My name is Mike, and we're just spending a few minutes every day learning about what God says about himself and what God says about us.
Starting point is 00:00:38 And spoiler alert, God says he is love, and you are the object of that love. We're talking about identity theft this summer, and we started a discussion yesterday about how a stupid piece of reflective glass can really mess with our identity. The lies start coming. You're so ugly. You're so fat. You're so weak. You're so worthless.
Starting point is 00:00:57 You're so undiscipline. You are so. well, just look at you. We talked yesterday about how it's important to really know what God says, so that when the lies start coming, we already have the truth stuck in our heart. So let's add this one the day. Not only do you need to know what God says, you got to see how God sees. You got to see how God sees.
Starting point is 00:01:19 You know, it's one thing to look beautiful. It's another one to be beautiful. You ever seen somebody who you thought was just like drop dead gorgeous, super handsome, them, hot even, and then you get to know a little bit about them, and they're not so attractive anymore? You see, true beauty, real handsomeness is an inside-out kind of thing. At least that's the way God sees it. There's a story about a time God chooses the least likely guy named David to be the
Starting point is 00:01:44 king of Israel, and people are scratching her heads because he didn't look the part, and God says this, the Lord does not look at things human beings look at. people look at the outward appearance but the Lord looks at the heart now I'm really going to date myself right now but anybody remember the old show Sanford and Son
Starting point is 00:02:03 you may be seen it like on TV land on cable television it's about this old guy was a junk dealer he was always grabbing his heart like he's having a heart attack this is the big one this big one I never thought I would do this but can I quote Fred Sanford I'm going to anyway
Starting point is 00:02:19 he said this beauty is skin deep but ugly goes all the way to the bone. I never thought of it, quote him. You know what? He's not far off, really. I mean, you can go out with someone who's physically attractive, and then you watch how they treat the servers at the restaurant, or you notice how they talk about other people,
Starting point is 00:02:37 or how they talk about themselves at the time, and you think, you know what, old Fred Sanford is right. If we're going to get a handle on this whole beauty, obsession, body image deal, we're going to have to start to see how God sees. I saw someone post this the other day two steps to having a beach body. Number one, have a body. Number two, go to the beach. That's simple.
Starting point is 00:03:01 Hey, check out this verse from 1 Peter chapter 3. It says this, your beauty or your handsomeness should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes. Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight. Now, did that say not to fix your hair? Did it say you shouldn't moisturize your skin? Did it say you shouldn't work out and wear cool clothes or jewelry?
Starting point is 00:03:30 No, all that stuff's totally okay. It simply said that your beauty, your handsomeness, should not originate from there. It's always an inside-out kind of thing. We have a little, like a hobby-loby-loby-looking sign hanging in our bathroom. And the words from F. Scott Fitzgerald, I love it. It says she was beautiful for the way she thought. She was beautiful for the sparkle in her eyes when she talked about something she loved. She was beautiful for her ability to make other people smile, even if she was sad.
Starting point is 00:04:03 No, she wasn't beautiful for something as temporary as her looks. She was beautiful down deep in her soul. Yeah, I'm not the most fashionable guy in the world. I'm not a student of trends and such. Most of my clothes come from thrift stores these days. days I'm into comfort, and I'm sure someday, to the embarrassment of my kids, I'll fall completely off the fashion train. I'll pull my pants up to my armpits and get shoes with peltro ties. So for me to give fashion tips is a bit laughable. But did you know the word of God is some timeless fashion tips? These are the hot new trends for this summer. Actually, these never go out of
Starting point is 00:04:39 style and work for every season. That same guy we've been talking about. Paul writes this, So chosen by God for this new life of love. Dress and the Wardrobe God, picked out for you. Compassion, kindness, humility, quiet, strength, discipline. Be even tempered, content with second place, quick to forgive an offense. Forgive as quickly and completely as the master forgave you. And regardless of what else you put on, wear love, it's your basic all-purpose garment. Never be without it. Wouldn't it be cool if we started helping each other out with this inside-out perspective by saying, whoa, I got to tell you, man, that humility looks really, really good on you or you look so hot in that courage you're looking fine in that forgiveness i love the way kindness
Starting point is 00:05:24 just hangs on you that gentleness it fits you so well and we start helping each other see as god sees from the inside out that we notice the right things about people today and maybe even let them know what you see and begin to see yourself the way god sees you and let yourself know as well see you back tomorrow in today.
