I thank God I was born on the good arms of the Midwest, and not on the battlefields of
the U.S.
It's a time of panic, and it's intercepted!
It's picked off right away!
Intercepted by Marty Hooker!
Pick six!
Eight seconds into the game!
Buffen sets up deep in the pocket, goes down the field for Smith!
Oh!
He's got it!
Smith!
Touchdown.
85 yards.
High on.
Touchdown, 10.
Taking a shot in the end zone.
It is caught.
No offense.
Touchdown.
That's either one or you have it.
Go ahead and three.
Yes.
Two-point lead for the Hawkeyes podcast,
your daily podcast covering your Iowa Hawkeyes on the Locked On Sports Network.
As always, I am your host, Andrew Wade,
and I'm excited to be back for another episode of the show today.
And on today's episode, I'm really excited to be delivering you this.
I've been holding on to it for a little bit, but we have current 2020 commit to the men's Iowa basketball team.
Josh Ogundeli, 6'10", 240-pound center out of the UK, played at Worcester Academy in Massachusetts in his final prep year.
We have him on the show today as he talks a bit about his recruitment
process, kind of his rise to get on Iowa's level, and what he loves about Iowa and why he's excited
to play for the Iowa Hawkeyes next season. So we have Josh Ogundeli on the show today,
really excited about that. A guy who can shoot the ball and can post up, looks to fit in really
well to the rotation as early as next year, even if Luka Garza returns.
So excited about that.
So we'll be delivering that to you in just a few moments.
But we're going to quickly go through some housekeeping items.

Really excited about his potential at the University of Iowa.
And without further ado, I'd like to hop into the episode right now.
I am joined here by 2020 recruit for the Iowa basketball team, Josh Ogundeli.
Josh is a big man out of Worcester Academy from Great Britain,
currently over in England right now with all the concerns over coronavirus.
Josh, how are you doing today, man?
I'm good, thank you. How are you?
Not too bad. Sounds like you're a little bit tired.
Yeah, a bit.
So what were you doing as you stayed up all night, man?
I just finished high school yesterday, so I was just finishing with my assignments.
And then after that, I just played video games.
I love that.
What is your go-to video game?
I want to say either Fortnite or 2K right now.
Okay.
I can get down with that.
Do you play any Call of Duty?
Yeah, a bit, but I really – I'm not that good at it.
That's fair, man. I play a lot of Call of Duty, and, a bit, but I really, like, I'm not that good at it. That's fair, man. I play a lot of
Call of Duty, and I still suck at it, so I would, don't worry about that, and you, so you just finished
up school yesterday, so you were doing a lot of online classes, right? Oh, yeah, I had, I took five
classes, five courses, so. Okay, well, congratulations, first off, on finishing high school um are you looking forward
to going to iowa yeah i'm actually very looking forward to the journey just need to it's going to
be a big adjustment but i'm ready for it yeah i mean i want to get into the adjustment of going
to iowa i'm a an iowa native so obviously it's it's home to me but i can only imagine it's a
pretty different experience for anyone who hasn't been to Iowa before or who is not even from the United States originally.
So we'll touch into that a little bit.
Prior to that, though, obviously with coronavirus happening, when were you planning on going to the campus of Iowa?
When were you planning on getting into Iowa City prior to all the stuff going on with coronavirus?
I want to say, again, G5 okay so you were planning on being there in the next couple weeks yes I don't know if things will change I don't think things will change
yeah I know they just changed the uh the stay-at-home order from Iowa so Iowa's
open up now I just don't know how flights would look like getting there and all that stuff and
then obviously the university and whether or not they're allowing kids on campus so
yes that's exactly that's the only problem so what things clear up then I'll be there straight away
definitely man so when you chose Iowa you kind of had an interesting recruiting process it kind
of came on pretty late what was that recruiting like um it was surprising but my AU coaches my school coaches told me it was gonna happen
um I had like maybe one or two sessions that I played really really well the rest
of seasons like I think I played way better when the coaches were there I like it big time performer
yeah I want to say that
But
My offers really started to come in
The end of my junior year
Like the last weeks
I think
I got my first
Well I didn't get my
My first offer was Bryant
But
I don't know if I really counted
Because it offered 70 people one day
You're getting a little bit excited
Exactly
So
I think I was just testing the waters so i think the
offer went away but my first real offer was south florida okay south florida is a nice place man
i've been to that campus and it is absolutely gorgeous so you get that offer from south
florida what are you thinking you're like okay i made it i have you know an offer here
what were you thinking initially when you got that offer from South Florida?
I mean, it was crazy.
So I was just thinking that my teammate, Matt Cross, I was over at the airport.
He was getting so many offers, like 12 offers in one night.
And I was like, wow, this is crazy.
I was waiting for my turn to come when the coaches were going to call me.
And one thing I realized is that when you get one offer, the rest of them were just waiting.
So that's the way to contact
you see who's offering first.
I just,
I flew back
from the tournament
to school.
As soon as I got to school,
sat down
and then as soon as I sat down,
like no joke,
I was about to play Uno
with my friends
and they,
they text me,
they messaged me.
They were like,
congratulations,
your offer.
I was like,
huh?
Who's this?
Two minutes later, my coach called me into the office because the head coach wants to talk to me and yeah i made it official back there right there that's awesome man well yeah i mean it's
recruiting is definitely a fickle a fickle game i mean look at what's happening with your um iowa
you know recruiting um you know partners you have uh the murray twins who didn't, you know, they had an offer from Western Illinois and then they get an offer from
Iowa and all of a sudden they're on people's radars now. Um, and now they just get bumped
up to a three-star recruit. Just, you know, so recruiting is incredibly fickle. Obviously,
Iowa fans are really excited though, that, um, the Hawks landed you and that you're going to be
in Iowa city. So, um, Iowa jumped into the recruiting mix, you know, after that a little bit, right?
What about Iowa made you kind of gravitate towards Iowa? Because, you know, when you're looking at a lot of the recruiting boards, it seems like once you got that offer, a lot of the
expert predictions were kind of leaning towards Iowa. So from the outsider's perspective, it looked
like you were kind of always going that direction. But talk me through that. Was that how it was
internally for you? Or were you kind of torn between a couple different schools um i was told between a few
different schools i'm not gonna lie to you um i decided what school so my coach wanted me to commit
um early period so i was decided i was okay let me set a date. So I picked the 13th. I don't know why.
I just picked the 13th.
And then, so I really didn't know what school I was going to
until that evening before.
That's crazy.
I was stressed.
Like, I was, like, you know, like, I've never felt that stress before.
I didn't know what I was going to do in my future.
Like, if I made the wrong decision.
Like, I didn't know what I was going to do in my future. Like if I made the wrong decision, like,
I don't know.
I just,
those top five schools were like,
it was the hardest decision I ever made because I liked all my visits.
So I don't know.
It was hard,
but I think the main factor is so many schools,
maybe like so many schools talk about each other.
Like the way they talk about each other,
you can tell if they're scared or if they're scared of losing something like when I spoke to
Iowa they told me if you come here whether you come here or not Josh like you're a really good
player we want the best for you we're not gonna badmouth you like some of these other schools
some of these other schools would badmouth each other say oh they're not gonna treat you right
stuff like that but Iowa they were just like,
if you come here,
we're going to get the best.
We don't have to talk about other schools
to prove that we're the best choice for you.
If you come here, you'll see yourself.
That really stuck with me.
I went on a visit,
saw the daily life of the players.
I watched them practice
and I really enjoyed it.
I liked how the coach pushed them, how he's a players coach,
how the bond between the
teammates and coaches,
just all around the
fans.
Yeah.

I love it, man.
So that's crazy to me that you were literally deciding the night before.
Obviously a huge decision though, and you're absolutely right.
It's one of the biggest decisions you can absolutely make.
At this point, are you pretty excited then?
I mean, you feel, you know, obviously the day before you're not sure
you make the decision to Iowa. At this point, are you feeling 100 the day before, you're not sure you make the decision to Iowa.
At this point, are you feeling 100% confident?
Like, you're like, I made the right decision?
Yes.
Actually, when I spoke to the coach, like, I was so stressed.
But as soon as I called up, I committed, like, all the stress just lifted off me.
I was just like, there's no way I made, I couldn't really go back, make a bad decision with that top five.
I love it, man.
And you touched a little
bit on your visit to Iowa you visited I believe your official visit was October 12th 2019 is that
correct yes awesome and so you actually got to attend the Iowa Penn State game is that accurate
yes what was that like for you can you describe your experience at Kinnick obviously being from
England I'm not sure how big of a american football guy you are but what was that experience like for you at kinnick
well um so that was my first ever like proper college football game i went to one of red island
but like the games the team isn't that big yeah so when i saw the arena I saw like uh what was it 70,000 people there because when I was
flying there on my visit I was flying from Chicago and people on the plane to Iowa were like
they'll wear Penn State shirts I was like why are so many people from Penn State coming to Iowa
they were telling me there's a big game I'm telling you like the rivalry is crazy so it was just surreal i was with xavier foster
and another big man from la lubia yeah so it was it was crazy it was a really good experience
yeah i'm very familiar with xavier foster man he um he grew up in a town that my dad actually
lived in for uh several years so um i wasn to ask this, but let's actually touch on that real quick.
So he committed to Iowa State.
How excited are you to go against him?
Did you build a good bond with him in that recruiting weekend with him?
Yeah, until today I still talk to him.
If he went to Iowa, it would have been really good.
You guys would have been a dynamic duo down low, man.
Crazy.
But I'm excited to play against him.
I have, like, a lot of people badmouth him.
I'm like, how can you badmouth him?
He's like, we're both, like, not kids, but, like, we're teenagers.
Like, we're just making the best decision for us.
Dude, people are ridiculous.
Yeah.
But at the same point, like, obviously,
he's trying to make the best decision for him to get where he wants.
And I respect it.
I can't wait to play against him.
He's my friend.
No hate towards him. So, love man yeah I if you hear people on I mean people on Twitter are just can be
such garbage man uh and talking crap to people who are making some big decisions in their lives is
absolutely ridiculous but um that's another another story for another day um so on your
recruiting visit at Iowa um you went to the Iowa Penn State game Iowa did lose that but an incredible environment nonetheless um who are your hosts from the Iowa, you went to the Iowa-Penn State game. Iowa did lose that, but an incredible environment nonetheless.
Who were your hosts from the Iowa basketball team?
Who was the main guy that you were paired up with?
Luka Garza.
Oh, nice.
That's a pretty good guy to be paired up with.
Sounds like you also are still talking to Luka Garza a little bit today.
Is that correct?
Yes.
I remember the night, too.
When I went on my visit, they told me my host would be Luka Garza.
I had no idea who he was. I did you tell him that no no no when i started to like watch his game like
they told me to watch him so when i started to watch him watch him during the season two
i started to realize he's actually a force i I didn't know how I did know about him.
Yeah, he's a pretty good guy to watch.
And I think based off what I've watched from tape of your game,
your two games are pretty similar to each other.
I mean, obviously there's going to be differences in everyone's game,
but there are some similarities to that.
So there is a big decision looming for Luka Garza,
whether or not he is returning.
And it sounds like you've chatted with him a little bit. And way you're kind of coming into a really cool opportunity right either you get to learn behind Luka Garza or you get some you know you're probably going to
get some really big playing time right away if Luka Garza does return though what is something
that you're looking forward to learning from him um Work ethic. I used to have a very strong work ethic.
I need to get that back.
I want to say I've been complacent,
but ever since all this stuff has been happening to me,
sometimes I think I can let it get over my head.
So I need to get that work ethic back.
I mean, when we're in college, it's all different.
Everyone's the same.
Everyone's on the same level.
Everyone's had the same experience.
And it's not like we're crew talk anymore.
They need you to play.
And if you're not producing, then obviously you're not going to play.
So I need to improve myself and, yeah, just learn from him,
talk about the Big Ten and see how I can fit in.
Definitely, man.
I mean, I think that's pretty great that you are self-aware to realize that,
you know, you need to kind of pick it up.
So let's backtrack for a second.
You know, now that you're back at home, back with your mom in England
during this obviously crazy time, this pandemic,
where it's something that we've never seen before in our lifetimes,
what are you doing right now to stay in shape and to get ready for Iowa?
So I have a trainer here.
He's just been working me out.
But it's outside.
So I travel, like, two hours to the north of London by train.
I just work off him for an hour, hour and a half.
And, yeah, that's it.
Almost every day.
Now school's over, I'll be it almost every day now school's over i'll be going almost every day apart from
that go to the park play basketball friends or go around sometimes i love it man um and so
outside of you know luca garza who are some of the guys in the team that you've bonded with the
most so far who are you like most excited to play with who are the guys you're talking to the most
that kind of thing uh so what I'm excited to play with everyone.
I played a few video games with Pat McCaffrey,
Patrick McCaffrey, Conor.
I played Fortnite with them.
I played Fortnite with Weez Camp.
I haven't really spoken to Joe.
I haven't played with him.
Tony Perkins, he's cool.
The only people I haven't really spoken to are Jack Nudge. The only incoming freshman I haven't really spoken to are Jack Nudge.
The only
incumbent freshman I haven't really spoken to is
Chris and his brother.
Makes sense then. So you
haven't talked to the Murray twins very much, but
have you talked to Aaron at all as well?
Yeah, I've spoken to him before.
I have with Snapchatchat but we don't
really talk but obviously when we get to school it'll be different yeah and i've actually had
tony on the podcast as well um great kid sounds like you're probably closest with him so far
sounds like you've talked to him the most out of the other the other recruits so far
oh yeah i think you can say that i love it man so far as, you know, traveling from the UK to play at Worcester, it sounds like they saw you play a game against them, and then they wanted to recruit you. Was that something that was on your radar about going to the States to finish out your high school basketball career? Or was that something that you weren't even thinking of at the time?
earlier that year I was going to go
play professionally
with Spain
but my coach
in England
was like
no, don't go
and I was like
okay
so let me just
test my waters
because my actual goal
was the NBA
so I just waited
I was going to stay there
until now
actually in England
but I ended up
playing for England
the national team
against the Worcester team
and I was planning
to have my band
settle and go to
Spire Academy
in Ohio
I talked to them I was about to set and go to Spire Academy in Ohio.
I talked to them.
I was about to set the deal to come.
But I don't know.
I think I just lost
relationship with them.
And Worcester
messaged me
around December time.
He told me to add him
on Facebook,
but I didn't add him.
I was not planning to.
And then,
I don't know,
he somehow found my email
I think one of my friends
messaged me
he was like
coach wants an email
and I was like
who could this be
and yeah
he messaged me
and
ever since then
he kept calling me
every single day
telling me he wants me to come
they've got something new
they're building
like a class freshman up
so I was like
you know what
like
I want to come I haven't really got a bond
with any other coaches because draft express with people that might already link those ones helping
me so I decided to come and that's really it interesting so then and um when you got there
it sounds like you didn't really know anyone uh and I read some articles that you were a little
bit homesick um what was that adjustment like for you?
Was that the first time, you know, being away from home?
What was the struggles you kind of went through
and how did you get past that?
No, it's not my first time being away from home.
I went to boarding school when I was 11.
But I think the main problem was that I went to boarding school when I was 11.
I left at the age of 13, I want to say, and I've been home since public school.
So I just, it wasn't really what I expected at first.
Like, it's not what I expected America to be like.
Like, you see all these fantasies on TV about how America is, like,
like a Hollywood type of life.
So when I first came to Boston,
I landed,
I was driving through the city.
Now my school isn't because my city's in the hood.
I mean,
my school's in the hood.
Sorry.
Okay.
Like I was looking at it.
I was like,
what did I do?
Like,
what am I doing right now?
But when I started school after a while like it took me time
to adjust but I ended up really liking it that's awesome man and uh I think that's funny that I
don't you know I don't I don't have the experience of thinking what the fantasy of America is but
if your fantasy of America was um Hollywood per se um how big of a difference was that for you to go see Iowa because you could
probably not pick a more different place than what is probably shown on TV about America
well I must say I told people I was going to visit Iowa then I was like, why? What do you want? Like, why?
I was scared of my visit.
They were like, bro, I'm telling you, farmers, cornfields, like, it's crazy.
And I was like, oh, no.
I was like, no.
But I spoke to the coach.
I was like, coach, like, please, what's going on, man? I'm like, what am I hearing about Iowa?
Cornfields everything farmers they're
like bro i'm not gonna talk too much i'm just gonna let you come and you're gonna figure out
yourself you're just gonna see for yourself i was okay so me and my parents we flew to chicago from
chicago to iowa we expected to land in the middle of a farm like a bit of a cornfield but we i didn't
even see any cornfields so maybe two and they were
far away from campus I was like wow like people could really like I don't know their perspective
could just or the judgment could be very wrong sometimes yeah I mean I mean I think a lot of
that comes from people who you know haven't necessarily been to Iowa I mean I'm from Iowa
there are a lot of cornfields is Is it the most fun state? Maybe not.
But Iowa City is absolutely fantastic.
Love the city.
Love the campus.
You know, one of my favorite places to be at.
So I think you obviously made a great decision there.
And I'm glad you didn't listen to all the people who were, you know, hating on Iowa per se.
Definitely a different cup of tea for some other people.
So today everyone's like, why did you choose Iowa, bro? why did you choose Iowa but it was the best fit for me that's what you got to do um and you talked a little bit about the fact that you enjoyed your relationship with Fran and you enjoyed the relationship with the
coaches and the fact that you know they basically said they want to they want you to make the best
decision for you and they're not going to go about recruiting in a negative way they want to stay
positive about Iowa.
And that Fran's a player's coach.
How did he portray the player's coach mantra to you?
Or how did you pick up on that? Because that is something I hear a lot.
I mean, I've talked to a couple of different players on the podcast.
I've had Nicholas Bayer.
I've had Jordan Bohannon.
I actually had Bakar Evelyn on the show as well.
All those guys say the same thing, that they absolutely love Fran McCaffrey.
They love playing for Fran.
So how did you pick up on that?
How is that something that you kind of noticed?
I think the day after I came in, when someone tells me,
they just showed me a video, they're like, yo, Josh, look at this.
And it's Coach McCaffrey, I think,
chasing after a ref or something.
So,
like,
is he crazy or something?
Is he like,
what's going on?
I was like,
wow,
I've never seen something like this.
And I'm just,
everyone starts telling me stories about how he chases refs,
crazy.
I'm like,
whoa,
whoa,
whoa,
I need to figure this out for myself.
So I search it up
and then I see it
but I don't know I asked some players like I asked my first I asked a guy from England
the one that went to Iowa I was like Gabe Olasani yes I was like um how's coach McCaffrey
you crazy he's like hey every coach is crazy but coach McCaffrey he's a player's coach he does
what's best for the place most of us support for the players like he doesn't like he doesn't really oh the refs
are not really on his side so that he just tries to play for his players not for the refs he doesn't
try to impact the game just because of the refs yeah i mean uh it's fun to watch him it honestly
feels like almost like a father figure like a he's kind of like a little dad protecting his children,
like making sure that they're okay,
making sure that they're getting the treatment they deserve
and absolutely love the energy he brings on the court.
It sounds like you enjoy that as well.
So I want to touch on a few non-basketball questions.
You played rugby growing up, it sounds like.
Was that your first sport love?
Is that still your first love?
I'm not going to lie to you.
I loved it.
I don't think I can play it anymore.
I don't even think I can throw a rugby ball anymore.
Why is that?
Sorry?
Why is that?
Why don't you think you can play anymore?
Because I haven't played since I was 14 or 13.
Yeah, 14, I want to say.
I played quite a few sports.
I tried to play football, soccer, as you say.
I actually played American football this year for a few games.
Really?
What position?
I don't even know what position I was.
Were you on offense or defense?
I played both.
I'm pretty sure I was – I don't know if I was a left tackle or
nah, I don't even know what I was.
All I know is
before every play
I asked them, what do I do? Who do I hit?
They tell me and I just try and do it.
That's hilarious. So, I mean, it makes sense.
You're a big dude. Left tackle would
probably make sense for you. Probably dominated
some defensive ends. So, that's
funny, man. So then, what are the sports that you watch on TV right now? probably makes sense for you probably to dominate some defensive ends so that's uh that's funny man
so then what are the sports that you watch on tv right now do you watch soccer but i mean well
not right now because there's not a lot of sports on except for actually in a couple minutes we got
some german soccer starting but um what sports do you typically watch when they are on uh sometimes
i watch soccer football uh i watch american football sometimes. If it's on, I'll watch it
if it's a good team.
Basketball, obviously.
I'm sorry, I could not watch hockey.
Hey man, you don't got to apologize to me.
I don't watch hockey either.
I just can't, man. I can't get into it.
It might be the most boring sport
I've ever watched.
In person, what time? It was kind of cool.
They hate each other. It's crazy. What time? It was kind of cool. Like, they hate each other.
It's crazy.
But on TV, I can't watch it.
Baseball, I can't watch.
So it's really just those three, four-way sports.
That's fair, man.
I will say hockey in person is way better, and playoff hockey is awesome.
So make sure to check that out if you ever get a chance to.
As far as basketball goes, what is your favorite NBA team?
It's crazy. i don't have a
favorite to see me i just like because i was in boston i just enjoyed seeing boston news
like the home team i just enjoy seeing the news i see how everyone everyone
that's awesome man um okay so then who would be your favorite player who's a guy that you kind of
try to emulate um in the nba right now joel b i like it
so what um what specifically about joel mb that kind of draws you to him he just doubled it in
the paint my only problem is uh i need to get more athletic but i think that'll cover me
reason away apart from that i think i could have a skill set similar to his all right that's a pretty
darn good skill set and uh let's wrap up with a couple questions on that what is you know what
is the probably the big what is the best part of your game if you had to say um number one here's
the best part of my game what is it i don't know i want to say i'm just doubling the pain
like that could have a big money i think I'm just dumbed at the pit. I could have a big body.
I think I'm very dumbed at the pit.
All right.
And then you talked about the biggest thing that you want to learn from
Luka Garza being work ethic and work effort, that kind of thing.
But as far as just purely on the court, your game going,
what is the thing that you feel like needs the most work going into Iowa?
needs the most work going into Iowa?
I just think everything will come along with me losing weight.
I need to get my balance up.
I think that's my main issue.
All right.
Yeah, and I think Luka Garza is a great guy to learn behind that. Obviously, he's kind of redefined his body as well over his time at Iowa
and a relentless worker.
So you couldn't have a better role model.
And Luka Garza,
a guy to learn under hopefully for the Iowa Hawkeyes final question for the
day, Josh,
I know I've taken up a lot of your time and you probably need to get to bed,
man.
