aboard with us here today. We got five freshmen that are going to help Iowa football this year
win a Big Ten West title. We will get into that. Iowa basketball has completed their foreign trips
for both the women's and the men's teams. We will get into that here today. And speaking of that
women's basketball team, a season sellout. That's right. Over 15,000 strong will be in Carver Hawkeye
Arena for every game this season. Absolutely incredible. We'll talk about that as we wrap up
the foreign trips. But we start with football.
And yesterday, obviously, a lot of conversation about what happened at Kids Day,
a full recap of everything that happened at Kinnick Stadium over the weekend.
You can go back and check that out in your podcast link.
Go back and find that one on YouTube.
A real deep dive into things.
We're going to take it a step further here.
And though we saw a lot of great storylines, obviously, the play play of Brian Allen that was one that was talked about on the defensive line what we saw
from Seth Anderson at the wide receiver position on and on and on all those storylines I want to
get into the guys that are going to be depth pieces now I was in a spot this year where they're
not going to be relying on freshmen what they did in the transfer portal certainly supplementing
their roster this season.
One of the more underrated jobs, I believe, in college football this year,
what Kirk Ferentz and his staff did in order to create what they have
with this Iowa football team and filling those holes
and not having to rely on freshmen to come in.
Now, freshmen in the past, Kirk Ferentz was not real keen on playing the young guys,
and that has changed and evolved and has also had to change and evolve with the change in the rules
where now true freshmen or anybody can play four games, up to four games in a season,
and yet still maintain their freshman, their redshirt year.
So we've seen that happen a whole lot more, and we'll see that continue.
A guy like we saw a year ago in Jazzy on Patterson.
He was a guy that was out there
a couple of times. We got to see him in the bowl game. Still played just four games though in the
regular season along with the bowl game and over those 13 games that allowed him to now be listed
as a redshirt freshman on this year's team. I think we got a handful here that can help out
in a myriad of different ways that can help out in some different roles. And I want to start
at the wide receiver position. And this is And I want to start at the wide receiver position.
And this is as good as I was better than the wide receiver position
in a couple of years.
We've talked about Seth Anderson and really looked the part on Saturday
of what he's going to do, making his way in from Charleston Southern.
A guy that just seems to understand the position.
He can understand that with the bud lines, his dad, Flipper Anderson,
the great Ram wide receiver back in the day.
You see it.
He just knows how to play the day. You see it. He just
knows how to play the position. He's going to be a real good one for this Hawkeye team. We talk about
obviously Caleb Brown and still learning the position as a running back at the high school
level, transitioning the Ohio State transfer and what he's going to be. But wide receiver is still
a position that doesn't have great depth. You know, after we get through the top four guys,
the two that I mentioned there, of course, you throw Nico Ragaini in there,
along with Deontay Vines. After those top four, there's still an opportunity. There's still,
I believe, a chance for one of the freshmen to help out. Now, three freshman wide receivers are on this team, and the one that I believe has the best chance of helping out this year.
And maybe it's just for those four games.
Maybe it's a little bit more.
We'll see about that.
But the X receiver position is the position that Iowa really still doesn't have when you're talking about those top four guys.
Those four guys are all a little bit smaller in stature.
Now, Deontay Vines might be the guy that could be the guy ultimately that becomes the X,
but I think there's a chance there, a chance to at minimum help out.
And the guy that I go to is Jarrett Bowie.
So the X position is that bigger wide receiver.
That is your Brandon Smith.
That is your Mo Brown.
That is your guy, your physical guy, your Marvin McNutt,
the guy that can go up in traffic and make plays.
He's playing on the outside a whole lot more.
That's what you're looking for.
And the four guys that four, a four, excuse
me, guys that we talked about really, that is not the skillset that those guys have. So the
opportunity is there, the possibility of getting up there and buoy. Now he was listed at six, three
coming out of high school on the Iowa football roster though. He's listed at six, one. Maybe
that changed things a little bit. If it's not Jarrett buoy, another big receiver that they brought in is Dayton Moore. Now he wears number 20. And this is something I
like to throw out there. Also these freshmen's numbers, just because if you're like me and you
see these guys for the first couple of times out there and you're wondering, who the hell is this
guy? Well, it will help you out a little bit with the numbers. So Jarrett Bowie, he's wearing number
84. You see 84 out there on the field. All right. That's a place that you look. And number 20 is Dayton and he is a big
dude. Dayton Howard is six foot five, a really interesting case. And watching both those guys
on Saturday, sometimes, and especially with guys that maybe are a little bit more of a project,
you see almost fighting with the football as it's coming to them. Both pretty smooth out there. I was really impressed. And Howard is a guy that I'm
intrigued by just because he's a Kansas City kid that the locals weren't interested in. Missouri,
Kansas, Kansas State didn't have offers from those schools, but Iowa saw something in him
and he's got certainly the size of six foot five that he could be a playmaker. But my guy though
is Jarrett Bowie. I'm going to go with him as a guy that can help out this season.
Speaking of skilled positions on offense, the top three running backs,
you know you're set, obviously, with Caleb Johnson.
He is set for a monster year.
This offensive line can do anything this season to make improvements
from what we've seen the last couple of years.
We're definitely going to see some good things out of that running back group
and, of course, what Caleb's going to be able to do.
LaShawn Williams, very good dependable backup.
He can be your third down back, catch the ball in the backfield, do some things there,
pick up blitzers, get guys that are coming free.
That's very important also.
And I think he's going to play that role.
And then the aforementioned Jazzy on Patterson.
I just continue to be excited about what he can still be adding some more weight to his frame he's a
sturdy guy and he runs violent I mean he's got some power that comes along with it but after
those three well it's probably going to be a freshman talked about this a little bit every
day or so remember when we talked about the running back position yesterday in the kids day
recap Kamari Bolton and Terrell Washington Jr. Two guys, one from Florida, the other from Texas. I'm going with
Washington Jr. for a couple of reasons. First, it's already been said that he might be the best
pass catcher of this group, a guy that you can play in slot. The jet motion, something that Scott
Dockerman of the Athletic has wrote about in the past, where when you look at when Iowa uses that
jet motion, how much better it helps the run game, how much better it is,
not just on the jet sweeps, but just the sheer motion of it,
getting guys moving, getting eyes moving,
and opening up some running lanes when they do that.
Well, Washington kind of has that kind of skill set that you can use,
and they use different guys in a variety of roles.
Usually it's kind of that slot receiver, but you can use a running back in there,
and Washington, I believe, has the skill set. He's a guy I think that's going to be out there
at least a little bit. Again, they're three deep at running back. You're feeling good. Your starter
is an absolute stud and you're good with your backup and your third guy. But at number four,
we'll put Washington in there. He wears number eight this year. If you're looking,
if he trots out on the field, number eight is Washington and number 28 is Kamari Moulton.
Let's go over to the defense and a couple of guys that can help out over there.
How about John Nestor?
Now he was an under the radar kind of recruit.
Didn't have a whole lot of pomp and circumstance to his recruiting, but he has just come in
from day one.
He was a guy that I continued to hear during the off season.
They thought it had a chance to come in here. Looking for depth in the defensive backfield.
That's something that we continue to talk about.
Finding those new guys.
No T.J. Hall.
His ascension to Sean Lee.
We're excited about those at the cornerback spot.
Back at safety.
And the continued rumblings that there might need a little bit of help.
At least early in the season.
At the safety position.
John Nestor feels like he's a guy that could help out.
The other guy. Number 14. Khalil Tate. Also in the mix right now. At safety position. Jon Nestor feels like he's a guy that could help out.
The other guy, number 14, Khalil Tate,
also in the mix right now at that position.
I believe we'll see one of those two guys, though,
burn their red shirt this year.
Helping out on special teams, that's always a place where you see those safeties, the guys that can run down
on kickoff teams, do something like that.
I believe one of those two guys will play,
not just the four games this season,
they will play even more than that.
And I'm going to put my money on Jon Nestor.
How about special teams?
Speaking of that, and Ben Keeter.
I still maintain that Ben Keeter, his days as a linebacker might be numbered.
I wonder how big he's going to get playing both football and wrestling
if he's going to get up in that 260, 270-pound range
as a heavyweight at the collegiate
level if he's ultimately going to be become somebody with his hand on his ground i've been
saying that for almost a year now i think that ultimately is the end game for him but in the
here and now running down that guy yeah i think you'd take that in special teams and i think ben
keeter is going to be a guy that's going to be out there i thought we saw a little bit more depth
though also at the linebacker spot, something
that is good.
We know about the, of course, two starters that are going to be there with Nick Jackson
and Jay Higgins.
But who else is going to help out?
Who's going to be playing the Leo, the Carson Shire injury?
A little bit concerning there, but there's some other depth there.
And I thought the depth looked a little bit better than I was anticipating at linebacker.
Not sure how many snaps we're going to see from Keeter defensively, but a special teams
guy at the very least.
And then number five on my list, it's a walk-on.
Rusty Van Wittsga.
He's going to go out there and he's going to play some fullback.
So the starting fullback right now is Hayden Large.
And it looks weird because, well, he has a number in the 80s.
Michael Berger, I think, was the last fullback, right?
That we had wearing a number in the 80s. So that looks a I think, was the last fullback, right? That we had wearing a number in the 80s.
So that looks a little bit odd.
He's just a monster.
He's 6'5".
Don't see many 6'5 fullbacks that are out there.
Ben Wetzica comes from a football family.
He knows the grind it's going to take to be a fullback here.
But he is a guy I think you're going to see out there trying to help out,
helping out in the run game and being basically that glorified guard that plays the fullback position at Iowa.
That is the final of the freshmen.
I believe that are going to help Iowa win a Big Ten West Division championship.
We got basketball coming up.
The foreign trips are over.
We will get into both the men and the women and what we saw from them,
what we heard, most most importantly about them.
Some news and notes on both sides.
We'll kick it off with the men's side as they conclude a 3-0 foreign trip with a hard-earned
victory in their final game against Barcelona.
That's as we continue here on Locked on Hawkeyes.

here on the LockedOnHawkeyes podcast. As always, thanks for making LockedOnHawkeyes
your first listen every day. Let's get into a little hoops
here and talk about what we saw on the foreign trips as Iowa basketball
goes 3-0 on both the men's and the women's side. We're going to start here
on the men's side of things
after they wrap up their foreign trip.
They were down at the half, down in the first quarter,
down at halftime in their final game.
They come back, though, and cruise to the victory.
Now, what we saw out of this,
not knowing exactly what the competition is like.
Now, last time they were on a foreign trip,
we got some videos of this.
Unfortunately, that was not the case,
but got to hear from Fran McCaffrey after each of
the games. That was certainly good to hear from him and some of his thoughts on the game. Fran,
I love listening to him. I really do. And at times, yeah, he's a little bit hyperbolic and
a little bit, goes a little bit too far with his appraisal of his team. You definitely see that,
but he knows the game so well. He could explain it so well.
And that's why I love listening to Frey McCaffrey
when he's talking about hoops.
And early on, it was about the turnovers.
Well, they figured that out.
Over the final two games, just a combined 21 turnovers
after having that many in the first game
of their foreign trip.
72 assists against 42 turnovers overall
after those 21 turnovers in the first game.
So this is the turnover ratio in really good shape.
No surprise this team could score 116 points per game.
Again, without knowing exactly the competition, this team could score.
It's a Fran McCaffrey team.
He can score.
I mean, he can go down to the field house right now, find dudes playing pickup,
and he's going to teach them how to play and score the basketball.
That's just who he is as a coach.
He puts guys in great position.
He runs great sets.
He does it all.
He really is an incredible offensive coach.
And you look at the talent that has come through this program
and what he's been able to do.
You know, these are not guys that are ready-made players.
Yet year after year, they are consistently one of the best teams
offensively in all of college basketball.
Now, they also gave up 79.
And that's the other thing you get with
France teams. For the most part, outside of the last
two years of Gassell and Woodbury and Sapp
and that crew, they're terrible defensively, and
that is not going to change this year, and that remains my biggest
concern with this team, is how they're going to get stops.
But we're not worried about the defense right now. Still
something we need to mention. We're just talking about what we saw from this squad. 48% shooting, 39% from three.
I think this team will be a better three-point shooting team than we saw a year ago. Really
inconsistent last season. That consistency, I think, is going to jump forward. Probably the
start of the show, Ben Krickey was excellent. Not surprised with that.
He was the MVC all first team player over there.
Guy that was an absolute stud.
He's going to come in and he's going to score.
And he's going to be a guy that's going to be really, really effective.
Same thing with Peyton Sanford.
We're going to get Peyton here in a moment. But I think the buzz guy of this trip ultimately became what we saw from the freshman, Owen
Freeman.
Freeman, and for whatever reason,
this was a guy that was a top 100 player nationally.
I think I saw him as high as in the 70s early on
before he made his commitment to Iowa before his junior year.
This was a guy, though, that had big-time offers.
Purdue and Indiana and Michigan State and Wisconsin and Marquette.
I mean, who's who of college basketball was after him in the upper Midwest? And he chose to be a Hawkeye. And for whatever reason, he just
kind of fell down the recruiting rankings. He didn't play on one of the big circuits. He wasn't
on the Adidas or the Nike circuit. And I'm sure that was a part of it too, because the national
people that follow recruiting and watch these guys, where are they going to go? They're going
to go to the big tournaments and he just wasn't there. But you see this guy, hard worker on the glass.
This team's going to need help on the glass.
They absolutely are.
And there's definitely going to be a role this season for Owen Freeman.
Anticipate him.
Going to be a guy probably in that 15 to 18-minute a game range.
He's going to be the hard worker.
He's going to be the power forward that, at least I grew up getting used to, right?
Just that hard worker and that tough kid that's going to be out there messing it up inside.
The Jeff Settles, the Greg Bruners, that kind of guy.
That's what you're going to get out of Owen Freeman.
He's going to be really, really fun to watch.
Mention Peyton Sanford.
All right, he averaged 19 points.
Great, right?
Also averaged double-digit rebounds.
Competition level, yes, I understand.
Put the caveat in there. But 11 rebounds competition level. Yes, I understand. Put the caveat in there, but
11 rebounds. And Fran said something after the final game, he mentioned about him playing the
four and it got the wheels turning a little bit. What would the structure of this team look like
with Peyton Sanford at the four? He's got a rebound. If he's going to play that position,
he's going to have to guard some posts. He's to be you know having to help out inside a whole lot more than what you think
about the dude's six foot nine though and getting stronger can he play that for i don't know
half of his minutes that he ends up being the four and is the starter at the four means you
have kriki at the center sanford at the four four, likely Patrick McCaffrey at the three, and then
your backcourt would be Tony Perkins, and then a decision needs to be made. Is it Josh Dix? Josh
Dix played really well, averaged 10 points, five and a half assists, though. Also, I think that was
an eye-opener out of Dix after having a five turnover game. He didn't have a turnover in the
next two. Obviously, he's got to control the ball. I'm also intrigued with the backcourt of Dixon Perkins together.
I brought this up before.
And when Iowa was playing their best basketball over the last couple of seasons during the
Big Ten tournament two years ago when they won the Big Ten title, that was when Tony
Perkins was playing with Jordan Bohannon.
And a lot of that time when those two were on the floor together, it was not always Bohannon. That was the point. Perkins ran a lot of point. I don't think he's
a full-time point guard. I don't think he hand the keys to him for 33 minutes a game and say,
take over and you're going to be the point guard. I don't think that is his game, but I think he can
help out. And he put that together. Dix can play the point. It's basically two combo guards
playing together. That's intriguing, at least to me. We
know his ability, obviously, in Perkins to get to the rim and Josh Dix helping out in that way.
Also a good defender. And, you know, Dix continues to make his way back from that leg injury.
I think we saw him still limited a season ago going off after that devastating broken leg that
he had. I think that's something that is a little bit exciting about this team,
what they were able to do and what we saw from them.
Good stuff out of this Iowa basketball team.
In fact, the team that they beat had just beat Oklahoma State.
Oklahoma State, they were an NCAA tournament team,
looked like for a while last year before the wheels fell off late in the season.
Still, at least they played somebody with the pulse.
And though they were down at the half, they came roaring back, dominated the third quarter,
and cruised to the victory in this one.
Always good to talk Iowa basketball.
Next, we're going to talk Iowa women's basketball.
A sellout of the season.
Absolutely amazing what the fan base has done getting behind this basketball team.
We'll talk about that, Plus how their foreign trip did.
That's as we roll through on Lockdown Hawkeyes.
Trent Conant back with you one final time on the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast.
Thanks for making Lockdown Hawkeyes your first listen every day.
Well, women's basketball also completed their foreign tour.
It was dominating efforts all over the place.
Just some incredible box scores coming out.
As we mentioned with the men's side, you don't know about the competition level,
but certainly happy to see that.
Great to see Kaitlyn Clark out there and some new players getting it.
That's really the conversation here today.
We know what Iowa's going to be.
We know the backcourt is set, right?
It's going to be Kaitlyn Clark.
It's going to be Kate Martin, and it's going to be. We know the backcourt is set, right? It's going to be Kaitlin Clark. It's going to be Kate Martin.
And it's going to be Gabby Marshall.
I mean, that's your one through three.
And that is what they're going to be.
But where it gets intriguing is what they do in the other two positions
and who they decide to start in this one.
So there's a couple of directions that you could go.
And my belief is because of the three starters that are going to be back
and you anticipate those other two starters that are going to be coming in this year is you go two different directions you can either
go more traditional and you can play Hannah Stolke at the four and then you go with Addison O'Grady
at the five I think that is the one that's on the surface makes the whole probably the most sense
right that's the one that you can understand. Stolke, incredibly athletic,
showed an ability to knock down some open jumpers.
The free throw shooting, which was a problem last year,
wasn't great early on.
In fact, the first two games,
she went 0 of 6 from the free throw line,
but got better then in the final game
and made those numbers look a little bit better.
Also knocked down a couple of three-pointers.
That was great to see, extending that range out.
We, of course, saw when you had that stretch forward,
how much that helps out the offense.
Kaitlyn Clark, her ability to get to the rim,
not just what she does with the deep shots,
but also having another shooter out there
if you're playing with the traditional post.
And I think that's what you're going to have with Addison O'Grady.
I've continued to believe,
I know there were a lot of people up there upset,
that Iowa
basketball, the women's team, weren't able to deliver in the portal. And Lisa Bluter in an
interview just a couple of weeks ago with Chad Leistekow of the Des Moines Register, she mentioned
they tried. There wasn't a whole lot of reciprocal part of it. And part of that is NIL and not having
the same money that other school, LSU, would have to spend right now
on the women's basketball team. But that aside, I was always of the belief that the center position
was not as big of a need as what you had. And a lot of people wanted you to believe, yes,
you lost an absolute stud in what Monica was able to do and what she was just how efficient she was
in the paint so good but Jam Jensen develops centers she's done this for a long time and this
is something that she has done throughout her career not just at Iowa but dating back she
knows how to coach post players the footwork that you see what she does and I believe that
Addison O'Grady showed enough last year that she was going to take the lead 75% from the floor during these three games. Again, competition
level. Yes, I know, but still 75% of the floor from the floor is 75% from the floor. She'll be
your center. Stolke will be your four. However, the other probably biggest upside play that we
saw here was Sidney Fulter,
who we saw at times a little bit last year.
She was a little bit deeper down the bench, but she came in there,
could go off the bounce, can get into the paint,
but the shot wasn't there last year.
I think it was 5 of 24 that she shot from three-point range.
Well, in this offense and what they're going to ask her to do,
she has to knock down shots. She did that on the foreign tour. She has a skill set that's a little
bit different. Now you're playing small. If you go that direction, play Stalke at the five, you put
a Fulter at the four. You're playing Gabby Marshall, Kate Martin, Kaitlyn Clark. That's
your starting five. It's a different kind of look, but I think a Fulter at the very least
had to get the wheels turning a little bit.
A couple other names to throw out there. What we saw at the foreign tour, Molly Davis took a step
forward. Look, last year after transferring in from Central Michigan, you could see that the
game was a lot faster here. Coming from the MAAC, playing in the Big Ten, it was just a big step
forward. But go back to a guy like Phillip Robacher.
Remember what we saw from him his first year in his transfer from North Dakota
and then his final season.
Now, completely different players, right?
Molly Davis is 5'4", 6'11", for Phillip Robacher.
Completely different in terms of skill set and the kind of players they are.
Just, I'm talking about making that jump up, getting into the Big Ten level,
and it takes time to understand the speed of the game
and how different it is.
I think Molly Davis has a chance to help out
even more this year and add a little bit to the team.
And Taylor McCabe, McCabe can shoot the leather
off the basketball, and that's what she did over there.
Another shooter, that's not a bad thing.
We didn't get to see Kylie Feierbach
make her way back from the ACL.
We hope that she's going to be ready to go.
But some news and notes here for you from the women's foreign tour
as they make their way back here stateside.
Speaking of that, they're going to be coming home to a sold-out Carver Hawkeye Arena
all season long.
It was announced yesterday that that is going to be the case.
That's right.
Every single women's basketball game will be a sellout this year for a team and program that
has only had four sellouts ever at Carver Hawkeye Arena. Now, back in the day, they played Ohio
State back under C. Vivian Stringer, and they put 21,000 people in the building, and the fire
marshal was not real pleased about that one.
Short of that, we saw the Sellots a couple of times last season.
What a story this is.
The love of this team, of watching Kaitlin Clark. And I got to tell you already, got to figure out a way to get a couple of those tickets in the secondary market.
And I know they're going to be expensive as we're going to make our way over to a couple of games and bring my daughter over.
And looking forward to that. But definitely just an absolutely incredible story. Amazing. The game
that'll be played, the exhibition game against DePaul coming up in October out at Kinnick Stadium,
how wild that is going to be. And the buzz, it doesn't end here and it will continue to build.
It's definitely here during the fall and into winter as we get ready for Iowa
women's basketball.
