Vino Blanco.
El Vino Blanco.
Remember, we don't say.
el blanco vino but rather
el vino blanco
so remember that in Spanish
the noun typically
usually comes first
followed by the adjective
that describes it so it's
el vino
blanco and do you remember I asked
Anna where do you want to sit
don't de chere
sentarte
don'te
you're
of course
sentarte is a reflexive verb
We sit ourselves down, don't we?
One sits themselves down.
Hence why it's not just
Donde Kieres Sintar,
but rather,
Donde Kieres Sintar-te.
Anyhow,
Anna responded in the shade.
In La Sombra.
La Sombra, of course, being the shade.
And, perhaps most importantly,
Salud.
Salud, of course, means cheers.
And that's something you'd likely say
when toasting to a drink.
Anna,
what you
the vocabulary of
today?
I'm
good.
But you know,
this picnic
me
really?
I'm really?
A lot?
How so?
Well,
we don't
say
patatas fritas.
We're
we're
not,
and
in the
other of
tortilla
Spanish, my mom
made
arpeas
for the
pastes
familyaries.
Ah,
of
those
food?
Muchissimo.
And I
extra know
to go to
the
family,
primos,
Tios,
abuelos.
Colombia
always
will be
to be
part of
me,
you know?
Mm-hmm.
Entient
perfectly,
my
amor.
Before we
wrap up,
I want to
share some beautiful ways Spanish speakers express affection. You heard amor in our conversation.
But Spanish is incredibly rich with terms of endearment. After all, there's a reason they call it
a romance language, eh? So, to start, the next time you see your partner, you can call them
My Vida. My Vida, how istas? How do you do? My Vida.
Vida, literally means my life.
I know, in English, we typically wouldn't be so dramatic, but hey, this is Spanish.
In addition, we have Corazon.
Corazon, how de va?
Corazon, how te fue el diya.
And you probably know that corazon means heart.
So it's like, my heart.
How was your day?
Following that, we also have carino, which is like saying, darling.
You'll hear Carino in pretty much any Spanish-speaking country, although I would say I hear it a lot more here in the streets of Madrid.
Latinos, or those who derive from South America and Central America, if I were to generalize, I would say they have that extra touch of passion.
And I love it.
Finally, we have MISIO.
Can you guess what MISIO?
means. Yes, it's my sky, my heaven.
Ay my sierra, how I miss you.
So, each carries its own level of intimacy and cultural flavor.
My vida is deeply romantic, while carino can be used more casually amongst friends and family.
Bueno, Villegro's, that was our picnic in El Retiro.
a perfect afternoon with tortilla,
Vino Blanco,
and most importantly,
great company.
It's great to be here with Anna.
El Amor de my Vida.
I can really see as being settled
and happy here for a long time.
