Starting point is 00:01:35 And how does someone living and working under that uniquely bright spotlight, with round-the-clock social media scrutiny, keep themselves feeling sane, healthy and mentally strong? It's a question we think about a lot at women's health, and one which today's guest, supermodel and bare minerals clean beauty ambassador, Haley Bieber, answers articulately and with real heart. I'm Roshine Davis-Chokane and this is Going for Goal, the weekly women's health podcast.
Starting point is 00:02:01 On this show, we call on top experts to share the tools you need to make good on the health goals that matter most to you and chat to our favourite celebrities and wellness heavyweights about what they do to feel and function at their best. So Haley, well, that's a whole lot. From workouts that allow her to tap into her love of dance to a skincare regimen that helps her maintain that glow, she shares it all in today's conversation with Women's Health, editor-in-chief, Claire Sanderson. Haley speaks candidly, too, about how she protects her mental health, revealing why she now attends regular therapy, how her husband Justin supports her, and the change she's made to her online life that's had a profound effect on her IRL happiness. She also provides fascinating insight into how her husband's well-documented struggles with chronic illness and her own have altered the way that she understands what it means to be healthy.
Starting point is 00:02:50 If you weren't a fan prior to listening to this chat, I think you will be very soon. Over to Claire. Hello everyone. My name is Claire Sanderson and I'm the editor-in-chief of Women's Health. Welcome to our podcast Going for Goal. On the podcast today with me is one of the most famous women in the world. She is a hugely successful model who has starred in numerous fashion campaigns and grace the most prestigious magazine covers, including recently Italian Vogue with her husband, Justin. joining me today is Haley Beaver. Hi, Haley. Hello. Hello. How are you today? I'm doing really well, thank you. How are you? Yes, good, good. Very strange world we're living in at the moment. Oh, yeah. You're joining me from L.A. So what's the situation there at the moment? I understand you've got into a sort of another level of lockdown there. Yeah, you know, I just think the this people predicted that there was going to be another wave of COVID. And I think that's kind of what's happening right now. And,
Starting point is 00:03:49 You know, I just, the cases are really rising here a lot and, you know, yeah, feels a little bit eerie right now, but, you know, still, still hoping for the best fingers crossed that, you know, we can, we can maybe control it and, you know, the U.S. can hopefully control it better over the next few months and we'll see where it goes. But I think that everybody's trying to, you know, just do their best to stay safe. And I would just encourage everybody to keep wearing their masks when they go out. And, you know, If you don't have to go anywhere, stay home. And, you know, we've tried to walk through this pandemic as safe as we possibly could. So I'm just going to continue doing that. We are coming to the end of 2020. 2021 is on the horizon. And the only way is up. Surely it has to be a better year next year for all of us.
Starting point is 00:04:38 I have a lot of hope. I really do. I feel hopeful that even though this year brought a lot of sadness and a lot of negativity, and I also just think it brought a lot of new perspective and understanding. And I hope that people can see that and they can walk away from this year, hopefully enlightened in a way. And I think that it was a big learning year for everybody. I mean, for me especially,
Starting point is 00:05:02 I felt like I went through this year with a lot more growth than I ever have and a lot more understanding for things going on in the world. And I just hope to continue on that path, even in the new year. I couldn't agree more. I was speaking to a friend of mine recently, and I think we've all developed more compassion this year and more care for our neighbours and our friends. And when we say to someone, how are you? We really are interested in their answer rather than it just being a habitual greeting where we
Starting point is 00:05:33 don't really care. I do agree with that. I just wish that was maybe the case for social media because I actually don't think that's the case for social media. I think people online are still very vile and toxic and hateful. And I wish that that wasn't the case. And I wish that the people that perpetuate that behavior could have come to those realizations about compassion and about being more kind and about having, doing better to
Starting point is 00:06:00 try to understand somebody that they don't know instead of passing judgment immediately. I wish that was the case online and on social media, but it's not. And I hope that one day it can be. Because you do have, I believe, almost 40 million followers on Instagram. that's quite extraordinary. And you are one of the most photographed women in the world. So do you take a particular step to protect your own mental well-being? Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:06:25 I've talked a lot about this. And I'm just, I'm somebody that's a very big overthinker. And I'm somebody that is really, really, I can be very hard on myself. I'm my own worst, like, critics, or my own, sometimes my own worst enemy in a way. And I've, you know, the way I've dealt with a lot of the, I guess, the attention. and the negative attention and lies and just media in general is I've talked with a lot through with a therapist and I do therapy consistently. And I think that being able to process those things and process those feelings has helped a lot. And, you know, I'm also married to somebody that's
Starting point is 00:07:04 been dealing with this a lot longer than I have to an extremely like the highest level it could possibly be. And so I think being able to share that world with somebody that that understands it even better than I do has been so helpful as well and makes me feel like I'm not crazy. So that's that's been how I've really been dealing with that. And just taking breaks from Instagram and social media and, you know, I'll delete Instagram off my phone. I should probably do it more often than I do it, but I'll delete it off my phone. A lot of the time I do have somebody that helps run my Instagram and runs my social media. So sometimes I'll just send them photos and say, hey, can you upload this for me? My husband does the same thing so that we're not
Starting point is 00:07:53 the ones that have to like get caught in any, you know, black hole on Instagram of comments. I don't read comments. I shut my comments off on my personal like page. So it's only people that I follow that can comment. That actually changed a lot for me because I know all the people I follow are only either going to be positive in the comments or just, you know, I know nobody that I follow is going to be hateful in my comments. So that was a big thing. And just being able to like, I think the biggest thing for me with social media was the battle of like trying to, I think for a while it was like people made me feel like I had to explain myself when the reality is I just don't owe them anything. I don't owe strangers absolutely anything. And it just took me a while to like understand that. And it took me
Starting point is 00:08:39 a while to get there because I am like kind of a perfectionist and I want you know I don't want people to hate me and be mad at me. I want to be like, hey, I'm actually not this person that you think I am. And, you know, so I just realized there's people on the internet that no matter what you say and what you do, they want to just hate you because they are not happy with themselves. They don't love themselves. So they're not going to love anybody else. It's just easier for them to hate somebody that they don't know and pass judgment on people that they don't know because it makes them feel better about themselves. And that's a sad reality. And I think the more I've been able to break that down with a therapist and be able to break down that a lot of the time it has nothing to do with me and it has
Starting point is 00:09:19 nothing to do with my personal character, I felt a lot more freedom because I really grasped that concept and that and realize that that's actually the reality. So you mentioned that you have therapy there. Do you have any other rituals that you adopt when maybe you are overthinking and it is all starting to get to you. Anything that you do to calm your mind, maybe yoga or meditation or just watching a film, any simplistic things that you do? I think, yeah, I think for me, meditation a lot of the time means praying and prayer. And, you know, my beliefs are a very big part of my life and my faith is a very big part of my life. And I think being able to kind of take all the burdens that I feel and being able to kind of just release that.
Starting point is 00:10:05 pray about it and come to just have my own conversation with God and be able to kind of let it go that way is extremely important to me and extremely helpful. And amongst other things too, like I like to exercise. To me, that's another thing that keeps my mind really healthy and also keeps my body really healthy. And just spending time with the people that I know really do care about me and have my best interest and that I can trust. You know, being able to trust people around you and like I'm a person where I give everybody the benefit of the doubt until they prove me wrong and so you know being able to trust people and have people that I feel like really support me and have my back is important to me so you mentioned your exercise routine what does
Starting point is 00:10:50 a typical week in workouts look like for you um I really like Pilates I also really like to box for cardio and you know I'll do maybe a couple days in the gym with you know some like weight training and some cardio and then I'll do Pilates classes on the reformer. I used to be a ballet dancer, so I feel like Pilates for me is something that keeps my body personally in the best shape because it's very like elongating and it's very, a lot of the movements in Pilates are very similar to dance. And so I think that's why I identify with it so much and I like it so much.
Starting point is 00:11:27 And you are a model and you get photographed a lot. So you must pay particular attention to your, your skincare regime, I would imagine. So do you have any go-to products you can tell me about? I am really, really liking right now the new ageless collection from bare minerals. I really like the face and neck cream as like a night cream. I'm not a huge believer in actual retinal. I think it's very irritating for the skin, especially.
Starting point is 00:11:56 I'm really young still, so I don't even think it's a big necessity at this age. but I really like plant-based retinol, and that's what this is made with. It's made with a phytal retinol, which is a retinal alternative, but it's a lot more gentle. So I've been really loving that, and I think niacinamide as an ingredient is really important. I think it's really one of the best skincare ingredients that you can use. And then also things that are very moisturizing, like hyluronic acid and, you know, I'm a big, like, believer in keeping the skin nourish and moisturized. I think sometimes people think, okay, I have breakouts or I have acne. So that means dry the skin out, dry the skin out, dry the skin out,
Starting point is 00:12:39 when really you should be hydrating and treating it at the same time. So I just like to pay attention to when my skin's going through different phases almost, when the weather's a little bit more cold. I might switch up a couple things in my routine when it's the summertime and I'm sweating more. I might switch up the routine a little bit. But I'm pretty consistent with, you know, my daytime and nighttime routine, which for me is like a double cleanse with like a cleanse versus an oil cleanser, then followed up with like a just like a gentle wash or like a gentle foaming cleanser, a serum or two, depending on if I want to layer more things, a moisturizer. And then I always wear SPF every single day.
Starting point is 00:13:21 That's annoying. What? You're a muffler. You don't hear it? Oh, I don't even notice it. I usually drown it out with the radio. How's this? Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:13:29 Way better. Save on insurance by switching to Bel Air Direct and use the money to fix your car. Bell Air Direct, insurance, simplified. Conditions apply. Absolutely. I wish I'd started doing that earlier. In the UK, we've been...
Starting point is 00:13:39 This conversation so much. People are always asking me, like, do you wish there was anything you did younger? And I was like, I mean, if I had understood even younger than 24, that SPF was so important, I probably would have done it sooner. but I think that I'll be very happy when I get older that I even started doing it in my 20s. You know, you should put it on your hands as well, I was told.
Starting point is 00:13:59 I know, I know, I need to. You're so right. I don't. I haven't done. And you can really, I'm in my 40s now. And you can really tell the age on my hands. So, yes, that's my tip to you, Haley, the SPF on your hands. I promise you, I will start.
Starting point is 00:14:17 Is there anything else you do to look after your skin and your body? you know, to make lots of water, a particular approach to nutrition? I definitely think lots of water. I'm like, sometimes I just like totally forget to drink enough water. I don't find water a very interesting drink, honestly. Like sometimes I need to do like flavored water because I just, it's just, I don't know. It's just hard for me to just drink tons of water sometimes, even though I know it's so important and so healthy. Other than that, too, people always ask me like, what kind of diet are you on?
Starting point is 00:14:49 and I've tried different ways of eating, whether it's like I've tried keto, I've tried eating plant-based. And I think it's just about paying attention to what works for your body specifically. And I also did this like very extensive allergy panel at one point to understand what foods my body did not agree with and doesn't break down and some that give me brain fog. And, you know, it's like a food can affect your body in so many different ways. So it's just, I think what I do the most now is just knowing what my, what my, body doesn't tolerate basically what I'm allergic to and just staying away from those foods. So obviously health is something that can be taken for granted. And it's all become in the current climate. So front and center for all of us, do you think you have a different perspective on
Starting point is 00:15:34 its importance since your husband's Lyme disease diagnosis? I will say that like for myself and even for Justin, we're both very aware people of how our bodies feel. I mean, for me, I just, I grew up in a household where my mom was very aware of her body and her health needs and, you know, was very holistic in a way. And I just think that being able to listen to your body is important, like knowing if something doesn't feel right or it feels off or you eat something and it makes your body feel sluggish or weird. And also like finding the right people to, you know, get health advice from, like the right doctors or the right nutritionists. I know not everybody has, feels like they have access to people like that. But I also think, you know, there's lots of really good
Starting point is 00:16:22 information that you can find by, you know, reading different books about different ways of eating, knowing your, I think knowing your blood type is important to know what foods agree with your blood type and which don't. Knowing if you are, you know, allergic to gluten or not or like you're intolerant to wheat or not. I mean, those things people, I think a lot of people don't realize how important those things are because there are certain foods that your body basically just rejects because it just can't break it down. I think with the Lyme disease and that situation, you know, it definitely makes you more aware of, it makes you more aware of your health. And I think it makes you pay more attention to how you feel and different symptoms and diet is very important.
Starting point is 00:17:07 I believe when you are struggling with Lyme and all these different things. But it's, Lyme disease is an interesting thing because a lot of people don't believe it. it's real and a lot of people think it's some like BS not real thing when there's definitely a lot of proof you know I've had it before I've dealt with it my husband has it and deals with it and dealt with it very deeply so yeah I think it's about writing finding the right doctors to who believe who believe in um you know just getting to the bottom of any health issues that you might have and who can give you suggestions through um more natural treatments and different foods and, you know, all those different things. Exercise. It all,
Starting point is 00:17:52 it all goes hand in hand, in my opinion. And I think it's wonderful that people with such profile as yourself and Justin are talking about it because it is, it's amplifying. It's in people's knowledge and people, you know, people know more about Lyme disease now because people like yourself are speaking openly about the battles that you've faced. On a happy note, we read that your gorgeous wedding dress was by Vivian Westwood and made in an eco-friendly way. And you are a bare minerals, clean beauty ambassador. Is a conscious lifestyle something that's important to you? It definitely is.
Starting point is 00:18:31 I think that being aware of that and being able to just be, like being able to be conscious is important. You know, I think that being aware of our environment is extremely important. It's very obvious that our, you know, our planet is in distress. It's very clear. So I love being able to make conscious decisions in, you know, from clothing to beauty to food to all of those things. And I'm open to still learning more ways of how to do that. And I would love to keep improving the ways of being more eco-friendly and conscious for the rest of my life. Yes, it's a learning curve for all of us, isn't it?
Starting point is 00:19:10 We're all a work in progress. can I ask when you're at your happiest? You know, it's different times and different moments for me. You know, sometimes I feel my absolute happiest when I'm literally just like sitting in the backyard, like feeling the sun on my face, or like in the morning when I'm just sipping a good cup of coffee, or when I'm just hanging with my husband,
Starting point is 00:19:33 or when I have like a really good laugh with friends. It's like I feel like there's just so many different moments where I feel like, oh, I feel really just genuinely content. and happy right now. I don't think it's ever really one specific moment where I'm like, this is my happiest, because I've had moments where I'm like, this is where I feel at my happiest. And then something else happens. And I'm like, okay, well, this also feels like I'm at my happiest. So, you know, I try to just find the beauty where I can in different moments as much as I can. What's your number one tip for confidence?
Starting point is 00:20:03 I think it's a couple of different things, to be honest. And I think it differs for everybody. You know, my confidence has gone in different phases in different seasons of life. You know, there's times where I've felt a lot more confident than others. And I think it's okay to be honest and say like, hey, right now I'm going through a phase and a season of time, you know, where I'm feeling a little more insecure and not my most confident because I just don't feel like myself or there's times where I'm like, I feel like my most confident right now and I just feel really secure and really happy. And then a week later, it might be a different story and I might feel down because something's going on in my personal life or with my family or,
Starting point is 00:20:46 you know, I got bad news or, you know, I just simply feel insecure because that's a very normal human feeling. And I think it's okay to be honest and feel those things. And I think that, you know, being able to discuss the things that make me feel not confident and insecure. in a safe space, like with a therapist in therapy, has helped me a lot to, like, maintain more of a confidence because you have this person that you're, like, expressing your life to that is there to help validate your thoughts and your feelings. And I think that's really important. And then good people in your life, good friends, you know, for me, it's like my spouse, the person I'm married to is the person I confide in the most, more than any single person on this planet. So having just a good support system. and having people that make you feel safe to express how you feel and feel loved.
Starting point is 00:21:39 And I was always the type of person where I always tried to do the like tough girl thing where I was like, I may feel a type of way, but I'm not going to talk about it because I just want to, I'm just, it's not a big deal or I'll get over it or I'll just deal with it on my own where I'm in the phase of life now where I've really learned how to be more open about how I feel and expressing the things that make me sad or make me upset or make me frustrated. and I think that is something that is really helpful. And finally, this podcast is called Going for Goal. Are there any goals that you're shooting for in 2021?
Starting point is 00:22:17 Definitely. I have some business goals that I'm really excited about. There's some things that I really want to get off the ground and things I've been working on very hard for the last year. And our big goal of mine too is just to continue to keep evolving as a person and keep learning and, you know, keep being humble and being able to just say, hey, I'm still learning when it comes to this or something else. Or, you know, I'm open to advice.
Starting point is 00:22:47 I'm open to being wrong. I'm open to putting any ego to the side. So I just want to continue to be able to grow. That's usually always my, when people are like, oh, what's your new year's resolution? I'm like, I just want to keep growing. It's a valid one.
