And now let's dive in to today's devotional.
Hey, welcome to the podcast. I'm Mike Bro, an honor to get to spend a few minutes with you each weekday,
just asking God to stick some truth, some wisdom, and some hope in our hearts. And we're currently
walking through a little letter in the New Testament called Philippians. And we are in Chapter 2.
If you missed any of the previous episodes, it won't take you along to catch you up, or you can just jump
right in the day and start tracking with us, just trying to keep this pretty simple, this format.
So thanks for joining us. We started unpacking this amazing section of scripture that reason
like a song. Now I'm sure you have a playlist that you listen to. I've got a mix of worship music,
old school country, Motown, smooth jazz, 70s rock, today's hits, you name it. I like a variety of
music. And if you're a regular church goer, you probably have a favorite, like, worship song.
I certainly do. But this section in Philippians 2 needs to be on your playlist. It was one of the early
church's favorite worship songs because it reminded them to embrace the humility of Jesus.
And I don't know the melody, but the lyrics are life-changing. The section,
begins this way. Philippians chapter 2, verse 5, you must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had.
Now, we talked about this last time, how one of the most powerful things at work in your life and
mind is the power to choose. This is saying out of all the choices you will make this day,
choose to embrace the same mindset, the same attitude, the same radical approach to humility
that Jesus chose. Every other choice you make today will flow out of that one.
Verse 6, though he was God, he did not think of it.
equality with God is something to cling to.
Now, that phrase, though he was God, in the Greek word, is morpha, which means the essence.
So this doesn't mean that Jesus was sort of like God, or that Jesus had a few godly characteristics,
so from time to time he was able to pull off a little bit of supernatural magic.
No, no, no, no, no.
Who being in the very essence, God.
John 1 tells us that from the beginning, he was God, is God.
Jesus is the creator and sustainer of all things.
Colossians chapter 1 says all things, all things were created by him and for him.
He is before all things and in him all things hold together.
He was, is God in the flesh, God incarnate, fully God, the great I am.
And even though Jesus being in very nature, God, the very essence God,
he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to.
Again, Jesus made a choice.
He said, even though it could,
I'm not going to cling to my divine rights, even though I could.
I'm not going to power up on people.
Even though it all actually is, I'm not going to clench my fist and hold tightly to what is rightfully mine.
I'm going to open up my hands, let it go, lay my ego on the altar, and fully surrender to the will of my father.
Verse 7. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges.
He took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being.
Now think about it.
Jesus came and is about as much obscurity as somebody possibly could,
starting with mangers and shepherds and cow manure.
He grew up as a carpenter's son, a little bit he hicked down, framing houses.
He lived in obscurity for almost 30 years.
There was no grandiosity at all in Jesus.
He gave up his divine privileges and came as a humble servant to reveal who God really is.
And maybe just maybe that's what we could focus on doing today.
I mean, what if we just chose to give up what we feel,
feel or our rights and just humbly serve somebody today.
To choose today to embrace the mindset of Jesus and move through this day as a servant.
Maybe today at work, at school, at home, in the neighborhood, on the field, on the court,
in traffic, we too can reveal, like Jesus did, what God is like.
So what do you say we set aside pride and ego today and just follow our leader?
I'm praying for you today as you do that.
See you back next time.
