Episode 9. La Compa Grande.
Hola, Viejeros.
Today, Anna and I are doing La Compa Grande.
The big shop.
Our new apartment is completely, a bit worryingly, empty.
So we've come to Mercado
Have you heard of Mercadona?
It's one of Spain's most popular supermarkets.
And the objective today is to stock up on everything from cleaning supplies to food.
I know.
It might not sound too romantic.
But when we're together, even buying milk is fun.
Vale.
Lista?
Contigo, always.
Foy.
I'm a lot.
lucky man. Let's start with some useful supermarket Spanish. The shopping cart, right now empty,
is El Carrito de la Compa. El Carrito de la. This is literally the little cart of the shopping.
the cart
the compra
the shopping
therefore the shopping list
would be
the list
can you guess it
la Combra that's it
the list of the Compa
the list of the shopping
next we have the checkout
La Caja
La Caja
And finally we have the supermarket,
which you might know if you've listened to previous episodes.
That is el supermercado.
So, and here's a bonus question.
If the supermarket is el supermarket, what is the market?
A market that's not so super.
It is el mercado.
We just get rid of the super.
Anyway,
we'll start with the basic.
Let's start with the basics.
We'll start with the basic.
Detergent,
fregona,
scoba.
And no forget the sponges.
Necessitamous
limpier well,
our nidito of love.
Ah, nidito de amor.
She calls it all.
little love nest. I still can't believe she's really here. By the way, this isn't just for me or
Anna. If you find yourself moving abroad, whether short term or longer, it's those seemingly
insignificant everyday words that will catch you completely off guard. So with that being said,
the detergent is el detergente. El. Detergente.
Think about how detergent without it you deter
people.
So you need detergente not to detergente.
Next we have the mop which is la fregona.
La fregona.
And next is the broom.
La Escoba.
La Escoba.
Think about how it kind of sounds like Escobar.
And that's somebody I'd like to hit with a broom.
And then, as Anna rightfully pointed out,
we have the sponge, which is la esponja.
La esponja.
Oh, and something else will need is an all-purpose cleaner.
El Limpiador multi-usos.
So,
Lipiator
Multi-usos
So, moving on to the
bathroom section we have
Papel
hygienico
Jabon
Tuayas
and
Anna
You want a alfumria
suave for the
baio?
Yes, like those of
hotels
Only that this hotel
is for two
So
to recap on what we just said
we started with
Papel Ingenico
toilet paper
El
Papel
hygienico
Then I said
Jabon
Can you think about what that might be
Any guesses?
El habon
is the soap
Next I said
Twayas
Twayas
las tuayas
which are
the taos
twaya
tau
I then asked Anna if she wants
an alfumria
de banio
a bath mat
alfumria
de
baño
and finally
I think we would need
el champu
what does
el champu
Sound like.
Shampoo, of course.
Well,
we need to the basic
for cooking.
Aceite of oliva,
extra virgin,
pan,
eggs,
coffee.
And a sartem.
I want to prepare
to arpeas
a manna.
Yeah,
I knew that
muddarm me
with you
was the
best decision
of my
life.
Oh yeah.
If you didn't know, arrapas are basically, how would I describe the manner?
They're the Colombian equivalent of sandwich bread, I would say.
Yeah, you can take the girl out of Colombia, but never Colombia out of the girl.
So, I said we're going to need the basics in order to cook.
Necessitamos lo basic to cocinar.
And then I said
Aseite de oliva
And that is of course
olive oil
El
Aceite
de
olive
or as they say here in Madrid
El Aceite
de olive
And of course
El pan
The bread
El pan
eggs
which are
Los Ubo's
Los Uvos
Los
webo
and coffee
El Café
preferably from
Colombia
Oh and yes
of course
Anna
smartfully pointed out
we need
a sartene
which is a frying pan
One
Sartén
Right
let's pay for all of this
Here you have
Herein
Grazie
Thanks
Lista
Now
now see
And then
Our life
Hustus
With casa
Limpia
Cucina
And you
And all
What we need
Well,
Crosite
Allie
The sofa
Next time
We're head to a
Furniture Store
To find
the first
pieces
For our home
But for now
We've got
Each other
And a trunk
full of
groceries
next.
