Here's something I learned teaching Spanish.
People don't struggle with vocabulary.
They struggle with confidence.
They know the words, but they're too afraid to speak.
That's why Fluency Builder focuses on confidence building.
It's a mobile app you can download right now.
I guide you through immersive video lessons on your phone in social situations.
Dinners, parties, conversations.
Then Rodrigo, our AI coach, coaches your speaking daily for your device
in a completely judgment-free environment.
Practice anywhere on your phone.
Your daily Spanish coaching team,

Let's get started.
I'm here in San Sebastian, as you know, and today I'm sitting in the Plaza de la Constitution.
It's a huge grand plaza and a beautiful square.
with tall old buildings all around.
As you hear me now, I'm sat in a cafe having a cafe with lece.
I'm just going to look up the history of this place.
One second.
Plaza de la Constitution, San Sebastian, history.
Oh, wow.
It turns out this place used to be a ball ring.
In the 18th and 19th centuries, this square functioned as an arena for ball fights.
The numbers you still see above the balconies, well, they're not decorative.
They marked the numbered spectator boxes.
Wealthy families would watch from those balconies, almost like private seats.
Later, when a proper boring was built elsewhere in the city, the plaza became what it is today.
a civic square used for markets, festivals and gatherings.
Que curioso. How curious.
So today, I'm sat in this cafe and I want to teach you something really important in Spanish.
It's something that confuses almost every beginner at some point.
And that is, soi versus estoi.
Both mean I am.
But in Spanish, you have to choose.
In English, it's always I am.
In Spanish, however, you decide.
And instead of thinking permanent verse temporary,
I want you to think about it like this.
Soi is what you are.
Soi is what you are.
Este is how you are or where you are.
That's it.
Soi what you are.
I'm
How you are
Or where you are
So if I say
Soy Kav
So
Kav
That's what I am
My identity
If I say
So I say
So professor
I'm
Again, that's what I am
If I say
Soy de
Inglaterra
So
I'm from. Again, that's where I'm from. That's part of who I am. Now, compare that with
I'm in the cafe. Estoy in el cafe. That's where I am. If I say,
I'm feliz, again, that's how I am. If I say,
I'm sorry
I'm
my current state
So imagine someone asks you
Who are you?
You answer with
Soy
If someone asks you
How are you
You answer with
Estoy
Just think
Identity equals
Soi
Statal location
And that includes emotions
feelings
I'm
that will guide you
almost every single time
let's practice
the word for happy is
Feliz
to say I am happy
what would you say
Estoy Felis
Estoy Felis
The word for tired
is
Cancadro
Cancado
So how do you
you say, I'm tired.
I'm tired.
I'm
cancad.
How about?
I'm very tired today.
I'm very
can't say
or
today.
Or,
today,
and that's because
that's how I am today.
It's a current state.
Now,
I'm from England.
So I'm
of England.
So
of
England
The United States in Spanish is
Los
States. So how would you say
I'm from the United States?
So I'm of the United States.
So I
de los
Estados Unitos.
How about I'm not
from England? No
I'm de England.
No
I'm
de
Inglaterra
How about this one?
I'm not from England.
I'm from the United States.
No
I'm from the United States.
No.
Soy
the
Inglaterra.
So
of the
States
Unidos.
How would you say
I'm a teacher?
So professor.
So professor.
Notice how you don't say,
So I'm a professor.
You just say,
Soi professor.
Literally, I am teacher.
The word for student is,
Estudiente.
Estudiente.
So, how would you say,
I'm a student?
So a student.
So a student.
How about,
I'm a student of Spanish?
So a student of Spanish.
I'm
studente
of
Spanish
Again,
what you are
that's why we use
Soi
I reiterate
Soi for describing
what you are
Estoy for describing how you are
or where you are
The word for waiter is
Camarero
Camarero
So how would a man say
I'm a waiter?
So I'm a marrero.
So.
Camarero.
And a woman?
So I'merer.
So I'mer.
Remember, change the ending of O to A for feminine.
Now, emotions.
Sad is Triste.
So, how do you say, I'm not happy, I'm sad.
No I'm happy.
I'm sad.
no
I'm
I'm
happy
I'm
and that's because
that's how you are
it's your current mood
how about
I'm happy
because I'm a student
I'm a student
I'm happy
because
why
I'm happy
because I'm not a teacher
I'm happy
because I'm not a teacher
I'm sure.
I'm happy because I'm not a professor.
I'm happy because no, I'm professor.
Notice how we mix them naturally.
How you are, I'm, what you are, soy.
Walk in Spanish is
Caminar.
I walk, camino.
How would you say?
I'm tired because I walk
I walk a lot.
I'm tired
because I'm going to much.
I'm tired.
Because
Camino,
much.
Remember, being tired
is how we are.
It's not what we are.
It doesn't define us.
It's temporary.
It's how we are.
So, with that being established,
how would we say,
I'm not tired because
I don't walk a lot.
No, I'm
can't
because no
camino much.
No.
I'm
quite.
Canceado.
Why?
No.
Camino.
Much.
Excited in Spanish
is
Emotionado.
Remember.
Full of emotions.
Emotionado.
So, how do you say?
I'm very excited.
I'm very emocionado
I'm very excited
because I'm going to Spain
I'm very emotional because I'm going to Spain
I'm very emotional
because I'm not very excited today
because I'm tired
I'm not
very
emotional
because
I'm
quite I'm
not
very
emotional
because
I'm
I'm
I'm
I'm
I'm
I'm
I'm
again we're
describing
how I am
Estoy
Now let's expand
If I am
is
I am
How do you say
you are
formally
speaking
esth.
So how do you say you are happy?
Estab felice.
Estab felice.
Now, usually you're speaking to someone you know, so informally we add an S.
Estes.
This is you, but formal.
Estes is also you, but informal.
Okay?
So, are you talking about you?
tired?
Estes
canzada?
Istas
can't?
Why are you excited?
Why are you excited?
Why is
emoscionado?
Why aren't you happy today?
Why not you
are happy today?
Why not you
are happy today?
Now of Soi,
if Soi means
I am,
in identity form,
how do you say
you,
are.
You are.
You are a student.
You are a student.
I am Kav.
You are Jane.
So I Kav.
Er is Jane.
I am Kav.
I am a teacher.
You are a student.
I am a professor.
Are you a student.
Okay.
So,
professor,
you're a student.
Are you a student or a teacher?
Erres a student or
you're a professor?
Hmm?
Erres student
or you're professor?
He or she is?
Is.
Yes.
He is a teacher.
She is professor, is professor, he is professor.
She is a waitress.
She is camerera.
She is camerera.
Now, temporary state, he is tired.
He is tired.
He, is ta, can's sad.
She is sad.
Estabrista.
She is
Triste.
They are.
So they're excited.
Would be
Estan emosionados.
They're emocionados.
Notice,
Emotionado becomes emocionados.
We add an S for plural.
So they are tired would be, you've got this.
They're tan cansados.
Not stand cancadro, but they are sad.
They are sad.
They're sad.
They are happy.
They're felices.
Yes, see, they're felices.
Right, guys.
Speaking of which, I'm done in this cafe for quite a while and there's only so much cafe con leche can help.
Right now, I'm still in el Caffé.
You wouldn't say, so I just want you to remember one thing.
So I just want you to remember one thing.
So what you are, estoy, how you are, or where you are.
I'm going to head back to my Airbnb and have a little siesta.
