All right, so we're diving into meditation today.
I know you want to know more about it.
And you sent over this ebook, How to Become a Meditation Expert.
Oh, yeah, MeditationLife Skills.com.
That's the one.
It is really interesting.
They do love their newsletter and podcast, don't they?
They really do.
But we're going to put that aside for now and just focus on what you want to know.
Right.
Because there's just so much info out there on meditation, right?
So we're going to try to break it all down.
Like, what are the key takeaways from all of this?
Yeah, for sure.
I mean, it's very overwhelming when you're first starting out.
You're like, where do I even begin?
Totally.
And this ebook, it doesn't hold back.
Right off the bat, they tackle that whole I don't have time excuse.
Oh, yeah.
I've heard that one a lot.
And they're like, time is irrelevant.
They even mentioned this waking meditation thing, which sounds kind of cool, but I don't know.
I mean, I get your skepticism.
It's like, really, come on.
Yeah.
But what if we look at it this way?
Maybe it's not about like ignoring time completely, but maybe more.
about how we can actually change our relationship with it.
Oh, I like that.
So instead of being like, oh, I got to find 30 minutes to meditate, it's like maybe finding
these little moments of peace throughout the day.
Yeah, yeah, like little pockets.
Exactly.
And that's where that waking meditation comes in, right?
Like how can you be mindful, even if it's just for a few breaths, just throughout your normal day?
Okay, I'm seeing the potential here, but they also talk about like all these benefits.
Okay, stress reduction, relaxation, sure.
Of course, yeah.
But then it's like improved physical appearance.
Connect with your true self.
Boost your creativity.
It's a lot.
It can be like, whoa, wait a minute, hold on.
Yeah, too good to be true, maybe.
But, I mean, a lot of meditation traditions will talk about how, you know, your mind, body, spirit.
They're all connected.
So I think some of these claims, they might seem a little out there, but they kind of fit with this bigger picture of well-being.
So it's not just about feeling calmer.
Like, this could impact every part of your life.
Yeah, I mean, that's the idea.
That's what makes it so fascinating to explore, right?
It's not just about the techniques, but like, what are these ripple effects that happen from doing it?
Hmm.
And according to them, anyone can do this.
They list out all these beliefs, you know, atheists, agnostics, realists, optimists, like, it doesn't matter.
Right, right.
Everyone.
Yeah, because I think that's really important for people who are maybe on the fence about meditation because they're like, oh, isn't that just for, you know, spiritual people?
Yeah.
And they're like, no, no, no, this.
e-book is saying like no dogma here totally like leave your labels at the door come on in exactly now
one thing i struggle with is all the different techniques you know yeah guided meditations mindfulness
transcendental meditation like which one so many choices so many but thankfully this e-book is like
find one and stick with it yes and i think that's great advice especially for like a busy person
Because you could just get so caught up and trying to do every single technique and then you end up doing nothing.
Totally.
So before we get into the specifics, let's zoom out.
Like what's the whole point of meditation?
The big why.
Yeah.
And they talk about like quieting the mind, connecting with a deeper part of yourself.
It's like tuning out static to hear a clear signal.
Oh, I like that.
So there's like this whole other dimension inside of us, but we're usually too distracted to even notice.
Yeah.
You know, like we're so busy, busy.
busy that we don't have that time to just be.
Okay.
How do we get there?
Yeah.
They describe a simple starting point.
Find a quiet spot, focus on your surroundings, then bodily sensations, and then your breath.
Is that like similar to other stuff?
Yeah.
It's got elements of mindfulness in there, which is really popular.
Okay.
And, you know, it's accessible.
So you're bringing attention to your external environment and then your internal environment.
You're practicing being present.
Right.
Which is kind of like the foundation of a lot of different meditation techniques.
So even though they presented as like their own unique method, it has a lot of common ground with other things.
Yeah. And I think that's reassuring for people because then they're like, oh, there's flexibility here. It's not so rigid.
Too, good. Okay, good. Because I think that's what makes people afraid to start, right? They're like, I'm going to do it wrong.
Yeah. And this ebook is like, no expectations. You might fall asleep. You might have your mind wander. You might be uncomfortable. It's all good.
It's all part of the process.
It's normal.
Yeah, because I think people are like, wait, I'm supposed to be like blist out.
Right.
But I'm thinking about like what I need to get at the grocery store.
Exactly.
But the truth is, our minds, they are active, they're thinking machines.
They are.
Lots are going to pop up.
That's totally normal.
It's not about suppressing them.
Okay.
But it's like, okay, can we notice those thoughts but not get swept up in them?
All right.
So remember how they said time is irrelevant?
Yeah, right.
Well, they do say you should aim for like 15, 30,
minutes. But they emphasize consistency over duration. Right, which I think is a more practical approach.
Totally. Because, you know, you're busy, I'm busy. We all have stuff to do. So it's like,
okay, if you can fit in short, consistent bursts, that's more realistic than being like, oh, I need to
meditate for an hour, you know, once a month. Small steps, big impact. Right. Let's talk about a big
myth they bust in this e-book, clearing your mind. Oh, yeah, that one. I have tried so hard
to have an empty mind.
You and everyone else who starts meditating.
And then I'm like, I'm failing at this.
So why is this idea like so harmful?
It sets you up for failure.
Yeah.
Because our minds are always generating thoughts.
So trying to make them stop is like, it's like trying to hold back a raging river.
It's not going to happen.
Not going to happen.
You're just going to get more frustrated.
So instead of fighting our thoughts, we need to change how we relate to them.
But how, this is where I get lost.
The ebook mentions befriending the mental noise.
But what does that even mean?
Yeah, that's a great question.
And one that I think we need to explore further.
It's about shifting from this mindset of resistance to one of acceptance.
Like, instead of battling our thoughts, can we just observe them with like curiosity, not judging?
Just like, oh, there you are again.
Okay.
You know, it's like becoming this like friendly observer, you know, of your own thoughts.
Ooh, I like that.
So we're not like shoving thoughts away.
We're just kind of say and high them as they flow by.
Yeah, exactly.
It's a lot less stressful than trying to have like zero thoughts.
Way less.
They even compare it to watching clouds drift by.
Oh, yeah.
Like you notice them, but you don't try to like change them or make them go away.
Right.
You just let them be.
Okay, that's a nice visual.
And it reminds me of something else they say.
Like the real magic happens when you just observe without judgment.
It sounds almost too simple, but I'm willing to try.
Well, and it's interesting.
because this idea, it actually connects to some techniques they use in therapy, like cognitive behavioral therapy.
CBT.
Oh, really?
I know it helps people with managing their thoughts and behaviors, but I didn't know as related to meditation.
Yeah.
So in CBT, a big part of it is recognizing that thoughts are just thoughts.
They don't define you.
So by creating that space between you and your thoughts, you get more control over how you react to them.
So instead of automatically believing everything you think, you can.
can step back and be like, hmm, is that really true?
Exactly. You get to choose how you respond.
That's so cool. It makes this befriending your mental noise thing makes so much more sense.
Yeah, it's not about becoming like this emotionless robot. It's about having a healthier
relationship with what's going on in your head. Right. Okay, so we're not aiming for complete
silence, but for mindful observation. Right. Just noticing. That feels way more doable.
But what about those like deeper states of stillness? And the e-book talks about
peace, connection, even bliss.
Is that like everyone's experience?
Or is that just for like meditation gurus?
It's important to not oversell that part.
You know, while those experiences can be really powerful, they're not the goal.
It's kind of like trying too hard to relax.
Sometimes the more you focus on it, the less relaxed you feel.
Oh yeah, I know that feels.
It's a paradox.
Like the more we chase those states, the more they slip away.
Right.
It's about surrendering to the process, trusting that those deeper states,
will come naturally.
Letting go of expectations.
It's about the journey, not the destination.
Exactly.
Speaking of journeys, remember waking meditation.
This is where things get interesting,
especially for busy people.
You can bring mindfulness to everyday things,
like washing dishes, walking the dog, even your commute.
Right.
It's about bridging the gap between meditation,
like sitting on a cushion and your daily life.
So instead of, OK, at 7 p.m.
Meditation time.
It's like finding those little moments of a
awareness throughout the day.
Yeah.
Yeah, you don't need a special place.
You don't need any equipment.
You can do it anytime, anywhere.
I actually tried this the other day while I was making coffee.
Like really paying attention to the sounds, the smell, how the mug felt in my hands.
How'd it feel?
It sounds silly, but it was really nice.
I love that.
And that's the beauty of it, right?
It can make those everyday things feel more enjoyable.
Totally.
It's like waking up to the world instead of like sleepwalking through it.
Yeah.
And the more you practice, the more it becomes just like a natural way of being.
So to recap, this e-book really flips the script on what meditation is.
It's not about emptying your mind.
It's about befriending it.
And you can practice in so many ways.
Right.
It's flexible.
You can sit in silence or just bring more awareness to what you're already doing.
And this time is irrelevant thing.
It's making more sense now.
It's not ignoring time, but changing how we see it.
Yeah, I like that.
Instead of feeling rushed and overwhelmed all the time,
we can create space for these mindful moments, even when life's crazy.
It's about realizing that we have more control over our experience of time than we think.
Yeah. It's empowering, right?
Totally.
Like, we're not just stuck on this hamster wheel.
Right.
I'm really starting to see the potential of this waking meditation.
It feels so much less intimidating than, like, the classic image of meditation.
Right.
And it's something I can actually see myself doing.
I love that.
And I think it really shows that, you know, meditation doesn't have to be this big, mysterious thing.
Yeah.
You know, it can be as simple as paying attention to your breath while you're waiting in line.
Oh, yeah.
Or noticing how your feet feel when you're walking.
Those are great examples.
Just little chances to, like, pause and reconnect even for a sec.
Exactly.
And remember, even a few minutes, if you do it consistently, it can really make a difference.
It's a journey.
It's not about, like, reaching some end goal.
This deep dive has totally.
change how I think about meditation. It's not a chore anymore. It's more like an invitation.
Oh, I like that. To be more present, more connected to what's happening right now.
Yeah, and that shift, it's so powerful because it opens up all these possibilities.
Like it becomes less about reaching some specific state of mind. Right. And more about just
how you are in the world. It's about bringing more awareness to everything, more intention, more
joy, even the simple stuff. Beautifully said. So building up.
on that. Here's something for you to think about. What's one everyday thing you could be more
mindful of this week? Maybe it's your commute, your lunch break, even brucking your teeth?
Right. See what happens when you shift from just doing something to really being present
while you do it. I love that. We'll put links to that e-book in the show notes if you want to check it out.
Awesome. And remember, meditation's a journey. Don't get discouraged if you feel like you're not
getting it right away. Even baby steps can lead to big changes. Exactly. Until next time, keep diving
deep and be well.
