And now let's dive in to today's devotional.
Hey, welcome to the podcast. My name is Mike Brough, and I'm thrilled that you would take the time to tune in a day. We just take a few minutes every weekday and dive into God's Word and just ask Him to speak to us. And while it's true that there is historical context with which the Bible was written, I'm telling you, it is still as fresh and relevant as it ever was. It's alive, and it lands on us in a deeply personal way. And I hope you're experiencing that. Well, we're unpacking a little letter called Colossians.
It was written by a man named Paul who was chosen by God to plant churches all over the place,
and a bunch of the New Testament are made up of these letters that he writes to brand-new Jesus followers.
And this particular church was in a small city called Colossay,
and it was really making a difference, doing a bunch of good stuff.
They were being known all over the place for their love for other people.
It was such a good bunch of people.
Now, whenever good things start happening like it was for these people, the enemy shows up.
I heard an old Kentucky preacher say one time,
when a door of opportunity opens,
the flies always come in too.
So as Paul and his team
planted these new churches, the flies,
these false teachers, would always
show up and try to derail
the movement. There was a certain group known as the
Judaizers. They were the same group of guys who wanted Jesus
dead. They would show up, and they would
try to convert these non-Jewish believers
over to their rituals and their rules and their
customs. And then there were these
intellectual knowledge of
guy, known as the Gnostics, who would show up and say, all right, well, this Jesus sounds like a
pretty good guy, but he's definitely not the answer to life. He is not enough. He's just a man.
You need to be enlightened with all kinds of supernatural knowledge of the universe. There are all
kinds of people trying to lead them away from their faith in Jesus Christ alone. So Paul writes in
verse four, I'm telling you this, so that no one will deceive you with well-crafted arguments.
He goes on to basically tell them and us, hey, listen,
You need to know this. Jesus is enough. Jesus is God, and God's plan has always been a Jesus plus nothing else plan.
Skip down to verse 8. It says this, don't let anyone capture you with empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers of this world rather than from Christ.
Let me read that again. Don't let anyone capture you with empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers of this world rather than from Christ. Let me read that again.
Don't let anyone capture you with empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers of this world rather than from Christ.
These are verses that our kids memorized, and they would recite them at the breakfast table before they went off to school.
We were living in Las Vegas at the time, and they would sit there around the breakfast table with their nutritious pop-tarts, brown sugar, frosted ones, they're the best.
And before we would eat and before they'd leave for school, we'd probably.
as a family. And they would recite
this verse. Don't let anyone capture you
with empty philosophies and high-sounding
nonsense that come from human thinking
and from the spiritual powers of this world
rather than from Christ. We just
wanted them as they went to school
to look at the world through the lens
of Jesus. That their worldview
would be set on the one that Paul said
was the source of all wisdom
and truth, that they would have a strong
foundation, and they would have this truth
filter through which to process the
things that they were going to hear and things that they were going to
see. And Paul is telling them, these readers and us, don't fall for all that trendy stuff that
might sound impressive, but it's got no credibility. It's got no truth source whatsoever,
because there is no other truth source than the one who created us. And man, I know there's a
lot of stuff out there right now that sounds really, really good on the surface. I mean,
trendy things like, hey, man, you do you, you know. Just follow your heart. Well, whatever's
true for you, might not be true for me, whatever's true for you, might not be true for me.
Let your feelings guide your life. Just, come on, man. Just follow your heart. And it all
sounds good, doesn't it? But did you know that the Bible says that the human heart is the most
deceitful thing going? And you've probably experienced like I have every time I let my feelings
and my appetites lead my life every time I decide to let myself be my own truth source. I get lost,
man and people get hurt.
And so today, maybe like our kids did years ago, just stick these verses in your heart
today.
Don't let anyone capture you with empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense that come
from human thinking and from the spiritual powers of this world rather than from Christ.
Today, let Jesus be your truth source.
He is enough.
We see you next time.
Thanks for tuning in today.
