Starting point is 00:00:00 We appreciate your interest in today's meditation life skills podcast. We sincerely grateful for your support. All right, everyone, get ready, because today we are going deep, deep into the world of the subconscious mind. Ooh, exciting. It is, right. We're going to be exploring how this hidden part of ourselves, this subconscious, can either, like, help us totally sore to success or...
Starting point is 00:00:32 Yeah, trip us up. Trip us up big time, exactly. So first of all, it's kind of... wild how much influence our subconscious mind actually has, right? It really is. It's like we walk around thinking we're in control, you know. Totally. But there's a whole lot going on under the surface that we don't even realize it's affecting every decision we make. Oh yeah, for sure. Our actions, everything. Yeah. And the podcast we're looking at today uses this really great analogy. It's the iceberg. Oh yeah, classic. It's such a classic image, but it really does illustrate this point so perfectly. It really does. So like imagine an iceberg. Okay. You've got the tip poking out a the water, right? And that's our conscious mind, the stuff we're actually aware of, like the thoughts we can easily access. Like the thinking one.
Starting point is 00:01:14 Yes, exactly. The one that thinks it's in charge. Yes, exactly. But then there's this massive, like, chunk hidden underwater, and that's the subconscious, right? Exactly. That's the part that's really running the show. It is. It's like the one that decides if we're actually going to succeed or not.
Starting point is 00:01:28 Yeah. And it's where all our memories live and our beliefs and all these ingrained patterns, even the ones we don't know about. Right. And it's fascinating how this. plays out in real life. It really is. So it's kind of like our conscious mind might be setting the goals, like, I want to do this. Yeah, yeah. But then the subconscious is the one actually scaring the ship. And sometimes it's steering us right into an iceberg. Yes, exactly, right into an iceberg.
Starting point is 00:01:53 Imagine you're like consciously trying to lose weight, right? So maybe you're tracking your calories, you're going to the gym, you're doing all the right things. But then you're subconscious based on years of maybe not so great eating habits keeps triggering these cravings for sugary snacks or whatever. Tell me about it. It's so relatable. It's that constant battle. It is. It's like what you want to do and what your subconscious is almost like making you do. Right. Exactly. It's so frustrating. Yeah. And so I guess that's why it's so important to understand the signs that your subconscious might be working against you, right? Absolutely. Like how do we know if our subconscious is a friend or foe in this whole process? Right. Exactly. procrastination, which, I mean, who hasn't procrastinated?
Starting point is 00:02:38 Oh my gosh, all the time. Right. And then self-sabotage, you know, where we unconsciously undermine our own efforts. Oh, yeah. It's crazy. It's a big one. Inconsistent behavior like, we know what we should be doing, but then we just don't do it. We don't actually do it, yeah.
Starting point is 00:02:52 Yeah, and I think a lot of people can relate to this. It's like that feeling of being stuck, even when things like on the surface seem to be going pretty well. Yes, exactly. Like that feeling of inner conflict where you're. your external achievements and success don't really match how you feel inside. Yeah, it's almost like you're successful on paper, but you're not happy. It's like you're not really fulfilled, right? Totally.
Starting point is 00:03:14 Yeah. So now that we've like maybe identified some red flags, I guess, let's move on to the good stuff. Yeah, let's fix it. The reprogramming techniques, because I am so ready to like turn my subconscious into my own personal cheerleader, you know? Yeah, I love that. Like, how do we actually reprogram this thing? So let's start with positive affirmations because I have to admit I've always been a little bit skeptical about those. Really?
Starting point is 00:03:39 Yeah. Like, is it really that simple? Can you just repeat these positive phrases to yourself? And it actually like makes a difference. It's pretty amazing how powerful they can be. Okay. It's about consciously replacing those negative thought patterns with positive statements that align with what you want. Right.
Starting point is 00:03:58 Your goals. So like instead of saying, oh, I'm so bad at this, it's like I am case. That kind of thing. Exactly. It might feel a little weird at first. Yeah. But imagine saying something like, I am capable of achieving great success every single morning.
Starting point is 00:04:12 Okay. So it's like you're deliberately flooding your mind with positivity to like counteract all that negative stuff that creeps in. Exactly. And you know what's cool? From a neuroscience perspective. What? When you do this, when you repeat these affirmations, even if you don't totally believe it at first, you're creating new neural pathways in your brain.
Starting point is 00:04:33 Wait, so there's like actual science behind it? Oh yeah. It's not just some woo-woo feel-good thing. Wow. It's like you're literally rewiring your brain for success. That is so cool. Right. And speaking of rewiring, let's talk about visualization
Starting point is 00:04:47 because that's another technique that's even more powerful when you look at it through the lens of neuroscience. Okay, I'm ready. Visualization isn't that kind of just like daydreaming? Well, it's a little more than just wishful thinking. Okay. It's about creating this vivid mental picture of what you want to achieve. Okay.
Starting point is 00:05:05 And you engage all your senses. So instead of just kind of vaguely hoping for that promotion, you would actually like imagine yourself in the new role. Okay. Feeling the excitement, seeing your none are on the door, like really experiencing it. Oh, wow. So it's like you're tricking your brain into believing it's already happened. In a way. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:05:25 And then your subconscious is like, oh, okay, well, I guess we're doing this then. Exactly. you're activating the same neural pathways as if you were actually living it. What? That's wild. Isn't it cool? You're strengthening those connections in your brain. Yeah, it's like planting the seeds of success in your subconscious garden, right?
Starting point is 00:05:41 I love that analogy. It really highlights the intentional nature of this. Yeah, it's not just like hoping and wishing. You're really like doing something. Yes, exactly. And speaking of being intentional, let's talk about mindfulness and meditation. Okay. Two practices that I think are so helpful in helping us tune in to what's going on in that subconscious mind.
Starting point is 00:06:04 Okay, because mindfulness and meditation seems like everyone's talking about them these days, right? Oh, yeah. But how do they actually like help with this with reprogramming the subconscious? Well, mindfulness is all about being present in the moment. Okay. Noticing your thoughts and feelings without judgment. Right. So it's like you hit the pause button on that constant chatter in your mind.
Starting point is 00:06:25 Oh, yeah, that constant chatter. Which then allows us to become more aware of those subconscious patterns and beliefs that we've been talking about that are often just running on autopilot in the background. So instead of being like swept away by all those thoughts, it's more like, okay, hold on, I'm going to step back and just observe them. Exactly. Almost like becoming a detective of my own mind. Yes. And that's where meditation comes in. Okay.
Starting point is 00:06:47 It takes mindfulness a step further and creates this space for deeper introspection. It's about quite a bit. the mind, finding stillness, and allowing those deeper, often hidden thoughts and emotions to come to the surface. So it's like diving beneath the surface of that iceberg? I love that. To like explore the hidden depths. Yes, perfect. And you know what else helps us delved into those hidden depths? What? Journaling. Journaling. You mean just like writing down my thoughts and feelings. Like how does that tap into the subconscious? Right. Yeah. It's way more powerful than you might think. Okay. It's like journaling gives your.
Starting point is 00:07:25 subconscious a voice. Hmm. By writing things down, you're bringing to light all those hidden beliefs and patterns that might be driving your behavior. It's almost like having a conversation with your subconscious. Right. Exactly. Like a direct line.
Starting point is 00:07:40 Yeah. And I've heard that journaling can be really helpful for like spotting recurring themes in your life. That's so true because when you go back and read your entries, you might start to notice patterns, you know? Oh, yeah. And you're thinking, your reactions, even the kinds of, situations that trigger you.
Starting point is 00:07:57 Right. The things that keep happening over and over again. Yeah. And it's a way to like become your own therapist almost. Oh, interesting. And uncover the roots of those subconscious patterns that we've been talking about that might be holding your back. This is all so fascinating.
Starting point is 00:08:11 I'm already feeling like I have a better understanding of my own mind. That's great. But I also have to admit, I'm a little intimidated by this whole idea of like reframing limiting beliefs. I get that. It seems like, whoa, deep work. It is deep work. but it's also incredibly rewarding.
Starting point is 00:08:26 Okay, so tell me more about these limiting beliefs, how we overcome them, what kind of deep work are we talking about? Okay, so it all starts with recognizing that a lot of our self-sabotaging behaviors, those negative thought patterns that keep popping up. Yeah. They actually stem from these limiting beliefs that we've picked up along the way, you know? So those, I'm not good enough or I'll never be successful thoughts. Exactly.
Starting point is 00:08:51 The ones that could just like knock you off your game. Yeah. And often, these beliefs are buried so deep in our subconscious that we don't even realize they're running the show. Right. And we just feel stuck. Exactly. You feel stuck, frustrated, but you don't know why. Yeah, that's what's so tricky about them. It's like there's this gremlin in your head whispering doubts in your ear. It really is. So where do these limiting beliefs even come from?
Starting point is 00:09:15 Well, it's a combo of things. Okay. Past experiences, messages we received growing up, you know, even just societal conditioning. Oh, right. Past traumas, both big and small, act as this giant recording device. Whoa, interesting. It captures both the positive and negative experiences that shape our beliefs about ourselves and the world. Wait, hold on. Are you saying like a childhood experience, like let's say someone told me I wasn't good at drawing when I was a kid.
Starting point is 00:09:42 Could that still be impacting me today? Absolutely. Those early experiences, they can be so powerful. Wow. Imagine, you know, a little kid being told over and over again they're not good at something. Right. Over time, that message, it gets internalized. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:10:00 It gets this limiting belief that they lack that ability. He becomes part of who they are. Yeah. And even years later, that belief might show up as a fear of trying new creative things or, you know, a hesitation to express themselves creatively. So it's not just about drawing then. It's about like anything creative. Exactly. It can affect all areas of life.
Starting point is 00:10:20 That's mind-ploring. I never realized how much our past could still be, like, holding us back. It's incredible, the power of the subconscious. So how do we actually reframe these limiting beliefs once we've identified them? That's the million-dollar question, right? Yes. Is it as easy as just deciding to think positive? But it's probably not that simple. It's a little more involved than that, but positive thinking is definitely part of it. Okay.
Starting point is 00:10:44 It's a process, really. Right. It involves a few key steps. Okay. First, you got to identify the specific belief that's holding you back. Right. Then it's important to understand where that belief came from. Okay.
Starting point is 00:10:56 Was it a specific event, a pattern of negative self-talk? So like investigating. Exactly, little detective work. Okay. Once you pinpoint the source, you can start to challenge the validity of that belief. Okay. So let's say my limiting belief is I'm not good enough. Okay, classic one.
Starting point is 00:11:12 How would I challenge that? Well, you ask yourself, is that actually true? Ooh, good question. Like, what evidence do you have to support that? Okay. And often, when we really examine these limiting beliefs, we realize they're based on distorted perceptions. Oh, interesting. Or outdated information from our past.
Starting point is 00:11:32 So, like, things that aren't even true anymore. It's about replacing those negative thoughts with more realistic and empowering ones. Okay. I like that. And this is where the techniques we talked about earlier, the affirmations, the visualization, even journaling. Right. It becomes super powerful tools. I see.
Starting point is 00:11:48 It all connects. It all works together. So it's like creating this multi-pronged approach to like really rewire your subconscious mind. Exactly. You got it. Okay. So let's break it down a bit further. Let's talk about each one.
Starting point is 00:12:01 Yeah. So with affirmations, you're consciously choosing positive statements that directly counteract those negative beliefs. Right. So instead of I'm not good enough, you might say I am capable and worthy. Okay. And with visualization, can I like imagine myself confident? handling situations that usually trigger that feeling.
Starting point is 00:12:20 Absolutely. Okay. By repeatedly visualizing yourself succeeding, you're essentially training your subconscious to believe in your abilities. So cool. What about journaling? How does that fit into this whole reframing process? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:12:32 Journaling can be so helpful for getting clarity around those limiting beliefs. Okay. And really seeing their impact. Okay. So try this. Write down the negative thought. Okay. And then really dig deep.
Starting point is 00:12:43 Explore where it came from. Okay. What experiences might have. have reinforced it over time. This self-reflection can be incredibly powerful. So it's like you're becoming a detective of your own mind again. Exactly. You're uncovering the clues to see how these beliefs have shaped your thoughts and behaviors. That makes so much sense. This is all really helpful. I'm glad. But I have to ask, how do we actually stay motivated throughout this whole process? That's a great question. Because it sounds like it takes a lot of time and effort to reframe these beliefs,
Starting point is 00:13:14 to rewire those pathways in your brain. It absolutely does. Right. But the key is to remember that even small, consistent efforts can make a huge difference over time. Oh, I like that. Small, consistent efforts. That's what it's all about. So maybe we should move on to talking about how to actually make all this work in real life.
Starting point is 00:13:32 Yes. Let's get practical. I'm sure a lot of people were probably wondering how to fit all this into their already busy lives. Right, because who has time to, like, meditate for an hour every day or especially, hours journaling. Exactly. It's not about changing everything overnight. It's about making small, sustainable changes. So like baby steps. Exactly. Baby steps. So instead of feeling like I have to meditate for an hour every day, I can just start with a few minutes. Yes. Even five minutes of focused breathing or a short guided meditation, it can make a huge difference. The key is consistency,
Starting point is 00:14:11 making it a regular practice. Got it. And I guess the same goes for affirmations, right? Absolutely. Like I can incorporate those into my existing routine, maybe while I'm getting ready in the morning. Or winding down at night, whatever works for you. That's reassuring because I was starting to feel a little overwhelmed, like adding a whole bunch of new things to my to-do list. No, no, it's about finding what works for you. Remember, consistency is more important than intensity. I like that. Start small, gradually build from there. Okay. And what about visualization? When's the best time to do that? It can be powerful any time. Okay. But a lot of people find it especially helpful before bed.
Starting point is 00:14:47 Oh, interesting. It's like planting those seeds of success as you drift off to sleep. So instead of scrolling through social media before bed, I could be visualizing myself, achieving my goals. Much better use of your time. I like that. And you can do the same thing with journaling. Okay. Even a few minutes each day can be so insightful. This is great. I feel like I'm actually being given the tools to like make real change. That's what it's all about.
Starting point is 00:15:13 understanding that connection between the conscious and subconscious. Right. It's powerful stuff. It is. And speaking of transformation, we've been talking a lot about reframing these limiting beliefs. Yeah. But I'm curious, from your experience, what are some of the common challenges that people face when they're trying to actually shift those deep-seated beliefs? Yeah, it's a great question.
Starting point is 00:15:34 And, you know, honestly, one of the biggest challenges is that we often don't even realize these limiting beliefs are there. Oh, totally. it's like they're hiding in the shadows. Exactly. Operating behind the scenes. And we just feel stuck. Yeah. And we might try different things to change.
Starting point is 00:15:50 Right. Like self-help books or whatever. But we don't address the root cause. Oh, that makes sense. So the first step is really just bringing those beliefs into awareness. Okay. So how do we do that? Well, mindfulness is a big one, like we talked about earlier.
Starting point is 00:16:04 Great. Paying attention to your thoughts. Noticing when you feel those negative emotions, that resistance. And when we notice those things, what do we do? That's where things get interesting. We can start to question those beliefs. Okay. Like really challenge them, put them on trial.
Starting point is 00:16:18 Ask yourself, is this really true? What evidence do I have to support this? Okay. So, like, if I have a belief that I'm not good enough, I need to, like, gather evidence for and against that belief. And you might be surprised at what you find. Okay. Often, those limiting beliefs are based on old stories, past experiences that are no longer relevant. Right.
Starting point is 00:16:41 Yeah. So the next step is to start reframing those beliefs. Okay. So what does reframing actually look like in practice? It's about consciously choosing new, more empowering thoughts and beliefs to replace the old ones. So kind of like replacing a negative thought with a positive one. It's a little more nuanced than that. Okay.
Starting point is 00:17:00 It's about creating beliefs that are more aligned with who you want to be. Right. The best version of yourself. Exactly. And this is where affirmations can be really helpful. Okay. Remind me how those work again? It's about repeating positive statements.
Starting point is 00:17:11 that affirm the new belief you want to create. So like, I am worthy or something like that. Exactly. And the more you repeat them, the more your subconscious starts to believe them. Wow, that's cool. It's like planting seeds in your mind. So what about visualization? How does that fit in?
Starting point is 00:17:27 Visualization is incredibly powerful. It's about creating a vivid mental picture of yourself living with that new belief. So, like, imagining myself succeeding in a situation where I usually feel like I'm not good enough? And the key is to make it as real as possible. Okay. Engage all your senses, feel the emotions, really embody that new belief. So it's not just seeing it. It's like feeling it. The more real you can make it, the more powerful it becomes.
Starting point is 00:17:55 This is all making so much sense. Good. And remember, it's a process. Right. It takes time. Exactly. Be patient with yourself. Celebrate the small wins. I like that. Celebrate the small wins. And don't be afraid to ask for support if you need it. Right. Like a therapist or a coach.
Starting point is 00:18:10 Having someone to guide you and hold you accountable can make a huge difference. So to sum it all up, it sounds like the key to reframing those limiting beliefs is about awareness, challenging those beliefs. Yeah. And then consciously choosing new beliefs that empower us. Absolutely. And the beautiful thing is once we start to shift those beliefs, we start to see changes in every area of our lives. I love that. And I think that's a perfect segue into our next topic, which is how to actually integrate all of this into our daily lives.
Starting point is 00:18:39 Okay, yeah, let's talk about that because I think a lot of people might be feeling a little overwhelmed right now. Like, how am I supposed to fit all of this in? Right. It's a lot to take in. It is, but it doesn't have to be complicated. Okay. We can start small. Okay. Just a few minutes each day can make a huge difference.
Starting point is 00:18:55 Okay. So what are some practical things that people can start doing right away? One thing I recommend is creating a morning ritual that includes some of the techniques we talked about. Okay, like a little self-care routine. Exactly. Maybe you start with a few minutes of meditation. to quiet your mind. Okay.
Starting point is 00:19:11 Then you do some affirmations to set your intentions for the day. Mm-hmm. And maybe you even visualize yourself succeeding in a specific area of your life. So just 10 or 15 minutes in the morning could make a difference. Absolutely. It's about creating a foundation of positivity and self-belief to start your day. I love that. And what about throughout the day?
Starting point is 00:19:33 Are there things we can do to, like, stay on track? Yeah, it's all about those little reminders. Maybe you set an alarm on your phone to remind you to take a few deep breaths and check in with yourself. Okay, that's a good idea. Or you keep a journal handy to jot down any negative thoughts that come up. So you can like process them later. And then you can use those techniques we talked about to reframe them. This is all so practical.
Starting point is 00:19:55 I feel like I'm actually getting a handle on this. Good, I'm glad. And remember, it's a journey, not a destination. Right. It's all about progress, not perfection. Be kind to yourself, celebrate the wins, and keep moving forward. forward. Okay, now for the big question. What's one subconscious belief that you suspect might be holding you back? Ooh, that is a good question, and one we can all benefit from pondering.
Starting point is 00:20:20 It is. It might take some soul searching, but I think it's worth it. It absolutely is. Because once we identify that belief, we can start using all the tools we've been talking about to reframe it and create a life that's more aligned with our true potential. So what are some final thoughts you want to leave our listeners with. I guess the biggest takeaway is that we all have this incredible power within us to shape our reality. We do. By understanding how our subconscious mind works. Yeah. And by using these techniques to reprogram it, we can create a life that's beyond our wildest dreams. I love that. So to everyone listening, I want to leave you with this challenge. Take some time to reflect on that question we posed earlier. What's one belief that might be holding
Starting point is 00:21:04 you back. And what's one small step you can take today to start shifting that belief? It's a great challenge. It is. And remember, you have the power to transform your life. You absolutely do. One thought, one belief, one action at a time. Beautifully sad. We appreciate your interest in today's meditation life skills podcast. We sincerely grateful for your support.
