We're taking a deep dive into longevity, specifically the work of Greg Braden. You know, One thing that I think sets Braden's work apart is that he doesn't shy away from addressing some of the limitations of modern science. Okay. Like, what do you mean? For instance, he talks about how the human genome project actually revealed this huge gap in our understanding of how genes actually work.
Starting point is 00:13:37 Oh, interesting. I remember learning about the human genome project back in school. Wasn't the idea to like map out all the genes in the human body and understand how they contribute to our traits and our health and stuff? That was the whole point. You know, and it was this huge achievement. but one of the surprising things that they found was that humans actually have way fewer genes than scientists initially expected. Fewer genes. I thought like more genes meant more complexity. That's what everyone thought. However, the project revealed that humans only have about 24,000 genes, which is way less than some other organisms like mice or even fruit flies, even though we're arguably more complex. That's really weird. So where are all our missing genes?
Starting point is 00:14:15 Like, what's accounting for our complexity if it's not just the sheer number of genes? we have. And this unexpected finding really led to a major shift in how we think about genetics. Braden explains that scientists started to realize that genes aren't just these static blueprints. Okay. They're actually very dynamic and they're incredibly responsive to the environment. So it's not just about the genes themselves, but about how those genes are expressed. Precisely. And Braden highlights this whole emerging field of epigenetics, which studies how environmental factors can actually switch genes on or off, influencing how they function. it's like having a volume knob on each of our genes in our environment, including our thoughts, feelings, and lifestyle choices can turn that volume up or down.
