And now let's dive in to today's devotional.
Hey, welcome to the Daily Drive.
My name is Mike Bro, and we hang here Monday through Friday, just diving into God's Word and pursuing him.
And lately, we've been looking at some song lyrics that are found in the Bible in a book called the Book of Psalms.
Most are written by a guy named David, and the lyrics are so good.
They're real, they're raw, the poetic, they're beautiful, they're vulnerable, inspirational, engaging, and extremely relevant.
They are timeless classics, inspired by the Holy Spirit of God.
and we've been downloading a few of those songs into our hearts.
Some of you all might be in a boating and might be doing some of that this summer.
And no matter whether you're on a lake or a river or out in the ocean,
if you don't drop and set anchor, drift happens.
Some of my Southern California surfing friends know that
if you don't pay attention while you're laying flat on your board,
drift happens and you can end up in places you just do not want to be.
And it's been my experience that we all have a tendency to drift in life.
We can drift in our purpose, in our passion.
We can drift in our relationship with each other, in our intimacy with God.
And the thing about drifting is that it happens gradually.
Many times we don't even notice until one day we look up and we're nowhere close to where we thought we were or where we should have been.
So the key is to be anchored.
Anchored to truth, anchored to wisdom, anchored to consistent and healthy practices,
anchored to love, anchored to the rock-solid one, Jesus Christ, who is the same yesterday.
today and forever, the one who never changes, never shifts, and never drifts.
Now, I know that some of you might have just graduated from high school or college and you're
wondering about your future.
So let me repeat something we say around here a lot.
God's will for your life is much more about who you are than what you do or where you go.
Our internal character is what matters most to God.
His plan is to shape you and me into the right kind of people so that wherever we end up,
We will be the right person in that place.
So I'm learning that before you ever ask, where am I going?
You have to first ask, how did I get here?
Without a clear and honest look at current reality, you and I will just continue to drift.
Everyone in recovery knows the power of taking what's called a fearless moral inventory.
Step 4 of the 12 steps all about getting at root causes, looking at character defects,
taking a fearlessly honest look at your life while asking the question,
where am I right now?
And how in the heck did I get here?
I'm at that age where I'm losing stuff, phone, wallet, keys.
I mean, come to think of it, I've been doing that since I was 13, so maybe it's not an age thing.
But when that happens, you know the strategy, right?
No, it's not, Alexa, where are my keys?
You do what?
You retrace your steps.
You go, okay, I was in this room, then I walked in here, and I saw the remote on the floor,
and I put it back on the coffee table, and I told myself not to forget to go pick up my daughter at school,
but I wanted a snack to take with me, so I walked in the kitchen,
and open the fridge, well, there's my keys
right next to the shredded cheese, right?
I mean, that's what you do.
You retrace how you got to where you are.
That's what an honest inventory is all about.
And you pray this little prayer that we have read a ton
here on the podcast, but it comes from one of David's Psalms.
Psalm 139, verse 23 and 24, he writes,
search me, oh God, and know my heart.
Test me and know my anxious thoughts.
Point out anything in me that offends you
and lead me along the path of everlasting life.
You pray, okay, God, how did I get here?
Because I'm sure I've drifted.
How did it happen?
What contributed to the drift away from you?
Away from joy, away from health,
away from my spouse, away from real friendship,
away from intimacy, away from passion.
What do you see?
God, how did I get here?
You know, whenever I've prayed that,
Search me, O God, prayer, and I try to pray it frequently.
And I ask Him, God, how did I get here?
I almost always find myself saying, you know what?
You're right, God.
I drifted because I stopped doing that, and I started doing this.
So here's your assignment just for today.
You pray that prayer, search me, oh God, why have I drifted?
What is contributing to the slow fade?
What are some things that maybe I stopped doing that is causing me to drift?
Reveal that to me, God.
So just pray that prayer today.
And then tomorrow, we're going to start unpacking some of the reasons we drift,
and we're going to see another great song that I think just might help us a lot.
Hope you have a great day. I'll see you back here tomorrow.
Thanks for tuning in today.
