We appreciate your interest in today's meditation life skills podcast.
We sincerely grateful for your support.
Have you heard the phrase, if you want to be successful, you must be willing to disappear for a while?
If so, you probably have an idea that what Monk Mode is.
Monk Mode is a self-imposed period of limited social interaction, isolation, or solitude that one undertakes to focus on accomplishing a specific goal.
self-improvement or personal growth.
It is usually seen more as a metaphorical retreat than a physical one.
Monk mode is inspired by the focused and dedicated lives of monks
who separate themselves from the meddlesome distractions of the outside world,
typically to concentrate on spiritual practices.
During these retreats, individuals engaging in monk mode often abstain from unnecessary social interactions,
stay away from social media and other distractions that may pose a threat to their personal transformation,
development, and goals.
They personally identify the things that pull them away from their dreams, aspirations, and goals,
and consciously pull away from them.
The aim of this is not just to gain clarity, but also to achieve significant progress
in the chosen aspects of their lives through improved dedication, commitment, focus, and
concentration. You can activate monk mode and fully delve into awakening, personal transformation,
and deep work. Keep in mind, it will not work like magic. So, dig in, think like a monk,
do all that you must do, and like the caterpillar hiding in a cocoon for a while,
emerge like the beautiful butterfly you have always been meant to be. Remember, it is a journey and a
process, not a destination, or a product. Never stop activating monk mode and take as much time as you
want. This is because your only competition is yourself. To enjoy good hell, to bring true happiness
to one's family, to bring peace to all, one must first discipline and control one's own mind.
When we talk about monk mode, we don't necessarily mean going into a monastery or becoming part of a
It means adopting the life of a monk and applying it to various areas of your life.
This way of living involves cutting off distractions to live your best life.
Essentially, it means trimming the excess, the unnecessary weight that you carry.
This is done to help you live more productively and engage in deep work.
It helps you achieve your goals and get you to know yourself better.
All of these are achieved through sacrifices of certain parts of your daily life, increased self-awareness
and contemplation. When you practice the monk mode of life, you will have to sacrifice your social life,
as well as other things, so that you can improve in other areas of your life, from overcoming bad habits
to hitting fitness goals and reaching business targets. But let's be honest, settling into monk mode
seems like an expensive joke.
So, you mean no fun, no social life, all for a bit of personal transformation and deep work?
Yep, that's the benefit of the offer.
However, you are not seeing the whole picture or the entire iceberg, just the tip of it.
While your social life may suffer, it is not the only thing that will.
You might end up quitting video games, social media, junk food, sugary drinks, and a number
of other online addictions that may arise.
Here's the good news.
Over the years, practicing monk mode
helps you achieve great results and also transforms your life.
This, when compared to what you have to give up,
is a really worthy deal.
So, this part is not to suggest that you pack up all that you have
or go live as a hermit somewhere on a mountain for two years
or to leave your partner, quit your job, shut down your life, or even ditch all your friends in the practice.
The main objective of monk mode is to transform and improve your life.
Why would you go into monk mode?
You would likely go into monk mode if you are unhappy with yourself or with your career.
Those who practice monk mode do so for self-development reasons or purposes.
They seek to be the best version of themselves, not merely physical,
physically, but mentally. The aim is simple, to become better. The methods are grueling, cutting
off several vices from your life, taking time out to be more productive, spending fewer hours
on social media, filling the hours you would usually waste with healthy habits and things
that are beneficial and productive for you. You have heard about the story of the caterpillar,
becoming a beautiful butterfly, right? If you haven't heard it, here is an abridged
version. One day, the caterpillar built a small house around himself, called a cocoon. After staying in it
for more than two weeks, the caterpillar nibbled a hole in the cocoon and came out. He came out as a
beautiful butterfly. He had turned into the most beautiful butterfly on the earth with multi-colored
wings. Entering into monk mode is just like becoming a beautiful butterfly after being in your
self-development cocoon. You stay isolated for a period of time in deep work in order for you to grow
and then emerge transformed. The first thing that you need to learn when attempting to live the monk mode
is to consider a plan for it. How intense are you going to go with monk mode? Are you going to go the
extra mile? Take it to the extreme. Cut off all distractions from your life. Meditate for days at a time. Isolating.
yourself for months, carefully consider your approach. It may seem hard, but trust me, you will
manage. Next, after deciding on the intensity which you want to give it, it becomes clear how much
time and effort you're going to devote to it. Now, it is typical that having a more intense
schedule will actually demand more effort, time, and discipline. So, if you consider an extreme
approach, it is best to block out how much time you're going to devote each day to it.
If not, you will find out that you're not able to manage your time well, and you'll get
overwhelmed by the task you have in front of you. Also, it is important that you choose the
period of time you are going to be in your monk mode for. The minimum time for this is a month.
This is because anything less can really make it hard for any real change and transformation
to happen. Is there a maximum time? No, there isn't. So go all out for it till you see visible
changes and keep at it. Do not become so complacent after a victory. Do not forget your end goal in
mind. Motivation is that drive that either makes you or breaks you once you enter monk mode.
So it is important to have a lot of it, or you will eventually give up. Let the motivation you begin with be
the one that drives you till the very end. It will inevitably drop at times, but it is your job to pick it
back up and go harder. This is why it's important to have a purpose, to have a why, a purpose and a why
to draw on for motivation and inspiration. Find out what your purpose and your why is before you start,
and always find a way to keep reminding yourself of it, whether it is affirming it to yourself daily
or drawing a vision board up on the frame that you see each morning.
It is not just about having a plan, but also following it.
Having a plan and following it helps guide you through your entire monk mode period.
Haven't we all been there?
We know that we are supposed to be doing something productive,
but because we do not have a plan on how to go about it,
we feel loose and slack and never get anything done.
We order takeout because there is no one to tell us otherwise except ourselves,
or we skip that exercise session for the same reason.
Write your goals down, make them into a plan.
Let them be something real that can motivate you and that you can hold yourself accountable to.
Mental work is going to be your major investment in monk mode,
and oftentimes one can get too cerebral with it to forget that there needs to be a break.
That is where exercise comes in.
This is a great way to take a break from all the philosophical thinking and self-reflection.
You will win, no matter how small they are.
Ensure that you celebrate all of them.
This is known as positive reinforcement.
It goes a long way in creating positive habits.
Praise yourself for your victories and make it a practice.
Journaling is a great way to track transformation and also ensure that
you learn as much as possible from the training regime you are undergoing.
It helps you remember your newly ingrained wisdom after you delve out to monk mode.
It will also help you unravel your own insights presently.
It is an indicator of how much you have improved.
It takes you off your high horse and makes you look at how pathetic your old life was
as you walk steadily to your new life.
When all is said and done, you have to ask yourself this question.
Is monk mode really worth it?
It will be tough, but the answer is yes.
If you're looking for ways to transform your life, then monk mode is for you.
It may be quite drastic, but it is highly effective, and that cannot be denied.
It will work because you work, and you will become more productive at the end of the day than you ever have.
The battle between distraction and concentration.
Concentrate all your thoughts upon the work at hand.
The sun's rays do not burn until brought to a focus.
Alexander Grand Bell
The battle between distraction and concentration is fundamentally a battle for attention.
Whatever you give your attention to controls it.
If you are focusing on one task and get distracted or interrupted,
it takes an average of 23 minutes to regain the same level of focus.
Our culture is peculiarly characterized by constant pursuits of distracted entertainment.
Consider our fascination with Instagram reels, YouTube shorts, Facebook videos, and TikTok.
These platforms provide quick and easy access to endless entertainment capturing our attention effortlessly.
In fact, scientists have shown that we often encourage interruptions and distractions due to factors such as an inability to set personal boundaries,
boredom, job insecurities, and most prominently FOMO, the fear of missing out.
Can we be entirely blamed? Not really, because we live in a world deeply entrenched within the
matrix of social media, making it difficult to disengage without intentional effort.
When you switch task, your focus or attention doesn't immediately follow.
Instead, a residue of thought remains on the original task.
How do you increase personal productivity?
There are three crucial elements to consider.
Attention management and time blocking.
These techniques help you set boundaries by scheduling your time thoughtfully
to ensure undistracted and undivided focus.
Think of it like this.
You schedule meetings with colleagues and your boss,
and you block time on your calendar for personal task,
like checking emails only at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. daily,
and nothing else.
You might also set a timer to check social media for no more than 30 minutes once daily.
The mere suggestion might make you cringe if you're addicted, signaling withdraw symptoms.
If so, you're on the right track to reclaiming your life.
According to Adam Grant, a Wharton professor,
attention management is the art of focusing on getting things done for the right reasons,
in the right places, and at the right moments.
While unplugging might not eliminate all distractions, a retreat can.
Whether done corporately or personally, retreats provide a space for innovation, strategy, and new ideas.
These sessions are typically held in environments where distractions are minimized,
essential for aspiring leaders and personal development enthusiasts,
who need a conducive space to think and create the future.
Without such a space, you risk a life mired in distraction.
repeating past mistakes rather than focusing on future possibilities.
We are generally sleep deprived because we live in the gap between what we feel we can do and what we know we should do.
The essentials like sleeping more, focusing on one task at a time and slowing down, are obvious yet often ignored.
So, how do you change course?
By moving in the opposite direction of the problem.
Make yourself a priority starting today.
ensuring you can perform better for those you care about.
If you're still unsure about making these changes, sleep on it.
The battle between distraction and concentration is ongoing,
but the solution is always about where you direct your attention.
Invest in yourself by practicing monk mode.
Commit to setting boundaries for your attention,
to slowing down rather than speeding up,
and to retreating to discovering personal victories
and see beyond the distractions that dominate your life.
Attention is the key to personal productivity.
Your effectiveness in life and impact at work and within your family hinge on it.
Do not let the distractions of this world take away your most prized asset.
Your attention.
Whatever a monk keeps pursuing with his thinking and pondering,
that becomes the inclination of his awareness.
Sigarta Gautama.
Monk mode is that period of enhanced productivity, discipline, and focus,
where you dedicate yourself to achieve and complete a goal.
When you are in monk mode, you place it upon yourself to adopt the self-discipline
regimen, practice, and isolation of the monks.
In contemporary times, practicing a monk life lifestyle has been made famous for self-development.
It is defined as an attempt to cope with denying ourselves of plunkers,
pleasures, activities, and situations, to pursue our goals for growth and gain back control of our
emotional life. To create a routine, learning the strategies that a monk mode has can help you get
a much clearer understanding of how it can be done. When you have a clearer picture of how to
practice monk mode, you begin to structure your life in a way that makes you become the best
version of you. The monk mode is based on three core structures.
that we love to term as the three eyes.
Improvement, isolation, introspection.
Improvement is the act of formulating a plan of action
to tackle that which needs to be done.
Isolation is the process of giving yourself some freedom and space
to acknowledge your goals, desires, and weaknesses.
It means separating and freeing yourself
from so many obligations that only weigh you down.
Introspection is the art of honing your focus.
This means looking inwards to inspect and examine your emotions and thoughts.
As a result of this, you learn a whole lot about yourself and learn more about who you are.
This makes you identify your strengths, goals, and weaknesses, and to also accept them.
Before we go into the process of creating a monk mode routine, here are the benefits of monk mode.
It is flexible.
You only have to do what it is that works for you.
It creates a boost in your overall happiness.
This helps you to break off the shackles of harmful habits
by providing you with several opportunities
to reset the behaviors and patterns you are already used to.
Physical health improvement, clarity and discernment,
increased empathy that also helps you build healthy
and strong relationships with people.
It gives you more confidence.
It helps you gain more mental focus and clarity.
Creating a monk mode plan.
Monk mode is quite similar to fasting.
This means that you can practice for 30 days or less or even more.
If you keep on practicing, you may begin to find it much easier to extend your time frame for practicing your monk mode plan.
With that said, when you have extended periods of monk mode, you can get better results.
Usually, it is best to aim to practice monk mode for a minimum of one to three months.
Also, remember that a monk mode plan depends heavily on the specific goal that you plan on achieving,
and also on how long you think it will take for you to achieve it.
One thing you need to pay attention to is that time and intensity are two key factors that need to be considered when you create your plans.
Time is the schedule you give to your monk mode and can be in any of the following.
Intermittently.
This may be going off for a while and coming back to intensify your actions to reach a certain goal,
then taking it slow for a while and cooling off.
Then, when you have another goal or milestone or project to work on,
you go into monk mode again.
Seasonal.
This means taking a few months to invest in monk mode and act.
After the months are exhausted, you go back to normal for the rest of the year.
Weekly.
Choosing a few days of the week or just the weekend to isolate and go into monk mode can also be one of the days to choose.
Hourly.
You can also block out hours in a day for some personal transformation or deep work.
Intensity.
This is defined by the degree of how extreme you want to go.
For example, low intensity may mean cut.
cutting off some minor activities, such as partying or going to the cinema,
while high intensity may mean cutting off from every form of socialization,
including social media platforms.
A typical monk mode routine may look like this.
5 a.m.
You are awake at this time.
You practice your morning meditation and follow it up with some stretching.
6.30 a.m.
At this time, you start doing your daily work for the next two hours.
9 a.m. Take a second stretching exercise. 10 a.m. do some meditation again. 11 a.m. get into two hours of solid and deep work.
1 p.m. to 2 p.m. eat your only meal for the day. 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. allow the meal to digest and rest for an hour.
3.30 p.m. go for another stretch. 4 p.m. do two more hours of deep work.
6 p.m. exercise. 7 p.m. meditate. 8 p.m. go to bed. This routine ensures that every hour of the day is purposeful. Of course, you can tailor this routine to fit your specific needs and preferences.
Monk mode is a period of extreme focus and dedication. When you start cutting off different aspects of your lifestyle, you're able to concentrate on specific goal.
Rather than multitasking, focus your attention on one specific goal and commit yourself fully to it.
This ensures you avoid burnout.
Implement a system using a calendar to mark each day.
These markings provide a visual representation of your progress.
It's essential to track your progress somewhere.
Write down the task you've completed each day, as this will help you stay on course and maintain focus for longer periods.
Being in monk mode is not always easy, but discipline facilitates it.
With discipline, each day is charged with motivation.
While some habits are challenging to break, with commitment, you can achieve substantial progress.
Common habits to eschew for true discipline in monk mode include unhealthy or frivolous personal relationships,
unhealthy eating habits, excessive socializing and partying, indulging in movies, cable TV,
or any form of non-productive entertainment, as well as gaming and social media.
Practicing these can dramatically alter the course of your life.
Creativity itself doesn't care at all about results.
The only thing it craves is the process.
Learn to love the process and let whatever happens next happen without fussing too much about it.
Work like a monk or a mule or some other representative metaphor for,
for diligence. Discipline is something that many have tried and have strived to practice,
but few have mastered. This is because mastering mental discipline is harder than we think.
There is an age-long quest that your coaches and teachers would have pushed you on,
and that is the quest for discipline. For a lot of people, mental discipline is the pot of leprechaun
gold that is seen at the end of the rainbow or a shiny goal in the distant future that cannot
be achieved. The distant future is that time we have projected for ourselves where we finally
master our imperfect and messy selves. For some others, discipline is the measuring stick we use
to judge ourselves, our actions, and our characters. Sometimes we confuse it with willpower,
and like we do most of the time, we fall short of it.
Now, learning discipline is neither a yardstick used to measure oneself with others,
nor is it a destination to get to.
It is a practice, a process, a lifestyle, a journey.
A practice never ends.
A process never ends.
A lifestyle is until death.
A journey is to the end.
However, we get much better with each day.
Our mental discipline, well-being, personal habits, upbringing, and present situations or circumstances
impact the way we handle ourselves. Learning how to be mentally disciplined is something that
requires intentional practice, the same intentional practice that you would put into things
like facing your fears or self-love. Now, while it may look like an insurmountable mountain,
getting better at it is something that you can always do. With enough practice,
you can learn how to work with who and what you are presently,
and what you need to develop the mental discipline that will be beneficial to you and your goals.
Discipline is the art of adhering to certain rules and behaviors.
The concept of mental discipline is much similar to what is a twist.
The twist is that you turn your efforts internally and train yourself to control your mind and behavior.
Discipline often is not without its twist.
and this implies that there are regimens, punishments, rigid rules, and, of course, obedience.
However, you need to learn how to build mental discipline without tearing yourself down.
As much as discipline is not about tearing yourself down, it is also not about having little to no compassion for yourself.
While we may think that self-imposed punishments and threats are great and effective for building discipline, they are not.
Mental discipline is a soft skill, and this means that it can be applied in a wide array of situations and settings.
Improving your mental discipline also improves your will.
You cannot have one without having the other.
Mental discipline centers around exercising restraint and maintaining control.
Your will is that inner response to mental discipline, and it refers to being able to push yourself to the limit and more.
Mental discipline is an ability that you have to hone, and you must hone.
It is birth from creating routines and habits that will inevitably make you practice it.
At the start, establishing the structures and routines to develop mental discipline may hurt and take a lot of effort, but with time, you will get it.
That's the secret, time.
With time, you can build mental discipline, and while you are building it, your life changes.
in so many ways. Here are ways to build discipline. Jot down your goals. Write out where you want to be in the next two,
five or ten years. Hang it somewhere in your room or house. Make it visible so that you will see it each day.
This is because visual reminders serve as powerful motivators. Mental discipline encourages you to set
intellectual, academic, or professional goals. You are able to identify and also plan how to achieve
them. Start by setting small goals and with that, you'll get less overwhelmed and more confident.
Prioritize. Have an action plan or make a to-do list that helps you stay organized, feel accomplished, and be
productive. Start with the ugliest frog burst. Put the most demanding or the least exciting
responsibilities at the top and do them first. Then put your best energy into your priorities,
and do not sweat the small stuff. Change your mindset. Are you of the mindset that you cannot do it?
Change it. Expecting a person to do something or a situation to turn out in a certain manner
is akin to a self-fulfilling prophecy, as it usually does happen. Your mindset is everything. It determines what you do,
and how you move forward.
You will stumble.
That is a given.
And it's okay to stumble.
Focus on doing better when you make a mistake.
Learn from that mistake and always stay positive.
Know your weaknesses.
Knowing that you have weaknesses and acknowledging that you struggle is the first step to
changing the habits you have.
Be extra proactive.
If you know that the TV, other apps, or music will distract you,
learn to turn them off.
while you are studying. If you have multiple plans for the weekend and also need to catch up on work,
you need to reschedule. Do not be the one to get in your way and do not make yourself out to be something
you're not. Have a backup. After creating an action plan, create a backup plan. This is because
things may fall through. So, instead of worrying about what happens after the car veers off the road,
your backup will help you get right back on track.
This keeps you motivated, focused, and organized to work on your goals.
You deserve nothing less than to live your best life and to be your best self.
So, acquire the mental discipline you need and do what you have to do.
Start slowly but surely and get it done.
Solitude is the soil in which genius is planted.
creativity grows and legends bloom.
Faith in oneself is the rain that cultivates a hero to endure the storm
and bear the genesis of a new world, a new forest, Mike Norton.
