And now let's dive in to today's devotional.
Hey, what's up y'all? So good to hang with you for a few minutes each day. Thanks for joining us together as we walk a new direction this year. Hey, we're just trying to keep a steady pace, trying to act justly, love mercy, and walk homely with God. And to do so, we're just hanging in some verses in the book of the Bible called Book of Romans. It's a letter just challenging us all to live a countercultural kind of life, the kind of life that makes people notice and make them say, man, whatever they got, I want that. They're just, I don't know, there's built different.
And chapter 12 of Roma begins with that challenge that not just conform to what everybody else around you is doing, but to be different.
And then Paul, the author, gets pretty descriptive of what different actually looks like.
He writes, starting in verse 9, love must be sincere.
Hate what is evil cling to what is good.
We unpack that the last couple of days.
And then he says this, we're down to verse 10 now.
He says, be devoted to one another in love.
Now, the word used there for love is that brotherly affection kind of love.
You know, I've got to be honest, I've never been a great hugger.
Anybody else?
I mean, I used to turn into a sheet of plywood when I saw a hugger coming toward me.
But as I've gotten older, especially coming out of the pandemic, I find myself wanting to hug everybody.
And what this verse is saying is that we should be devoted to each other with a, man, you're my brother, you're my sister, you can count on me, lean on me, kind of love.
It's a familia kind of love, and we are La Familia.
He continues this thought.
He says, be devoted to one another and brotherly love.
Honor one another above yourselves.
The word honor he uses here literally means to attach a high price tag, to look at each other and attach a high price tag to each other.
You know who does that really well?
Dogs.
Yeah.
We just got a new dog in our house.
He is so cool.
My mother-in-law named him a cricket, and he's just a cool little dog.
He's a lot of fun.
But I can walk outside and be gone for 30 seconds and walk back in the door, and he goes crazy.
He's like, oh, you're back.
You're jumping up and down.
He goes, oh, just touch me, you great man.
I mean, he just knows how to attach a high price tag to me.
So Paul is saying, listen, treat each other like a dog.
No, don't do that.
But honor one another above yourselves.
Attach a high price tag to each other because that's what it means to be built different.
If you're a husband, can I ask you honestly, how treasured does your wife feel these days?
I mean, how respected does your husband feel these days?
How priceless do your kids feel?
How priceless do your parents feel?
How priceless do your friends feel?
these days. So what if today? We could just think of somebody that needs to have a high price tag
attached to them and then intentionally today put them first to honor them above ourselves.
So let me just pray for you right now that I'm going to shut up and let you think of who that
person might be in your life today. Father, I pray that today we would be devoted to one another
in a family kind of love, an affectionate kind of love, that today, Father, Father,
Father, we would look for people to attach a high price tag to you, that everyone we would see,
we would know that you were someone that considers them absolutely priceless.
Help us to do the same.
Bring that person to our mind today.
And I pray all this in the name of Jesus.
Amen.
Have a great day.
Thanks for tuning in today.
