I'm Mike Bro, and we are walking through some of the highlights in the book of Acts, and today we come to an amazing story. You know, I've always liked movies like Shawshank Redemption, Escape from Alcatraz, the fugitive, where somebody plans and executes like a prison break, digging a tunnel with a spoon, or crawling through sewage pipes, or fleeing a bus crash, even Blake Shelton's song about using a lovesick hound dog named Old Red to escape from the warden. Now, I'm certainly not advocating for or condoning prison breaks, but they are fascinating stories of people who are longing for freedom.
Starting point is 00:01:06 In Acts chapter 16, we see a prison break, the top all prison breaks. It's not premeditated with intricate plans and timing. It's all orchestrated in a moment by the Holy Spirit of God. Now, we've already seen one of these involving Peter back in chapter 12, and this one involves Paul and his new partner Silas. The author of this book Luke is along for this particular journey as denoted by his use of we and he introduces us to a guy named Timothy, a young guy who eventually would become like a protege of Paul and a businesswoman named Lydia who would become one of the founders of the church in the city of Philippi. Let me just read what Luke writes in verses 16 through 18.
Starting point is 00:01:47 Once, when we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a female slave who had a spirit by which she predicted the future. She earned a great deal of money for her owners by fortune-telling. She followed Paul and the rest of us shouting, These men are servants of the Most High God, who are telling you the way to be saved. She kept this up for many days. Finally, Paul became so annoyed that he turned around and said to the Spirit, In the name of Jesus Christ, I command you to come out of her.
Starting point is 00:02:16 And at that moment, the Spirit left her. Now, even though she was telling the truth about who they were, she was doing so by the power of the dark side to confuse the people because most in that culture believed that the most high God was Zeus. So it was really messing with Paul's message. So Paul confronts not her but the spirit of darkness in her. He doesn't confront her but the evil spirit in her and commands it to leave her.
Starting point is 00:02:43 And it does. And this girl was set free. Now you would think the people would be happy for her, right? Yeah, not so much. When the owners of the slave girl realized that she was useless to them now, that their cash flow from their personal psychic hotline had been cut off, they grab Paul and Silas, they whip up the crowd into a frenzy and demand that these two be arrested.
Starting point is 00:03:06 Well, they're arrested, and they're severely beaten, and they're thrown in prison. They put them in the inner cell, they put their feet shackled in the stocks, and they posted a guard with them. So what do you do in a case like that? I mean, you're innocent of all the charges. You were beaten in jail for setting a young girl free. So what do you do? You make a call to your lawyer.
Starting point is 00:03:31 You look for something sharp to pick the lock. You start surveying the surroundings for possible weak spots. Well, you know what they decide to do? Sing and pray. I've never seen that in a prison break movie. It's around midnight, and all the prisoners are listening to the two of them worshipping God. And this is what happens in verse 26.
Starting point is 00:03:50 suddenly. There was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once, all the prison doors flew open, and everyone's chains came loose. The jailer woke up. When he saw the prison doors open, he drew a sword and was about to kill himself because he thought the prisoners had escaped. But Paul shouted, hey, don't harm yourself. We're all here. It seems that all the prisoners were so captivated by what was going on, that none of them actually ran. Verse 29. The jailer called for the lights, rushed in and fell to trembling before Paul and Silas. He brought them out and asked, sirs, what must I do to be saved? And they replied, believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.
Starting point is 00:04:33 Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all the others in his house, and at that hour of the night the jailer took them and washed their wounds, then immediately he and all of his household were baptized. You know what they do next? They go back to prison. Yeah. They go back. And in the morning they explain that they are Roman citizens whose rights have been violated, that they were unfairly beaten and imprisoned, and the magistrate falls all over himself apologizing and releases them and even gives them an escort back to Lydia's house. They stay there for a while encouraging all these new believers,
Starting point is 00:05:09 and that is how the church in Philippi got started. Because two guys were willing to sacrifice their freedom, a prominent businesswoman, a slave girl, and a prison guard are all set free by the power of the living God. I don't know what might have you in shackles and chains right now, but why not employ the same strategy as Paul and Silas? Sing, pray, worship, and just see what God might do in your life and in the lives of those around you.
Starting point is 00:05:40 See you back here tomorrow. Have a great day. Thanks for tuning in today.
