Episode Date: July 24, 2026

Summary:Host Kevin Kaufmann explores how cognitive biases secretly sabotage business growth and lead to poor decision-making. He breaks down Daniel Kahneman's fast brain versus slow brain con...cept and outlines six specific mental traps: confirmation bias, sunk cost fallacy, overconfidence, recency bias, decision fatigue, and anchoring. Agents learn tactical frameworks to interrupt knee-jerk reactive thinking, separate urgency from accuracy, and use Jeff Bezos's regret minimization model to make strategic, long-term choices for their business.

Buckle up because we're about to take you there right now. Let me ask you a question. Have you ever made a decision in your business? You felt absolutely certain it was the right move. And then six months later, you looked back and thought,
Starting point is 00:00:43 what the hell was I thinking? All right, well, today's episodes for you. This is Kevin, Next Level Agents podcast. Thanks for joining me. Here's the deal. A lot of people, all of us have had that at some point or another, right? And this isn't because you're not smart. it doesn't happen because you don't work hard, but because your brain tricked you. Like your brain played tricks on you, right? Here's the reality. Most of the bad decisions that you've made in your business, I've made in my business, everybody else has made, weren't because we didn't have enough information.
Starting point is 00:01:22 They happened because of how we process the information. And so today, I want to talk you through something that honestly might maybe end up being one of the highest ROI, ROI conversations that you and I have conversation. That's maybe not the right word. Maybe the highest ROI podcast that you listen to, right? And here's what we're going to talk about. We're talking about how your brain actually makes decisions and why you default to the bad decisions and the six biases that are quietly costing you money, time, and momentum right now. All right. So and the other, I want to give a quick shout out. I kind of this brought, got brought to my attention by my friend, my mentor, my business partner, Ben Kenney. He shared some of this information with myself and some of the other place operators on a Zoom. I don't know, maybe a month or two ago. And I just, this was good. I just wanted to put it into some different words and share it with y'all. So first part I want to talk about is our fast brain versus our slow brain. Now you already. might be aware of fast thinking versus slow thinking, right?
Starting point is 00:02:30 That's a concept from the author Daniel Conneman. And the thing is, is he completely changed the way so many people think about making decisions because he breaks these, he breaks decision making into two systems. System one, your fast brain, system two, your slow brain. So your fast brain is automatic. It's emotional. It's reactive. it runs the show really like probably 95% of the time it's the voice that says say yes right now
Starting point is 00:03:03 or trust your gut or don't miss this opportunity now system two your slow brain that's more deliberate and analytical and strategic that's the part of you that actually builds businesses right but what's the problem the problem here if you think about what i just said your fast brain is basically always on. Your slow brain takes a lot of effort. And most agents, most leaders are building their entire business from their fast brain decisions. They're hiring, they're firing, they're rolling out marketing plans, expanding, recruiting all of this in system one, like, or in reaction mode would be another way of saying that, right? So I'm going to share with you a simple habit that will immediately improve your decision making.
Starting point is 00:03:54 We're going to just pause. That's right. Just pause and start saying this. Okay, this is a script. I want you to write this one down, okay? You're going to say, is it okay if I think about this for a day? That's your script. Is it okay if I think about this for a day?
Starting point is 00:04:14 That one sentence could be worth hundreds of thousands, if not millions of dollars in your career because it forces you out of a reaction and it into intentional thinking, right? And that's so hard because of this thing that we call it urgency trap. There's, there's a quote that I heard heard one time that kind of hit me and my guess is it's going to hit you too or maybe it already has. Maybe you've heard it. And quote is this, nothing in life is as important as you think it is while you are thinking about it. Nothing in life is as important as you think it is while you were thinking about it. And think about that for a second.
Starting point is 00:04:54 How many decisions have you made because they felt urgent, not because they were important. Deals, hires, partnerships, opportunities. Emotion creates urgency. We all know that. Like, that's actually something you get trained on if you attend enough sales trainings. But here's the deal. Urgency is not accuracy. And if you don't learn to separate those two things,
Starting point is 00:05:17 you're going to keep making short-term, short-term decisions that will hurt or go against your long-term vision. All right. Now I'm going to move into the six biases, right? This is the real reason this matters, because there are six biases that show up in our businesses every day. And once you see them, the good news is you'll be aware of them. And truthfully, you can't unsee them.
Starting point is 00:05:42 The first bias is confirmation bias. This one's everywhere. It's where you don't look for truth. you look for agreement, right? You made a decision and then you just go find evidence that supports your decision. You hire someone because you want them to work, work out for you. But then you ignore every red flag that they raise. You ask five people for advice until the one person tells you what it is you wanted to hear all along.
Starting point is 00:06:12 You chase a new lead source because other agents are talking about it. See, the thing is, that's not strategy. That's a validation seeking. Confirmation bias is validation seeking, and that is dangerous because you're not testing reality. Confirmation bias is about protecting your ego, which you don't want to do. The second bias is the sunk cost fallacy. This one costs people years.
Starting point is 00:06:38 You keep something not because it's working, but because you've already invested in it. A team member that isn't performing a system that you've spent money. on a marketing channel that hasn't produced for you. And you say things like, well, I've already put so much into this. And that's exactly the problem, right? Good decision makers don't ask, what have I invested? They ask, what would I do if I was starting today? If the answer is I would do this again, great.
Starting point is 00:07:09 If the answer is I would not do this again, well, there's your answer. You got it. The third bias is the over. Overconfident bias. This one hits high performers the hardest because success creates blind spots. You win in one area and you'll assume that you'll win in all areas. That's why some people go out and start other businesses, right? You build a really great real estate sales business. So then you start three other businesses. You build a strong team or a talent team and you just assume nobody will leave. You grow fast and you assume that growth will continue even without structure. And then reality. hits. See, confidence is powerful, but if it's unchecked confidence, that shit's expensive. So you don't, you don't want to have the overconfidence bias. All right. The fourth bias is recency bias, right? This one can mess with your perspective because what we tend to do as humans is we overweight what just happened recently and ignore the bigger picture. One bad hire and suddenly you don't trust your
Starting point is 00:08:14 hiring process. A deal falls apart. and now that lead source doesn't work. A tough month in, the market sucks. But see, business isn't built on moments. It's built on patterns over the long run. So if you don't zoom out, you're going to keep overcorrecting based on noise that may or may not actually be there. The fifth one is decision fatigue. This one's simple, but kind of brutal.
Starting point is 00:08:40 The more decisions you make, the worse your decisions get. And most agents are making decisions all day long. text calls clients contacts contracts team questions by the end of the day you're just fried and then what do you do you make big decisions the end of the day that's a mistake some of the worst decisions you'll ever made were when you were tired stressed or emotional i talked about this in the episode about the stupid zone right so here's a rule don't make big decisions when your energy is low delay them protect them because your state of mind your your state as a human to turn determines your judgment. All right. Number six is anchoring. And this one shows up a lot in real
Starting point is 00:09:20 estate as well. The first number that somebody hears becomes the reference point for something else, everything else. Think about price expectations with a seller or commission conversations, or you take a first-time home buyer out and everything is based off of that one house that they fell in love with, but they didn't have everything put together so they couldn't make an offer in time and somebody else bought it, right? So anchors get set and then they become incredibly hard to move, which means two things. We have to be intentional about the anchors that we create.
Starting point is 00:09:54 And you need to recognize when you're being angered by somebody else's number, somebody else's opinion, or somebody else's expectation. Because if you're not aware of it, you're not actually making objective decisions. So let's come up with a better framework for this, right? How do you actually make better decisions?
Starting point is 00:10:12 Well, there's a framework I love from Jeff Bezos. It's called the regret minimization framework. Here's how it works. Project yourself forward. You're 80. You're looking back on your life and you ask, which decision would I regret more? Trying and failing or never trying at all?
Starting point is 00:10:31 See, what this does is it removes the emotion of the moment. It can remove fear and your ego and the urgency. And it forces you to think in more long-term aspects. because great businesses are not built on short-term comfort. They're built on long-term alignment. So here's the truth. Better decisions don't come from working harder. They don't come from moving faster. They come from awareness. Understanding how your brain works. Recognizing biases in real time and having the discipline to slow down when it actually matters. So here's the challenge for you. The next time you're about to make a big decision, pause and ask yourself, am I reacting?
Starting point is 00:11:11 or am I thinking? Because that one moment, that one pause might be the difference between staying where you are and actually building the business you say that you want. All right. This episode hit for you. Share it with somebody on your team, a member of your brokerage, a friend, somebody. Because the more people around you that make better decisions, the faster everything's going to grow. I'll see you on the next one.
