In this episode, let’s be reminded that our ultimate boss is not our earthly employer but God himself. It can be ...so easy to get caught up in the daily grind of work and forget that our ultimate purpose is to serve God. Whether we are a stay-at-home parent, teacher, server, or running a Fortune 500 company, we have the opportunity to glorify Him in all that we do. And now let's dive in to today's devotional.
Hey, what's up everybody?
Thanks for joining us on the daily drive.
Some of you actually might be driving right now.
So thanks for tuning in, or you might just be waking up, or you're hitting the gym,
or you're taking a walk, or doing a spin class, or you're getting ready for bed, wherever you are.
Man, it's so grateful for you and honored that you would give a few minutes today
to listen and hopefully draw closer to the one that loves you with an unfailing love.
We were currently in chapter three of a little letter called Colossians, and we left off last time
with the challenge to practice this countercultural, counterintuitive thing called mutual submission.
The writer of this letter, Paul, talked about how that plays out in a family with husbands and wives and parents and kids,
modeling the humility of Jesus.
And then at verse 22, he takes this idea to the workplace.
Now, before I read verse 22, I want to say that Paul, when he writes this, is not endorsing slavery,
as we have known it in our ugly history.
And some people through the years have perverted scriptures like this
to rationalize their own prideful and honestly very evil agenda.
It is heartbreaking the way some have justified their quest for power and superiority
by picking and choosing verses that are out of context with the character of God.
But rather, Paul is acknowledging the reality of life of these original readers of the letter
that were living in the Roman Empire.
It's just the way it was.
It wasn't right.
but he speaks to those who were forced to work hard.
So I take this to mean every employee, every employer out there.
Paul writes this, verse 22,
slaves obey your earthly masters in everything you do.
Try to please them all the time,
not just when they are watching you.
Serve them sincerely because of your reverent fear of the Lord.
You know when I read that?
I was thinking of the life of Joseph as a character back in the Old Testament.
I've heard his story.
You can find this story.
in Genesis 37 and follow me.
It's a cool story, but he's sold into slavery by his brothers.
Not exactly what he thought God had planned for his life,
but he decides just to bloom where he's planted.
And Joseph is just faithful to God in everything he does.
He works with integrity.
He has a great attitude, and over and over in his story it has said about him,
everyone could see that God was with him.
Now, wouldn't that be cool if the people we work with,
and people we work for
would say that about us.
Man, God is with him.
God is with her.
Paul goes on, verse 23,
work willingly at whatever you do,
as though you are working for the Lord
rather than for people.
I got a friend who ran into a buddy
that he went to grad school with.
The guy was a brilliant guy,
but he was working at McDonald's.
And he was closing the store one night,
this friend walked there,
they had a little small talk going on,
trying to catch up a little bit.
Then he just,
I couldn't help but asking him.
Dude, I'm like, what are you doing working here?
And the guy smiled and said, I'm mopping the floor.
Like Jesus is going to be the first customer to walk through tomorrow.
Paul writes, whatever you do, work at it with a great attitude and a strong work ethic,
as if you are working for the Lord, do it willingly, not complainingly,
and he'll make sure that you get rewarded in some way.
So some of you're getting ready to walk through the doors of your workplace today.
And maybe you're going to a job you're not super excited about.
and you're going to do some stuff
you really don't like doing
I've had plenty of jobs
like that or
truth is you might have a very difficult boss
and you don't make as much as you think you
should well you know what God
may move you on someday
but until that day
bloom where you're planted
work willingly at whatever you do
as though you're working for the Lord rather than
for people gang out of all the choices
we will make this day
our attitude is the one choice
that will make a huge difference.
So let's choose to go to work today, school, practice, home,
and bring a willing, helpful, gracious attitude with us
and just see what God might do.
See you tomorrow.
Thanks for tuning in today.
