Let's get started.
I just had some delicious tapas for dinner in a charming tavern here in San Sebastian.
But now I feel like something sweet.
I'm walking in a semi-bizzy old street in town,
and I'm looking for a eladaria, an ice cream shop to get an ice cream.
Now, ice cream in Spanish is elado.
Elado.
I like ice cream a lot.
Let me teach you how to express liking, loving and hating things in Spanish
because they follow a slightly different structure to English.
First, the phrase for I like is
me gusto. Me gusta.
Now literally, this actually translates closer to it pleases me.
So instead of saying, I like the ice cream,
Spanish says the ice cream pleases me.
But don't worry too much about that.
Just get used to the sound.
So, how would you say, I like ice cream?
Me gusta elado.
Me, gusta, elado.
Perfecto.
Now imagine we're walking through San Sebastian and we see a nice,
cafe? How would you say, I like this cafe?
Me gusta este cafe. Me
Gusta este, cafe.
Remember, este means this. Something close to you.
Este.
Now, what if you really like something?
Well, you can add much.
So how would you say, I like coffee a lot?
You would say, me gusta much.
So if I like coffee a lot is me
like coffee a lot is me Gusta Much el Caffe how would you say I like Spain a lot
Me Gusta much Spainia
Me Gusta much
Espania
Or if you really like Spain you would say
Me Gusta muchissimo Spain yeah
Now imagine we walk into the
ice cream shop.
There are lots of flavors.
Chocolate.
Vanilla.
Strawberry.
How would you say, I like chocolate?
Me gusto el chocolate.
Me
Gusta el chocolate.
How about I like vanilla?
Me Gusta la vinea.
Me
Gusta.
La vinea.
Vanilla is
Vinyl.
The phrase for I love is
Me Enkanta.
Me Enkanta.
So how would you say I love ice cream?
Me encainta elado.
Me encaanta
Elado.
And if I like Spain is
Me Gusta Espaia,
how would you say I love Spain?
Me Encaanta Espaia.
Me Encapa
Spain.
And honestly,
Me Encapta San Sebastian.
Now imagine you try a really amazing dessert.
How would you say, I love this?
Me Encasta esto.
Me Encaanta this.
But, of course,
sometimes we don't like things. So how would you say I don't like? Well, you just add no. So,
no me gusta. No, me, gusta. It does not please me. So, how do you think you would say,
I don't like coffee? Of course.
That's not true, but...
No, me gusta el cafe.
No.
Me.
Gusta.
El.
Caffe.
And how about?
I don't like milk.
No me gusta la leche.
No.
Me.
Gusta.
La leche.
Maybe you're like me when I was younger.
No me gust el broccoli.
No me gust del broccoli.
Now, sometimes we...
don't just dislike something. We hate it. The word for I hate is. Odio. Odio. So how would you say?
I hate coffee. Odio el cafe. The word for when in Spanish is
Wheno. Quando.
So how about I hate walking when I'm tired?
Remember, we learned Camino for I walk.
I hate walking when I'm tired is
I do caminar when I'm tired.
Odio, caminar, when I'm stuck, when I'm tired.
I hate to walk when I am tired.
I'd
I'd
I'd
I'm
now let's
practice a few
sentences
using things
we've already
learned
this season
how would
you say
I like bread
me
guista el pan
me
gusta
el
pan
how about
I love
cheese
me
encanta
el
queso
me
encan
the
I don't like butter.
No me gusta la mantequia.
No.
Me
Gusta la
Mantequia.
Now I want you to imagine you're in a cafe and the waiter asks you if you like coffee.
How would you say,
Yes, I like coffee?
Yes, me gusta the cafe.
Yes.
Me.
Gusta el
Caffe
Or how about yes I love coffee
See
me enchanta the cafe
See me
Encanta
El
Café
Let's combine this with something we learned earlier
Remember
I'm happy
I'm happy
So how would you say
I'm happy
because
I like Spain.
I'm happy because I
love Spain.
I'm happy
because
me
a good
Spain.
How about?
I'm happy
because I love
ice cream.
I'm happy
because I'm
a lot.
I'm
happy
because
me
can't
the elado.
So far, you may have noticed that we've been talking about things that I either like, love or hate.
But of course, when you're traveling, you'll also want to talk about what other people like.
In that case, the phrase for you like is, te gusto.
So how would you say you like coffee?
And how about you like the
coffee?
Te
Gusta
El
Café
And how about
you like
ice cream?
Te
Gusta
elado
Te
Gusta
el
elado
Very
but as you know
if we
really love
something
we use
Encanta
So,
how would you say
You
love
chocolate?
Te
encante
the chocolate
Te
Enkanta el chocolate
And how about you love Spain?
Te encapaea
Spain. Te
Encapa
Spain. And if you don't like something
remember, we just add no.
So at that being said, how would you say
you don't like milk?
No te gusta la leche.
No,
It doesn't please you the milk.
And how about you don't like butter?
No te gusta la mantequia.
No, te gusta la mantequia.
Now, if you really dislike something, we can say you hate it.
So how would you say you hate coffee?
Odias el cafe
Odias
El
cafe
How about you hate
walking
Remember
Caminar is to walk
You hate walking
Or you hate to walk
Is
Odias
Caminar
Odias
Caminar
Now I think it's time to talk about
He or she
To say he likes
Or she likes
We say
So then, how would you say he likes coffee?
Le gusts.
Le gusts el cafe.
Le gusta el cafe.
How about she likes ice cream?
Le gusts elado.
Le
Gusta elado.
Very good.
Now how would you say?
say he loves chocolate he loves chocolate le encante el chocolate le encante el chocolate how about she loves spain le encanta
spagna le enca spagna now if someone doesn't like something remember we just add no so how would you say he doesn't
like milk. No le Gusta la leche. No,
le,
Gusta la leche. And how about
she doesn't like butter. No le
l'gusta la Mantequia. No
le gusts la Mantequia. And if someone
hates something, how would you say he hates
coffee? Odia el cafe. Odia
El cafe. And how about
she hates walking.
Odi a caminer.
She hates walking.
Odiya caminar.
Now let's talk about more than one person.
Perhaps a group of tourists are in the ice cream shop.
To say they like, we say,
Les Gusta.
Les Gusta.
So how would you say they like ice cream?
That's it.
Les Gusta.
How about they like coffee?
Les Gusta elgé?
Les Gusta el cafe.
And if they love something, we say
Les Enkanta.
Les Enkanta.
And how would you say they love chocolate?
Les Encaulte el chocolate.
Les
Encacaulte
El
Chocolate
And if they love Spain
Les
Encapa
Spain
Les
Enca
Spain
And if they
hate something
How would you say
They hate
coffee?
Odian
The café
Odian
El
Café
How about?
How about
they hate walking or they hate to walk.
Odian caminar.
Odian.
Caminar.
I think you're getting the hang of this now.
So now, not only can you talk about your preferences,
but that's of your friends and groups of people.
For example,
Me Encante elado.
I love ice cream.
Or te guste the cafe.
You like coffee.
Or le en can't Spain.
He or she loves Spain.
Les Gusta el chocolate.
They like chocolate.
Super useful when you're traveling and choosing what to eat.
Right.
Ooh, this eladier looks good.
It's got a cue going out the door.
Well, that's usually a good sign.
So let's go in.
Ay, look at all of these flavors.
Chocolate, pistachio, mango.
How would you say I love pistachia?
Me Encante el pistachio.
Me Encanta.
El pistachio.
But maybe you don't like mango.
How would you say I don't like mango?
No me gusta the mango.
No me gusta the mango.
Okay, decision made.
How would you say I like chocolate ice cream?
Me Gusta the alado of chocolate.
But actually,
I'm
I love chocolate
ice cream.
Well, Viejoeros,
I'm going to order my ice cream now.
For now, though,
I'm going to come
elado.
After the next.
Chao, chao.
