I thank God I was born on the good arms of the Midwest, and not on the battlefields of
the U.S.
It's a time of panic, and it's intercepted!
It's picked off right away!
Intercepted by Marty Hooker!
Pick six!
Eight seconds into the game!
Buffen sets up deep in the pocket, goes down the field for Smith!
Oh!
He's got it!
Smith!
Touchdown.
85 yards.
High on.
Touchdown, 10.
Taking a shot in the end zone.
It is caught.
No offense.
Touchdown.
That's either one or you have it.
Go ahead and three.
Yes.
Two-point lead for the Hawkeye Nation?

And on today's show, we do have a lot of stuff we want to cover, and this week in general
is going to be a very exciting week for the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast.
Today we're going to be breaking down that report that came out about a year ago,
but didn't really hit the news. No one really heard about it because the report wasn't officially
released. But Hawkeye Nation was able to get their hands on the report. And there's been a lot of
controversy among Hawkeye fans about how they feel about the report, how they feel about who's
reporting on the report. So we're going to talk about that. We're also going to be going through
some of the award list and breaking down some of the things that we've noticed from that.
And then if we do have time, we're going to break down the coaching rankings from 24-7
sports.
They just came out with coach rankings.
I don't agree with them at all.
So we're going to talk about that as well if we have an opportunity to.
If you are tuning into the show for the very first time today, though, make sure to like,
review, and subscribe.
Because like I said, this week is going to be a great week on the show for the very first time today, though, make sure to like, review and subscribe, because like I said, this week is going to be a great week on the show. On tomorrow's episode of
Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast, we got Mello Miller from the Stick to Football podcast hosted by
Bleacher Report. He's going to be hopping on the show to talk about his preseason rankings and what
he feels like is the ceiling for the Iowa Hawkeyes. It was a great conversation with the guy who is a
professional in the business.
I really enjoyed that conversation. I think you are too. Give you a little bit of a primer heading into this, hopefully this football season. On Thursday, we got Lucy Rodin,
Iowa's funniest woman in sports. She's going to be on the show. I know she was just on
Washed Up Walk-Ons not too long ago. That was not by design, but it is what it is.
And we're excited to have her on.
You're definitely going to get a different kind of interview on this show than maybe
you would have gotten on there.
Both are going to be great.
I enjoyed the washed up walk-ons interview, but I definitely highly recommend you checking
out this one as well on Thursday.
And then on Friday, we're going to be doing our typical Iowa coverage.
But first and foremost, we're going to be breaking down the Luka Garza decision.
Is he or is he not going to return to the Iowa Hawkeyes? He makes that decision on August 2nd.
So Friday, July 31st, it's our last show before he makes that decision on August 3rd.
We'll be breaking down what exactly that freaking means. Did he make that decision and what it means
for Iowa basketball? Right now,
Iowa basketball is listed in the top five of many people's top 25s. People assume that it is an easy
decision for Luka Garza to return to Iowa. I would biasly like to think that as well, but I'm not in
his position and he has offers that would entice anyone. So it does make it tough. He was actually also included on the list of combine invites.
105 people were included on that list.
And he was one of them.
NBA execs basically voted on who they wanted to be at the combine.
If there is a combine in person, Luka Garza was one of those people.
So, there are scouts that are interested in seeing what he's done.
There are scouts that are interested to see how he has improved his game.
You've seen the workouts from Luka Garza.
You've seen what he's been doing this summer with his dad
and with his training staff, and he has been putting in the work.
It sounds like he's gained 20 pounds of muscle,
dropped even more fat, got quicker,
worked even harder on the defensive side of the ball.
How much stock does the NBA take in that?
Right now, folks don't feel like he is a draft pick.
People feel like he's definitely going to be an undrafted player.
He theoretically could fall into the back end of the second round.
I think he has a skill set that could be productive in the NBA.
Defensively, it's probably the biggest weakness in his quickness.
People are concerned about his quickness and the fact that he's not is probably the biggest weakness and his quickness. People
are concerned about his quickness and the fact that he's not going to be able to use his,
I would call elusiveness and ability to contort his body to get the ball into the basket against
more athletic defenders. It might not be the easiest thing for him to do. So what does he
decide to do? And honestly, it's anyone's guess at this point.
It sounded like on an interview a couple months ago, Frank Garza did talk about how it would be awesome to see Luka return to Iowa and finish his career out there.
And how Luka could go down as one of the best players in Iowa basketball history.
But recently, Frank also said it's not an easy decision.
Who knows if there's a college basketball season?
How terrible would that be to have Luka return? There's a college basketball season? How terrible would that be to have Luka return?
There's no college basketball season.
He just wasted one year of his potential pro opportunity.
So I might guess they were hoping to be able to have a little bit more clarity on that prior to August 2nd.
But who knows at this point?
Who knows there's a college basketball season?
It does sound like there's obviously an NBA season right now.
There's going to be European basketball.
European countries are doing pretty well with COVID from that standpoint.
So there's an opportunity for him to go make money.
Maybe he takes that opportunity now and relies on the fact that he's continuing to develop and he will get his shot at some point.
So I don't think it's just a foregone conclusion that he's returning.
But I went a little bit in-depth to that.
So we're actually going to kind of switch up the show.
We're going to actually do hot takes on this Monday.
Not hot takes, but just kind of hot topics on this first segment of the Monday show.
And then on segment number two, we're going to break down that report.
And then on segment number three, we're going to be talking about the award list.
So like I said, we're kind of adapting as we go.
Got a little bit excited about the Luka Garza stuff.
Before I forget, make sure to follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram,
and like, review, and subscribe wherever you downloaded this podcast at.
And to wrap up some of the hot stuff coming up in Iowa news,
Samson Evans has announced a transfer destination.
He is transferring to Eastern Michigan.
He was not even on that 90-man kind of roster after the end of last season,
so it was expected he was going to transfer, did decide to ultimately transfer.
He's low down in that running back backfield or the running back room at this point.
So it wasn't kind of a surprise to see him go.
He is going to Eastern Michigan.
I wish him the best of luck.
I mean, this kid had a lot of promise coming out of Crystal Lake, Illinois.
A guy who was a quarterback technically, but an absolute beast on the field. Ran a 4.640 coming out of Crystal Lake, Illinois, a guy who was a quarterback technically, but
an absolute beast on the field, ran a four, six 40 coming out of high school.
I have no doubt in my mind, he could have, you know, maybe found a spot in Iowa, but
it does sound like, you know, when all that stuff was coming out about, you know, harassment
and racial bias and whatnot.
He even mentioned that there were some things along those lines as well with him.
So it'd be interesting to hear about that possibly as well, but best of luck to him. Former Iowa quarterback Jake Ruddock has
been released by the Miami Dolphins. Let's call it is what, you know, it is what it is. I honestly
am surprised he stuck around the NFL that long. I don't know how I was not impressed with him at
Iowa. I wasn't impressed with Michigan either. And so I don't know how the heck he stuck around that long.
But good for him.
He did have at least a taste of the NFL.
Maybe there will be another upstart football league that he can join and try to continue his career.
But to me, it probably seems like this is the end of the road for former Iowa quarterback Jake Ruddock.
So that being said, we cover some of the hot topics on today's show.
We're going to quickly take a break and then hop into segment number two. We're going to be talking about that report.
Before we do that though, I just want to remind you all to check out rockauto.com because it is
the place to go for your auto part needs. With the ever increasing number of makes and models,
honestly, going to a brick and mortar store is not the best experience you can get. They're
oftentimes not going to have the parts you need because they only have a limited amount of supply and stock.
They're going to need to oftentimes order it from their store. Anyways, you're also getting an up
charge because you're going through that store and you're dealing with kind of an interesting
scenario, especially if you're not a car person dealing with those people who honestly make you
feel kind of dumb. I hate going to auto part places because I feel like a freaking idiot.
I don't know exactly what I'm looking for.
I don't know exactly what kind of car I have.
So doing it from the safety and comfort of my office is very easy.
And rockauto.com is a place to do it at.
Rockauto.com is a family business serving auto parts customers online for 20 years.
Go to rockauto.com to shop for auto and body parts from hundreds of manufacturers.
They literally have everything for any kind of car, whether it's for my new Subaru in We'll see you next time. the brands, specifications, and prices you prefer. Best of all, prices at rockauto.com are always reliably low and the same for professionals
and do-it-yourselfers.
Why spend up to twice as much for the same parts at a brick-and-mortar store?
Go to rockauto.com right now and see all the parts available for your car or truck.
Write Locked On in their How Did You Hear About Us box so they know we sent you.
Amazing selection, reliably low prices, all the parts your car will ever need.
RockAuto.com.
We are back with segment number two of the Locked On Hawkeyes podcast.
And as I said, we're going to be talking about the report that came out alleging racial bias
within the Iowa football program.
And I want to quickly touch on one topic, and it's going to be a little bit controversial
and sensitive. It seems like Iowa fans think Rob Howe is out to get the Iowa football program.
And, you know, this might be a take that people don't agree with and that's okay. And I understand
if you don't feel that way. But I don't feel like Rob Howe is out to get Iowa football. I think he
honestly is trying to report both sides of what is happening.
Yes, is he retweeting literally everyone that has an opinion or a concern about the Iowa football program?
He is.
I think that's him doing his job, just showing the message.
I don't think he has an agenda to get rid of Kirk or to get rid of the Iowa football program.
Personally, that is my personal opinion.
If you don't agree with that, though, be polite to him.
Don't be a complete jerk on Twitter just because you can behind a keyboard.
I think that is so inappropriate, so unfortunate to have that happening.
And it's not fair to him either.
He's doing his job.
If you don't like it, don't read his stuff.
If you don't like him, that's okay.
Block him, unfollow him, whatever needs to do. But to continually harass the guy makes you no better than anyone else. And honestly makes you a lesser person for harassing him
online on Twitter. I think it's absolutely ridiculous. I've had people do that to me
from the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast. It doesn't feel good. And I'm not getting it even a one
iota close to what Rob Howe is getting it for Hawkeye Nation, whether or not you agree with him.
That being said, with this report, people kept bringing it up.
Why is he bringing this up so late?
Well, the fact is, Hawkeye Nation finally got a hold of the report.
The report was done internally at Iowa, and it alleges that there is racial bias within the Iowa football program. A couple of things that specifically notes is targeted
drug testing, verbal harassment, not the same resources available that were available or
mentioned during the recruiting process. The ideology of conforming to a white culture.
So, and it also talks about the fact that more black people have transferred or more black
athletes have transferred from Iowa than white athletes.
It's an interesting report because it does sound like Kirk Ferens and Gary Barta were aware of this report.
And there's been calls for them to be let go and resign and whatnot.
Even in the coaching thing, the 24-7 sports list of coaches, they mentioned that Kirk Farrens is on the hot seat because of this report.
I don't think that's actually the case.
I think he's doing what needs to be done now to fix the program.
Should he have done more before?
Probably.
But it does sound like there was not an identification specifically of a person or a group of people
that were doing these things.
It was more or less, I think what they took from it was that there is an
expectation to conform to that white culture. And, and it seems like Kirk did try to make a few
changes. Think about that, however you will, right? I mean, whether you think that was enough,
the right amount, or, you know, too little or too much, whatever may be, it clearly was not
all right, because players are still speaking out about it.
And it also doesn't seem like it was specifically the dress code that was causing people issues.
It sounds like black athletes felt like they had to be a different person inside the program.
And to some of the white athletes, it sounds like that was something they felt was kind
of true, but also the fact that they didn't feel like some of these black athletes had
the support system that the white athletes did because
they were, you know, typically the white athletes are going to be, they're going to be closer
to home.
They're coming from, you know, no middle of nowhere, Iowa.
They're coming from a small town, Iowa farm towns, that kind of stuff.
They are able to go home if they need to, if they're struggling with something.
Whereas these black athletes are more often than not coming from further away places. If you look at the geographical areas of these players and where they come from.
So that makes sense.
It does sound like, you know, like I said, Kirk tried to change a few things.
Allowing, you know, earrings and whatnot in the program is, you know, one step, I guess, in the right direction.
But clearly, clearly that was not enough. The drug testing,
I think, is really interesting because Iowa does administer their own drug tests outside of the
NCAA random test. And they are saying that black athletes were drug tested more than the white
athletes. That should be something we could easily get data on. And the fact that Iowa hasn't
released that data is interesting. I would love to
see that data. I think the way Iowa could handle that is say, you know, let's say, let's say it's
not true. Let's say they have drug tested white athletes just as much as black athletes, or if
they have drug tested certain athletes more, they can give a reason to why maybe it was a positive
test or whatever may be right. But I would love to see those numbers and an explanation why, or even
if they come out and say, you know what, we did,
and we're wrong, and that wasn't appropriate.
That at least is a step in the right direction.
Again, admitting that there was some bias there
and figuring out how can they push past that.
This report did interview quite a few people,
but it wasn't just football.
It was all throughout Iowa athletics.
So I think that's also part of the reason why it wasn't maybe taken as serious within the program. Although it does sound like within the report,
it was clear that there were some issues with football, but when you listen to the washed up
walk-ons and again, if you listen to this podcast, you know, I like listening to all the Iowa Hawkeye
podcasts for the most part. I think there are some pretty bad ones. I'm not going to go into those.
I don't feel like thrashing people for no reason. There are some bad Iowa Hawkeye football podcast,
but Watched Up Walk-Ins does a pretty good job for the most part. I don't agree with everything
they're saying. I don't agree with some of their individual takes on things, especially outside of
the show. However, they had James Daniels and Jordan Lomax on the show a couple of weeks ago,
and even James admitted he mentioned that there were issues within the Iowa football program to Gary Barta,
but he did not say specifically it was Chris Doyle.
And they did feel like getting Chris Doyle out of there was a huge step.
So I highly encourage you to listen to the Wash Up Walk-On show.
They do have a different opinion.
I think it's really important to get a wide set of opinions,
especially from a group of players who were in that program we
as outsiders do not know everything that goes on in the program we do not understand
all of the ins and outs as much as I would like to think I do considering I do keep up on all of it
I like to consider myself part of the Hawkeye media obviously not to the same level in any
way shape or form as Scott or Mark or hell even the you know the 24-7 sports guys or Rob the Hawkeye media, obviously not to the same level in any way, shape or form as
Scott or Mark or hell, even the, you know, the 24 seven sports guys or Rob at Hawkeye nation.
But I do consider myself a part of the Hawkeye media or at least, um, an incoming member of it,
incoming member of it, um, by covering the Hawks and whatnot. You know, I don't know all the ins
and outs, neither do those guys. So, um, we do have to listen to them and understand that where
they're coming from as well. But again, this report is a little bit damning, the fact that it was out,
the fact that it wasn't taken apparently that serious compared to what has been happening now.
But Iowa is making changes, and that's what's the most important thing.
Iowa is making changes to build a program that is going to be successful for athletes of color
and athletes not of color, for all athletes, regardless of race, they can be successful within the program
and can continue to make Iowa successful as well.
Because I do think there's a part of the Iowa culture that is very successful.
That rigor militarization of the program is important to the success of the program
because oftentimes Iowa finds guys who want to work their butts off.
They want to get to the next level and they want to find guys who are willing
to work hard.
So we don't want to lose that.
But you want to allow players to feel like they are able to be themselves
because when you can be yourself, you can be your best self.
If you're trying to be something else, you can, you know,
there can be identity issues.
There can be issues with performance, work effort, that kind of thing.
And you can really struggle.
And that's why we see people leave if they don't feel like they are fitting into a program.
So I think that's really important.
And then last thing I just want to mention again, stop harassing Rob.
I mean, he's doing his job.
I think he's doing a great job of kind of trying to handle each thing.
It's his job to report on what is happening.
And I do not personally feel like he is biased towards Iowa football.
I don't think he wants to get Kirk and Brian out.
You can think whatever you want.
We can differ on that.
That's fine.
It's okay.
Just stay out of his Twitter DMs and whatnot and stop harassing him if you can.
That's not fair to any individual.
So that being said, that'll wrap up segment number two.
On segment number three, we're going to turn to a lighter note, and that'll wrap up segment number two on segment number three,
we're going to turn to a lighter note and that'll be the award watch list for 2020. Quite a few Iowa
players on there. Are any of them able to actually win an award and which ones have the best chance
and who are the most surprising inclusions on some of these award lists? All of that coming up on on segment number three.
We are back for our third and our final segment of the Locked on Hawkeyes podcast on this Monday morning.
And as I said, we're going to be talking about award watch lists.
Over the last couple of days, a few more award watch lists have come out.
We have Keith Duncan named to Lou Groza award watch list.
Alaric Jackson and Coy Cronk named to the Outland watch list.
Chauncey Golsan named to the Nagurski.
Isaiah, or sorry, Amir Smith-Marset named to the Paul Horning award watch list.
So, exciting stuff.
You'll love seeing Iowa football players included on these watch lists.
A couple caveats to that, though.
Obviously, fantastic that they are getting notice right now.
But ultimately, these award watch lists do not mean anything. A lot can change. to that though. Obviously, fantastic that they are getting notice right now, but ultimately these
award watch lists do not mean anything. A lot can change. When you listen to my interview with Mello
tomorrow, he mentions the exact same thing. You know, these are just, if the season were ending
today, where would these players stand? What are kind of the gauges? What are the, who's kind of
on the list to quickly, you know, to initially watch, but things change very quickly and you
need to be able to adapt and that's what's going to happen. I mean, no one expected
Keith Duncan to be in contention for the Lou Groza award last year, but here, you know, we were there
and he honestly should have won if it wasn't for SEC bias, he would have won. So, you know, a lot
of times these people come out of nowhere, but it is nice to see some of these players getting
recognized. And I want to mention a few players. I think, you know, it's really cool to see on these lists already. The fact that
Tyler Goodson is on the Doak Walker award watch list. Hell yes. It goes to show, you know, what
kind of player he is and what kind of potential he has. There are not a lot of sophomores on
that list. Actually, let me just, it looks like probably about 12, maybe 10, 10 sophomores on that 76-person list.
I'm sorry, 18 sophomores on that 76-person list.
He is one of those 18.
Also, Makai Sargent did make that list as well.
I do not feel like either of them have a chance of winning the Doak Walker Award.
However, I will say this.
I do expect Iowa to run the ball a lot more this year,
at least initially as they try to break in Spencer Petras
and they have some of these tough games.
But then again, Brian Ferenc is a pedal to the metal kind of guy
who's willing to kind of chuck the ball around.
We saw it last year.
He was getting Spencer ready in some mop-up time,
throwing the ball all over the place. So who knows? But I do think the Doak Walker is something
that Tyler Goodson could win in the future. I don't think it's this year. And I don't think
Makai Sargent is going to have an opportunity to because Tyler Goodson is going to be the lead
guy for that. Another guy I do want to mention though, and this one was huge. I was really
excited about this. Sam Laporta made the John Mackey Award watch list.
You'll love to see it.
You'll love to see a sophomore on that Mackey Award watch list.
He is one of, let me see, one, two, three.
There are four underclassmen on that Mackey Award watch list.
He is one of them.
And I think that goes to show the fact that he didn't even really play a ton
until the end of the season.
People are high on him.
If you saw him last year, this dude was making some fantastic catches.
It felt like TJ Hawkinson all over again.
He has bonded with Spencer Petras as well.
I expect him to have a big season this year.
I expect him to be a John Mackey award
winner in the future. I don't think it's going to be this year specifically. I do think he's
going to have a good year, but I don't think it's going to be this year. Another guy in the state
of Iowa that I would actually be more worried about winning that award is actually Charlie
Kohler. Brock Purdy's lost a couple guys at Iowa State. Kohler's going to be that guy he needs to turn to.
So I do think there's a couple other tight ends in that Mackey class that will likely get over Sam Laporta.
But I think the fact that he's even included speaks volumes to his potential.
And I expect him to be a finalist, if not a winner, in the next year or two.
So that covers the Doak Walker and the John Mackey.
Let's get to a couple of others.
The Nagurski award with Chauncey Golston on that list. Let's, let's be honest here. I don't think
this is, this is going to be an award that, you know, Chauncey is going to win. Unfortunately,
I'm not, not trying to be a jerk by any means. I just don't think that that is the case for him.
Not trying to be a jerk by any means.
I just don't think that that is the case for him.
He is, you know, I think it's a great honor to be included on that.
But given the amount of people that can be on that list,
the Nagurski Award doesn't just look at, you know, alignment.
It looks at, you know, the top defensive player.
And so I don't think that's going to be him by any means.
That being said, he could be there. I mean, I just, I think it's a very fat chance that he does actually win or even become
a finalist for the Nagurski award. There's so many great defenders in, you know, in the nation
this year. It's not going to happen. The Paul Horning award. That one's interesting. Not a ton
of guys on the watch list because not a ton of guys can kind of do
and impact the game in a bunch of different ways.
They look for players who do a lot of,
they're looking for versatile players,
players who can do a lot of different things.
That's where Amir Smith-Marset comes in here.
He can return kicks.
He can return punts.
He can do end arounds.
We saw that in the bowl game.
He is also a fantastic wide receiver.
His biggest
challenge here, I would say his biggest challenge here is actually going to be Wondell Robinson
at Nebraska, Rondell Moore at Purdue. And let me see, let me see if anyone else kind of stands out
as another concern from my standpoint. Yeah, I would actually say it's probably probably those two guys off the
top of my head um actually jaylen waddle will probably be the other one just because he's
he's a beast and so is derrick stingley but um i would say those are probably a couple of guys
to watch out for however amir smith-marset didn't get going this past year until late in the season
from a return game perspective.
I do expect him to be a finalist for the Paul Horning Award. He is expected to be a key contributor within the Iowa offense. And we saw what Brian Behrens did last year with some of the
end around towards the end of the season, getting Amir Smith-Marcet the ball in space and letting
him just go for it. We need to utilize his speed more, especially with Tyler Goodson in the back
field. You have a new quarterback, a good offensive line, arguably one of the better offensive
lines in the nation.
You've got to get the ball to Amir Smith-Marset and let him go.
I would like to see him also returning punts as well as kicks, but we'll see if that plays
out.
He hasn't really been the case the last couple years, but I think there's a good chance he
could also be in the mix for that.
If he has a season that kind of replicates the last three games of last year,
he will be a finalist, if not a winner.
The Lou Groza Award.
Now, this should just be Keith.
I mean, Keith Duncan already should have been the Lou Groza Award winner.
I think it's absolutely bullshit that he was not,
and excuse my language there,
bullcrap that he was not included or not a Lou Groza Award winner last year.
However,
this year he should absolutely be the guy, especially with Iowa. They like to, you know,
they haven't done as well in the red zone as of late. So he's going to get a lot of opportunities
from an NFL perspective. I would like to see him be able to get a few more
kicks over 50 yards or at least a few more attempts and do kickoffs as well.
And then finally to wrap it up, the Outland Trophy going to the best.
Actually, we have two more.
Sorry.
The Outland Trophy going to the best offensive lineman,
Coy Cronk and Aleric Jackson.
I don't foresee them winning that.
Penny Sewell from Oregon is really kind of the favorite there.
But Aleric Jackson and Coy Cronk are guys who can really surprise people this year
and I think could find themselves in that day two mix if they have good seasons
and bounce back from the injuries they suffered last year. the final award the belitnikoff award amir smith-marset
is on that list so really excited to see what he can do again if iowa opens up the passing attack
with spencer petras which is really a big unknown brian ferentz doesn't really care about if you're
young or old he wants to open up that offense typically. So I think there's an opportunity for him there.
We will see if that actually is the case.
If it is, Amir Smith-Marset should be the number one guy.
I mean, his speed is devastating.
Iowa needs to take advantage of that.
With a healthy Brandon Smith on one side, Sam Laporta coming down the middle.
You got great slot receivers.
I think there's a really cool opportunity for Amir Smith-Marset to get
into this level but that is not something we typically
see from Iowa wide receivers so I would
say the chances are pretty low at this point
the Paul Horning award is a much more likely
scenario for Amir Smith-Marset
at this time
however that is the conclusion of the watch
list as far as Iowa football players are concerned
those are my thoughts let me know what your thoughts are
that'll do it for the show today.
